I was there for this. Nara, Japan, May 1994. UNESCO sponsored it and hoped to repeat the idea (local musicians blended with international stars) at major cultural heritage sites around the world (Great Pyramids, Taj Mahal, etc.). Only this one got off the ground. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Music_Experience Wild and weird. Dylan with the Tokyo Philharmonic, INXS with Japanese Taiko drummers and Ry with Shoukichi Kina and the Irish Chieftans. Oh, and Bon Jovi. Joyful insanity...kinda like Japan itself.
Back in the days of World War 2, fought against the Japanese like me and you...Geez, Ry's generally a fairly aware guy, but that's really simplistic thing about the Japanese-Okinawan relationship, and to say it in Japan? Never mind that the US occupied Okinawa and used it as a staging area for the Vietnam War.
This is one of the reasons I love You Tube.
I really enjoy watching noted musicians giving others their due. Ry Cooder is a genuine human being whose actions speak in place of words.
whata wonderful world!
*Great upload, thanks to the poster*
Ry is best guitar player of all time.
Gordon M. I absolutely agree👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Opinions vary but he's definitely my favorite of all time.
I have many favorites & Ry Cooder is certainly among the top. His tonal quality is sublime.
Absolutely brilliant what a legend 🎉❤
Wow what a line up! Wish I could watch whole concert.
Thanks for sharing!
TheItalguitar ,
It's not a "Ry Cooder-Concert" - don't miss to notice Joni Mitchell and, among many others, His Bobness. BTW: Line-up at 24:00.
WoW God bless. that was very cool.
Wow a trippie concert-much fun
What a treat - so good!!!
Very weird mix …. But it made me feel good ! Came for Ry Cooder - absolutely Love him ❤️
What fun, at 14.40! Great song. Infectious! And they brought their own Yoko! (and wow - she got my dog's attention!)
Ry, Kina, the Chieftains!
Jon Doe / she has my attention as well. xx
Jon Doe
Wow, hearing Ry do "Going Back to Okinawa" was a treat. You should advertise that Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan were on this too.
Favorite part at 18:52. Great tune. Don’t think anyone should waste time taking lyrics too literally though.
I took it literally :)
That third song sounded like it came from a group called yoshi and the yoko's oh no's.
Okinawan Jamisen with snakeskin ( habu) soundboard

What was this concert? Any details?

Yes.
Lineup anyone?
Ry Cooder, wan long poo, hung low, (bass ). wat Wong ,wat da fuk, that's all I know , on the accordion I think it's Bob Alcock. x
Joni Mitchell
Line-up at 24:00!
Not a Ry Cooder concert, apart from Joni Mitchell it mostly sounds like a bunch of feral cats on something high.

Thinking about that too. Irony is a funny thing.
Joni
Wow
I know Ry is good with everybody , but may I ask, how stupid he felt in this japanese Kirmess mixed wit Irish Pub effect ......
Nothing stoopid bout playing with talented musicians. Open yer mind Ry does!
