Windsor Castle is somewhat legendary in my American family. My uncle Edward, born in 1906, was a guest there for about 6 months in the mid-1920's. He regaled my cousins and me when we were children with stories of the ghosts of Windsor Castle. I have a framed Christmas card to him from the Dean.
Much as George IV has been derided, he certainly was a great art connoisseur and had real artistic vision. Windsor Castle was much dilapidated when he became King and his renovations were its saviour, making the marvelous palace that it is today - and indeed the Queen's favourite residence. Kate, the curator is just the sort of enthusiastic and knowledgeable curator this building deserves.

One of the grandest and most spectacular residences in the world. This building to me reflects the great history of the British People. Windsor is a living entity that has no comparison in the world. How blessed we are that through wars and fires Windsor still shines like a beacon.
Well said. Versailles is magnificent but lacks that beating heart - that it is actually lived in and used by the people for whom it was created. For that reason, there is a sadness about Versailles.

Thank you for posting this video. In the 1980s I was privileged to have visited Windsor Castle while on vacation and fell in love with it. It is still, to this day, my favorite place to visit wasn't it for the fact I now live far away. Also, thanks to the camera person for showing all the surroundings. Sadly a lot of the biggest and best were lost in the fire, one of the most famous quotes from the queen about the fire was that at least we saved the paintings. But only those that could be carried out in the few minutes before survived
Wonderful video on Windsor. I had the opportunity to visit there in 2017 and tour the State Apartments. I missed the figure of the King’s Champion somehow!!! My mother is a descendant of Mrs. Diana (Skipwith) Dale, immigrant to Virginia after 1650 and daughter of Sir Henry Skipwith, 1st Baronet. Diana’s great-great grandmother was Lady Alice (Dymoke) Skipwith who was a niece of Sir Robert Dymoke, King’s Champion, d. 1545. Thank you for posting this!!
I have had the privilege of visiting this beautiful castle 4 times. You can not imagine how breath taking it is. Allow plenty of time to walk around slowly and see all the bits and pieces. One very important thing to remember, if possible do NOT go on Sunday. I visited the first time on a tour on a Sunday and as that is worship day, St. George's Chapel is closed to visitors. The next three times I went, went on my own and stayed all day. As you exit, there is a wonderful pub directly in front of you call The Horse and Groom. Food is fantastic, lamb shank with mashed potatoes, fish and chips and shepherds pie. Get a cab to drive you to the end of the 3 mile walk, get out and take pictures. Back to Victoria statue, shop a few minutes down the street., then walk across the bridge to Eton. If you have all day go for a 30 cruise on the Thames. This is a lovely day at Windsor. Have a lovely visit. Debbie from NC
Magnificent! I've come to understand through my readings and this video that Windsor Castle is really at the heart of the Monarchy and not Buckingham Palace. And with a million visitors a year at some number of pounds each the tours must go to making up a great deal of the funds needed for the upkeep and staffing!
Wow, this was awesome. No wonder the now-late Queen Elizabeth II loved this place, and was so devastated in her 'Horrible Year' when it caught on fire. She was so devastated to think that such a precious royal castle & it's belongings could be destroyed under her watch. But, her legacy ("Elizabeth the Great", maybe?), it left secure & in tact, better than ever. Well done, to the Queen. Now for King Charles III to keep it in prestine condition. About Henry VIII's armour, I watched a documentary a couple of weeks ago, about how with the increase in weapon technologies, armour had to not only be toughened (& these experts actually worked out the method for themselves of hardening metal, and even how to decorate it in patterns & colours - all for the the richest of wearers). Also, armour stopped being flat against the body, but poking out, to look like a big belly gut. This helped, with hardened metal, to deflect the round bullets away from the body, away from vital organs, and this outer layer (the fat-look) helped to allow a safety space between the body & the outer layer of armour. Even before guns & bullets, bows & arrows turned into deadly crossbows, piercing any basic armour... before the hardening of the armour gave better protection. It was fascinating. I watched the doco twice, just to grasp how fascinating this knight armour had improved, before it was phased out.
KATE HEARD: You have such a strong knowledge on such varied levels. Of Windsor. What DON’T you know about this castle? Your knowledge is impressive! 🇬🇧🌸
I am not a royalist but largely because of them, we have preserved so much of our history that would otherwise have been lost so I have to appreciate the fact that they exist(ed). I’d be glad to see the back of them, but I concede their role in creating so much of that very long and interesting history which continues to attract visitors to our country.
Thanks to that conquerors and their many fights you have today a beautiful country to be proud of!!! Just imagine what corrupt politicians will do to those historical sites!!!🤔🙄😪
I want to visit Windsor Castle so badly that I can feel the tugging in my soul! I would LOVE to visit Balmoral, Sandringham and BP as well, but Windsor Castle is to me, THE #1 place! I wanted to one day just catch even a glimpse of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, sadly that will never be. If I lived in England or even Scotland it would maybe be somewhat easier to travel to these places, but being in America, not so much at all. I envy the British people and the amazing history your beautiful country holds.
I was fortunate enough to visit Windsor Castle a few years back. If you go around to the left side of the castle there is a small entrance that still allows you to walk about the whole public areas but you start off in a room that houses a lot of gifts that were given to the Royal Family. No lines and they are super friendly 😃
William, the Conqueror, was my 24th grandfather through Edward I, of England. His line goes back to Charlemagne. I can't believe someone in my family lived here once.
Any anecdotes about him that has come down through the family? In other words is there something about him that perhaps history doesn't know about or may have gotten wrong about him?
@@waynejohnson1304 So, you really don't know much about your ancestry then. Joking!! 😄✌️. Goodness gracious!! That is rather stunning! Do you have any paintings or pictures of any of them? I'm sure you must have quite a bit of written information about them. Do you know why your ancestors came to America? I cannot imagine what it must be like to have such ancestry. Thank you so much for responding. Quite interesting. 🙂
Its nice to think the core room of the order of the Goethe is ever changing. I always get vaguely sad when a great hall is static history. Its great to see the living side of living history.
Thanks for this video. I visited Windsor Castle back in May of 2006. We were unable to visit the State Rooms because the Queen was in residence on that day.
Yes this was a very interesting video just beautiful was a little disappointed more of it wasn’t original but to learn of changes made thank you for the tour
It’s a medieval castle with Georgian embellishments. The castle in its true medieval form was a very austere and oppressive building even with Charles 1st alterations in the mid 17th century. What George IV did was apply a 19th century romantic view towards a medieval castle like they would appear in the great stories and fairytales from across the ages. Real medieval castle life was as I described the building. Oppressive and austere!
Great video. One thing I kept thinking when it was mentioned "before it looked like this..." with the stairs moving, bricked up walls, etc to have artists depictions of what that would have looked it. I kept trying to imagine but the camera moved too quickly to properly freeze a frame and it was all sort of glossed over.
I love these huge old castles but the practical side of me wonders how they manage to keep them heated. I'm sure many of them are very cold and drafty in places. I can see steam or hot water radiators in some spots in this castle but some of the largest halls in this and probably most other castles have only a single fireplace.....hardly enough to get the job done I would think.
It is centrally heated and, liker the other palaces, has a vast combined heat & power generator system. Costs vast amounts to heat. If they didn't, furnishings and artworks would quickly be degraded.
I like to know how many Living quarters are there? How many people get to live in the living quarters? What does some of the living quarters look like? I want to get the feeling what it was like back in the day, also today, a comparison, and coming and goings like you see in the movies about Kings and the people that lived there. This is sterile, more just showing the objects. I guess I’m looking for living, eating, sleeping, parties, business of real life castle living.
When HM is in residence at Windsor Castle would these be the same 'royal apartments' she would occupy? OR is there another set of royal apartments that are even more private than the ones we see (which clearly are open to the public) ?

Such opulence! Breathtaking!
Thanks
Beautiful Castle 🏰
KATE HEARD: You have such a strong knowledge on such varied levels. Of Windsor. What DON’T you know about this castle? Your knowledge is impressive! 🇬🇧🌸
I am not a royalist but largely because of them, we have preserved so much of our history that would otherwise have been lost so I have to appreciate the fact that they exist(ed). I’d be glad to see the back of them, but I concede their role in creating so much of that very long and interesting history which continues to attract visitors to our country.
Having a Constitutional means we avoid having even more idiotic, narcissistic, self-seeking, hypocritical plliticians.
Thanks to that conquerors and their many fights you have today a beautiful country to be proud of!!! Just imagine what corrupt politicians will do to those historical sites!!!🤔🙄😪
Truly amazing and beautiful thank you for sharing 😊
I want to visit Windsor Castle so badly that I can feel the tugging in my soul! I would LOVE to visit Balmoral, Sandringham and BP as well, but Windsor Castle is to me, THE #1 place! I wanted to one day just catch even a glimpse of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, sadly that will never be. If I lived in England or even Scotland it would maybe be somewhat easier to travel to these places, but being in America, not so much at all. I envy the British people and the amazing history your beautiful country holds.
I hope you get to visit sooner than later.🌸🌸🌸
Magnificent & Stunning
Absolutely Stunning history.
love it as always love Histroy Hit
Goodness that was wonderful! Many thanks..
I was fortunate enough to visit Windsor Castle a few years back. If you go around to the left side of the castle there is a small entrance that still allows you to walk about the whole public areas but you start off in a room that houses a lot of gifts that were given to the Royal Family. No lines and they are super friendly 😃
Absolutely magnificent !!!!!!! WOW !! WOW ! WOW !!!! Need I say more????
George IV is such a great character. He spent enormous amounts of money and had great taste.
I wonder who's money it was that was spent?
What a knowledgeable lady. No question unanswered.
Thanks. That was incredible.
Our pleasure!
Thank you for this wonderful piece of history loved it and your channel !
I love Windsor Castle. It is so amazing and beautiful. ❤️🌹❤️
Mind blowing. Just the thought that, "This is my house."
William, the Conqueror, was my 24th grandfather through Edward I, of England. His line goes back to Charlemagne. I can't believe someone in my family lived here once.
That’s rather amazing and special
Any anecdotes about him that has come down through the family?
In other words is there something about him that perhaps history doesn't know about or may have gotten wrong about him?
@@manuellubian5709 Not that I am aware of. :)
What country do you live in? I hope you don't mind me asking.
Great video, thanks Jon Snow!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Its nice to think the core room of the order of the Goethe is ever changing. I always get vaguely sad when a great hall is static history. Its great to see the living side of living history.
Order of the Garter not Goethe
Given a chance to visit on place in the whole world. It would certainly be Windsor castle. Love this place alot, ❤❤so much history and splendor ❤🇿🇲👍
Great video and audio . Well done !!! Will strongly reccomend. Next best thing to actually visiting
Amazing, so beautiful
This is amazing. I've always dreamed of traveling to this country and learning about its rich history. Thank you for this video!
Really informative
What a spectacular piece of property....
That was awesome I always wanted to see a castle 🏰 wish they showed the hole thing 😊
She looks so enjoying giving the tour.😊
Thanks for this video. I visited Windsor Castle back in May of 2006. We were unable to visit the State Rooms because the Queen was in residence on that day.
No doubt fantastic castle
Yes this was a very interesting video just beautiful was a little disappointed more of it wasn’t original but to learn of changes made thank you for the tour
It’s a medieval castle with Georgian embellishments. The castle in its true medieval form was a very austere and oppressive building even with Charles 1st alterations in the mid 17th century. What George IV did was apply a 19th century romantic view towards a medieval castle like they would appear in the great stories and fairytales from across the ages. Real medieval castle life was as I described the building. Oppressive and austere!
谢谢!
Absolutely beautiful great honour to see thank you so much for sharing 🙏🌹❤️
What does some of the living quarters
look like? I want to get the feeling what it was like back in the day, also today, a comparison, and coming and goings like you see in the movies about Kings and the people that lived there. This is sterile, more just showing the objects. I guess I’m looking for living, eating, sleeping, parties, business of real life castle living.
Thank you for your information about Castles
Loved this. Thank you. 😊
So interesting and such beauty ….thank you for sharing the history.
Great Britain and Great Peoples.
Very interesting History 👍
When HM is in residence at Windsor Castle would these be the same 'royal apartments' she would occupy? OR is there another set of royal apartments that are even more private than the ones we see (which clearly are open to the public) ?
No her quarters are at the opposite end of the building.
I am falling in love with Dan Snow. 😘🥰🥰🤭🤭🤭
