After not having done any art in over 40 years, I have dared to believe that I can learn watercolor painting. I followed your video and am shocked by the outcome. Your engaging style and obvious desire for us to learn and grow makes all the difference. Now I am going to "binge watch" all of your videos and continue this journey! Thank you so very much!!! P.S. I also have your book - it is a must have for anyone new to watercolors. It's perfect!
Hi Paul, just finished having a go at painting the blue door with the guidance of your video and book, haven't painted since I was at school (50+ years ago) really pleased with my effort. Now going to continue painting, and look forward to retirement in a few months so I will have more time. Thanks Paul for your inspiration. Andy.
Thank you for posting your 'Blue Door" 'tutorial that I mentioned to you just a week or so ago, Paul! What can I say---I have a thing for blue doors and windows. I have your watercolor book in my Amazon cart. Thanks for providing the door template, as well! Love your work....
I'm glad I came across this, and I recognized it right away from your book which I had recently purchased! I love this painting (and your book!). I'm am stumped, however, by the color of the door in the book which appears more purple-blue. I've been experimenting for an hour and can't seem to capture that color which I absolutely love.. Any suggestions for how to obtain the door color in the book? Thanks so much. I love your humor with the shirt and saying it began all white - that's hysterical. You are a great teacher. Someday I must narrow down my palette. I am addicted to so many colors that it's out of control. Your video awhile back stressing how your teacher suggested doing that still plays through my head. I share that tip with my beginner students - and tell them I'm too far gone -ha!
Hi Patty, many thanks. Sometimes the print on the book can change the colour slightly from the one on the video. If you want a slightly more warm blue, go for a French Ultramarine.
Absolutely and immensely enjoy your videos from A to Z including your professional teaching and your humor. Thank you One question and I apologize if you have to repeat the info. What size papers do you use? Thank you Ps. You’ve inspired me to paint again. Let us know when you come to California.
Thank you so much...your video is so much more effective in being an actual tutorial all in the perfect amount of time. So many videos go on far too long without the plain explanation of tools and techniques used, colour mixing and useful tips all with a tiny bit of humour to keep us engaged. Buying your book today!
Nearly finished it in Wellington NZ. The green and the gray didn't go so smoothly but the blue door fixes everything! Happy vibrant blue door. Thanks Paul!
Thank You for posting this video and the others. I have been doing small tutorials because I am afraid to take on a bigger project. With this one I used a full size paper instead cutting it smaller and I'll am pleased at how it turned out. I know to most this is a small project, but to me it is a big step doing any work on a full sheet of paper. Thank You again for giving me the courage to give it a try
Oh I looove this painting😍😍😍 and the motive, thanks so much for showing us how to draw and paint it. Your videos are such a treat for me on my way to practice and learn💐 I also liked you first sketching of this door a lot! 😃🤩. You and Margot have great holidays - greetings from Bavaria🙋♀
Love your shirt!!! You make everything look so easy but it's so hard for me lol!! Ive bought 2 A5 pads to practice on. I just love watercolour but it find it the hardest to work with, but I will carry on and persevere!!! Thank you so much for sharing with us as you do, so very generous!!
I LOVE the blue door!! You make it look so effortless even though it is not. Your personality and sense of humor always puts a smile on my face and makes trying to learn something new more fun. But, I have a question. do you have to seal your paintings with anything especially since you use pastels on them? And do you stretch you paper before you use it? I've been seeing a lot of videos on stretching techniques to prevent the paper from buckling when you are painting and it all seems a little confusing ...
Thanks again Shirley! - I don't seal my paintings - If I really like one it goes in a glass frame so it's protected or in my plans chest between a sheet of lining paper. I do sometimes stretch my paper if it's one that is going to need a lot of washes but more often than not I use thick watercolour paper - have you seen my video on paper, it may help. see link: ua-cam.com/video/TiVpc7O-umM/v-deo.html
Hi Paul, I’ve just been enjoying your tutorials, can I ask a question about your paints. I notice you use tubes, what happens to the paint in your mixing palate once you’ve finished a painting. Do you add to it the next time you paint. I can’t working out whether pans are better or tubes. Many thanks and please keep the lessons coming. Steve from Romford.
Another brilliant tutorial Paul. Thank you so much. You are always so positive and encouraging, making me believe I can achieve results like yours. Love the shirt. Very appropriate.
My gray did not turn out as transparent as yours, I am wondering why? I used winsor newton cotman cad yellow, cobalt blue and alizarin crimson. Did you use a warmer cad yellow? All all these 3 primary colors cool? Or did you use a warmer cad yellow? Thank you.
Paul, i have some questions regarding mixing of paints. In your videos and in your book you refer to mixing paints in percentages. 40% water 60% paint or 50% blue & 50% red etc. how much paint do you start with from the tube and how do you estimate the percentages? Having a challenge with this part. Thanks,
Hi Larry - it's always difficult to explain as it's not a scientific thing, more just trial and error. What I was trying to get across is when you are mixing your tube paint and water together to make a wash always add more water than paint - thus the 60% water, 40% paint ratio. It's never exact as you will add more water to get a lighter value wash. It's just that I find beginners tend to not use enough water - and you need the water for the magic happen!!! The colour percentages is a different thing - that are just the amount of each colour you need to mix together to make another - hope this helps!
Ahhhh.....the Blue Door! I just looked at mine from your class (Yikes!) and I'm thinking that you may have just inspired me to dig out my paints and give it another go!!!! Love your videos - you're just as patient and positive as you were in class 😁
Paul I would like to see a Misty mount painted by you. Not a Western Range pf mountains in mist, but mountains like those we see in North India Blue mountains with under light mist, yet see the blue of the mountain and with very very thin white misty clouds floating in front of it. Do you get it I am sure You have seen them.
Thank you so much for the tutorials! I’m not a painter or anything, I just like to play with watercolors, so you help me a lot by showing us what to do to achieve such a beautiful portrait 💕
Hi Paul, Goshen, NY here recently retired marine here taking up watercolor painting to relax it was going awfully until I started watching your lessons. Thank you for your great instruction it helped tremendously.
I was shocked when I saw the last painting you show us in this video. 😮 (The one with the violet ivy all over) I had framed it as a photo and hung in my living room a few years back. I've seen it on an office calendar's page and cut it out. Now I wonder had you actually took the photo too or just painted it. Beautiful paintings all of them. I live in Turkey by the way.
So cool! - It's quite a well known picture and I've seen various versions of it and too be honest I'm not even sure where the original reference was from as it was painted a few years ago. Glad you like it!
love this. but here is the magic question, and pardon my ignorance here, but how does one transfer the printout to watercolor paper? I traced it on parchment paper (I know, 'cringe' but all I had at the moment} but how does one transfer ???
Yes - transfer onto the watercolour paper - easiest way is just scribble on the back of the print with a soft pencil and then press through with a ballpoint pen.

One more question regarding your work station. I have a bid standing easel. I’d assume that would not be the best for watercolor. Would you show us your station. Thank you
I attempted to paint this with your instructions...and Aaaha, I couldn't believe I could paint so well....All credit is yours, thanks a ton!! Few more valuable lessons I got..., about mixing colors and right sequence of using colors...I would have painted the red flowers last... had I not followed the instructions...!! I am eager to do the next :-) wish I could share my version with you...
Paul, your paintings techniques are literally magical. It just lift off the mood, plus pour lots of knowledge. You are superb tutor. I wish if I ever get a chance to take a class in person :) Thank u again.
Several times you mentioned less is more in your tutorials...so true, I now understand....as a perfectionist, or so I've been called, I often over do things...since watching your tutorials, I've decided to slow down a bit...maybe, ease back a little...my wife says your right Paul... once again....nice video of instruction here. Thank you... P.S. my wife threw a cauliflower at me while I was watching this LOL. . I told her, "Wrong video love"...that was earlier...
Lol!!! Great stuff Mike as always and thanks for great comment - If, at least I've inspired others to throw cauliflowers around then I feel my job is done!!!
Glad to hear you'll continue the videos! I view but not yet a painter, though I did a pencil sketch of this before I watched! Thank you for bringing your humor along with great info on how to start painting!
Loved painting this. Love France. Bittersweet memories of french holidays 😍. Sunflowers and vineyards would be lovely subjects for paintings x🍷. Good choice of wine too Paul 😍🍷👍
Hello Paul Rainy A/noon in Aus, thought I'd you tube and Just discovered your Tutorials, "LOVE" them so informative and full of helpful hints. Thanks for your knowledge. You will be my regular go to from now on. Baz
I purchased your book and am enjoying it. I love the paper you chose to use; only an artist would think of the quality of paper:) I have shared it with watercolour classmates; it seems you have a following here in lovely Ladner, BC (just south of Vancouver). Please keep creating.
Received Watercolor Plus yesterday. This is a fabulous book; I've been using the soft pastels sticks and pencils but this morning ordered a set of 48 Mungyo Oil Pastels. The whole resist thing with oil pastels intrigued me; a must try! Also ordered your book, by the way.
good afternoon, I am french granny and I wish to take some classes in your group but June is too short to organize a trip to uk. Do you have any classes in september. And just in case is affirmative, do you know an hotel near by your town. Many thanks for your answer, Best regards. DOMINIQUE
I have recently started painting and really enjoy your videos and I bought your book to help me and I did this picture last week and thoroughly enjoyed it.
so I think I've scoured your channel & not found a video on preservation of artwork.. you add touches of pastel.. do you use fixative or even varnish? must they all be preserved under glass? or is there another way? Love your work and your teaching and the Pommy humour! I'm in Australia. I have loved one's in the UK who can't get home, one is my brother who is an artist.. so maybe a video? No pressure.. lol.
You are the best on you tube by far …. So informative and relaxing … true master in art and at teaching !
Thanks so much - very kind!

Lol!!! Great stuff Mike as always and thanks for great comment - If, at least I've inspired others to throw cauliflowers around then I feel my job is done!!!
thank you, Paul. you are awesome! my paint came out so good.
I love the way you talk and paint, fabulous 😊
Thank you for sharing your tutorial. I love the Blue Door! I'll try this one soon.
Great to hear Jas!

Wow, thank you!
Thanks!
Very kind - thanks Larry!
Glad to hear you'll continue the videos! I view but not yet a painter, though I did a pencil sketch of this before I watched! Thank you for bringing your humor along with great info on how to start painting!
That is awesome! - thanks Ann
Love your videos and your humor. I have your book and tried this one from the book. I thought it turned out well.
Wonderful! - I always love to hear that people are trying them out - it makes it all worthwhile!
Excellent video with clear explanations. I have purchased your book. I am looking forward to working through the exercises...
Hope you enjoy it kayo and thanks!!
Clean white shirt😂😂I've become addicted to splattering for texture, watching your tutorials🤷🏿♀️
Glad you like them!
Loved painting this. Love France. Bittersweet memories of french holidays 😍. Sunflowers and vineyards would be lovely subjects for paintings x🍷. Good choice of wine too Paul 😍🍷👍
Yes! Thank you too!
Thank you so much for sharing the picture PDF means a lot to me.
You are so welcome - glad they help!!
Hello Paul Rainy A/noon in Aus, thought I'd you tube and Just discovered your Tutorials, "LOVE" them so informative and full of helpful hints. Thanks for your knowledge. You will be my regular go to from now on. Baz
Welcome aboard Baz and many thanks!!!!
I purchased your book and am enjoying it. I love the paper you chose to use; only an artist would think of the quality of paper:) I have shared it with watercolour classmates; it seems you have a following here in lovely Ladner, BC (just south of Vancouver). Please keep creating.
Thank you so much! ... and say 'hi' to your class mates for me!
Wonderful! - have fun!
Got to page 36 so... here I am. But my shirt is so bland 😕
Precious, PRECIOUS tutorial! Thank you again and again.
Lol!!! - great comment as usual
Alexandru !
good afternoon, I am french granny and I wish to take some classes in your group but June is too short to organize a trip to uk. Do you have any classes in september. And just in case is affirmative, do you know an hotel near by your town. Many thanks for your answer, Best regards. DOMINIQUE
Hi Dominique - if you could email me I'll send you some info: artbypaulclark@gmail.com
I have recently started painting and really enjoy your videos and I bought your book to help me and I did this picture last week and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hi Karen - that's great - glad you are enjoying my book!
so I think I've scoured your channel & not found a video on preservation of artwork.. you add touches of pastel.. do you use fixative or even varnish? must they all be preserved under glass? or is there another way?
Love your work and your teaching and the Pommy humour! I'm in Australia. I have loved one's in the UK who can't get home, one is my brother who is an artist.. so maybe a video? No pressure.. lol.
Thanks very much Catherine - No, I don't use fixative, straight in the draw or in a glass frame if I like it!
Hi Paul, Many thanks from the other side of the English Channel. I only started watercolor a few months ago but your videos help me so much !
Great to hear and happy to help 👍
