Loading a Red Fin Swimmer - Modify your Red Fin for longer casts and better tracking!

- Red Fins are one of our most popular lures here at The Saltwater Edge. They have a great action, don't cost too much, and have the potential to be modified into a much nicer lure. The biggest complaint we get about these lures is they are too light. By "loading" the Red Fin you can increase the casting distance and improve how the lures tracks in the water. Loading a Red Fin is the name for adding weight. In this video we use water, but everything from bb's (good) to mercury (bad) is used for this purpose. Try out some options and let us know what you think!
These lures are perfect for striped bass, bluefish, and any other species that targets a moving bait. Whether you are surfcasting or throwing these from a boat, the red fin is not something to leave home without.
Outstanding
Water is the Last fluid to use. You risk having them pop if left outside in tackle box once cold weather arrives.
Haven't experienced that one but interesting point!
Hi; would you recommend changing the hooks to a 4/0 in the front and a 3/0 in the rear for unloaded as well?
Yes, we do recommend changing to those sizes in a well made hook like the VMC 9626PS
Where do you get syringes? Need to have a prescription in CT.
We restock on amazon. Not a sharp needle. Here is the kit we buy: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HFTYINS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I add 7 bbs and seal it up…. No messing with syringes…
Always an option, the cool thing about lure modification is there is a lot of different ways to approach it!
The water doesn’t evaporate?
It can over time but lasts for at least a season as long as the body doesn’t get cracked
Will you guys ever get the xorus austrie.
Its not on any order right now but maybe in the spring
What’s the name of the sealant?
Hard as Hull Head Cement saltwateredge.com/products/hard-as-hull
Why do you prefer water over mineral oil or bb’s/shot?
Its a personal preference thing, most fishermen continue to go with what has worked for them in the past. BB's create a rattle which can be good or bad depending on who you ask, mineral oil flows slower so it has a slower weight transfer, again good or bad depending on who you ask.
@@SaltwaterEdge much appreciated, thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve tried the BB’s, didn’t thrill me. Anything liquid I was concerned with it seeping out. The slower weight transfer makes sense with oil being viscous, I hadn’t thought of that. I think I’ll try the water for fun, can’t hurt. Thanks again
Anytime, let us know what you think of the water when you try it
I would definitely seal the hook hangers and line tie area with crazy glue or some other sealant first because the holes leak notoriously, especially after the stress of a fish and all your work loading it will be wasted when it leaks out
@@SaltwaterEdgehave u experienced corrosion or rust?
NO NEED FOR 2 TREBLE HOOKS!! Rear treble should be removed and replaced with a bucktail flag. Add extra weight inside to compensate for no rear hook. The lure will work better and do less damage to fish!
Definitely an option! Mario prefers the trebles but singles can absolutely make catch and release easier.
I usually just use the front treble, no rear hook, they swim just fine with 7 bbs and no split ring on the nose…
