I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Husky Jerk Hj-6 and Hj-8 in black (or blue) and chrome is one of the best baits ever. I always keep 5 new ones on hand at all times! I really dig what you're saying about the cranks too though. You always seem to make me see something in a different way that I hadn't realized or thought of before. Thanks Matt.
ive caught a lopt of fish on them!
The teschnological advancement has surpassed that of the Husky.
Matt, I've never heard about people doing this before. I think its genius! Thank you for sharing it!
Glad you liked it!
Been doing it for many years, It's a different look. Thanks Matt. Had a 110 bit in half today. Dam snapping turtle
bit in half!!!!
@@MattStefanFishing Bite the tail off between the back hooks. I could not believe it. I'm guessing it was a snapper.
I have an old vhf David Fritts video where he's adding weight to the old Poe's 400. Man is that an OSHA nightmare. Concept is right on point. Don't forget you need to adjust weight based on the water temp. Say every 10 degrees for example. Lead epoxied on plastic lures, keeping the original pitch of the lips attack by the weights position. If you're suspending, not hitting cover, larger hooks can help too. Or the old wrap the hook shanks with lead trick. Can dull the action. Good video, brings the old trick back to the fore front.
yeah adding lead can be tough
Hey Matt, jus watched there videos and I really enjoy your content , most of it . Elgey bone is my go to has been for some time. can't hide what works . Thank - keep them coming
Thanks! Will do!
Great tips! Smithwick rogue Deep crushed them back in the day... loved those things, all my favorite colors aren't made anymore though.
awesome!
It's a great point that, I was thinking not too long ago why bait companies do not make or develop suspending cranks in order they can stay deep in the strike zone as long as possible and don't rise tail up
not sure why it hasnt caught on yet
The Husky jerk is a winner, I lucked out and caught a store that had them on clearance, and got a bunch for $1 a piece 🎣
Dang! thats a steal!
Good job Matt. I've been using the small round lead stick on weights for years on my crankbaits and jerkbaits. For adjusting them up or down . What ever you need at the time. Cool big foot backdrop. !
haha! thanksd!
They do come off or slide. In many cases, you'd need heavier weights only achieved via making another eye such as have seen on Japanese swimmybaits.
Never tried them on swimbaits . Only on crankbaits and jerkbaits
@@wolverinex4243 they don't come off
@@randyoakes7238 yes, i know what you mean...they do slide, technically, that's coming off the spot...and they are too easy to remove. I need a permanent solution is what I am saying and with the adding on an hook eye, you can add any weight sizes to get them down to any preferred depth. JS.
been weighting cranks for 40 years. I crank it down on a medium retrieve then work the rod as I would a worm in summer. Feathering it through the cover. Always around cover especially weeds 3-6'.
Actually preferred the old cedar Poe's for this.
Wrapping lead around the front hook so the crank would float tail high and back out of the cover.
Crazy how many fish hit it on a dead pause just like a jerkbait
awesome!
Some juicy info Matt! Awesome! I been trying to figure out how to get my DT-6's to suspend the right way that I want it to
just got to tinker with them
Great reminder video. I’ve had my forward facing for only a couple of months now and have just learned how to watch my crankbaits (mostly 6xd) swim back to me and interact with the fish. But this video reminded be that I do have some suspending Norman dd22s that I haven’t used in some time. Now I can’t wait to try them out with the forward sonar. Heck, I even have some old Poes super cedars that I modified after watching an ancient David Fritz vhs video tape on how to drill a hole between the lip and the front hook hanger and filling it with molten lead. Have you seen that video tape? Ask David if you haven’t seen it. I even did the trick to some Bagley’s too. These modified wooden baits suspend pretty good but they are sensitive to water temperature on how well they suspend, sink or float.
definitely ! give it a shot!
I gotta try the lead wraps! Genius!
go for it!
Slow risers are the trick, water temp fine tweek with suspend strips. Primary weighting on a floater: Wrap round 0.25 lead on the hook shank ain't bad, it's better on the bottom hook if it needs that kind of weight placement. HJ Mention: Suspending Husky Jerk: Old Crystal Shad pattern: then steel wool and apply thinned worm dye on the back, in brown, blue, purple, grn chart. any color. Go light, and thin with a 1/4" wide stripe over the top of the back with the dye, it seeps in and down over time.
thanks for sharing!
I also use heavier gauge split rings, like the ones you find on salmon spoons (at least those are the lures I have that I raid). IMO heavier split rings do not negatively impact the swimming action or balance of a crankbait, or jerkbait, but sure add several grams to help achieve suspension down deep.
good idea!
The art of split rings does require upsizing or downsizing depending on the action or just wanting to land ratio.
Awesome video Matt! Never thought to do that. Definitely gonna grab a few!
Glad I could help!
That is a great tip! I have several cranks I'd like to try that with!
You should!
Have you ever used suspend dots? Sticky "hole punch" sized pieces of lead you can attach to the bottom of baits.
yep but they tend to fall of
Back in the day before suspending jerk baits, we would weigh the to suspend, slowly rise, sink very slow all with huge success, but to this day I have not tried messing with crankbaits in that manner, but as always, Im going to give it a shot!!!
go for it!
For cold water I liked Bill Dance Signature Bomber Suspending Fat Free Fry, little 2" suspending crankbaits. In early spring those little buggers caught largies & smallmouth in Chicago's Lake Michigan harbors, but also springtime steelhead, brown trout, and coho salmon. It's still my favorite crankbait for the prespawn and crystal clear water, and OF COURSE the suspending models are DISCONTINUED!😡😡😡
hard ones to find now!
Fat Free Shady is the way to go. I kinda concur.
Great video! Find some Norman dd22 suspenders…never really liked them or possibly carolina rig the cb !
good suggestions!
Matt check out Nishine Lure Works weights that are made for hanging on Jekrbaits & Crankbaits. You can clip them down for weight adjustment on the fly. These little weights are 🔥🔥. Nishine is a Japanese lure maker that specializes in Smallmouth baits . His Erie 115 TW is a killer bait and same with his small finesse football jigs.
ill check them out!
This is very good info. Thanks Matt.
Glad it was helpful!
@@MattStefanFishing Matt, I have always loved Randy B. However, I think you as a younger angler are on the cutting edge of the information in this fishing world we are looking forward to. Tight Lines and best to you and yours.
Great information. Give thanks
Glad it was helpful!
🍺. Thanks Matt.
You bet!
They made suspending fat free Shad’s . But they are discontinued now . I seen Bill Dance fish like that 25 years ago.
yep ive got a couple...wish i had more
love the Sqatch, what does it read under big believer tho? thanks for all the great tips
haha! its a wine company advertising sign called Portlandia www.bing.com/shop/productpage?q=portlandia&filters=scenario:%2217%22%20gType:%2212%22%20gId:%2281967224847%22%20gGlobalOfferIds:%2281967224847%22%20ProductPageKeyAppender:%22serpshopans%22&productpage=true&FORM=SHRB01
Did you get snow or rain? It's not made it's way to me yet. My wife doesn't like it, but I use the aquarium to see how the bait reacts. On a new bait your not going to transfer the bad things that can come from a lake. I'm in total agreement on weighting the deep divers. Even in the summer, when I kill it I don't want a tail high rise. I like to think it all helps.
we got snow and rain...
Storm suspend dots. They work good.
yes they do!
Sorry to hear that, it means I'm a day away. Damn woolly bear!!!
haha
I love the Bigfoot cut out on the door I’m a believer
haha! it was given to me as a gift!
I bought baker crankbaits that claimed they suspended but they did not. They all floated straight back to top, no matter the water temp.
Really? Mine do not
When the Bakers first came out, (many years ago now) they had a bad run of all the depth versions and they floated and got terrible reviews which killed their sales. Now the regular squarebill (RGD1 2-4') and slightly deeper diving (RGD2 3-6') suspend well. The deepest diving one (RGD3 7-10') all floated and I returned them. I bought straight from the importer. They are great baits. I mainly use them in spring but will try them now in fall. I throw to a dock post anddo a short reel or rod pull to feel it wobble and get down. Then let it sit, and bass come out to get it. Even open water the pull and pause works best. They also make a 3" suspending Shad (BDT1 and BDT2) that are excellent lil Shad Rap style suspenders.
@@MattStefanFishing I honestly thought baker just said that as a gimmick. I'm pretty sure I even commented on tackle warehouse about it to. Man I was pissed about it. Gave them all away.
I’m a big fan of the husky jerk. I’m pretty sure they make those now with a deep diving lip. Have you tried those?? Also, I’d like to hear if you’ve ever experimented with sinking baits, like the Rapala countdown. Ever tried those?
I love the rapala countdown
@@MattStefanFishing I’d love to get a video on it!👍
Problem with same version with longer/bigger bill is the swim is altered. At the highest level, the minute detail is in the swim.
I had some suspending Fat Free Shads. Lost one and may still have one.
dig it out!
Bridgford, even Bigfoot from Jack Links want it. 😜
Had to, I couldn't help it. haha.
hahah! im thinking about sticking a bridgford logo on it!
dredgers awesome i just wish they made silent models
me too!
I have lots of dredgers . Some of them suspend , one or two even sink slowly .
really?
@@MattStefanFishing yep . Stock too . I was surprised .
Wondering your thoughts on the returning 5 fish limit for MLF BPT?? Just saw seen a few videos addressing the new rule just wondering what you think??
i dont like it.
@@MattStefanFishing last question are you making a video in response or did I miss it somewere in one of your videos??
Interesting I just use a lead sticker on the belly
you can do that as well...they tend to fall off for me
@@MattStefanFishing oh so I would kinda also add superglue
Hey man its a big foot on you door lol
i better not answer haha!
Isn't the money badger suspending?
No they have a slow rise
👍👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
Nay, nothing will taketh the place of jerks. All cranks ought to float with a roll or wobble, but who the heck am I? Perhaps if you can put it all together. I do not feed answers.
thanks for watching
Hydrodynamic- lol
haha!
I thought you were a little Sensitive about that bigfoot thing.
haha! people give me bigfoot stuff all the time. I wish I cared about the whole Bigfoot thing having seen something crazy.
First!!!🎣🥇🙌🏻
