If you don't have the special tool and/or don't feel like buying one, you can use a large snap blade utility knife. Wedge it between the pan and block and slowly work your way around the pan, a little oil on the blade sometimes helps it glide through the gasket like butter. Personally I feel this method makes for less chance of marring the surfaces.
I don't have $300 to give a repair shop this month(rusty pan has is seeping oil an it's getting worst) I'm definitely going to try to do this myself. I've done my spark plugs and engine coils after 2 of my motor mounts broke , I really feel like I can do this with no problem. Just a person who can assist with the nails
I used a tooth brush sized wire brush to get off the gasket and it worked very well. It was also quicker for those who don't wanna use a razor blade lol
I see actual gaskets being sold on ebay. Would adding a gasket along with sealant prevent leaks for a longer period of time, like you do with a valve cover?
Are the oil pan nuts all the same size? Im trying to figure out what size socket to use to remove the 11 nuts on a 2014 Prius C lower oil pan. Thank you!
How long total did it take you to do this? Firestone told me 5 1/2 hours at a cost of $776.39. Sounds like a rip off to me. I'm tempted to try it myself for that price.
Depends on the vehicle. This was a '97 Maxima. Less than an hour. Some vehicles have two oil pan gaskets; an upper and lower. The upper seal is very time consuming.
I think that he forgot to tell that you have to wait for the gasket to dry before you put any oil in there. That's what the dealer told me. (repair under warranty phew!)
Great video- This next question is probably easy for most out there, but I want to know the simplest explanation on how to use any type of torque wrench. I think I caused the leak in my transfer case because I went too tight. I had a nice torque wrench; nice enough to look like it had every measurement possible engraved on it. I should have bought a simpler one but again, I'm not sure if i would use any of them right. I know I can be stupid and lazy, but any advice on torque wrenches and how to look at and use them? Again, I think I lined things up wrong or tightened things up too far before remembering to use the wrench. My defense-- I couldn't see any markings on the bolt at all, so I didn't know that meant it still likely had some parameter of torque expected.
Just dropped the oil pan on my 07 eclipse spyder GT. Liquid gasket was used oem I guess. Unless it’s been done before. Does it matter if I use liquid or regular gasket? I got one with the new oil pan
I have a 2008 scion tc with 190,000 miles on it and it has black fluid leaking. I think it's leaking from the v8 engine not sure but where do you guys think it's leaking from? And where should I take it to get inspected.

30min-1hr
@CarsNToys
So basically, you could buy a prefabricated gasket or make your own using a sealant?
Thanks for the content by the way
Depends. Nissan recommends using the sealant. I use the prefab gasket (Felpro) on other vehicles. I tend to follow what the manufacturer recommends.
Always used Permatex
