Right? Also getting gifts doesn't automatically make kids entitled. It's only when the child is taught to expect gifts whenever they want them.

I am extremely petty. I would have told my mother "Why don't you explain to 9-year-old about the doll you bought her and then returned?" And then when she got angry I would say "Or we can discuss the $600 bag that I bought you, but returned per your advice not to spoil too much"

My daughter was born on Christmas day. I had a relative who commented about how many gifts my daughter received. I reminded the person that it was not only Christmas, but also her birthday, and I thought she deserved an actual birthday like everyone else. People need to mind their own business because they do not always know all the facts or understand the situation.

I have the same situation with my son. I was very worried about this when he was born, so after speaking to multiple families about how they handled the Christmas/Birthday for their holiday babies…I chose to celebrate his birthday on the same day in January. This way he got Christmas and his birthday independently. On his actual birthday day in December (23rd) we took him to dinner at the restaurant of his choice in order to acknowledge the day. Anyhoo…me doing his birthday differently ENRAGED my MIL who then tried to ruin it every single year until she finally passed away. She was a horrible person anyway.

My niece and my friend's baby too!
For my niece, several years we celebrated her birthday in the summer and just treated Christmas as Christmas. The other years we procrastinated and definitely did it during the holidays and it was hectic!
Her little sisters would be confused why she got so many 'extra' gifts for Christmas and we explained it was her birthday too - So that was another consideration of why we did it separately when she was younger.

@@thisbushnell2012 I used to do Christmas cards back when we were first married in early 2000s…. After we had kids, I did it for a while we had two.
Once we had 3+ kids and I realize how stupid all of it is to just send the cards in a digital age … I gave up doing it at the bees of my mother-in-law and other older people.
We would usually send them a letter about what’s going on with us or let my mother-in-law know what was going on that year so she could add it to her letter in the cards she sent.
I think my mother-in-law gave up on sending Christmas cards about five years ago .
I understand the idea behind it and the tradition, but I’d rather keep more personal traditions for the holidays than the need to spend a lot of money sending cards to people who haven’t even bothered to talk to me in the past year and who haven’t even so much texted me to see how we’ve been doing .
Definitely email or text merry Christmas to my friends and family … but that short and sweet and personal and you don’t have trash to throw out afterwards.

I had a petty parent moment. Our son destroyed our daughter's toy that she got from Santa because he was throwing a fit (he was 6). So I took his Bjzz Lightyear apart, piece by piece, and acted like I broke it into a million pieces. It was his "big" Christmas gift. He never destroyed another thing and his "fits" decreased significantly.

@@PastaInTheStudio I'm so sorry, it sounds like your brother is the family "golden child". I hope that your family hasn't tried making you the family scapegoat, but that situation is very common dynamic when there's a golden child.
Do your parents punish you for the exact same things your brother did (but your parents ignored when it was him?). Did you ever get blamed for something he obviously did? Were his school achievements held up as perfection, no matter how ordinary, while your good grades are just expected but never praised?
I hope none of that applies to you, but if any of that sounds familiar, please know it's not you. I don't understand how parents can play favorites like that. It never ends well.

My friend had parents who did that and it was emotional abuse, told her she could go to friend’s bday or concert but right before would say she hadn’t earned it and would ground her. He’s never bought me a present on my birthday or our anniversary. It feels like he just doesn’t care and when I talk to him about it he says I just don’t “do gifts.” I can’t understand that. How do you deal with your husband in your situation? Because I find myself resenting my boyfriend a little which I don’t want to do (he’s 3 years older than me and he’s been working since he was 16 so it’s not like he can’t financially afford it, even small things like flowers would mean a lot)

He would rather spend all day playing games than take a half an hour on picking out one of the gifts in the many lists I provided him of things I would want. In my honest opinion, you need to stand up and say exactly how you feel. Tell him that if he doesn’t want you to give him gifts thats fine, you will respect that. But it is important to you and its not because of the monitory aspect. By him giving you gifts on those occasion’s it him saying you are special to him and he wants to show appreciation for who you are, and who you are to him. If he needs a list of things your happy to provide it. Etc. Once you get his response you need to decide stay or go. Because trust me, you don’t want to be in my position, 16 yrs in with no respect/appreciation for who you are and what you need. Your not asking for a 5k ring or a 10k vacation etc. Your asking for kindness, love and appreciation and respect from your partner. You deserve that! So it may be time to step away. Too funny about the mom sending out holiday cards. I think that is a generational thing. My parents (Depression babies) did the same thing--except that family HAD to get a card. Friends, business/acquaintances fell into the category of 'did we get a card' model.
When I was a kid, my siblings and I LIVED for the Sears Christmas catalog. We would pore over every page and circle the things we wanted for Christmas. Not socks and sweater--but the cool toy things. After a few weeks, with all of us marking up the catalog, it was unreadable. As old folks now, we still remember fondly how much fun that was and how surprised we would be when Santa would bring one of those gifts for us. He knew . . .

'You don't get everything you want in life' is indeed a good lesson. But 'promises can be broken without any reason' apparently is as well? The wife felt her daughter shouldn't receive what she was promised in order to "teach her an (unnecessary) lesson". Yet, when OP used MIL's words and actions against her (the supposed adult), the wife gets enraged because "it's not fair"?! WTF?

The woman discussing her “irish grudge holding mother” and their holiday xmas card list made me laugh bc it brought back so many memories from when i was younger. Every christmas, my extended family on my fathers side not only held “grudges” when it came to sending out xmas/holiday cards (and yes, there was always a “list” of those who had or had not sent xmas cards the year prior to determine who made the cut), but the pettiness was REAL…..they would make sure that they NEVER gave a gift to us that was more expensive than what they had received from my family (literally not a dollar more lol)…..so one year my father decided to “experiment” with their level of petty and gifted my two cousins each with a xmas card with a check inside for $53.72 each (the xmas cards and checks were mailed to them just before christmas as we were going to be out of state for xmas that year and would not be able to celebrate with them together in person). When we returned home from our holiday break, my siblings and I came home to find xmas cards in the mail from said relatives….each card with a check inside for….you guessed it….$53.72 lol🤣😂🤣
We showed our parents the christmas cards and checks/gifts and my parents couldnt help but laugh! 😆🎄🧾🤣

15:04 my family ask me for a list every year. These past couple of years I make a list with categories. 10 things in each category. So if everyone buys from the cheap side everyone will be able to and the other way around. So I have a $5-$15 a $15-$25 $25-$50 so on so forth until its $250-$$$ and I send out the document saying cross it red so no one else buys it. And boom it works. No repeat gifts. No, "oh all your gifts are so expensive" and no needing to find the same thing I'm talking about because there is a direct link.
