  • A subscriber sent over this nifty little gadget to me here in Hawaii called a DynaTrap 3 Insect trap. It is designed to attract mosquitos, and other flying insects using a Purple/UV LED light and then traps them using a fan that creates a positive air pressure in the cage. Does it work? That is the question.

The on/off switch is at the top underneath side with bulb you push. I have had mine over a year and it works great.

Just a word of advice it is meant to remain on day and night only unplugging it late fall into spring! It is also recommended that u do not place it where u sit or lounge in ur yard because the mosquitoes may become side tracked and stop to bite u. I own several of these and keep ours on the far end of our backyard and the corner section of our front porch, away from where we dine. I’m one of a few neighbors who enjoy their yard all spring, summer and fall!! I just gifted one to my deceased girlfriend’s aunt in New York. This is a purchase you won’t regret!

I got rid of the bug zapper because it attracted pollinators and any insects. Moths are pollinators too.

We use mosquito coils and incense , they don’t like the smoke , also personal insect repellent , don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes at all in Australia we have Ross River virus everywhere and Dengue Fever in the north .

Dynatrap has worked for me. I have a small stream in my back yard that attracts so many mosquitos. We leave this running as soon as the snow melts all spring summer fall for three years. It has decimated the mosquito population. The key is to have it out asap in the spring to catch the females before they breed. Also, keep it about 12 feet from where you hang out in the back yard so it gets the mosquitos away from you. I still use coils and tikis for parties but this product has really helped. It won’t help if you put it out for a party because it’s basically like having another human there attracting the mosquitos. You need to use repellants for that. This brings down your mosquito population in general.

They work better at night.Place it away from the people. Our local pharmacy has a newbie that gives off the scent mosquitos are attracted to.

I wonder whether they'd catch termites, those and small moths are all I have in the house.

I saw small moths and what I think were winged termites in the mess that came out. So I would yes, I think so. lol

Considering the research I've done over the years it doesn't seem worth it. Hawaii has 8 varieties of mosquitos (6 that bite humans and 2 that feed on plants) and considering their different reproduction strategies/requirements and the rate at which they reproduce this isn't worth it. Some might say it runs better at night for obvious reasons but only 2 of the mosquito varieties that live here are active at night, so your essentially putting a small dent exclusively to 2/6 of the overall population that bites humans and might even be trapping some of the plant eating varieties which aren't pests at all.
Here's some knowledge. If there's a big mosquito bloom or population near you 3 things are present - nectar from flowers, standing water, and blood. Mosquitos need all 3 in order to make larvae. For example I rented a house with lilikoi vines completely covering a pole and tent style parking garage. The vines made green waste over time and weighed down the tarp to start collecting water, mosquitos found the water so lizards starting moving in to eat them. When the vines flowered the mosquitoes had everything they needed to boom, water from the tarp + blood from the lizards + nectar from the lilikoi flowers. There was hundreds of them hovering around my front door in the day time all day until I cut the entire vine back to the fence line, after that it was like I didn't even have mosquitos at all. One type of species lays their larvae dormant into dirt and they bloom after heavy rains, nothing to do about those but they have short lives and aren't around in dry times.

All that might be true, but I haven't had to deal with mosquitos on my Lanai since I turned it on a week ago. So it works for me. Mahalo for watching.

The DynaTrap could be more effective during the day if u place it near areas that mosquito's frequent or hang out near often, like shade. Then you are more likely to put in a dent to the mosquito's that bite humans during the day.
