I learned a few years ago that freezing and thawing your cabbage head before assembling is much easier than blanching. It was a game changer for me and I wanted to pass on the tip. Thanks for all your inspiration.
I have tried freezing my cabbage...went back to the boiling method after coring the cabbage and putting it in boiling water...freezing alters the taste of the cabbage...at least to me it did...
Hello From Toronto, Canada Delish Deddy! I am Croatian Canadian. In Croatian Culture Cabbage Rolls, Which We Call "Sarma" Are A Main Staple Of Every Croatian Kitchen, Just As In Most Other Slavic European Country's And Cultures! *And We Have A Much Easier Blanching Method Of Getting The Cabbage To Come Apart! Love Yo' Cookin'!
Actually, u can skip boiling altogether by freezing the head of cabbage solid for a couple days, then defrosting. The cabbage will be soft and pliable as if it's been boiled, except doesn't rip as easily. U just cut out the thicker middle of each leaf b4 roll. The finished cabbage roll isn't as tender as when it's been boiled, but u save urself a lot of work & hassle, that's for sure!
That's how we do it. Keep the outter layers to lay down in the dish on top of sauce and place the rolls on top of them. We also cut the core out and put the whole head of cabbage in. Boil, let cool then wrap with them.
Hi Deddy! This dish originally came from Poland. They are called “Golumpki” stuffed cabbage. I love watching you cook. I have one request, can you list the ingredients in the show more section. I have take a screen shot of ingredients to make sure I have everything. Thanks!!!!! XOXO
You were right the origin is Poland, and Deddy was right too Germany!! All in all I am will cancer so I had to only supervised my husband in how to cook and stuff cabbage. Then I got tired so I let him watch Deddy!! Thanks to both of you for this video!!! I wanted something good for New Years!!!!!🎉🎉
Sasha, thank you for inviting us to be family in this video! I was very excited to see this Caribbean island fusion of a classic staple central European food that Deddi expertly created. You are absolutely correct that this dish originated in the areas that are today Poland/Slovakia/Ukraine. My great-grandmother learned to make this in that region of Europe about 120 years ago and she brought this delicious food recipe with her to America for my family to learn and enjoy, along with many other wonderful foods. While I do prefer the traditional European version of this recipe, I am very happy to see that other parts of the world have adopted it and added their own classic regional flavors to it. I'm sure I would enjoy the version presented in this video and I'd be very excited to try it. Thank you again for sharing and my best to you and your family!
I am a German from Russia descendant and I love and make these, I boil my head of cabbage to remove leaves, After I roll them and place in my big turkey roaster, I put down 1/2 can of sauerkraut an then after filling the roaster I put the rest of the can of sauerkraut and over all I pour two quarts of home canned tomatoes and bake at 350 uncovered for 2-3 hours. Even better the second day.
My family is German & Russian as well! I was going to say the same about the sauerkraut. SO GOOD! I haven’t made this in a few years. May have to now! 😊
Yes sister, you are closer to the regions for cabbage rolls: Poland, Russia, German, Middle Eastern, Near Eastern, I would say too the "stan" countries like Kazaktan, etc. These are the top ones and each region does it their own way but usually a meat and rice style. Great you were right about Poland. I have taught English to international students and love to cook internationally and do lots of google search.
Some people use tomato soup & you can put your whole head of cabbage in pot of boiling water for 10 minutes & pull leaves off really easy I am going to try fixing this one like Deddy & put to the side my filling receipe Deddy looks so favorable May God continue blessing my favorite family . I love you all & appreciate all your wonderful recipes ,thank you & salute you on such a beautiful blessed day the Lord has made 🙏 ♥ 🙏 ♥
Love it when Mommy and Deddy cook together ❤! You are a beautiful family and I am amused when Sasha advises because Mommy says she can't cook! Peace, love and good health to you.
Yes, and of course, as somebody had stated, you put the whole head of cabbage in there for about 10 minutes boiling, and then take out the head of cabbage and pull it apart much easier
We love this so much! Try freezing the cabbage overnight (the whole head of cabbage) and take it out in the morning. I love your filling, looks very flavorful! I'll be trying it soon, thank you.
Cabbage rolls are Polish, although Deddy has given it quite the Italian touch with the basil and oregano!! Looking yummy with all the flavors added to the meat and rice mixture.
If I were rich I'd hire Deddy as my personal chef. I love Jamaican food. My Pastor and wife were Jamaican. God rest their souls.. I wish I could find the seasoning that he uses. Everything always look so good. Keep up the good work and God bless you all.
Looks delicious, I noticed that Deddy used spices at each stage of the recipe. My cabbage rolls are in the oven as I type this. My recipe is similar, I used ground beef. It's interesting that Jamaicans change whatever they do, making it their very own. This gives dishes their own unique taste. Big Up!!!
Deddy your warm smile coupled with your great food is enjoyable to see coming together! I love cabbage rolls but don't have the patience to deal with the cabbage, so I usually buy them. I also suggest ground lamb for a more Middle Eastern style.
DELICIOUS!! I LOVE EVERYTHING YAW COOK!! Even if I don't eat certain things I love how u cook and love the Father daughter bond and the rest of the family cameos. Keep them coming....
So my friend from Poland makes these. She puts onion, garlic, salt, pepper, ground beef and an egg, mix it then add rice. Her cabbage rolls are in a marinara sauce that she adds cinnamon to. She cuts the core out of the cabbage and boils it for 10 min. Then the leaves fall off. She also uses about a tablespoon of meat for each cabbage roll, roll them and pile them up in a Dutch oven, covers with sauce and put the lid on, then bakes for 45 minutes. I love your meat recipe and thought you might like to try something different.
Cabbage rolls was a dish 2000 years ago with various variations depending on the region. It was a dish during i8 Swedan's King George Viii era during the 18th Centuruy
Cabbage rolls can be traced back to Jewish tradition 2000yrs or more. But many countries have done their cabbage rolls for centuries. Every country in Europa/Asia does their own style. Some like it Sweet n Sour, some like it Savory. German, Polish, Russian, English, Irish ect are what most folks know about. My Grandma would make it like Deddy but fry up some bacon and sprinkle it in the mixture before rolling it in the cabbage leaf. They are a great treat for any occasion.
Making this today for the first time ever 😁 After watching quite a few videos, I’m using yours as my guide, except I am going to boil it whole for 10 minutes to make removing the cabbage leaves a little easier 😊 Hope it goes well
Cabbage 🥬 rolls are originally a Slavic (Eastern European recipe). Countries like Poland 🇵🇱, Ukraine 🇺🇦, Romania 🇷🇴, and Russia 🇷🇺 all have their own names for it. You guys definitely Jamaicanized it with the seasonings 🧂 which I love!!! Thanks for sharing! :-)
Gosh, that looks so delicious 😋 I have never tried tgis before but looks so simple and will be making it in the near future. Thanks Deddy's kitchen for sharing 😊❤
Gots NUTIN but love wit respect for you & yo daddy’s kitchen .. I have not watched him N a good while & iv seen his cooking & I love it especially his beef pie’s
Nuff respect Deddy, u brought me back to my youth days with this one. My Uncle Lloyd (R.I.P.) was a chef & he used to make a version of this, he called it stuffed cabbage. It nice so til!! Lawd a mercy
Thank you both, I'm tyring your recipe to day wanting to try Cabbage Rolls .but using the meat I have Black angus stew meat and beef strips. But everything else, thank you it looks delicious and was easy to follow .pray it come out as good as you demonstrated.Blessings
This is a carribean version , in the version im used to there is alot of chopped parsley, minced garlic and onions sauted in butter , paprika , with canned tomatoes mixed in with the meat ,rice and an egg and beef bouillon cube .... and the meat is raw when placed in the wrapper . The leftover leaves are used to cover the top , and there is a small ammount of water and sauce poured over so the cabbage can steam not bake . I think putting the meat in cooked will dry it out , as it takes atleast 30 minutes for the cabbage to become soft .
Hi there. I'm from Germany. I'm half American and German. And thats typical German and polish. I want to say thank you , ne and my Mom Love youre Show.
Poland gave us cabbage rolls! My Mother made them rather frequently on our farm! She called them, “Piggies in a blanket” because she used ground pork or mixture of pork & beef in the rolled cabbage blanket! She cooked them on top of a wood stove in the early days with her homemade tomatoes! Delicious! I’m making them soon! Yummy!❤️🤗😋
It's polish That looks delicious I see a lot of people making it but not like this they don't have the vegetables and stuff like that inside I'm going to have to try it looks delicious
Just cut the core or heart to loosen and place the WHOLE cabbage in water to boil. The leaves come right off and its much easier. Its nice of you to try to make this. Your Ukrainian friend, Tatiana
My friend from Poland taught me how to make this 25 years ago. Still love it😄❤
I learned a few years ago that freezing and thawing your cabbage head before assembling is much easier than blanching. It was a game changer for me and I wanted to pass on the tip. Thanks for all your inspiration.
Courtesy of Martha Stewart. That's where I got the tip.
You're ruining the whole cabbage as opposed to using what you need
I have tried freezing my cabbage...went back to the boiling method after coring the cabbage and putting it in boiling water...freezing alters the taste of the cabbage...at least to me it did...
Yes I used to do that when I made cabbage rolls. It does work.
Old wives tip granny used to do !!
As a poor Caucasian we ate alot cabbage rolls as a child. I loved to see father and daughter cooking together ❤ thanks for this loved the video

It is easier if you cut out core and put whole head of raw cabbage into a pot of boiling water for about 10 min. Each leaf will come off much easier.
Came here to tell him that. Exactly how you said it.
Actually, u can skip boiling altogether by freezing the head of cabbage solid for a couple days, then defrosting. The cabbage will be soft and pliable as if it's been boiled, except doesn't rip as easily. U just cut out the thicker middle of each leaf b4 roll. Yes, this is the normal, popular, process
That's how we do it. Keep the outter layers to lay down in the dish on top of sauce and place the rolls on top of them. We also cut the core out and put the whole head of cabbage in. Boil, let cool then wrap with them.
Sooo Right ! This is one of our family favorite comfort foods , the quicker the prep and cook time the sooner we can ENJOY !

My uncle made them. He worked in a greek restaurant in florida. Love them.

Cabbage rolls are Polish, although Deddy has given it quite the Italian touch with the basil and oregano!! Looking yummy with all the flavors added to the meat and rice mixture.
I love this version of the stuffed cabbage. Daddy has lots of smiles with his daughter and her many critics of what he does while cooking. 😮
If I were rich I'd hire Deddy as my personal chef. I love Jamaican food. My Pastor and wife were Jamaican. God rest their souls.. I wish I could find the seasoning that he uses. Everything always look so good. Keep up the good work and God bless you all.

You can also boil it for a few minutes so it’s softer and the cabbage comes off easier :)
Or u can freeze the cabbage, and when u defrost it, the leaves will be soft, but will not rip as easily as when they have been boiled 😉
We're from the south in the US and all generations grew up eating stuffed cabbage 😊. So easy, healthy and delicious! Thank you for sharing 😊
Im canadian. Learned cabbage rolls from a cook book. I add sauerkraut to my recipe. Gives it a good kick.

Savoy cabbage is better to use as it's easier to roll after blanching. Love your recipe, I'll definitely give it a try.
