Sending missiles into Russia while simultaneously reducing military spending seems very questionable. Is it ignorance or malice? Not sure which is worse.
Like many other leaders (Like our pot smoking Canadian Prime Minister, among others). They have already given Ukraine all this expensive military hardware to keep operational, so they can actually cut their spending, and then give those savings back to Ukraine. Here in Canada, the country is falling apart. (Winter is always tough on structures) and we have no more money to renovate our hospitals, schools, roads, etc.
I'm happy to see that most of the viewers have same impression as me. I would like to share my thought: doesn't matter how armed you are if you lack balls. UK is not alone, moreover it's not even on the eastern flank. Cost of appesment are going to be much higher. Don't waste the time Ukraine is buying us for the rough price.
In about 2008 I attended a seminar put on by the army as a PR exercise to win over public support for the ongoing British presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once the official presentation had finished we had the opportunity to speak informally to the officers involved, who gave us a candid off the record overview of the actual state the countries defences. It was shocking to learn that if Britain was attacked or another major conflict had threatened our interests overseas, there was absolutely nothing we could do about it. The armed forces were already overstretched, way beyond the limit. Since that low point, things have got a whole lot worse, we are in a perilous state and certainly in no position to start throwing our weight around. Successive governments have failed in their first duty, the defence of the realm.
the british navy has no land attack missile to hit the houthis. all british strikes are from airframes taking off from italy. If they had any sense, they would strap a himars onto the deck of a destroyer and send it to the red sea---much cheaper than a bomber flight and cruise missile.
The UK currently has 213 operational Challenger tanks. It's estimated that Russia has lost about 2,000 tanks in Ukraine but still has thousands more in storage and has a production capacity of 700 new tanks a year.
This is nuts. San Diego has a bigger combat air patrol then all of England? When I lived there, there were almost always at least a dozen f 18s flying around. And only 6 destroyers in the whole navy? And 2 friggits? What would Nelson say? How the mighty have fallen.

Britain is by all means just a medium sized country with accompanying economy, trying to cosplay as world power. They do not have means for large armed forces, yet they poke their nose everywhere.
it does weird me out that most governments support and protect ideologies, peoples and movements that help others yet completely deny anything that benefits the most of their citizens. I mean protecting our allies is good but not when you don't even want to benefit your own citizens. That defeats the entire purpose of being apart of that state.
Shouldn't national interest belong to the people before the economy and your allies? I'm sure most people support helping allies but not to their own detriment. Allied nations should be somewhat self reliant shouldn't they?
To put your mind at ease Dr Felton, for someone who daily checks on the eastern front and has genuine interest in OSINT, Russians don't have anything to spare to even consider a strike at any NATO country, they used up their stocks and strategic reserves during the "3 day special operation" that currently is ongoing for last 1000 days and they struggle to obtain hardware for building new ones. Whatever they fire at Ukraine is ongoing production. However they do have ballistic missiles but that would be suicidal move with even limited NATO response and Putin would end up like his idol, a certain Austrian would be painter.

Spending 3 billion from the current budget to restrain Russia is much less expensive than returning to cold war era defense budgets (an extra 50 billion a year)
Mark, with all due respect, the Russian Air Force has been incredibly ineffective against Ukraine which is next door to them, and therefore if they are stupid enough to attack Britain (a NATO member) which is way far away from them, they might not have any Air Force left by the end of their attack.

Been going on for decades mate. Also privatised the water companies with the ongoing disastrous effects. Mark should factor that in plus what would happen to all the money sloshing around the City of London: it would flee overnight, tanking the pound driving the cost of imported food even higher.
@@Jonesy-0LOL, a defense budget of 4 bln $ before the war. Ukraine is a poor country, where corruption ruled. If Putler fires ICBMs at the UK, NATO's Article 5 alliance will be triggered immediately. Putler will never open Pandora's box of nuclear weapons, especially not against a country that has nuclear weapons of its own. Putler and his henchmen have perfected the game of fear, just because this psychopath Medvedev shouts that Russia will turn the British Isles into a nuclear Armageddon, it doesn't have to happen.
There's a few problems with this video I'm afraid. -Firstly as fun as conventional attacks are to theorise, we have nukes, and unlike the russians we keep them best as we can in working hard. -secondly, well... nato, fpda etc -thirdly, these attacks all rely on russia being actually capable of what they say they are, something they have repeatedly failed at in ukraine, losing most of their navy to a country without a navy and modern land tactics consisting of throwing enough men at the wall and hoping it'll stick. Imagine how they'll face a fresh military with hatred of the russians at a similar level to the Ukrainians. Most I suspect will happen is what happened post-falklands and the government will just increase defence spending for a bit then lower it again when no one's looking.
It's a thoroughly shitty situation. But as we learned in WW2 we have to stand up to authoritarian bullies, appeasement just has them wanting to take more and more. Abandoning Ukraine doesn't just mean handing Russia a huge win and territory gain, it will embolden them to try it again with other countries.
The difference is that we hadn't egged Nazi Germany into attacking Poland, they did it just because Hitler wanted it. I'm not on Russia's side about this, but the US and UK have been trying to pull Ukraine into NATO for literally no other reason than to piss Russia off. Get this "appeasement" narrative out of your thick skull.
Dont worry. They are in great contact with the 322 Squadron (11 x F35) at Leeuwarden (The Netherlands). They also have a MQ-9 Reaper that can track cruise missiles....
Weird video. Britain is not lobbing Storm Shadow missiles at Russia (though Ukraine might be). And why would Russia launch a war against a nuclear-armed NATO member when he can't even defeat Ukraine?
Yes it’s defo scaremongering rather than an obvious threat, but the points made are actually true and our shores and skies haven’t ever been this defenceless.
You do realize Ukraine has zero way of firing Storm Shadows on their own right? They require preprogrammed targeting data that only the manufacturers and users can provide and require satellite guidance. Even then, I bet the operators on the ground sound like your typical man from Lancaster.
This isn't weird at all. Israhell and America are going to start a war with Iran any day now. China is in a trade war and that will escalate. North Korea is escalating on daily. America is banning weapons sales to the UAE because they are selling weapons to Sudan and Russian proxy. WW3 is happening. 😮
You're living in denial I see. Britain shouldn't be providing Ukraine with anything: no weapons, no advisors, no cash - nothing; if only because, as is outlined in the video that you think is so "weird", the money could be better spent on other things that are actually needed by the people of Britain (like nurses and doctors).
Is it possible that Putin is not fighting his war on an entirely rational basis? Or maybe he's just trying at this point to prevent his cronies from removing him from office?
No surprise really, you just have to look at how unprepared we were for the Covid pandemic, and how inept successive governments have been at controlling illegal immigration to the British Isles.
Storm shadow missiles have been fired into crimea, which russia sees as russia, since 2023. Allowing them to be fired at the rest of russia is hardly an escalation
Actually it is, because Russian territory prior to 2014 is internationally seen as theirs. Russia has allowed this as well, since the technicalities meant there was no legal reason for retaliation. However, now that they are firing at internationally accepted Russian territory, the Russians have to retaliate by their own laws.
they do f all anyway,. they are not a Vunder Veapon, the outcome will be the same unless they are stupid enough to target a nuclear reactor, then we might see the fur fly.
While I have respect for Dr. Felton, as a layman I find this video to be very slanted and editorialized. For instance: - He only mentions the UK based radar facilities as being available to detect Russian incursions. In fact, both the UK and US have spy satellites that could warn of any possible attack long before any radar facilities could. This isn't even considering intelligence sources that would let the US, UK, and NATO know well in advance of a coming attack. - He states the land based Typhoon fighters that would be available to intercept Russia bombers, but makes no mention of the at least 30 F-35 fighters available to the RAF and RN. - How many Blackjack or Bear bombers are actually, really, available to use against any enemy? As the Ukraine war has clearly demonstrated, Russia has been unable to gain the air superiority over Ukraine that all of the 'experts' predicted they would have. The evidence seems to support the facts that their pilots are poorly trained and their aircraft are poorly maintained. - The UK has fewer airbases than it used to, but this isn't the 1940s. It would naive to think that the airbases they do have, particularly ones shared with the US, aren't well protected from air attack. - Same goes for the number of Royal Navy bases. The UK has three naval bases. Russia also has three naval bases in the west (including the Black Sea fleet, which Russia had to move out of Sevastopol because they couldn't protect it). And again, the Ukraine war has exposed how poorly maintained and protected Russia's own fleet is. Russia's overwhelming material advantage at the start of the Ukraine war has been severely reduced, as they have proven to be largely incompetent on land, sea, and air, with massive losses in both men and equipment. Russia directs a lot of money towards its military, but it is also well known that corruption within Russia ensures that much of that money never reaches its intended destination. To suggest that Russia is in a position to seriously considering attacking the UK or any other country right now is laughable. Putin has warned of consequences at every 'escalation' of the conflict as NATO has provided military aid to Ukraine, and yet nothing has happened for the simple reason that they can't back it up. As it stands today, Russia would lose a wider war, and Putin knows it. While I agree that the UK should definitely redirect some of their spending priorities, the arguments presented here are not compelling and I believe undermine Dr. Felton's credibility.
Absolutely. Apart from making them rethink how they spend our money, it might stop them behaving on the world stage like they still command an empire. "The first duty of the UK government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure".
The Tories had over 2 years of war in Ukraine to prepare Britain for increased conflict with Russia and they didn't. Funny how Mark forgot to mention that. Mark would benefit greatly from listening to The Telegraph podcast on the Ukraine war.
The same threats existed during the cold war. The QRA has other sites it can operate out of like RAF Leeming. RAF radar stations have received extensive upgrades and hardening. Interlinked with NATO allies they can get the heads up early. Others assets include an increasing number of F35b's, P8 Posiedons both British and American. More can be done but i fully agree with supporting Ukraine. Although I would give them the 3 billion out of the aid budget not our defence budget.
Interesting warning. As an American, I'd like to see our European allies invest in their own military rather than relying so much on the US to underwrite their security. As this video dramatically illustrates, the US would not be able to prevent a surprise attack and can only react. Furthermore, Americans have been debating for decades about whether it's fair to us to provide so much security at taxpayer expense. Trump didn't lose the election for making NATO members pay their share, it's probably one of his most popular policies. It's deeply regrettable that Russia and other autocracies have become so aggressive lately. We have all been perfectly happy to get along and trade with them until this insane and pointless Ukraine invasion. Finally, if European allies armed themselves better, autocracies would be less inclined to think that democracy is inherently weak and decadent.
Well spoken. Europe has woken up from a deep slumber with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Germany spending 1 Trillion EUR on defence, most other european countries following suit. Disarming was a big mistake. Becoming reliant on Russian gas and energy was bad as well.
@@johnknight8152Sure, you lefties love the meddling word. I agree, US taxpayers should not be meddling in Europe. Let the Brits and Germans and everyone else over there spend their own money to defend themselves. The United States shouldn't have to.
While I wholeheartedly agree that us Europeans should take defence more seriously and start carrying our weight, let's not forget that the world's security infrastructure after WWII was built by the Americans and English (to an extent), so that this infrastructure ensured their continued dominance. It was the US that took on the role of the world's policeman, and it benefited greatly from this role - politically and economically (especially the military industrial complex). So America's position is not all 'bad', far from it.
While justified in laying into Keir, you should also note that much of these decisions, such as the decommissioning of the AWACS were done by the previous Tory government, along with much of the damage to the NHS, armed forces ect. I absolutely agree that the UK needs to improve its air defences. But its worth considering some more facts: In the last 1000 days Russian army, air force, navy and cyber forces have failed to destroy Ukraine's will to resist. Russia has suffered more than half a million casualties, lost 300 aircraft, and much of its Black Sea Fleet and has reduced missile stocks. The UK is a member of NATO. Ukraine is being pumped with military aid and it is on a war footing. We've talking about a preemptive strike on a small number of lightly defended targets. The runways can be fixed, the planes and radar equipment less so.
"don’t you think they would use that capability to knock out" Dude, UA has lost over 95% of its airforce, and they're basically running gauntlets to survive every time they attempt an airstrike. RF has conducted over 250 thousand airstrikes during the SMO. UA has conducted less than 5 thousand. And even that may be an overestimation. Also, over 75% of UA strikes, have had their munitions shot down before they hit any targets. Do you understand, that UA started 2022 with 3 times the number of SAMs, as the entire Nato combined? Low count. Plus at least 8 thousand Stingers. Simple fact, RF HAS wiped out the UA airbases. But Soviet era aircraft are not primadonnas, they don't need perfect and whole runways to fly, so keeping them destroyed is essentially impossible.
@@RpattoYT "is being pumped with military aid and it is on a war footing." A beautiful thing about the Nation State is that it can do many things at once. Obviously, the UK government is not doing enough domestically though. Improving domestic policy does not have to come at the expense of supporting Ukraine, which is currently keeping the lid on WW3. As long as the war is in Ukraine, we are safe. As long as Russia doesn't win this war, international law and order can be maintained.
This was the day he stopped being an objective historian altogether. He starts by mocking the current government, elected by a significant majority, no matter whether they're any less crap than the last lot. He ends by seeing fit to say to that same government: "I reckon you should do this, and this, and that". And inbetween, there's no mention of the British nuclear submarine fleet, nor of the fact that NATO could just as easily launch a pre-emptive strike on Russia, however pointless/ineffectual it may be.
Any weapons system being utilized on the front line to mitigate enemy forces attacking a foreign ally is money well spent. That is after all, what they were built for. I wonder if others would appreciate if Britain or any other state would appreciate the cost of having to launch an expeditionary ground force to assist an ally under attack by a foreign power and would deem it cost worthy. It would be an interesting thought experiment to consider what would have happened to Czechoslovakia if they were given such assistance after Germany annexed the Sudetenland.
Funny you say that. Neville Chamberlain and the western allies could have stopped Hitler and the Nazis when he announced conscription in 1935 and when he remilitarized the Rheinland in 1936 as both were in violation of the Versailles Treaty and the Locarno Pact. France could have ended Hitler’s regime with its army in 1935 and 1936 had they had the fortitude and resolve to do so. Now we have resurgent Russia attempting conquer independent states in Europe based on a flawed justification that these independent countries belong to them. This would include the Baltic states and as we all know Ukraine, and Belarus (which is in reality a puppet Russian state).

While I have respect for Dr. Felton, as a layman I find this video to be very slanted and editorialized. For instance:
- He only mentions the UK based radar facilities as being available to detect Russian incursions.
Very well put..With very fair points..This video is Felton’s worst by far.!

It's your meddling that landed us in this mess.
Well spoken. Europe has woken up from a deep slumber with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Germany spending 1 Trillion EUR on defence, most other european countries following suit. Disarming was a big mistake. Becoming reliant on Russian gas and energy was bad as well.
@@johnknight8152 Honest question here- why is Russia invading Ukraine the fault of Americans?
But its worth considering some more facts:
In the last 1000 days Russian army, air force, navy and cyber forces have failed to destroy Ukraine's will to resist. Russia has suffered more than half a million casualties, lost 300 aircraft, and much of its Black Sea Fleet and has reduced missile stocks.
The UK is a member of NATO. And has a significant USAF presence who can be expected to help in the defence of the UK. How likely is an outright conventional or nuclear attack by Russia on the UK mainland ? Imho not very.
That number is highly doubtful. There are independent swedish research who have found that Ukraine is inflating the losses of Russians.

Ukraine is being pumped with military aid and it is on a war footing. We've talking about a preemptive strike on a small number of lightly defended targets. The runways can be fixed, the planes and radar equipment less so.
Where are those fabled f 16's mate
"don’t you think they would use that capability to knock out"
Dude, UA has lost over 95% of its airforce, and they're basically running gauntlets to survive every time they attempt an airstrike.
@@RpattoYT "is being pumped with military aid and it is on a war footing."

A beautiful thing about the Nation State is that it can do many things at once.
19-20% is not a majority.
Pre-emptive strike? Russia will see that coming from the satellites they own.
Even Neville Chamberlain saw the writing on the wall and got Britain re-armed in time for ‘39.
