They like lots of reflective light, they like warm temperature with moderate watering & plenty of shade in the afternoon. They can take direct light in early morning, but put them in a spot with afternoon shade & water when the soil gets a bit dry on top, they will grow like mad.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK aw I’m so glad I could lend some knowledge, it makes me feel really nice that you pinned my comment 😭🥰I’ve kept oxalis for a couple years now, and mine thrive in late spring & summer. Thanks for all the love, love❤️ ❤️
My late wife raised and gave away purple shamrocks for 20 years. After she died, I continued to raise and give them away in memory of her. They do seem to prefer rain water. I grow them outside and they do much better there. My greens and variegated purple crossed a few years ago. I now have variegated greens too. I grow them in the shade of autumn olive plants. The shamrocks are invasive. When they can form seeds, they throw them like jewel weed. Have fun with them. Good Luck, Rick
I have three varieties of oxalis plants. I have them In a west window, and I water very frequently, as otherwise their leaves get limp. All three are absolutely puffy, full of leaves and flowers. They're currently my faves!
Also I've been using spring water with watered down fertilizer. My friend and I both got our tiny pots of iron cross at the same time. Hers has maybe 3 or so stems. Mine has been transplanted and its Going to be split this week. Aptly, her name is Medusa. I'm very proud of her!
Love oxalis, I have one which flowered when I bought it, 2 years ago. Last year I reppot it and keep it outdoors since then. Hasn't flowered yet, I 'm affraid it 's going into dormancy now. Anyway I love it. Thank you, Liz, for sharing.
So funny I just made a post about mine yesterday morning. I dug it up at the end of the summer and I took one bulb and planted it in a pot and brought it indoors and it’s been throwing off leaves and flowers ever since and it’s just absolutely perfect and I was saying how I can’t believe I kept it alive all winter!🤣🤣
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Wow that’s a lot of money! I just never get used to the price differences between some plants over here and there! I want to do a time lapse of mine when I turn the lights on in the morning I think that is so cool to watch them move with the light! Well it’s a good thing for you is once you plant them in the ground and the pollinators pollinate those flowers, you’re good to go they are going to spread like crazy!
Thank you SO much for doing this video!!! My boyfriend brought home two leaves and put them in water. I planted them in soil once they had roots. I had never seen or heard of this plant before. He got it out of his Mom’s garden. One of the leaves died within a few days of planting. The other leaf grew two more leaves. But then nothing. I love this plant so much but had no idea if I would ever have more than three leaves. I had no idea they formed corms. I will put my little 3 leaf outside and see if anything grows. What temps can they tolerate? We only get two weeks of spring in Texas and it’s starting now. It will be in the 90’s soon. And thank you for the plastic cup trick!! Such a great idea to keep plants upright.
We have the same weather but our seasons are reverse. It's autumn here in Australia and Spring in Texas. They're about to wake up soon in your area as mine will go to sleep/dormancy soon.
Oh my I haven't seen that type of plant that is so so purple. I love the color purple so pretty. And it's shape as a heart. THANK YOU Liz for sharing. Going to try and look for that plant lol lol lol. God Bless.
Hello Liz, I truly enjoy watching your videos!! You are so knowledgeable about succulents and I’m learning so much thanks to you! I have some oxalis too and I just love how they close at night, oxalis are beautiful plants!
Mine get full sun some of the day and get beautiful variegation like yours but never fully revert to green. Ooh, and the bees really love the flowers too!
Amazing! The first time i have these i put them on my porch but stray dogs kept digging them and i have to put them on pots.. it seems that dogs love to dig these plant.. The second one was the same to when i planted them on the ground😥
Hi LizK, Love these Oxalis plants. Actually the green ones grow wild up here in Central Queensland, and are considered as weeds! The wild ones have two kinds of leaves, one is heart shaped, the other is triangular. Most people hate them and are always pulling them out .I have a purple one that I bought, it's not doing so well, but I think it is getting too much sun, so I'm planning to do some work on it. Also, one of my green ones has some purple leaves coming! There is a smaller Oxalis which is a real pest. My green ones have pink flowers and look beautiful when growing en-mass in the ground. They die off in the winter and come back in spring. Thank you for featuring these beautiful 'weeds'!
A lot of loved plants when so easy to grow becomes a weed. Some of my favourites are Gazania, Gaura and erigeron just to name a few had become weeds in my garden. Seems like I'm forever pulling them out.
@@jyotivithalkar151 Hello this is Orieldel, Re uploading a picture of my green Oxalis, I'm don't know how to do this in You Tube, I would appreciate someone showing me how.😀
my oxalis is really loved by mealy bugs. once i spray them with isopropyl alcohol, turns out the leaves are so delicate, the purple colours transferred to my hand, and the leaves is wilted 😆. fortunately they bounce back normal and beautiful again.
I managed to keep them alive indoors in winter. Our coldest indoor temperature range is between 14°C/57.2°F to 18°C/64.4°F. One in morning sun, the other upstairs where the temperature is much warmer.
Great video, & you just gained a new subscriber. I had one that had grown like crazy. Beautiful with the purple & the pretty pink leaves. My question though is how often do you water them when they die in the winter? This flower is very special to me & I’m trying my best to keep it alive. Please help 😢😢💕
Thanks very much for watching and the sub, Stacie. To answer your question RE watering.... If the plant shows signs of going dormant, I would water only when the soil is completely dry. Unless you can maintain temperature in winter(above 15°C| 59°F), best holding off on watering. Otherwise, they will continue to grow through winter in a warm environment. It will also be beneficial to grow it under grow light. Good luck and wishing you all the very best with your Purple shamrock. Hope she grows and grow. 🥰
That’s all it grew in a whole year? Wow. Mine has exploded since I put it outside. It went from about twice the size of this after one to triple the size in about 6 months.
We get frost up to -10°C|14°F and this has survived outside. They will die off but will come back when temperature gets warmer. In places with colder temperature, they might need to be brought inside.🥰
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizKthanks for the reply. It does not ideally get that cold in the UK, but I was not sure if I should bring them in or could leave outside. They just started flowering this week.

I’ve gotten even better results in a month by leaving them outdoors in an indirect light area. I also use Mycorrhizae powder. 😊

They're quite challenging to grow here in Canberra. They seem to go dormant when it's too hot or too cold. Thanks for watching. 🥰
They are in the same family as clovers/shamrocks I believe and were I live they like bright indirect light and don’t like to dry completely out

Should purple shamrocks grow under direct sunlight?
I find that it seems to prefer a bright shady area. It doesn't seem to mind the morning sun but the color fades in direct midday and afternoon sun.
Will it survive a New England winter?
It will if brought inside. They grow better indoors. 🥰
