- This video shows you how to divide and propagate your Love plant (also known as purple shamrock and by its latin name: Oxalis triangularis). These house plants grow rapidly, so it's good to divide them, creating more plants for you and keeping your original plant happy.
Thank you for your very clear demonstration on how to divide and care for this lovely plant, you also nailed the watering info for me too 🙏
I agree that there’s no need to buy plants. I love to get cuttings from friends and family and bring them on that way whenever I see the plant I remember the friend, my garden is full of friends 👍
My mom gave me an oxalis that happened into a plant I gifted her on Mother’s Day. It was in a 12” clay pot, and 8 yrs later, remains. I put in outside in shade all summer, and back inside in a sunny spot all winter. My mother’s been gone nearly six years, and soon I’ll attempt to divide and share. I’m in western Massachusetts, and today it’s 9°F. Thank you!
Good guidence about Oxalia. Nice sharing.
I live in North Texas and I have the green leaf variety with pink flowers in our front yard under our oak trees. They are so beautiful! They come back every year and they need little to no maintenance. Yesterday, I tried dividing the bulbs to have it spread to other parts of the front yard. Thanks for the watering advice. I will try not to give them too much water. Crossing my fingers!
My Shamrock plant looks very much like yours, grown from a single stem that was given to me years ago. I've been wanting to repot it for years after seeing a friend's potted in a large, oblong pot - it was absolutely perfect for the way this plant grows, but I always chicken out 😂 I have to go for it now though as I will be gifting a portion to my son's tutor (who has never left my home without first walking over to the plant to admire it. I swear I cringed watching you separate the stems, I can't get it out of my head that I'm not breaking up a family lol (I totally feel awesome about this process now that I know they get angry 😂) It's now or never I guess, thank you!
Oh it really does respond to what you do to it. Open a Curtain for more light or move it, or soak the bottom in the sink a few minutes, turn it in another direction, transplants, thinning, on & on. Sometimes it feels like a pet, it reacts. Love them! Mine were outside and I brought it in inside, it pouted & then boy it flourished. Now If I take it outside it has a hissy fit. Love them!
My favorite house plant as well, thank you for this video. I will start sharing my favorite plant
I have one which I have had for over 20 years its in a large pot but I've never repoted it . Maybe I should but it is blooming beautifully, and ofcourse it goes dormant in the winter. I have also got a new one grown from a corner of a leaf which i put in soil and watered a little when dry .
I really love this plant... Thank you so much for presentation..
Nice maam super
Nice one
just love this plant, just purchased 1 a few weeks ago, hope it survives, thanx for the info !
Occasionally every few months feed it with coffee grounds. These plants thrive in acidic soil and the coffee grounds will give it everything it needs.
@@theresakelly1915 oh i dont drink coffee, i use organic bio fertilizer and yes its still alive ! My mum uses coffee ground on most of her plants, but thanx for the tip anyway!
@@MissHellfire you might want to see pictures of the size and health of my plants! They are enormous and gorgeous!!!!
Wow. Ganda
Thanks for this as I will have to split mine soon. Yesterday in the morning we had a little baby stem coming out the dirt, it might have been an inch long, to my surprise that evening it wasn’t a baby anymore that stem grew approximately 3 inches that day. Wish I would have a camera on it. I love this plant. I have never had one, but bought it last February and just love watching it. It’s like having another pet, but easier to take care of. Should I give it plant food? I know sine plants thrive on it and others not so much. Have a Great Day!
Wow 😍 bellissima pianta💚
Getting the sections apart is very difficult because they intertwine. I usually get 2 to 3 dozen children from my Mama plant. Mama is huge, 16" pot, gets full sun for 5 hours per day and drinks about a pint per day. She always grows vigorously in warm weather but slows way down in cold weather because she is in a room that often goes down to 60*F at night. The casualties can be stuck in a glass of water and will often produce corms at their base so that they can be planted. You did a very nice video. Do you have any of the green triangularis? I sometimes mix the purple and the green in a pot which is kinda kool. With time the green will take over the pot so I have to do some dividing. I usually give away about 50 plants each year. Good Luck, Rick
Love my shamrock plants. I have a green leaf with white flowers, I also have a purple with purple flowers and my newest plant is a green leaf with purple flowers.
Mine loves crushed eggshells and coffee grounds. They cause the leaves to turn a very dark lush purple. I also only use collected rain water to water them!
This plant originated in Brazil. The leafs and flowers are edible in small quantities.
It thrives in acidic soil so about every three months sprinkle the plant with coffee grounds.
do you just put the coffee grounds and eggshells on top of the soil?
@@p0litepunk no! I bury them so they decompose faster! They feed the plants for months!
@@p0litepunk the coffee grounds i sprinkle on top! The egg shells I bury when I add soil. My my plants are 2 1/2 feet in diameter with the same exact height!!! They are gorgeous!
@@theresakelly1915 what kind of potting soil do you use and do you use a pot with drainage holes? Thanks
i have this oxalis green plant or butterfly plant.. im afraid to transfer in other pot.. thank you for your help now i can make transfer more and grow them beautifully ☺️😍❤️
Interesting plant. First time knowing there is such a plant. might got a new set plant beside cp
Have you ever had to deal with 'rust' on these purple oxalis? My 3 plants, in London, UK, appeared 'clean' when i bought them about 3 months ago, but I had not seen the disease before, so I did not check for it. I took them out of the original pots and replanted into a large window-ledge trough but now the undersides of many leaves are badly affected. I took off most of the leaves on the worst affected plant, and that appears to have halted the spread, but obviously it weakens the plant, and now the 2 others are both somewhat affected. How should I proceed with over-wintering them, and restarting them next spring? I have seen high-potash feed recommended on USA sites, but do not know what to buy in UK- or what else to do instead?
Please tell me where to find that mister! Thanks for the tips. Lovely video.
I just bought 12 bulbs. Contemplating how many to plant. Honestly, I don't quiet understand. Does the plant multiply itself and creats more bulbs (that can be later separated like shown in this video)?. How many stems ("butterflies ") come out of each bulb?
Yeah, it multiply itself... When the plant gets thick you can start dividing...
Lovely
Will it be tight and nice ?? So a little thin? I have one like that. I need advice☺🌱
Da da daaaah ....., love it! 😍
Ur video is cute, but why u left the holes open at bottom of the pot.will this plant still grow well?
Try separating the leaves before dividing the bulbs
Thank you for the tip, I'm gonna try it at home!
Can you split the bulbs?
Great tips.. Thank you 🌱🍀🎋☘️🦋
I love my Oxalis. Was given one and now have four. My question is, when the flowers on a flower stem die, I have been gently removing the stem from the base. But is it better to leave dead flowers on the plant so that they can perhaps provide food for new stems?
No, I'd take anything dead from any plant immediately
I have never taken the flowers off after they die and my plant is thriving!
My fave plant too!
Those casualties are still able to live
My oxalis’ leaves started to turn pink... do you have an idea why is it so? Thanks!
Hi! my oxalis is closing during the day, is there an explanation for that? they usually close at night... but why during the day?
Angela H avoid direct sunlight
To much sunlight AND you need to feed it coffee grounds every three months. This plant thrives in acidic soil. Or you can sprinkle pine needles around the sufferance which will feed the plant as well.
That division was brutal
Me too, and scared since my original p,ant is over 25 years old‼️but she is doing great and I have given to friends as gifts now‼️
Friends keep this plant when you divide too.....
Hi hanna. Do you think love plant can grow in a metal pot? Thanks
Alternatively you can just chop everything down about 2 inches from the soil and they will regrow
that's not propagation tho
How does Oxalis reproduce in nature? By its flowers ?
Please could you tell me what type of soil it needs? Many thanks!
You can use regular potting soil and sprinkle coffee grounds around the top every three months! These plants are native to Brazil and thrive in acidic soil.
hi! will this plant live even if you replant those with roots only? (that is, those withouth bulbs in them, just roots and the leaves)
I’ve grown from leaf cutting….it’s quite slow though
I understand not getting waterlogged but it felt like it got all of 5 drops from the mister.
You can put a long stem in water to root. It has to have the little bit on the end though
But this is a much quicker process than that
Is this plant indoor or outdoor
Does it work the same for olden oxalis?
Hi nice video where do I bye this from?? And where did you get it from? Thanks
Aisha Begum ...sometimes in local grocery chains they have them in the plant department.....amazon has them too.....farmers market has em....I put mine in small window boxes so I can move them around...never any hot afternoon sun tho...even closes leaves if sun is too strong....
Small pink flowers will arrive when warm weather sets in...zone 6 here....had mine going for many years now....many give away plants....
When you trans plant it the ones that break off can you root them in water?
Yes, I've done it many times
O wish the camera was closer so that I can see as you break it up and separate it
Can bulbs grow new bulbs? I thought you can divide a plant of 10 bulbs in two smaller plants of 5 and it will just stay smaller and not able to grow more bulbs? How is this working because I have one1plant and only want to dividend if it grows bigger. nice video
They always grow new or bigger bulbs
Can you grow the ones with no bulb?
Is this a outdoor plant ?
Mine is really sad.. They really don't stand is it the way it was repotted? Did I kill my shamrock? Or maybe the way I water the plant? I repotted it this morning.. Is it normal?
Some oxalis triangularis plants will go droopy when repotting. Tha's what mine did. If the bulbs of your plant are not rotten because of overwatering, everything will be fine. I removed all the leaves and new ones are growing.
Why does mine looks darker than yours. Is there any other types?
Yes, there's a variegated version
How to in door or out door plants?
I like to eat Oxalis triangularis 🐈💖
Do you sell these plants How do I get one
You can buy them at Home Depot or Lowe’s. They thrive in acidic soil so I feed mine coffee grounds every three months.
Compost or soil?
i just trasnplanted mine yesterday and bottom watered and is flopping down :(
You can cut off the leaves and they will regrow from the bulb later
Thats normal. Just dont drown it in water. Wait for it to stand by itself. No sun pls...
What exactly is in the “compost”?
Can I have one please? 🙏🏼
does it flower?
yes
you can also eat them, great for salads
I think it is toxic, watch amount
They are toxic!
plant is beautiful just like you 💋💞tu tu tu tu tuuuuuuu
Mine got shocked 😅😅😅
Yo cada la cambio de maceta se muere
minha filha fale em português, você parece que está me esculhanbando
