- This video shows three ways to create loops in AUM that can be used to perform live. I cover recording a track and using the File Player to loop it, using Atom Piano Roll to create MIDI loops, and using Audio Damage's Enso to create audio loops on the fly.
Chapters:

Thank you for taking the time to share what you know.
Thanks for all the great music and demo’s you’ve provided ! Learning and enjoying lots 😎
Excellent. The entire AUM basics series is a must see.
Just found your channel and your videos have really opened my eyes as to what is possible with AUM. Thanks.
Thanks for taking up suggestion man! Great video!
Subbed for your AUM tutorials.
You’re a great teacher.
Thank you Logan 🎵😎
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for another great video!
3.7k subscribers now. Keep it up! Great content
Good stuff, Logan.
Awesome once again Logan! One little tip when adding extra midi tracks, or even extra effects to a track, you don’t have to drag up to tap the plus symbol at the bottom, you can just tap on the line (on an audio track) or underneath the first midi controller icon and it will add it for you.
THANK YOU!!! I’ve been annoyed by that forever!
Thanks helpful. I love Enso but can be tricky sometimes.
+1 subscriber 👍🏻 great vids, nice energy & helpful content - thanks Logan
Thanks for the sub!
Thank you so much for helping me! I had felt like I lost Music for a while and it was so frustrating So I decided to try out IOS. I’m so happy I tried. Thank you for your guidance!!!
Glad I could help!
Thanks, very informative. Any experience with a similar setup in AUM using the l7 looper and any advantages/disadvantages over enso or other au3 loopers?
Rêally helpful vids Logan, thanks a bunch. Tip - you can create an additional effect/Processor slot by double-tapping: the line (audio), next to the line (midi) instead of pulling it down (if that’s easier). Edit. Oops! Great minds and all that.
I like to highlight the importance of saving your AUM project before a first recording. Because than you are sure the files will be placed in the AUM project folder.
Because now you are importing files from an untitled project. And when you do save and name it, the Recordings added to the fileplayer will still be in that untitled folder. Which you are gonna move or delete after you find 20 untitled folders with audiofiles and your iPad screams for some space.
Do this before you realize the mess you created.
Create a 2 folder deep folder structure before starting. Think about this before because when jamming you will simply not do it. ( myself included )
Especially in AUM.
Create Root Folders for type of projects, templates. Done. FINISH in DAW and move these to a iCloud folder.
Spend time on naming your AUM tracks so that the filenames will be good named after a AUM recording.
This all seems like common sense but this type of organizing simply goes a lot slower on iOS and that means its also very easy ignore it and get a huge mess quickly. Just my 2 cents.
If working with midi , just record it to audio when its good or great. You will thank me later.
And also create a master channel so you also record a ‘full version’ reference when recording individual channel. 👍🏻
All good advice! Thanks!
I completely agree about the length of the clip in Atom. Even if I could set a default number of bars it would be great. Some great tips in here.
Atom 2 solves everything
@@rgrandles Yep, they made some great improvements for version 2.
Thank you Logan. Some great tips there.
Finally! Someone who talks loudly and clearly enough!
I have certainly never been accused of being too quiet. Especially by my wife. 🤣
Need to use a pot controller for that. Found this with many different apps. It’s the CC message and the app
Hi Logan, Thanks for the great tutorial!!! It answered several of my questions I've been having. I didn't know what the 'bypass' midi learn would do; that's good to know! What I'm wondering, though, is 1) why you chose not to use the 'play enabled' button to get your bass to come in, and 2) if Piano Roll can be quantized the same way as the file player so that your bass, keyboard, or whatever comes in at the top of the next quantized length, so that you're not dependent on perfect timing in launching it. On a related note (sorry for so many questions--I'm a noob), 3) is there any way to get apps like Riffer or Fugue Machine to come in at the top of the pattern when launched? Thanks again!
Hey John, sorry it's taken so long to reply.
1) I have trouble getting the Play Enable button to work right with a controller. For some reason it doesn't want to toggle every time.
2) I'm not sure about quantizing Piano Roll, I know they just released a new version that has some updated features, so maybe that's in there. I'll try to get a demo video out once I have a chance to buy and check it out.
3) I have not used Riffer, but with Fugue Machine, I have asked the developer about quantizing when you hit the play button for each playhead and he is considering adding it, but he's busy with other projects for the time being. I would love to see that feature soon.
I hope that helped, even though I didn't really give you good solutions....
I’m a “bassist first” and plucked standup is also my model D goto patch. Great minds….
Great video mate awesome. Was your guitar recorded through the open mic? Thanks 🙏
I’m running out of the Line Out on my Vox MV50 AC and directly into the Tascam 4x4. Channel 2 in AUM.
Thanks for watching!
Atom definitely needs Ableton-like loop duplicate etc controls to make that editing easier
32:00 did you tried to switch toggle mode in AUM or change cc type on your midi ctrl.
Thanks Logan
What i needed was enso ✌️❤️
You could put some markers to ‘’chapterize’’? your video.
All the parts of it are great and helpfull anyway ⭐️
Long live ios music and your channel
Cheers from Aubervilliers, France
Enso is a lot of fun! Highly suggested! I keep forgetting to go back and add time codes, thanks for the reminder.
Hint: there's a major marker needed at ua-cam.com/video/Ai36tIPQgI8/v-deo.html
Amazing video, liked and subscribed. FYI, your voice is a little low compared to the commercials, but np. Thanks!
I'm constantly trying to get the audio levels set right. Unfortunately, UA-cam actually plays with the levels as well when I upload my videos... I'm sorry about the volume differences, I know that drives me crazy! Thanks for the sub!
I guess win I think of looping. I think of 2 types of loops. 1 u show.
Another is a double loop where 1 loop comes and goes while live.
Almost like u not having pre - recorded.
I guess I really don't know what a loop is or I guess I do.
Because I also would wanna start on the upbeat of the 3rd note.
If u have any ideas on this please share in a video.
After I have completely watched and rewatch thoroughly your video.
I guess the more looping I have the better for my comment above.
I guess I wanna more of a mixer approach to my looping mute channels fade in fade out type stuff.
Where it's automated inna timeline.
So far from what u showed u can do dat.
I guess the real is the trick of my person achieving such.
(( My own personal doubts coming to surface. ))
why are you using the midi controller strip instead of using the Launchkey directly with the moog and retro piano?
The Launchkey doesn't have a built in sequencer, so I needed to record the loop into Atom Piano Roll have that go into Retro Piano. If I were just playing the keyboard directly, I would go straight into Piano Roll.
I have a question. If the drums have their own loop. Where are the keys and Bass looping?
Atom is looping the keys and bass line on MIDI 4
@@MobileMusicMaker Could you loop everything with Atom?
@@bjamminsincebirth3494 is a midi Sequencer, anything that’s MIDI you can. I use Enso for looping audio
Couldn’t you just use Loopy for looping and connect it through Audio Bus
17:50 no need to drag up on the channel to add an FX or MIDI slot, just double tap/click on the line.
Thank you! Someone pointed that out to me earlier. Saves a lot of time.
Maybe the switching from the Launchkey needs to be set to latch rather than momentary (if that’s possible) in order to mute synced midi tracks.
Tried that. I’d really like the start/stop button to work so I can do it in time with the sync quantum rather than it being instant
Logan J. Smith sorry, got the wrong end of the stick. I tried to do a similar thing with my Nektar keyboard. Had the same problem. I’ve found this in a forum, maybe it will help I haven’t tried it though:
Just as an experiment, I tried this once. Defined my regular MIDI interface as a control surface, and used MIDI learn to map tracktion functions to the bottom few keys on the keyboard.
So the lowest C on the keyboard was Play/Stop, D was Record, E was rewind to beginning.
The rest of the keys get passed through normally, and those few worked, even though the keyboard didn't have "special function" transport control keys.
Have you tried ApeMatrix?
I have not. I'll put it on the list!
Use i7 looper as a auv3 inside aum.
Thanks for your comment! At the time that this video was made, L7 was not yet auv3 compatible. Now that it is, I will check it out!
Up to snuff
Starts at six minutes
Thanks, I know my intros can drag a bit. I try to put chapter markers in there, but I don't always remember.
Just found your channel and your videos have really opened my eyes as to what is possible with AUM. Thanks.
Thanks! I hope you find it useful
