    I put the Deity S-Mic 2 to use in a REALLY challenging situation: recording a hypercar in the Nevada desert. Hear my thoughts how it compares to my favorite sound effects recording mic!

    I'm glad you didn't trash this mic. Good to know we have decent budget options lying around for dialogue

      Definitely a good mic, and highly recommended for dialog recording and a lot of sound effects recording. It’s these crazy high-demand kinds of situations that really show the differences in performance. And even though I wouldn’t use it for this, the fact that it still performed okay is REALLY cool for like $350.

    Thanks for the review, I'm just beginning to get into audio engineering stuff and I'm amazed how much of a difference some things make.
    Really appreciate your content, thank you very much for the videos. Your software tricks already made my projects much better

    Just a quick note, Alex, to thank you for keeping at the UA-cam thing. I know it can seem thankless sometimes and a lot of creators get frustrated at growth, but I really appreciate having your perspective on new audio gear.

    t😍hanks for sharing! I am using the deity s-mic2 for dialog 90% of the time, and i am happy with it. Hopefully I will be able to try the Sennheiser as well

      It’s great for dialog! Also great for sound effects recording, just better on louder sounds than quiet ones.

    Alex - Love the channel - My channel is all about fireworks and with July 4th coming up - would love if you did a video about how to record fireworks.. It's a bit hard to do TOO much since i'm also setting up the fireworks show and lighting it all. Currently using a Canon 90D and a Canon 6D Mk II - one with a Deity D3Pro - love the tunable gain control on it... and one with the Deity D4 Duo. I usually also have a GoPro pointing at the fireworks launching site with an inexpensive Movo mic ...

    If you haven’t tried, the mkh8060 blends really well with the 8040 and it’s not much pricier than a 416. It doesn’t have quite the same frequency response, but (to my ears) it sounds less coloured and has significantly better self noise. Also, I have had great results recording a 12 gauge shotgun at around 3ft from the muzzle so max SPL isn’t an issue. Btw your content is great! I wish you had your channel when I started working in post.

    • @axk
      @axk  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you!! The 8060 is an awesome mic, love it paired with the rest of the 8000 series. I wish I had video of one of the big gun recordings I did a while back, went through 30+ firearms in a day. Didn’t have time to shoot any video! 20+ mics used for each gun.

    Man I have a big question, I’m upgrading my audio gear and I bought an mke 600, an h2n, some lavaliers, an iPhone 12 and an an utopia 404 which I already had. Sounds dumb but I have ended my budget. At this point the question is: as a recorder, how good an iPhone can be compared to a cheap recorder, compared to an audio interface. Might be a good topic for a video too!
    PS: Your videos has always been super useful, thanx!

    Crazy late to this, but I have the S-Mic2 but am realizing it’s not as great for indoor dialogue (for my use at least) than I’m feeling great about. Thoughts on upgrading? Something like the MKH 50? Or something maybe less expensive…?

    • @axk
      @axk  Рік тому +1

      Try a less directional pickup pattern like a supercardioid or even a standard cardioid mic. Many indoor spaces make shotgun patterns sound like reverb is being concentrated.

    what about a rode nt1(not nt1a) instead of both of them? 10dB less self noise, and really more capable of picking up low frequencies. also in the same price range of deity

      It’s a little harder to get large capsule mics out in the field, but those are definitely worth trying out. Might have to grab a pair and head into the desert soon 🏜

    Hi there! Thank you for your videos, I make corporate videos and I would like to improve my sound, I already have Rode VideoMicro, Wireless Go and Lav Go. I would like to buy all around mic for 200$ (dialog, foley and ambient sound). I have a doubt between these ones Audio Technica at875r, Oktava MK-012 or Lewitt LCT 040, conected to Zoom h5. I choose this recorder because of removable capsules for ambient.

    Hey Alex, i have a little off topic question 😅but im new to that whole sound recording thing, only scratched the surface all the time. So now i want to invest into a proper recording setup and i got the opportunity to get the Sennheiser MKH416 T used for around 400€ (=480$ - 16.01.2021) instead of 1000€ new? Is it built sturdy enough so I can safely buy it without risking anything? best regards, Stephan :)

    • @axk
      @axk  3 роки тому

      Probably sturdy enough but it uses T-power instead of Phantom power and will require an adapter to be compatible with modern preamps. Best to do a little research on that to make it worthwhile! Honestly the Deity is pretty solid if it’s available in your country, might be worth buying one new if you can.

    • @20steven10ja
      @20steven10ja 3 роки тому +1

      @@axk that helped me a lot. I was wondering about the "T". I think I'll do some more researched and might reconsider. The MKE600 or even the deity is also great. Thank you a lot, greeting from Austria!

    I have a very deep voice with a lot of rumble to it and am currently using an SM7B and no matter what I do my vocals sound muddy as a result of the natural bass in my voice. Getting it to a point of just sounding like I'm just speaking to someone naturally eludes me to no end. Is this microphone or any microphone ideal for strictly dialogue with a very bassy voice?

    • @jefparker
      @jefparker 3 роки тому +2

      In my experience, the SM7b sounds great on really high or thin voices (Micheal Jackson, Frankie Valli, etc.). It adds bottom where there was little to none. But if your voice is already deep and rich, the SM7b is probably not the mic for you. Maybe try something like a Lewitt LCT 540 Subzero? Might be a better match.

      @@axk I'm a fan aswell, I have the MP6 (gen1) I want to upgrade and can't decide between a MP10 II or a used 633.

    • @axk
      @axk  3 роки тому

      @@Mac1Sound I do absolutely love both. The 633 will give you a more professional user experience, but the MixPre 10 II has 32-bit floating point if that's important to you. Also depends on how many channels you need, of course. But you really can't go wrong with either. That being said...the MixPre is brand new and the 633 is no longer in production, so you might have a longer lifespan out of the 10 II.

    I like what you're doing but the term "cinematic sound" Really? That's a contradiction in terms. Come on, you know your stuff, just keep it 100%.
