Marlon and Andrew return on this episode of Sound 101 to show you how to get better interview audio and more specifically, how to mic up 2 people with booms and lavs. We cover everything from how to position the boom pole to make sure you have isolated tracks with no cross-talk (prevent audio bleed) to how to hide a lav behind a button!
Even though the results are pro, this is an affordable interview setup. We show you how to use a D3 Pro on a boom with the HD-TX. We also explain how microphone pickup patterns can work in your favor if you position your mics correctly and use the off-axis rejection to isolate your tracks.

What are some lav hacks you've used in the past?
On a drama shoot, I had an actor who had no duologue until after he put his jacket on, his outfit was a becoming a pain to mic up and I took me a long time to realise I can mic up the jacket carefully before he puts it on. It ended up working super well and we had good audio once he had settled with it on.
Not an uncommon technique but I often find that if it's not feasible to mic a character up, such as when working with young children, difficult costumes or within tight time constraints. Placing a mic on a character opposite the actor with dialogue, in such a way that it is able to capture both actors can actually sound almost as good as if the mic was directly on the actor.
I just let it all hangout! I like to work very Brecht-ian. You're not fooling anyone, they know what their watching.
Deity Microphones I lav’d up a bride and groom and caught a precious interaction after they walked down the aisle, “what do we do from here, we didn’t rehearse this far, wanna get out of here?” “Steven we’re marrrieddd”. I hid the mic on the dress for the bride, and in the collar for the groom. So helpful to watch your other video on hiding lavs!
One that I have done recently is using gaffer tape and taping the lav to the underside of a baseball hat bill to hide it and it gave a great signal for me to use.

I know this doesn’t have as much to do with capturing the audio but I’d love to see a tutorial on some basic post mixing that you should do to all your audio. Like removing noise, how to use compression correctly, normalizing, etc. I have stuff I do but I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly!
Over 20 years I do TV and video. Doing audio still is the hardest thing. Great videos you got! I learned a lot!

It would be great to see some tips and recommendations for working in situations where you have to move quickly and adapt to a variety of different environments, such as interviews or coverage at events. Things like how to keep gear light and easy to carry whilst having the right kit to adapt to unforeseen scenarios and how to get levels and framelines quickly without holding up the camera. This was absolutely stellar
In documentary shoots for me its important to have as much stuff on a shoot possible, because you”ll never know whats gonna happened, what type of clothing your talent would wear on, and, in some cases, when i hide a mic on talent, i just cant avoid some of clothing rustle, thats where boom mic comes in handy. In some cases, even when clothing doesnt make any noises, indoor boom mic can sound more brighter, more clear and more natural, so this video actually show that lav mic is not a only solution for interview, always remember - you only got one take - and thats it, so you wanna make shure that if something happenes to your wireless system during the shoot - you always got a nice, clean, wired boom signal thats gonna save you. Great videos, guys, love your stuff btw.

How can I prevent radio interference between two different brands of 2.4GHz transmitters? In my Case, i have a Deity System and a Rode Filmmaker Kit. Other Point: I have noticed on my last short film that the Deity System causes interfering effects in my Zoom f4. What could be the reason for this?

Double-dippin on the set? Smart. Dead battery trick. Nice! Boom sounds better of course. Can we have a lapel that sounds as good as the boom mic? You know, I'm not asking much. Just take a really good boom mic, like the S-Mic 2s, apply a shrink ray, and don't lose any of the dynamics. And WHAT??? Giving away the whole connect kit??? I have one, and WOW! Someone is going to be a happy camper! :)
I study at a cinema school in brazil and you show here how important the sound department is on the final quality of a movie. When people think about cinema, the straight thinking is about cinematography and the actors. I'm happy that Deity has this initiative to introduce the technics of a good audio in a movie.
I would love to watch a video about setting up audio on sport scenes, like running, climbing, swimming...!! Sometimes the frame is too open and the boom doesn't make it. So, what we should do?

I would love to see a video breaking down the hardware differences between entry-level, pro-sumer, and pro-level microphones. Crack open a d3 pro, an s-mic 2, and maybe a fancy Schoeps or something and talk about the hardware differences, and how you guys are able to offer that level of quality at such a good price. I’m trying to decide between the d3 pro and s-mic 2s at the moment and I’d love to know more about the nitty-gritty component differences.
I’m also eyeing a lav setup, so the same thing for the lav lineup would be awesome. Thanks!

Great job on the video, concise and easy to follow with excellent advice. Perhaps make a video on where the Sound Mixer would position themselves on set physically as this interview happens. For example they need to be on set close enough to make any quick changes if lighting changes need to happen. They need to be able to see the cameras and the director, and how would the sound mixer communicate to the producer that the frequency had interference or the talent squashed their Lav mic when they touched their chest. I would love to see a video where you explain when and how to use timecode in different situations like short films or corporative videos, from choosing the correct cable for the recorder/camera to adjusting FPS. Awesome video! It would be amazing if you guys talked about deliverables (most used file naming protocol). There are so many things to keep in mind when delivering audio. You can also add the most commonly used platforms for delivering big or small audio files. I think organization extremely important. Explain the different kind of file formats used + everything that you can think of that has to deal with deliverables and file management.

Just discovering this August of 2020, and I love the presentation and production of this educational video. It’s concise and easily digestible. What I would like to learn next is: how to do this kind of audio setup in our current pandemic protocols and guidelines? What nuances or obvious treatments and precautions should we be aware of when mic-ing up talent nowadays to ensure the safety and comfortability of our talent and ourselves?
I would love to see you guys make a video on how to mix audio properly in post. For example how you said often times you would mix both the lav and boom mics together. That would be pretty cool!

Great Video! I recently purchased a Diety Duo to add to my inventory of mics. Your video helps me to better understand how to best utilized one and two person setups. However since you asked I would also like to see and application with a pod device like the Pod Trak 4
Could you make a video about the best full audio setup for your money and why each item is important and what the use for each item is? Or - could you make a video make a video about how to make your own wireless body pack system or the best budget wireless body pack system if it’s too hard to really make your own. Also, I was recently re-watching your boom pole buyers guide and saw that you mentioned a video about how to internally wire a non-internally wired boom pole but when I searched for this video, I could not find it. I would love to see a video on lav micing talent in a scene where there is a lot of movement, (fast walking, erratic movement and possibly even running) also in different outfits/ materials. It would also be great to hear what each of the mic positions sound like whilst on the move, even techniques that aren't as good as others would be interesting to hear and compare.
Of course I'd also love a Connect interview kit! ;)

I really like these videos you are doing. Great work! What I would like to see more is the type of "artist's secret tips" videos. Like the one, you have made in the past about Foley artist job. You actually doing and the professional guys teaching how to make good footsteps, cloth sounds, stab sounds or whatever. It is so valuable to see what those professionals use and what are their input on it. But I am sure they are as well interested to see novice people trying out the art and even bringing fresh ideas on the table in some instances.
These types of videos could be spread even wider like tips from foley, soundtrack, mixers, DJs and other professionals.
I love the content you guys dish out. What is an inexpensive way to do an interview? Best audio under $200
Next video please how best to set low and hi pass filter. If you could include best practice to eliminate unwanted noise such as handling, room reverb, traffic etc that would be much appreciated. Your series is great I have learned so much. Thanks Richard

Awesome video as always, Only downside to the content you upload, is the Murphy's law concerning the fact that I always see them after they would have been useful LOL.
My question is: How would you approach a changing frame line situation(like a fast paced documentary, or dynamic narrative where the director is looking for an "authentic" occurrence that you could not plan ahead for) and how would you estimate the frame line without having "BOOM" screamed at you, while working in an ENG setup?
Hey Andrew, love the series and am learning a lot. One thing I would like is a good explanation of "boom" in terms the people lump shotgun all together, when booming a shotgun mic can mean so much since the boom shotgun mic could be used for outside and that mic needs a wider pickup then booming a shotgun mike indoors for an interview. What I see as confusion is taking the pickup patterns (cardioid, super cardioid, omni), and lumping them all into "shotgun mike". Which then leads to the statement than many reviewers like to say as "xxx is the best shotgun mike for general purposes" ... I am confused just trying to write the question.

This is one of the best videos I have watched for audio setup for a two person interview using a 3 camera setup. Thanks for this free course. Also, just the mention of ISO recording while it seems obvious to do, honestly I have seen people skip that 1 step and regret it latter. Taking the time to get great audio is important. I really appreciate the comments about making sure that the talent is comfortable. Letting people know what you are doing and why is smart. I have seen people let the talent mic themselves, they are not professionals and have know idea about placement and the tricks like the mic bullet or the battery hack. This is an amazing video and I will subscribe and look for more of your content and share with others I know. Also, are you still doing the giveaway? I am just watching this one and it is a year old but you didn’t mention a time limit, only the best comment. 😀

My newest go to are hair mics. They work especially well in a car if the talent is turning their head looking out windows left and right. Also work especially well on Found Footage style filming.

I think the lavalier audio was actually better than the boom mic. Both of them were great, though. Curious to hear if you guys also think the lavalier was better.
I’d love to see more content for filmmakers that can’t still afford all those cool devices... I was watering as I watched all that gear. I was saying to myself I need all of that... But at the same time, I realize I need to start slow and build and increase in gear as I go.
That said, another question is... what is the best and most versatile Deity gear to have if you are just starting?

Great Video.! What about a video on simple methods to more seamlessly cut together audio from Deity's different mics or even the same one from different locations... with the emphasis on "SIMPLE" ? I see a lot of indie content these days that does a great job matching the look of different shots and transitioning creatively between them.... but they often really seem to struggle with doing the same for their audio. Again, love what you guys are doing.

I would like to see more on run and gun sound for Documentaries/short films i am making a documentary but I don’t have the right sound gear for it is there a DIY Solution or what should I have maybe do a unboxing/review on your interview Kit
I would love to know what your best practice is for dealing with latency on wireless. My recorder has built in time code, but obviously if I'm recording both a wired boom and audio from my Deity Connect Lav the sound will be out of sync. Is there an automated way of dealing with this? Maybe I just need the interview kit so my boom can be wireless and have the same latency as well. Great content and great products guys!
