    Magician reacts to Shawn Farquhar 2020 performing a hybrid book mentalism & card magic trick for Alyson and Penn and Teller on their show Penn & Teller Fool Us 2020. Shawn is a World Champion of card magic, and in this episode he demonstrates an impossible card trick, quite like his previous tricks... with an object impossibly appearing inside a brand new, sealed deck of cards. Shawn Farquhar season 7 of Fool Us shares a very entertaining act... and I still can't figure out how he managed Alyson's selection at the beginning of the magic trick! Shawn Farquhar has previously fooled Penn & Teller twice and won the Fooler trophy. This video shows the reaction of someone familiar with magic so you can see how someone in this field feels about the performance! This is Fool Us Season 7 2020.

    I'm really happy I'm sitting here rather than Penn and Teller's position. There were so many things happening and so many jokes cracked that I cannot even process what's happening let alone to guess how he does it. And Penn and Teller get only one chance to look at it the same way any other viewer would see. And they still got it right! Respect to both of them!
    By the way, my take on the Aesop's fable is that, the frogs need the sun for their survival. But they're not aware of it. They only see that the sun dries up their mud and complain about it. No matter what good you do to your society, someone will see something bad in you and will complain.
    Thank you Jason for the video. Keep them coming!

    "Right in the pocket" would be another code word. And I think we all have a general idea of how he does it, but does that really matter? Like anyone can learn a trick, but it's the skill with which you perform it that matters. And this guy's got skill. That's what I find impressive about magic, that even if you know what's going on the magician has such a high level of skill that you still can't see it.

  • @d_e_a_n
    @d_e_a_n 4 роки тому +19

    It’s a classic idea to keep the top card (force card) or in this case a few cards, including 8 and 5 on the top while doing a riffle shuffle.
    She then starts dealing and after those 3 are dealt he then says she can do bunches of cards or whatever. He spreads the cards as if to show how cards are normally selected and retains a break at the bottom 3 cards. He really just has to do a pass or even just shift those cards to top as squaring.

    • @JasonParkerMagic
      @JasonParkerMagic  4 роки тому +5

      hmmmm wow! Well described. I think that might be the closest description to how he did it. In fact, after clicking publishing I went and watched that section again super slowly... and RIGHT BEFORE it cuts to another angle... you see Shawn getting fingers into position under the spread... probably exactly like you said in preparation for a pass. HMMM. I wish the camera would have given us a full view of this moment though. There are just a few frames where I could see it starting to happen....

    I believe the first two farro shuffles brought the jack the 8 and the 5 to the top of the deck. As Allison counted they were now at the bottom of the pile in his hand. When he spread the cards he did executed a pass allowing the cards he needed to be at the top. The rest is just fancy fast switching. That being said I still have no idea how he forced the card Penn took the first time around

      from 3:40-3:45. palm of his hand is over his lapel, he "motivates' touching his chest by saying "you have cards and "I have cards." making the unnatural move of bringing his palm to his chest seem "natural"

    • @helderboymh
      @helderboymh 4 роки тому

      If you play his hand going from his chest down to the stack in slow motion(0.25%) you won't see him having palmed card there and even his fingers are quite far a part at one point.
      I watched it multiple times, this would have to be the sickest palm ever especially considering he somehow got them from his chest wich doesn't seem like a palm that would allow you to set them up so precisely.

    • @DVineMe
      @DVineMe 4 роки тому

      @@helderboymh Indeed, well you can't see if he's palming anything or not, but his hand goes fairly straight before he even touches the deck.
      Nevertheless this is one of the best magicians in the world. So I honestly wouldn't put it past him lol. Also it is a well known spot to have a hidden pocket, so...
      Still, could all be misdirection. In the end all we know is that he forced the cards in some way, and no matter how he did it it was done perfectly.

    At 3.32 when he handover the deck to Alison, the jack of diamond is already on the top of the deck. When Alison deals back cards, the Jack of diamond goes to the bottom of the deck on Shawn's hand. Then he cleverly forces it to the top of the deck.

  • @OL-yd8ee
    @OL-yd8ee 4 роки тому

    @jason, I think the hint from teller is "fast and furious and clean and that maybe we'd forget stuff," regarding the force. If you look at what happens when he has alison putting the cards in his hand, the first few cards she puts down are just whatever was on top when Shawn handed her the deck. (fast and furious meaning the reason it works is Alison puts enough cards down to complete the trick before she starts messing with the deck, and forget stuff about not recognizing she already places enough cards before she did so). At which point any manipulation that puts those three cards on the top completes the force. (the clean reference). Could even have made it easier by picking an order that sequenced 5-8-J as the top three when handed to alison so that when reversed in his hand (from Alison placing them one at a time) they are already in J-8-5 order and it's simply a matter of lifting them to the top of the deck while his hand covers it.
    Unless you saw more in the palm movements than I did that made it impossible for him to have manipulated them that way (I know you said you didn't see him /add/ new cards, but that would have different indicators I think)

    Jason, I think you saw the interesting thing that I saw in the 2 shuffles, based on your look at the camera at 3:33 minutes. I was lucky enough to also catch the important sectioning out of the 2 bottom cards immediately after, just before a camera angle change prevented us from clearly seeing the control to the top of the deck (my assumption, but it just has to be correct). That is why it didn't matter how Allison shuffled the cards after dealing out the first 2 (probably reversed order). I completely agree with you on your assessment that 85 had to be predetermined.

    I guess he controls the three cards to the top of the deck when he runs through the deck to show the new deck order. During the faro shuffle he merges below those cards. Alyson deals the cards one after the other onto his hand, he only tells her to do groups etc. after the initial three cards are dealt. Then he controls the cards to the top like others already mentioned at 3:40.
    For the book: There seems to be a second page 85, to which he opens it for Alyson. Looking closely at 5:47 and 7:14, you can see the page comes after the middle at first, but when Alyson opens it, page 84/85 comes before the middle of the book.
    I didn't see the deck switch, but the camera isn't on him when the deck switches from his right to his left hand at 5:56
    The flap most likely refers to a flap which he holds onto the sealed deck, so it looks like an opened deck when Alyson signs it. At 6:06 you can see the addded flap not being flat on the deck at its edge
    Not sure if I'm right, it's just my best guess.
    (I haven't gone through all other comments, so maybe all of that had already been mentioned)

    • @MarkusFriedel83
      @MarkusFriedel83 4 роки тому

      Just realized he never runs through the deck up to the 8 of hearts at the beginning, in order to control that card to the top. But as he doesn't show the deck up to the 8 of hearts, this one could have been on top of the deck (below the ad cards) in the sealed deck.

And at 4:30, when he needs a "random number", he says "and a 5", even before looking at this card (so he knew, it was a five!). Too quickly said ;)

    Penn also said "mythical flying horses," but a unicorn deck is just a design, not an effect, right?
    He also said "pocket," which, I assume refers to the deck and *possible* book switch.
    He knew Allison would deal the cards one by one at first, so, perhaps after the faro shuffles, (I think mentioning "learning" from Penn about perfect shuffles was verbal misdirection that he was, maybe doing faros that were perfect *for him*) he knew those 3 cards would be first and somehow controlled those 3 to the top. • @bilskro
    @bilskro 4 роки тому +1

    My take, seems like a reasonable straight forward force. Due to cameraman it is impossible to be sure, but I don’t think he palmed the cards and placed them on top even though he put his hand up to his vest.
    First he shows the deck of cards starting at the bottom saying they are in new deck order (call me suspicious). He starts showing the spades, then the diamonds, then clubs and then rushes through the rest of the deck so he never shows what cards are actual on top, which I think is where the J, 5 and 8 laid in wait.
    So when the deck is turned over, those 3 cards are on top of the deck and he does a few shuffles never messing up the top 3 cards. Then Alison deals those top 3 cards to him and now they are on the bottom of his hands and only after that point does he tells Alison she can pull cards from anywhere. Then the useless POS cameramen decides instead of showing us the deck of the cards we would want to see the back of Faruhar’s suit; butut if you look at 3:47 right after he spreads the cards out and look at his fingers position you can see he is separating those 3 cards at that point. I think somewhere when we are looking at his back he moves the bottom 3 cards to the top of the deck (I wonder if the cameraman is paid off or incompetent).
    Now there is so much going on with this trick it is hard to even follow all of it. For the deck switch he had all the time in the world to swap the deck and the trick was as Penn said the “FLAP”. I think the sealed deck had the fake flap which he then removed at 6.37 leaving a sealed deck.
    It was hard to see the book swap as once again the cameraman shows what he wants to show, but he had all the time in the world to swap the book and Penn mentioned pocket. So I am not 100% sure if book swap or just a book with some gimmick. I will have to research the Pegasus Page.
    You did not do a video on Ondrej, that fooled Penn and Teller. I must be missing something or maybe there was something there more complicated. Penn checked the cards and they were not fake that could only leave me with one conclusion. They acted like she pulled the Ace of Spades and then she picked the
    mouth to feed the bug into. She fed the bug into a mouth and then he played a video clip. I would guess he had a Video clip ready no matter what Mouth she chooses. Any other opinions?
    Also you did not mention Gertner. One bad break for Gertner was that Penn picked 47, so there would have only been 5 more cards remaining and there were clearly
    more than 5 cards remaining which is why he quickly straightened up the deck. But I am going to ignore that fact, as I am interested in the pen. He did not give the Pen to Penn until after Teller picked the pick and Pen choice his number. Penn kept saying the word force again and again. My question did he force the pick or
    not. Because if Teller had free choice of the picks that means Gertner had a hell of lot of pens in his coat. At a minimum he had to have 52. I am curious how he had all those pens organized so he could quick and easy pick it out. As for the card pick as Penn kept saying rough and smooth again and again.

      Say he knows the jack of diamonds is the first card before she deals them down. When he's saying you could just spread the cards out like that and pick it, but you get the top card. As he spreads the cards he might be moving the bottom card to the top of the deck, which if JoD was the first card dealt down that card would be JoD. I feel this must be close to how the jack is forced. Probably not exactly right. In 2 new deck order faro shuffles, apparently jack of diamonds is the 10th card. Which he would know he'd have before he said she could stop. He even flashes something when he spread the cards he had.
