This light stand is kinda not sturdy enough because the light and soft box are so large; the whole thing can tip over easily. But it's what I use! 😆 Or you can perhaps find another light stand that is rated to hold more weight. Or just put something heavy (like sandbags) onto the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

this I am almost positive is a gamblers trick, he tucked their cards then did a basic version of a false deal, pulling their cards out at the right number of counted cards.
[edit] also first trick it is a special box that would in someway trigger another device most likely in his shoe that would signal which ball he picked up. so all he had to do is remember the order of colours as they were removed from the box.
moral of the story... dont trust someone that has anything to gain from you being a fool.

This gentleman is a real discovery and most entertaining. His act _appears_ simple (l am sure its a math trick) but to make it look smooth and simple can be quite difficult l imagine 🤔
I have seen this exact trick on mismag88's channel 8 years ago.

It's a really smart method and you might have a look just to tease your brain a little bit.

I know how that trick is done and then first shuffle at the beginning relies on a completely perfect riffle haha thats ballsy
From having been to a taping of Fool Us about three years ago I can confirm that, at least during the taping I was at, Penn and Teller did have more time to discuss the possibilities between each other longer than it appears in the edited/ televised episode, not a great deal longer; but, perhaps 2-3 times longer than it appears. Which seemed fair. If you’re in Vegas I would encourage you to attend one of the tapings, especially given the fact they’re free to attend just via signing up online. I believe the tapings are on Sunday afternoons and I was able to get a ticket by signing up on like the Wednesday before the Sunday taping.
I love watching your videos. As a person interested in magic, but without any skills myself, I enjoy watching magicians and attempting to figure it out. It feels gratifying when I’m fooled, and even better when you are fooled as well. Keep up the fun work! And Aesop lol

Did you notice that he fumbles slightly on each of the card counts. Could that be masking a move? He’s incredible with the cards so the fumbles seem artificial.
Maybe, but how would he know which cards they chose?
The fumbles are for entertainment I think. Or nervousness.
The trick doesn't need any special moves at that point.
The only important moves are how the cuts are put together initially and how the cuts are put together after removing the jokers.
Ohhhh, so you think he counted how many cards away the cuts were from the jokers..??
@@LachimusPrime He didn't have to count. The way the cards were put together both times is all that is needed. The trick is simply mathematics and the humans inability to see patterns this big.

There is so much to learn. The ball prediction is a 1950s trick by Al Koran mentospheres.
British humor (humour) works by often being seriously understated :-) (As a Brit one can learn but it helps to live there). He is hilarious. Love his "banter." But producing Jokers blank-backed at first, THEN with numbers on the back...that was amazing.
I actually knew that trick and its impossible to mess up - pure maths.
i used to like it when Teller would write down the possible method, show the magician and then set fire to the paper.
I learnt this trick on mismag UA-cam channel quite a while ago...its really cool
this was a great trick I had learned years ago, that was a false shuffle and there is no force, but it is a mathematical algorithm and the deck is definitely preset, which he proves with the numbers on the cards, it's more mysterious if you don't do that...keep up the great videos Jason!

Snooker is very popular in UK, and yes it has very different rules from billiard.
Made popular by UK army soldiers.
It's a much larger table and the colours are more important than in billiards.
Snooker *is* billiard. Billiard is a generic term for all cue sports, including snooker, pool, carom and several others.

@@mikeonthebox i recently view an explanation for Penns hate. Penn said that when Kostya was announced, Teller said to him "we're screwed". Penn said on his podcast that he knows 20 variants, Teller knows 20 more, and they didn't catch the movement. P&T did a variant of the same trick a few days before on tv, promoting the show; and Kostya did the same trick with Penn burning his hands; Penn knew in the middle of the trick that Kostya did the special movement and he didn't catch it.
I got addicted to snooker when I lived in Europe and I’m an absolute fanatic for the game. (Watching it, not playing it.) It’s like chess and pool mixed into one. Of course, I also like watching backgammon matches on UA-cam...
I didn't know how to black backgammon most of my life.... and a friend taught me 2 years ago for the first time.... surprisingly fun game!
I was actually more fooled by the first ball effect. At first I thought I would know-- but because he told Jonathan where to put each ball even before the balls left the box-- I am not sure how he'd get any "feedback" on which pocket to have him put the ball/s in. If he had waited until after Jonathan picked up each ball then the answer would be pretty apparent--. .-- but he actually told him which pocket before the ball left the case?? Keep up the great work Jason-- most entertaining channel on UA-cam!!!!
This is truly one of the best effects I’ve seen. Period. Two banks (one K, one 5, spades) was the only thing I could think of, since a force seemed necessary, but impossible in the circumstances. And I kept wondering why P&T didn’t examine the deck while deliberating. Then, finally they did and... wow. Just wow.
Blue got me. I LOVE IT!!!
(1) He had P&T put their piles back in the opposite order.
(2) The jokers were already in the deck with the numbers printed on them.
(3) We didn't see the order in which he put the piles back together after extracting the jokers (as you noted).
Given all of that, I figured there was some kind of math-based control going on... and after crunching the numbers/variables a bit, I figured out how to exactly replicate what he did -- without ANY trickery or fancy manipulation whatsoever.
First, you put the joker with the "43" on it between the 9th and 10th cards in the deck, and put the joker with the "18" on it between the 27th and 28th cards. That's all the setup you need (so he must have been doing false shuffles at the start, as you suggested).
Now, you have spectator #1 take the top third (which will undoubtedly include the first joker, but not the second) and memorize the bottom card. Spectator #2 then takes half of the rest (since the second joker is just past the halfway point of the original deck, that should be part of what they grab) and memorize the bottom card. The two stacks then go back on the deck in reverse order.
Next, you fan out the deck and find the jokers, splitting the deck into three parts: Top, Middle, and Bottom. When you reassemble the deck, switch the Middle and Bottom parts. Now, spectator #1's card will be at position #18 and spectator #2's card will be at position #43, exactly as the jokers "predict". It's completely self-working if you set it up right.
I figured it would be a bit much to post how the mathematics of it work, though...

I am not a magician. I have coordination issues, so I could never even learn how to shuffle the cards, leave alone doing any slight of hand. But I love close-up magic. I "stumbled" onto your channel while I am cooped up at home. I just love your commentary. It's like watching a magic performance with a friend. Thank you :-)
This is one of the few magic tricks I can perform. It’s about pre deck arrangement and math. Nothing else.
I figured it had to be a force somehow with the prediction at the end. That was great.
6:03 the ‘put on women’s clothing’ joke is a reference to the famous Lumberjack song from Monty Python. It’s an inside joke that a British audience easily gets, I guess.

Silver iodide paper (photographic paper) under the balls - the duration between ball removal leaves a shaded strip dark to light in the sequence.
The box was immediately flipped to preserve the shading and prevent further exposure.
Moral "Keep to your trade."

Ok I have 2 ways maybe he did it but both run into a near impossible part. 1) The Jokers position in the deck at the end told him where the other cards were. Because he had Penn pick first and place back first the card between Penn's stack and Tellers is the top card and he could know it or a Joker was placed near the top. The problem is the markings of 18 and 43 on the Jokers. So he could know where they are but getting the numbers on the Jokers blows my mind.
2) Because he could differently know Teller's card because it was with the top card he could find a way to collect it. Penn's card is much harder but given the position of the Jokers he could know and find a way to collect it. When he dealt them back he would just give them the card at the count he wanted so the numbers on the Jokers didn't matter. The problem with this is I can't imagen Penn or Teller not seeing him collect the cards or bottom deal it. Now I did see a comment on here talk about him fumble with the cards so that is when he placed them. Still, he would have to very VERY good to be able to collect them and put them where he wanted them without Penn or Teller seeing him.
About the ball trick. I did notice that when he would say the color of the ball the helper guy would move towards the pocket it was in. Hell, half the time he was reaching in the pocket before Graham said the pocket. This is a well know thing that people do when they are asked about something.
The trick is called Whispering Jokers or Prior Commitment.
The cards of Penn and Teller always would end up in 18th and 43rd place. It is just mathematics and carefully chosen but still random cuts.
I think you're on to something with the gimmicked box: my guess is it has some kind of foam which expanded over time that the balls rested on, one look at the empty box and you could tell what order the balls were selected in

I always remember this one.. to this day i still have no idea what he did.. you're right about the host snapping at their heels (so to speak) however..I'd argue penn and teller don't need time after the fact to figure it out..i think and i beleive that the deliberation period should be short.. the real magic happens during performance and thus should they be dumbfounded during said performance...then job done..effect successful 😁
Each ball was removed in order and he told him which pocket to put it in. If Johnathan had put the ball in a different pocket than the one instructed then it would have been impressive.
Jason, first off; I had never seen this video before. I thought I had seen all of them, many of them I’ve seen several times. If it wasn’t for the two cuts, I would say that there was a force involved. I don’t think for a minute that either jokers spoke to him, but seeing the numbers written on the back in permanent marker, that there does prove that a force was involved. I just don’t understand how. I think that the placement of the two jokers, did somehow identify Penn’s card along with Teller card. A head scratcher!

I wonder if something important was cut from the video, because it didn't look like the deck was shuffled or cut after Penn and Teller put their cards back because since Penn put it back first, I would expect Penn's card to be deeper in the pack then Teller's. But Penn's card was 18 and Teller's was 43...

First thing I noticed is this - Penn puts his cards down, and then Teller's go on top of those. However, Penn's number was 18 and Teller's was 43. Since Penns were below Teller's, there's no way that his number could be actually lower than Tellers. So Jolley must have done something when bringing the piles together - maybe something like a little salt on top to keep a break, control the cards to the bottom, and then just count out the 18 and 43 and do a bottom deal on both of those to get the cards.
No manipulation of the specific cards. It's a mathematics trick.
It's called Prior Commitment or Whispering Jokers.
I am surprised Jason that you didn't notice that Penn put his 3rd first, so his card should not be on a spot "above" (18 compare to 43) Teller's card :)

Jason, not a magician, but I believe I know how he did it. Its all about those Jokers and where they were when the trick began (Not much of a cut at the beginning)! Of course there is an "Order" to follow when placing the cards back together and a Vegas No-No when playing blackjack. Your right, not much time for P&T to think on it.
He was honest about the method of the second trick - it is indeed the jokers that tell him where their cards are... You caught one important detail without realizing, as it was not yet anything suggesting that it had importance. The second one was not in the camera frame. I once prepped my playing card deck for this trick before a game night with my friends (using slightly different numbers). I'm not skilled at that kind of shuffle, but relied on my friends' lack of attention to what was going on at the start. They seemed pretty amazed.

Time and time again I come back to Graham Jolley's wonderful performance - what an absolute pro he is! And I'm always amazed that experienced magicians don't recognise this trick - I think Graham's banter and style just has us laughing so much that we can't think! I for one enjoyed his witty approach so much that I stopped trying to work it out and just wanted him to win a trophy!

My guess is that he got them to choose from a loaded deck (only King and 5 of spades). Then while doing his comedy and twirling the deck, he switched it for a stacked deck where the King and 5 were already in the correct order. The original deck of kings and 5s remained in his pocket while the final deck was examined. The camera switching make it difficult or impossible to see the transition.
Numbers 9 and 18 are really important in this trick, specially number 9 ;-)
Here's my theory. He handled the deck before and after Penn placed his cards in so was able to place the jokers in to mark where the cards were - it was very hard to see him do this in the video but maybe he's just very good at that sleight. He prepicked the two numbers to approximate 1/3 and 2/3 way through the deck and counted on Penn and Teller to follow his instructions fairly well when choosing their cuts. Then when he spread the cards out he quickly counted the difference between the two marker points and where the chosen cards are which was probably just a few cards. Then he adjusted the cards by taking the from the surplus side and shifting them to the other side very quickly when he pushed the cards back together after pulling the jokers out. Or alternatively (but I don't think likely) he false dealt to make the adjustment.

Yep I'm alright! Just things have been busy! Talented and funny! A simple buzzer for the snooker effect. He told him where to put the balls. Yes, the initial "shuffle" was pretty obvious. Baffled though. 🤔

I'm not a magician.. but isn't it just as simple as he put the jokers down as markers to show him where Penn and Teller had put the cards... and then having put their cards right next to those jokers in those predetermined positions he just pretended to work out it was the 18th and 43rd position... but he knew that because that's where he placed the jokers beforehand and he was always going to put their cards next to them.... that's why there were 18 cards in the middle and I would imagine 25 cards before the first joker... (18+25 =43)... it's just good handling of a deck of cards but I would say it was really obvious what he had done. I agree Penn and Teller were hurried a bit, but I am surprised they didn't spot that! Maybe they are never fooled and just pretend to be to make better tv.
There is definitely something cut out. When Penn and Teller returned their cards, Teller’s was above Penn’s in the deck so the order got changed and I assume he did something visibly that would do that or Penn and Teller would have caught something going on. Presumably either he shuffled the deck or reassembled it in the different order.
Other thing I noticed, he was differing his end of the deck when he made the joke about trying to misdirect Teller, could he have been checking which cards were chosen by the deck being out of order?
Its funny because of Monty Python and I believe Jonathon Ross once did the Lumberjack song with Python.
So where exactly would you obtain one of those specialty boxes that registers when an object is removed?
Not sure... there are so many sources for buying magic products... old and new.... it's a maze out there! Only my speculation for how it could work. When I was a child I had a cheap motion detector device, and you could put it in a drawer. When the drawer was opened it would make a noise. I imagine the same principle could be applied here... except mine was technology from 30 years ago.
