How to make diri ak djondjon| Haitian black rice with maggi

    #Diri ak djondjon ("jhon jhon") mushroom black rice. #Djondjon mushrooms are grown in the northern part of Haiti and sold dried. This type of fungus is mostly used to cook rice, and only the water is used after soaking or boiling, hence the color of the rice. The #mushrooms are discarded after but some people incorporates it in their meals so that nothing gets wasted.
    #INGREDIENTS
    ▪️2 Cups of Dried Black Mushrooms (djon djon)
    ▪️3 garlic cloves minced
    ▪️2 tablespoons olive oil
    ▪️1 small onion chopped
    ▪️2 cups long-grain rice 🍚
    ▪️2 teaspoons salt 🧂
    ▪️1 tsp Ground cloves
    ▪️1 (12-ounce) can lima beans , (sweet or green peas)
    ▪️1 to 2 thyme sprigs
    ▪️1 green Scotch bonnet pepper
    #METHOD
    Step 1
    In small pot, soak mushrooms in 4 cups water for 10 minutes.
    Step 2
    Boil mushrooms on low heat for 10 minutes.
    Step 3
    Strain the mushroom water into another container for later use. The mushrooms in the strainer will no longer needed.
    Step 4
    In a large pot, sauté the garlic and onions on medium heat for 2 minutes.
    Step 5
    Add the rice and stir for 3-5 min.
    Step 6
    Next, add the mushroom water, salt, cloves and lima beans.
    Step 7
    Bring the water to a boil and reduce the hear when most of the water evaporates (approximately 10-15 min).
    Step 8
    Stir the rice, set the temperature to low.
    Step 9
    Add Scotch bonnet pepper and thyme.
    Step 10
    Cover the pot and steam the rice for 15 min.

    My Fiance is Haitian. I cooked this rice but I think I used too many cubes, I did 5 cubes for 4 cups of rice. Although it came out great. I did notice the rice was a bit sticky. Thank you so much for sharing this video. How w many cubes should I use next time for 4 cups of rice?

    I’m using this method. One thing though, that’s a lot of maggie…I was always taught to use one. How much rice do you make if you’re using 3 cubes of maggi

      On average for my household I use about 3 to make up for the color, I prefer it a tad bit darker, but in this particular video I was cooking for a party of 6, they wanted it to be really dark. Also keep in mind that my pot is a bit shallow and large in size. Thank you for watching!

    Well i tried to make the rice just like the one here and I pretty much butchered it. Could you list measurements. Would make it so easier fr us rookie cooks😓

    They changed the ingredients in the maggi djon djon tabets. have you noticed? the packaging is even different.
