    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:09 Question: "Is it better to spread out videos evenly over time or is all the same for the system, if some are every other day, and some have 1-3 weeks in between when made public?" ‪@DAILYFUNTV1‬
    1:14 Question: "My channel is monetised however I don't turn on monetisation for every other video of mine. Is it true that monetised videos have more likelihood of being recommended than non-monetised videos?" ‪@TheRoamingJhola‬
    2:52 Question: "It seems when I post a video about a certain keyword, it will do great. On the other hand, if I target a new keyword, the video's performance is mediocre at best. So the question is when researching which keywords to use in our next video, what is a good way to gauge the likelihood it might work out? It seems like the algorithm only likes it when I post videos about certain phrases and if I branch away from that it's almost guaranteed to be a dud." ‪@MichaelBordenaro‬
    4:58 Question: Can I take a break?
    6:23 Comment: "MY VIDEOS ONLY GET RECCOMENDED if i upload more videos my older videos get recomend when someone watch my newest video" ‪@soayan-notalentyoutuberph‬

      I always hit the like button at the beginning of the video (before I forget) just because I know the level of effort and time put into most videos, even when I disagree slightly with what the video is saying. I only revoke the like (unlike) if something unnecessarily mean/discriminative was said. But that's just me as someone who knows the amount of trouble people go through to create. I will never understand people who hit the thumbs down button for something like a well-meaning tutorial. But that's just me. 💜💜

    I love this host. You answered the questions honestly, genuinely, and dove deep into each question providing detailed answer with case scenarios as examples. I still disagree with your answer on taking a break because every person who studies UA-cam knows the algorithm will stop recommending a Channel if a person doesn’t watch them for a time or if the algorithm thinks they are no longer interested in that topic. For example; if I stop watching MKBHD for a couple of weeks, I never get his videos recommended to me anymore until I watch one video again, and then I get his videos recommended again. Another example; I used to watch every upload of Magic of Rahat, he took a long break. When he came back, his video was never recommended to me. Only reason I found out he was back back was because of Keemstar. I can go on and on with examples. the algorithm tries to predict what you will watch based on your recent watch history and other factors so if someone hasn’t seen your content in weeks or months or years, the algorithm is going to consider them an inactive subscribe :(
    But anyways I loved everything else about the video and loved the host’s answers. Nothing felt scripted, the host did excellent job connecting with audience and delivering her message. Great job!

    • @ufo2go
      @ufo2go 3 роки тому +1

      I agree. Racheal is a clever cookie and pretty too. It must be scripted but I did not see her read from a teleprompter. A good production but ain't Xmas decorations supposed to be taken down on the 6th of January. Yesterday, my friend came round and requested a few songs. I did not like them but was immediately suggested stuff from the same bands. 🐨

    • @brunosurkov
      @brunosurkov 3 роки тому +1

      I don't thinks it's coded to consider them an inactive subscriber, but it happens as a side effect. Like you said, the recommendations are always based on your recent watch history, so if you don't watch a certain channel for some period of time it falls out of the "sphere" that the algorithm uses to recommend videos.
      My workaround for that problem was to make my shortcut go to /feed/subscriptions instead of the youtube's homepage so I only see videos from channels that I'm subscribed to and then I go later to the homepage to watch something new and different.

    • @ufo2go
      @ufo2go 3 роки тому

      @@brunosurkov Interesting. Which shortcut? How's it done?

    • @ALLSTARSPACE
      @ALLSTARSPACE 3 роки тому +2

      Totally agree, I reckon the data they collect to back up their claim is from the top creators. For everyone else (i.e. us) the algorithm feels it punishes us for anything like taking a break or god forbid experimental content. Having over 100 signals to identify if a video is good or not doesn’t feel right. The fact that we have to spend this time to study like getting a law degree to figure out how we can please this algorithm rather than creating amazing content is telling enough.

    • @todd-youtube
      @todd-youtube 3 роки тому +6

      @@ALLSTARSPACE We didn't restrict the data we looked at from top creators. We looked at channels of all sizes and upload frequencies, and sliced the results by channel size to see if the effects varied, and they did not.
      As for the 100 signals, I wouldn't recommend on focusing on decoding those and "pleasing the algorithm". Our systems look at many signals because doing so means we can deliver recommended videos that the audience finds more satisfying than if we only looked at a few indicators. Rather than study the algorithm, we recommend understanding what content satisfies the audience. The algorithms follow the audience, so focus on creating amazing content for them.

  • @vidIQ
    @vidIQ 3 роки тому +17

    The average views per viewer metrics is very confusing to me.
    For example, I have just set up a graph with videos published in the last 90 days and added Average views per viewer
    as a column.
    The TOTAL states 1.8, yet each individual video shows 1.1, 1.2 etc. None of the get close to 1.8.
    I assume individual videos are showing how often the same person watches the same video more than once (which will obviously be low), while the total shows how many videos from all the videos in the column are watched by the same person, which is, in effect, different metrics.
    I'm hoping that your new 'loyalty and new viewers' metric will help clarify this a bit more.

    • @GhostAnimatorTO
      @GhostAnimatorTO 3 роки тому +2

      I agree. I came to the same conclusion about the metric. Avg. views per viewer on on my usual videos is like 1.4 and sometimes 1.5. But Avg views per viewer is like 4 when I upload 1 video in that month.
      I also think that there should be a new metric like "avg watchtime per unique view on a video" cause I think that's more accurate than just looking at avg watchtime of a video. I analyzed that few of my vids with high watchtime got less views than few other vids with slight avg less watchtime. Like "Video A" with 4:02 avg watchtime performed better than "Video B" with 4:30 avg watchtime. Topics were same and videos length were almost same (Around 9 mins). But "Video A" had 1.5 views per unique viewer making it 6:03 avg watchtime per unique viewer and "Video B" had 1.25 avg views per unique viewer, making it 5:37 avg watchtime per unique viewer. So in real it was indeed the video with better effective avg watchtime, that performed better. This also explains why music video being short in length still gets billions of views. Because even though their watchtime is less, their avg watchtime per unique viewer is way more.

    I have a question. Though I know it was partially answered in the video.
    How do you get more videos suggested? I make R&B and HiHop content and one of my videos was suggested on almost 6 other channels content. Then my next video (though it performed well) did not get suggested at all. Is it a roll of the dice or should I re-change my title to grab the audience attention

    Every video I upload gets 3.000-5.000 views. A couple of them gets recommended by UA-cam 6-8 months later I've posted and they reached over the 30.000-100.000 mark, but those viewers are not subscribing to my channel.
    I don't think I have 188.000 subscribers, probably 20.000 or less.
    That's the feeling I got every time I upload a video. I see some weird basketball channels with 1000 comments in one hour after some dude upload a video, and the video has no context, no story at all, super bad editing, super bad thumbnail from google images... it's really making me go crazy. I'd not care about this stuff if my videos would be recommended.
    UA-cam is not recommending my videos and I see what's recommending for the Basketball category which is cringeworthy.
    I'm not sure about continuing because of the effort I put in and how the platform reacts... it's so frustrating.

    another question:
    I noticed some my videos were performing very well, and the algorithm is suggesting them to viewers and viewers engagement is the same, then suddenly the views dropped like down to 10 to 40 views in hour.
    meaning that a video is getting 300 to 400 views per hour then suddenly in the next hour its dropped down to 20 , 30 views per hour.
    what causes this? what makes the algorithm to suddenly stop suggesting the video even though the viewers are engaging the video.

    Also one good thing to note to all creators on UA-cam is notifications WILL NOT go out if you upload 3 times within a 24 hour period. Livestreams count as uploads! If you're a daily streamer like me it's great to take the night off if you're going to upload a video! I've also noticed posting on your Community Tab section doesn't affect the 3x upload notifications!

    when UA-cam went down worldwide ever since then my channel has been non existent dropping from 23,000 views a day to less than 200 none of my videos have been showing up in recommended where the day before the crash i was being seen all over UA-cam. It has only been from today I began to see a slight rise in views. Has anyone else experienced this. the only thing that happened around that exact time was the crash. This video was fantastic, THANK YOU!! I have a quick question regarding the algorithm, do videos only go "viral" or get recommended in large doses when they are freshly uploaded? Or can an older video unexpectedly take off? I always get discouraged when I upload something new and it doesn't get picked up at all within the first 48 hours. And I'm curious if that means my video is doomed unless another video pushes viewers towards it.

    Questions: Hello, I started last year on YT, and I am wondering if there is a way to tell if I am on some kind of blacklist for YT. I remember seeing my latest video having 6 views and 4 of the views I knew people actually watched the whole video, but the watch time average was showing 0 to 10 seconds of average watch time. After 2 days, the average started adjusting. Also, I chose the channel name "Compunction" because it sounded unique with a deep meaning, is there a chance my channel has been listed as a religious channel because of the name, and are religious channels usually hidden? I changed my channel name a few days ago to something a bit different to try to break free of this just in case. I enjoy creating these original videos and becoming better at filmmaking, but seeing 11 views from 31 posted videos in 2 days is leaving me with a blank. Thanks for creating your content.

      Excellent points and sometimes I feel the same way too. Quick heads up... It took me 1 year of consistent uploads averaging about 2x per week to reach my first 100 subscribers. Doing well on UA-cam is definitely a marathon and not a sprint - at least from my experience. Creators that tend to have what appears as "overnight success" are usually on their 5th+ channel overall from what I've learned. Stick to and follow your passion. Wishing you much success!

  • @ScizGraffiti

    3:20 It's great to hear Rachel say that the algorithm is more focused on the audience than it is on keywords for search and discovery because literally ALL of the channels that claim they are going to help you grow your channel and increase your viewership just go on and on about "keyword this" and "upload defaults that." Not a single one of them will ever put an emphasis in their videos on the fact that the quality of your content is the single biggest factor by a mile, in determining the video's performance. The reason they won't tell you that is not because they don't know that, it's because admitting that would be admitting that their entire channels entered around the topi of 'growing on youtube' are largely irrelevant. Its sort of sad to see people on channels like that having any success by misleading other hardworking video creators and in some cases making a living from it....
    Okay, on a more positive note (and I'm sorry for ranting, I just want to help people) I really enjoy being able to hear all these great questions and have them answered by a professional!

    Thank you so much for this video. You answered a lot of questions that I feel no one really answers. I definitely have been contemplating taking a small break but have been afraid of losing this flow I have going on right now. I'm so close to 1000 and have been pushing really hard lately to get there but I needed this validation to step back and take a break without feeling guilty of not uploading. Also I've been trying new videos lately and am going to try some of those keyword, title, and thumbnail techniques.
