As a fiber artist, the best thing I've found to get myself out of a creative slump is to go through my supplies and look at them, reorganize and kind of play with them. Maybe incorporating a looser improvisational session could help you get back into things. So if you wanted to make a bunch of tiles to test glazes or make some fanciful forms that end up in reclaim might be the kind of creative play you need

Being Japanese (with a love for green tea), I've always held out hope you'd make chawans someday. My mother's name happens to be Mashiko, the same as the town you apprenticed in, I believe? I'll revisit the section of your book you mentioned but I remember you mentioning throwing chawan for an exhibition. Agree with your stand on making items authentically and with a connection to the source or culture, however that may come about. Can't express the joy I get from using your mugs for my morning coffees. Looking forward to your exploration of new glazes.

I think it would be interesting to do a video on your dog and how you keep your studio clean for him. I work with my dog in my studio and I always worry that the dust is going to be harmful for him or that he might get into something. I always wonder while watching your videos if Ciro is with you or if you chose not to bring him because you know you're going to be doing something especially dusty. Although im sure there arent many viewers that also want to see a video about dog friendly studio practices, its something thats always on my mind when i see Ciro!

Love your content! Would love to see a video in which you made something absurd, possibly decorative, but unlike anything you've done before. I can imagine it can be draining making such practical things so regularly. I'd love to see a video with you making something impractical, chaotic, or just downright weird. I can imagine it being fun and creative exploring and making something absolutely bonkers. Hope things become more lovely for you soon. Thank you for everything you do. Cheers.

I think a glaze experiment video would be fun! Such as the difference between the glaze in the gas and electric with the same glaze. Different colors on the same clay. Multiple dips for layers or extra designs with glaze/ partial dips. I think that would be a good way to show all of the different interactions that can shape the overall piece turnout.

My favorite recent video of yours was the soap dish one. I loved how in depth it was and that you were working on a result that had a cool square, angular effect. It was also interesting how it was almost a hybrid between throwing and slabwork. If you ever do tiles like you said you might, that would be really intriguing content to me. But also, since I know that's probably not an anytime soon prospect, I just wanted to offer the positive feedback on the formatting and editing style of that video, and the fun of the square, angular shape with the little bit of carving work into it. Overall, I've really been enjoying all your videos where you explore and explain a bit about the experience of doing something repetitively. This one was fun for the same reason, no matter how simple the shape was.

I am learning to make pottery now and what I would like to see more of is very practical things that can be used to replace plastic household objects. So like a set of shapes that can hang on a pegboard to store misc kitchen tools, hardware for blinds and curtains, and various sorts of funnels and such. watching your videos for about a year now has given me more appreciation for pottery as an art
never gave them much thought when i dipped from art school prep, having a lecturer talk about the aesthetics of a golfball and washing up glove for 3hours took me out of the class quick
but these videos are well paced, admittedly at the start i didnt really "see" your work. That was until a video where you had this red blood like glaze over red rough clay with bronze bits. Reminded me of the soils my friend in Venezuela walks on,how hard it is for him at times. Never really had a piece make a connection like that before.

Love your videos man, they're making me seriously think about getting into pottery. You make it look so easy and I'm not nieve enough to think it will go that well for me, but the way you explain and demonstrate makes me feel like I truly understand the how and why of alot of the precesses. I'd love to see a video detailing the pitfalls and resources for getting into it, where to source stoneware if your not immersed in the industry fully, good beginner wheels, kilns, things you wish you knew in the beginning. That sorta thing. Anyways, keep up the videos. Ps. Shop update please!

Wow - thanks for asking about video interests! I'm always here for that. Things I'd love to see/know more about -
    • recording/production process: what kind of sound equipment do you use? Script first, visuals, or combo? • Would love to see a side-by-side contrast of the glazes in a non reduction fire, just for the sake of curiosity • More experiments with the partial glazing, even despite sad failure of the one bowl that split • The mug bases were really fun - would love in particular to see more experimenting with deliberately hidden tactile elements, like the little divot. I think people *do* like to fidget with their mug, and finding a way to incorporate that haptic or somaesthetic quality alongside the visual aesthetic would be an interesting challenge • Am also really enjoying the element of chance that the reclaimed clay offers, peppered as it is with metallic bits. I think it provides a nice contrast to the highly controlled Florian Gadsby aesthetic, and would welcome more of that.

The fact that each mug isnt identically similar not only adds charm but whenever I go to a store and see a line of mugs that I'm looking at buying, I am the person who looks at every single one, knowing they're handmade, to pick the one that *speaks to me*. The one that's slightly more squat than the others, or has a bit more character and stands out. Because thats the one I'm actually more likely to buy and just that glimpse of asymmetry is what draws my attention. The more a set of ceramic objects look identical, even if its handmade just makes it feel more *factory-ish* not that thats always a bad thing, but any slight bit of added character is never a drawback for me personally, as a consumer.

    • @kstan5112

That being said, the charm of individual things, shouldn't diminish the amazing beyond superhuman ability of someone to showcase their hours of perfecting their work to be able to replicate things so precisely, hehe. 😉❤️ Or showcase their ability and stamina to make so many beautiful consistent items.

Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your thoughts and feelings with us. I don't know if it is something that might be interesting for you, but looking at your latest video of a pedestal bowl I was reminded of a cake plate on a pedestal, as it is seen in bakeries and cafes. All the best and take good care, always put your physical and mental health first, no matter the costs.

I'm not a potter, but as an illustrator I also feel the same with burnout, especially recently. I found your videos by chance and honestly I'm so glad I did. I took a ceramics class during art college and your vids make me miss throwing so much.
As for ideas, have you ever considered trying different glazing techniques? When I did my own ceramics, I took it in a more "whimsical" way and played with gradients, drip effects, and even painting shapes with the glaze itself before firing, which gave some lovely color effects and contrast. I know you mentioned you like your works looking uniform and complimenting the shape of your pots, but maybe trying something completely different might give you some inspiration.

  • @segamble1679

I'd love a video picking a piece or two of your older work, something you don't throw anymore (or don't throw in the same way), and possibly throwing a new version of an old piece. Because your forms are so sleek and simple, the evolution of your style is somewhat subtle, but it's still there. I love hearing you talk about your approaches to forms and aesthetics, and looking back and comparing previous work with your newer pieces could provide some really interesting insight (mostly for us, but hopefully for you too). Visual artists on UA-cam sometimes make videos like this, taking old sketchbooks and redrawing pictures with all the new things they've learned, and new perspectives they've gained.
I recognize this would be kinda hard as a working ceramicist and not solely a full time UA-camr (which is in no way a criticism, please don't change!) but maybe there's a germ of an idea there that sparks inspiration. Love your work (ceramics and videos. All the best in 2025!)

If you want an idea for a very atypical video, I'd have two ideas to offer.
You've clearly inspired lots of folks to get into pottery and taught many of us a lot. How about having folks send you a piece to critique (either real or as a video)? I think it could be nice to get your views on how you perceive pottery.
In a similar spirit: show us some of the works that really inspire you and tell us a bit what makes them so special from your point of view.
As I said, pretty different formats, but if you want something that is tonal break to the videos showcasing your work in the studio: something like this could be nice.

Thank you for posting this, Florian. I like to watch our videos to get out of my own moments of uninspiredness - and It does work for me mostly (and when it doesn't it has more to do with my depression rather than with the quality of your work).
I was very inspired by some of the forms you have been experimenting with, especially the angled mugs with the low set handles. I'm thinking of borrowing that form to make a mug for myself out of glas.
When I was watching your latest videos (the deep red stoneware body with intentionally set brass inclusions), my girlfriend asked my, what would happen, I you would use gold leaf, or if there ist a metal that would show up as silver. I can't answer either question, but maybe would be something interesting to try out. I also thought about the lines you use on some of your work as a decorative element - and if these would work, when they are made more visible by using metal inclusions. But I supposed that wouldn't quite be fitting with your more minimalist style.
So again thank you for your inspiring content and best wishes from germany

I hope this might brighten your mood and help you find your motivations within. I teach a high school class in beginners pottery in Canada. I have shown several of your videos to my students in class to help their skill development, especially with wheel throwing - I bought your book and brought it to school to share the glorious photographs with my kids and I credit you for helping me ready myself to undertake this class because I was a novice myself. I self-taught using you and other potters as resources until I felt capable enough to pass this along to the teenagers after I was approached to see if I might consider teaching pottery. I have taught Art and sculpture for decades, and have worked with clay and ceramic in those contexts, but you deserve some credit for helping me on my journey to making and teaching "proper" pottery.
The glorious beauty of your pottery is that it is very obviously handmade - your perfected, almost geometric forms never look 3D printed or artificial, just the product of very refined skills. Ceramic is a recording medium. It permanently records your work, movements and intentions every step of the process.
    Thank you for the inspiration.

I'm a painter before I'm a potter, though, and I'm currently working on a 4 ft by 5 ft canvas (Which is outrageous, and I only have a total of 11 days to finish it and a maximum of 33 hours for what would normally take me almost a month and probably close to 70 hours so I'm really stressed out and I havent been able to throw in a while so I'm living vicariously through your videos in the short breaks I get between working on other final projects and sleeping) Litterally, thank you so much for making videos, you're actually like in the top 3 things keeping me alive rn ;v;

13:18 yes! I would love to hear your thoughts on moon jars. I would also be really interested in seeing you explore more with singular details, like those red dots or fine vertical ridges. Perhaps a series of stamps or brushed on details. Whatever seems to interest you the most!

Love the work, I feel you with the burnout this time of year. I would personally love to see some videos about the process of testing and making glazes. I'm curious what elements of the glaze are pretty fixed and what ones are used to change its qualities? How much of that process is guessing and how much is more of a prescribed science? Thanks

Welcome back Florian, burnout and low motivation can be a real doozy! I hope you can get back into the rhythm soon. Action comes before motivation. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I’d love to see some more exploration into the sounds of pottery, the crystal tinging sound the finished pots make is fascinating to me!
I also wondered, is it possible to put a marking (like a sharpie mark or something) on your throwing gauge? So instead of having to use a ruler for the first mug, you can just set the gauge to the mark? I do this kind of thing all the time with setting seat height of my bicycle. So if I take it apart, I can put it back correctly with out having to get the tape measure.

Florian - your videos are great. Your words on burnout have motivated me to construct a rare comment.
I've found that the best way to beat the burnout blues is to rebalance diet, exercise and sleep.
Add a SAD light to your day in the lower light parts of the year and really focus on adding happiness to your day and life.
If you don't already listen, look up the Ologies podcast. Allie has a great one on burnout and just rereleased one on happiness.
    You got this :)

I really loved your experiments with metal filings, and how they were to use, and did or didn't work out. I love seeing you experiments and just enjoy what you're doing, regardless of the end product. Some creators reuse footage and change the voice over, if they have another aspect to explain, if that lightens the load at all? I hope the roof gets fixed, and that you find your mojo again :)

Howdy. Can you throw a few "exemplars" of traditional shapes from the UK? What's the difference between stoneware and what could be used as bakeware? What are the dimensions of your ware boards and how did you decide on them?

Somewhat recently you showed yourself unboxing a mug from Jaejun Lee that had some fascinating dripping effects in what appeared to be something like glaze. As Jaejun Lee doesn't make videos to the best of my knowledge, I was left fascinated by how these were made. I'd love to see a video on this sort of effect or something similar, as I don't think it falls within the category of Korean cultural stoneware you spoke about and it's a real curiosity to me.

i've always found a nice thing for a creative slump is to involve someone else. it's easy for me as a digital artist because i don't have to deal with shipping logistics if i want to trade with someone, but if there's another studio local to you, it might be interesting to do some sort of pottery trade (or, hell, even something not pottery). making something with someone specific in mind is such a good motivator. i find myself really invested in getting it just right, and it ends up some of my best work.
another of my go-tos for the slump is trying a new medium, or trying something very different in that same medium. i think a good example in your case is doing some sculpting, or maybe handbuilding. getting out of your comfort zone and being relatively new at something is a good way to really want to get back to that comfort zone lol
as for specific ideas- you mentioned sake ware and it made me think, you don't make much in terms of very small stuff- or haven't done so lately afaik. why not some sort of funky shot glass?

Hey Florian, I think it would be entertaining to watch you do some things at the wet or leather hard stage that are outside of your comfort zone. Only you can assess what that really means but I’m imagining some more complicated carving or alterations like warping the clay with your fingers.

Maybe a British twist version of a moon jar would be popular and definitely interesting to me. Translating the origins of the moon jar to comparable uses and traditions in your culture helps everyone learn a little history, and in the end you may come up with a new style of jar

I was wondering if you've considered going smaller? Something the size of a shot glass would have challenges in all aspects (throwing, trimming, glazing and firing). They could be fast to make, challenging to master, and a great platform for glaze experimentation.

Lovely video as usual, thank you. As to ideas; you do a lot of turning on the wheel which inevitably lead to round objects. To challenge yourself, have you considered trying to make pottery of square objects? I'm mostly into wood working, and I love my lathe, but my materials allow for me to make boxes and planes. Maybe that would be something very different that could still fit within your style?

Video ideas: Collabs like the few you have done previously (soap dish, ramen bowl) or any project the make you throw in a different style. It is interesting seeing you work through a new idea / style.
While the glazing video are interesting they are less relevant to amateur potters who are taking a class and have no control over what glazes they have available to them.

for a video idea, I'd like to see you do something that is almost the exact opposite of your current style, not because I dont like how you throw, but because I think youd enjoy the challenge of doing something very different from normal, how you choose to interpret "opposite" is entirely up to you.
for glazes I would like to see you work with some store bought glazes and possibly modify them a bit, might give people a nice middle ground between just using storebought and making from scratch, and to that end, id like to see you glaze something with a Celadon style glaze, very translucent, mild in colour (though it doesnt have to be, in fact some bolder colours might do well)
generally I suppose you can sum this up with; I'd like to see you experiment and above all else, have fun with the process.
I think you might find somethings in that, which can be used in your production work.

A video showing you mix other colors of glaze would be interesting. Particularly to see a reduction fired full spectrum or as much of one as can be created would be facinating.
Id watch a series on it if it too big a topic to condense nicely into a single video.

I'd love to see the method in which differently coloured designs are made into bowls and other flatware. Good examples would be China plates with blue or red flowers, while the rest of the plate is a simple white or grey. My guess is that those features are painted on with a sort of paint.
Another thing I'd like to see is perhaps dual-tone glazing. 1 colour inside the shape and a different colour on the outside. Though I have no idea how easy or hard that is.

  • @lynettejwhite
