Does everybody need one of these? No! Was it fun to make? Yes! I'm all for spending a lot of time trimming pots, it's my happy place. I don't spend this much time on every vessel I make, some pieces, like mugs, only take a minute or so to turn and finish, whereas others are far more time consuming. I hope you enjoyed the watch - if you've got any other shapes you techniques you'd like to see me tackle, please do reply with your suggestion below! Happy Sunday!
I don't think this is useless. I can definetly see this part of place setting. Like tea/coffeepot top and then around have a nice set of cups and plates. And in my head I have already imagined lovely flower arrangemenr around teapot. Could this also be made to flowerpot? Like if you trim a little hole for excess water to drain off.
I love it, so unique. I'm nothing more than a beginner, but I also really enjoy trimming thrown pieces. I'd love to see even more vessels with tall feet like this. A mug, or a vase?
Serious question; I've been asked to throw an urn for a dear friend's son who passed untimely. I'm honored but terrified. I wonder if you've ever made any pots that include a lid with a gasket or something that will seal effectively... help...?
Would it have been easier to through this piece upside-down?with the interior of the bowl being what was the last thing to carve out and not the narrow foot? I love the video I am just curious if that would have been possible / easier
Florian, I just started wheel throwing in school and it’s one of my favorite things. I swear I just can’t stop thinking about it and I’m a little obsessed. Watching your videos are not only extremely mesmerizing, they have taught me so much. Thank you, please keep doing what you’re doing :)
Wild timing, Florian. I just threw 4 trophy shapes yesterday with a fully hollow base and a functional cup on top. Goblet forms really until I add on the handles. Trimming out a whole base like that is both admirable and insane in the best ways
I am so glad I found this channel. I just started a beginning wheel throwing class and these videos have been such great supplementary help. You also have a very relaxing voice and it makes me less anxious about messing with my clay.
I love watching you fuss away and explain everything you're doing as you go. It gives me good reminders of fine details i sometimes forget in my making! E.g., running the door flat to take a wobble out of the rim...
I know less than nothing about pottery but just discovered this channel and enjoy it tremendously. The cinematography is beautiful! I will keep a close eye on your shop in hopes of starting a collection. Thank you for making such interesting videos!
I'm loving the idea of a totem of functional pieces. I have been looking for an idea for a tall slim fountain, this might be a fun way to go, putting a pump in the bottom piece and a holes in the rest of the pieces for the tubing to travel up.
Florian, another crazy beautiful piece, man! You have such a well defined style that you can even make rather weird objects like this and it's clear that it's your work. Its not in keeping with the conceit of the channel, but I would find it very interesting to see what a piece very outside of your style would even look like.
The fact that this is a single thrown piece instead of two joined together makes it much more interesting to me, even if the end product doesn't really end up meaningfully different.
The fussiness just shows how deeply you love what you do. I'm not a potter myself, but should I ever try my hand at the wheel, I know where to come for all the lessons I could need.
These are very common in tea culture. A Tea Boat. This is just a tall form. Very useful. Helps catch any water that over flows over extended tea drinking sessions!
Seems to me it's more a teapot stand (analogous to a Japanese tea bowl stand 茶碗台) than a tea boat. The spout extends beyond the rim of the bowl of the stand, while a tea boat is of necessity wider than the distance between the end of the spout and widest part of the handle of the teapot.
I'm only at 4:17 so please forgive me if this is answered later on. I wonder if it would be possible to make four evenly spaced out hooks on the side of the stand and four matching tea cups to hang on them? I live in a small apartment like so many others in today's world. I feel like that would not only be beautiful and a wonderful statement piece, but also functional and space saving. ✌️💙&😊 to all!
Was I fascinated by the process and how smooth and elegant it came out? Yes. Did my brain randomly tell me in the middle of it that this could be a bowl and THEN you could flip it and use it as a cup? Also yes. Is that a cursed thought? Maybe...
When it comes to fussing over a piece, I think that's something all artists have in common :'D may it be ceramics, textiles or paint. I love watching it though, seeing what others fuss about and how they approach things and I bet all your other viewers do too :)
I like the way the teapot look important, placed od the peace! Maybe it would be easier to trim, if you throw it upside down. Than, you'd have to trim out only the bowl. But I'm not sure, if that wouldn't disturb the final shape you're going for. Have a great day!
Imagine if there was a way to check the cross section of the whole piece without having to damage it, with like an MRI machine or something like that. It would help a lot with this kind of projects where checking it by touch or give is not so straight forward
May I venture a consideration? I think that trimming the inside of the cup should come AFTER the hollowing that occur at 10.49.... the reason *in my modest perception* is that the pressure needed to hollow the foot might buckle the nicely trimmed cup.... that was a bit risky isn't it?
I would love to have one of these. Would you consider making a lidded version? I'm picturing a series of these of these on a countertop, each holding a different seasoning or spice, like salt, pepper, thyme, and sage.
Quel travail incroyable ! Un sans faute! On pourrait aussi l'utiliser comme vase je pense.... S'il vous plaît, je fais du tour dans une école mais nous n'avons pas un émail qui me plaît comme le votre. Pourriez vous me dire lequel il est ?
I assume there's some logistical reason why you can't but in terms of knowing how deep you need to go, could you not measure everything and use some basic geometry? Eg if the piece is 17cm high, the bowl is 4cm deep and you want a 0.5cm wall, then you know you need to remove (17 - 4 - 0.5 =) 12.5cm of material. In terms of doing the measuring I think it would work to balance something straight like a pencil across the edges, and then measure from the material up to the pencil with a ruler or tape measure.
What a shame that this video didn't appear with automatic dubbing, the last videos appeared with automatic dubbing and it was so much cooler to watch it with the narration in my language. 😢
Your videos are incredible and very inspiring, the only thing that gets in the way a little is the language barrier, but know that you have a Brazilian fan who never misses a video. ❤️
The amount of removed clay is probably enough to make a tea pot with a couple of small mugs. Stupid question: I wonder if you can make this form in two pieces?
I'm not sure I'd classify a display pedestal as a "useless" item. It's use is in the name! It could also double as a warmer if it had a couple of vent holes in the side to let a tea light breathe inside. Either way, what teapot isn't worthy of a pedestal? 🫖
Like always, your video is informative, beautiful and soothing. This last piece you made looks like a ceramic trophy (compare with this old version of the Stanley Cup: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5b/Stanley_Cup_1921.jpg ). Maybe we could call it the Gadsby Cup? 🙂

Then keep on trimming away😊😊😊😊

It would be interesting to see a vase that's kind of that shape but upside down, like with a really big foot or something like that
Serious question; I've been asked to throw an urn for a dear friend's son who passed untimely. I'm honored but terrified. I wonder if you've ever made any pots that include a lid with a gasket or something that will seal effectively... help...?
I love watching you fuss over your work!! Fussier the better!
Would it have been easier to through this piece upside-down?with the interior of the bowl being what was the last thing to carve out and not the narrow foot? I love the video I am just curious if that would have been possible / easier
Now that's some big brain thinking!
Yeah for real ,that's the first thing came to my mind
Came here to ask the same question, but i guess you beat me to it haha
same thing on my mind but I think this was more like an experiment to test the limits of trimming and of the material

I love these pieces with really deep footwells. Theres something about you whole family of chalices. And the trimming is very satisfying.
So informative and soothing at the same time, thanks for this, and i love that there's no music, just the process step by step 🙏
I know less than nothing about pottery but just discovered this channel and enjoy it tremendously. The cinematography is beautiful! I will keep a close eye on your shop in hopes of starting a collection. Thank you for making such interesting videos!
I would eat breakfast cereal out of this thing and feel like a king lol
Now I want to make a royal cereal bowl in my art class
Your pieces are marvelous. Thank you for showing us the care that goes into them.
i'm so here for things that don't have much utility but that are also fun to do! please continue to have fun Florian
I'm loving the idea of a totem of functional pieces. I have been looking for an idea for a tall slim fountain, this might be a fun way to go, putting a pump in the bottom piece and a holes in the rest of the pieces for the tubing to travel up.
That’s a beautiful piece. Nice idea to use it to display all your other pieces. I like the color of the glaze. Green person.
The way the glaze on the bottom edge of the bowl reflects light makes it looks like there is a dramatic tapering just under it/at the top of the foot!
It is slightly absurd but great to watch the build. I was going to post maybe a degree or two steeper on the base but you beat me to it. Well done.
That was a wild technique making it all out of one piece like that. Looks like it was a fun experiment.
Yes, I love the idea of a fancy elevated dog bowl. I’ll have to think about that!
Came out great. Very elegant for displaying a tea pot.
I think those chalice shapes would make cool shaving bowls.

This is stunning as a display piece, but equally my inner child is screaming “that’d be a really fancy bowl of cereal!” 😂
Amazing!! Beautiful shape. Very very beautiful glaze ✨

Oooh it's an elevated dog bowl! Now I want one.
so calming to watch .......
god, your work is always fascinating
Beautiful piece 👍
Very interesting. I wonder if the bowl piece being shallower in your next iteration would hide less of the pot displayed in it? Thanks for sharing.
Nice! I think the top part should be more like a plate rather than like a bowl. It would display objects like teapots more cleanly.

"It's way too tall for the pup in this video" 🤣☺

Could be a very fancy salsa bowl or something to put fruit slices and other finger foods
If you put it upside down, is it a good vase?
Youve made a chalice for soup!

Hey florian, long time viewer and fan here. Just a question, why use a metal kidney instead of a human one?
🤣 I bet because a human kidney would not provide a lovely smooth surface like the kiss of steel does. 😉
Lovely!
Flip it upside-down and ya got an awesome vase or super stable tall stein.
Well done, friend. surprised you include the "g-word," but I love to see character development! :)
great vid btw
A beautiful shape
My grandma have some Rice bowls made of cheramics that have some beads of glass or something so it lets light through, how hard is that to achieve?
❤❤❤😊 Thanks who who who who
I would love to have one of these. Would you consider making a lidded version? I'm picturing a series of these of these on a countertop, each holding a different seasoning or spice, like salt, pepper, thyme, and sage.
How much clay was this? I’d guess like 2.5 pounds? Any ideas?
Lovely
I love fussy work!

Re-listen to 0:30
This is also why you recycle clay that is removed. Little clay goes to waste.
Kinda looks like the Stanley Cup, the trophy for winning the NHL playoffs.
12%=1/8
