Here's a longer video for you this Sunday. These were a welcome challenge to make, although repetitive there were a few things I learnt that I've incorporated into my day-to-day making. I'm so sorry these sold out already. The project did actually go live a few weeks ago and we decided to keep it 'quiet', that way people stumbling upon the soap dishes on the Perfumer H website had the chance to buy one before the 'Florian Gadsby' audience was unleashed. I may very well make more though, they make for fantastic kiln fillers. Thanks for watching!
I love the longer videos, they pair up nicely with a cup of tea. The more "mass produced" smaller stoneware might mean i could catch some florian stuff for my house one day...
Lol I would suggest that handmade ceramic soap dishes to suit a specific bar of soap is significantly more pretentious than the other way around but we're talking about soap that costs I'm guessing over 25 dollars a bar so it's a whole world of pretentious consumption at that level. I imagine there must be some cognitive dissonance knowing that your handmade objects cannot scale and will inevitably be out of reach for the vast majority unless you water down your standards. Edit. Just looked at the site and it's 25gbp which is almost 50 Canadian dollars. Hahaha what. That's a five year supply of ivory. Maybe ten. What a world.
I really love that this video doesn’t hide the time that went into this project. I’ve started to notice how short form videos that show laborious crafts being completed quickly is warping my expectations in real life.
i was so stressed every time i saw you pick up one of those boards with hundreds of dishes on it- but they look stunning! I wish I could have grabbed one before they sold out
I would have definitely set myself back months in his shoes 😅 Although idk if that’s bc I’d drop them or bc I’d spend weeks designing something to hold them into place to idiot proof that process
The petal like crystals were so pretty. I love that you explain the science behind your art. It's so fascinating and makes me excited to see what you create every time.
I went to a Matcha Bar earlier today and the guy who runs it takes care of this absolutely amazing fishtank, so my overwhelming thought was that they look like the baby sea stars that hitchhiked into it.

The curves on the dishes are beautiful, wonderful work . I love how much you teach about the project and don't sugar coat the hard parts of producing a hand made product.
I was very tempted to grab one. I had the chance. But my wife would have been upset had I spent near $300 on a soap dish. (with shipping and everything). They are beautiful, I am going to try and make one for myself. Thanks for the inspiration as always!
$300?! Pounds to dollars puts these at £121 with the soap, shipping and taxes can't be that much surely? Maybe you're right, for once I'm not involved with any of the selling/shipping/logistics for these, which I have to say is utter bliss. They are expensive, there's no denying it - it's a limited edition run for a luxury Fragrance brand and their other handmade goods, (like the glass canisters for their candles), reach far and beyond in price too. Making your own will be FAR more enjoyable and sentimental too, I hope you do that! Appreciate the kind words.
@@floriangadsby For sure its a luxury item that's being offered with other luxury items so the price isn't something I wouldn't expect all said and done. It was definitely the cost of shipping and taxes to the US it was over $250 total. So I'm exaggerating slightly. I feel you get a lot of criticism from people who are frustrated over not getting a piece of your work when you do a shop stock. Which I feel is unfair. So I don't want to come off that way. I hope you take it as a mark of your success! One day I will get lucky and snag a mug off of your shop restock!

i actually really like those ones with "too much" Crystalisation, they almost look like Celadon, which some people in the pottery world think of as being old fashioned and out of style, but i feel like Celadon would actually go well with more "new school" sculptural hard-edged pieces like your style of throwing

Absolutely loved this whole process. Though every time you moved a shelf full of them, I was dreading hearing a bunch of clanking and breaking, a small pause, followed by your voice over talking about remaking a lot so deep in the process. Glad that didn't happen! They really look lovely
The discussion on going about producing such a large volume of the same item is excellent, but I would have enjoyed hearing more about the effort that went into prototyping this design. This is a pretty large endeavor to take on and to learn about the verification process would be a great addition.

I seem to spend my life watching UA-cam videos. So many things to learn on every subject there is. This has been the most interesting to date. Thank you.
I wasnt expecting the soap to be green and translucent, it looks lovely with your dishes! Wonderful choice in glaze. This made me miss some of the mugs i grew up with though. My stepmom is an artist, mainly oil paints, and she has a potter friend. Once or twice a year he'd throw an outdoor party slash exhibition at his house and we'd go home with mugs and other things. They were wonderful, thin-walled so they werent too heavy, several sizes, the giant ones were perfect for tea and felt good to hold, they were often in a sort of hourglass shape, larger on top, so holding them was very natural. All this to say, while i prefer slightly different styles in pottery than Mr. Florian makes, i do think folks should have at least a few small handmade items in their dishware! It really adds something to life.
The commentary at the the start is really interesting to me. The idea of getting great at something by repetition bridges a gap between the physical arts (where you make things that exist for a long time) and the performance arts (where every performance is another go at the same ideal). As a musician I think that I don’t really know a song until I’ve done like 100 times… but artists who create physical objects only get one go at that specific instance of their intent.
I enjoyed all of the 37:12 of the video. I understand and appreciate every second, minute, hour, day and week required to complete your task. It's why I decided to accept JUST small commissions. Kudos to you, Florian.
I make soap so this was really fun to see. Did you know that clay can also be used to make soap? It makes the soap have a slippy feel and also hardens the bars and gives a slight exfoliating quality. Great video and as always fun to see your supervisor working hard there.
26:34 Ah, I was wondering how your design would approach the problem of soap staying too wet on the underside or sticking to the dish! Based on how thoughtfully you approach your designs, I knew you wouldn’t have overlooked that classic soap dish dilemma. And that the shape itself solves the problem? What an absolutely elegant solution. If you find that this shape really does work well for soap, I would LOVE to see the design return to your own shop. I primarily use bars of soap-for hands, hair, body, dishes, dogs…nearly everything. I’ve never yet found a beautiful ceramic dish that works well. The soap always sticks to the dish. I have clever little silicone soap “dishes” from a Japanese designer, but have always wanted a lovely ceramic piece for the bathroom sink.
The final product with the soap on top looks AMAZING!!! Thank you for the long video, i really enjoyed it, even though i have to admit the process looks like it would drain life out of me, but i really appreciate your point of view. This is real mastery!

You'll manage it one day! Thanks so much for taking your time to watch, appreciate you.
Beautiful. Lovely. Wonderful.
I... did not expect such a deep dive. I am absolutely digging this!
That was an amazing project with exceptional results!
Thank you so much, George!
ugh i so miss the repetition of production pottery! This soap dish is such a simple design yet so elegant, great work!
Beautiful from start to finish! The tiles were seriously satisfying.
When you neatly packaged the dishes, I thought I was watching a japanese master, and then you mentioned your training in Japan. It all clicked!
This is amazing. The amount of attention, and time it takes to make these is a skill on its own
Wonderful video. Watched it all the way through - totally absorbed!
I normally see your shorts, and this was the first time I saw one of your long-form videos. Not only did I enjoy your process, but I LOVED seeing your studio mate! I've had doxies for over 30 years. ❤❤
Always a treat watching your vids. Few appreciate the basics in most things these days, that's where one can find true artistry and artisanry.
Blessed day today a 30+ min Florian video
JEEEESUS. I thought soft voice nice backround noise whilst I search amazon for a dog crate, in the end felt like i made these with you, commited once had to watch whole thing only realising you aint making some organic soap. Hatts off to you a lot of detailed work.

The soap dishes turned out beautifully.
Those are fabulous soap dishes and I like the appearance of the soap as well. Thanks for showing us how you perfected all of these.

What a lovely video! Thank you for the insight into your work.
the end result with the soap is stunning!
Exquisite, beautifully designed that goes so well with the block of soap.
I think this is my favourite piece you've made so far. The melding of the circular and square together. It's really interesting given the simplicity.
Lovely and seems a good representative of your work. More please!
