There were over 100,000 (estimated) grizzly bears in the U.S. in the early 1900's. Since the arrival of white settlers Grizzlies were actively eliminated as a threat to food and land resources. Compare this to the first North American people were lived in harmony with the wild animals for thousands of years, learning from and honoring them. The great bears now exist in only 2% of their range.

Some tribes did hunt bear, and used the hide for their ceremonies. Unlike white hunters, they showed respect for the animals and thanked them for providing what they needed. They hunted for survival. Contrast that with white hunters slaughtering buffalo on the prairie and leaving the corpses to rot, part of the heinous effort to starve Native people into extinction.
I'd rather see bears left to live as well, but at least she is using the hide for her ceremonies and to educate young people.

I remember a bear roamed into my neighborhood in Glendora CA. Daylight sets in and the bear probably got lost. Someone's called 911, the bear was being chased and hunted by the cops. One of them shot the bear. Sad thing.

He should get acquainted with the Russian bear. Russian bear teach him how to drink vodka and play the balalaika.

Warning - If you were expecting to see a cute bear doing bear things in a bear forrest - yeah, it's not that thing. Be prepared to watch a disembodied bear dancing in a field.

"Griz was put down for the safety of humans"?
Gotta be kidding me. What if someone killed a human to save a species humans themselves were responsible fot the extinction?
Killing a wild animal for stupid stuff like that.

I actual think its a great tradition. We could have serial killer pelts and do a John Wayne Gasey dance.

Fernandogdc, I think you missed her point. Her nation did not make the call to put down Griz, they are just the local indigenous community that was able to claim ownership of his pelt post-mortem.

It's actually the dumbest take of all because grizzlies are very territorial and won't think twice of killing a human when they come to town. While I can't claim to know what the history of this grizzly, this doesn't sound like a case of hunting a bear and killing it for its fur. The fur was given after it was killed for the safety of humans, which sounds like it was problematic.
