    Przewalski's Horse rescue was (well... actually still is) one of the main focus of Prague zoo. It isn't just a tourist attraction, it is a vault of wildlife from all around the world. That's one of the reasons why it does have such a well build enclosures and paddocks - breeding the endangered animals is a big plan, generations in making. Prague zoo have succesfuly bred the przewalski's horses, apes, elephants, rhinos and many other animals that are simply never or rarely born in other zoos.

    The fact that the zoo was flooded during the massive flood in 2002 and all animals were saved and evacuated is telling us how much love and effort the zookeepers put in their work there, I’m proud being Czech ^^

    Wow, incredible zoo. My favorite part was the amount of effort it sounded like this zoo put into breeding rarer animals to put them back in the wild. I absolutely love that they were leading the charge to bring the prezwalski’s horse back to the wild. I actually thought I read they were extinct! Must have meant in the wild they’re extinct. Anyway amazing zoo tour thanks man!

      There used to be 12 prezwalski's horses at one point at time and thanks to the breeding program there are P. horses in the wild now which is amazing! These guys are literally unicorns! The zoos exhange the horses to widen the gene pool.

      Most, if not all of our traditional ZOOs are like that. One (ZOO Dvůr Králové) is also the only one anywhere in the world still keeping the northern white rhino from extinction - four of them originally. They even established a reservation in Africa and flew them across in hopes they would finally breed, because the program was unsuccessful in captivity. Unfortunately, the males passed away since, but the program managed to save their sperm. And while the females are incapable of delivering offspring (one is too old and not sure about the other one), the program managed to retrieve eggs and is continuing to do so (with safety of the animals in mind, of course), in hopes the closely related and far less endangered southern white rhino could then carry the babies for them. The ZOO in Plzeň is successfully breeding barbary lions and chimpanzees, and the list just goes on ;)

    When me and family went to Prague, we didn’t even know it existed until we found a leaflet in a tourist centre. I mainly came to see the pangolins, since they’re my favourite group of mammals, but we got much more than we expected. Had one of the most beautifully decorated enclosures I’ve seen and it was one of the cheapest zoos I’ve been to for something that looks so much more than its ticket price. If I ever plan to go to Czechia again, this will be my top priority.

    Czech here - Prague zoo is a big source of pride for us (or for me at least).
    I've been coming there since I was a kid and even now, I try to go at least once every year or two. They always got something new - stretching out the enclosures, getting new animals, creating entirely new pavilions... you can really see that the zoo doesn't just sit on the money but always invests into better space for animals.
    It's a shame you missed the new pavilion for gorillas, it's like three times as large as the previous one in a different corner of the zoo. I'm surprised the old one is still in use but the more space for animals the better and I can't wait for the new polar bear enclosure.

    Hi! Nice to see a video about our Zoo!
    Regarding the polar bears, I understand that they are sad in their current habitat, but as for the proposed new enclosure: it's incredibly expensive and unlikely to be paid off by visitor revenue alone. So the question is whether we, as taxpayers, are willing to contribute to preserving the bears. Personally, I believe it would be more effective to focus on preserving them in regions with more suitable climates, where it would also be cheaper.
    The cost of the new enclosure is estimated to be around $50 million (and likely to increase). Based on my calculations, it would take about 625 years to pay off. The zoo currently receives 1.4 million visitors annually. Even if the new exhibit attracts 10% more visitors (an additional 140,000 people), and assuming an average entrance fee of around $14 (though there are discounts), that only generates about $100k in extra in revenue per year. So the math doesn't really add up in favor of the investment.

      @ZSHzootours  2 місяці тому +1

      That's really interesting, I hadn't thought about it like that. I presume the zoo gets government funding as well?

    Good to hear such praise from someone who's been to so many other ZOOs. If you missed the Darwin's crater, that's a bit of a shame. But the Zoo is indeed huge. I rarely visit all parts of it in one visit, but rather choose to focus on certain areas and explore/observe them in detail. I also like to visit at different time of day to get the best out of otherwise inactive animals.
    I've been to all the Czech ZOOs as well as Vienna, Berlin, London, Chester, Toronto. Our Prague Zoo really holds up well. Biggest glaring flaw is the horribly outdated Polar Bear enclosure, like you described. They are so popular (with the kids especially).. I just cannot understand how the directors and the city could overlook them for so long. Well, the new Arctic pavilon is in construction now and if it will resemble the one I've seen in Toronto for example, the bears and the visitors will be much happier I think.
    If you ever get a chance to visit the Moravian ZOO trio of Zlin + Olomouc + Ostrava, those are well worth a visit.

    Let me start by saying this is a great video, it was a real treat and excuse the lengthy comment..
    I really want to see more of the gharial habitat, and giant salamander not just the animals. You had just an absolutely incredible shot of the salamander and showing off their size but not their habitat. Then the gharials.. You had such a stunning shot of them with the turtles, the absolute highlight of the video for me, but I wanted to see more of the habitat too with them in their environment. If there just wasn't much space or the shot wasn't right, it was uninteresting, too many people, etc then so be it. Just making it known that I am here for everything not just the perfect shots of the animals (Which you do incredibly btw). Seriously though great video, this isn't even a criticism, more like a wish list, because I know I will never be there myself.

    • @ZSHzootours
      @ZSHzootours  2 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Photography is actually banned in the Giant Salamander habitat 😆 Unfortunately the signage telling you this is... not very large and almost identical to the standard 'no flash photography' sign that you often see so I didn't realise it meant ALL photography. The footage you see in the video is all I got before a member of staff pounced on me! As for the Gharial that's probably my fault, I should have shot more. I think it is improving in each tour so expect better in future. This was only the third zoo tour I filmed so still learning what works.

    I wonder if it is this rescuing philosophy of the Prague zoo that influenced all others; I live not too far away from ZOO Dvur Kralove and been there many times and they are also leaders in breeding endangered species and bringing them back into the wild. It's a pretty big ZOO focusing on Africa and they have a huge drive-through Safari - If you havent been, I heavily recommend it.
