    Oh, those napkins, sooo beautiful! You’d never find coasters like this in any retail store. With your instructions and product info, we can easily achieve unique coasters for ourselves and gifts at an affordable cost. We can even customize for every holiday and if printing on your own paper or tissue, you can customize for a relative or friend on their special occasion. The ideas are endless. But it starts with your expertise you so generously giving to us!!

      Aren't they beautiful? I just love the idea of making coasters for each holiday. They're so "one of a kind" and so inexpensive to make. I found the tiles at Home Depot for 8 cents a tile. And the gorgeous napkins are only 85 cents at Decoupagenapkins.com and there are 4 sides to each napkin. So each one is less than a dollar. Wouldn't they make a cool wedding gift with the couple's picture on them? Thanks for always watching and sending me the most wonderful messages my sweet friend! 😊💖

    I have two old, beat up Toastmaster serving trays that I use constantly. I watched some of your videos and got inspired to try prettying them up with decoupage.
    I sanded one, put primer and white paint I had on hand on, then used Mod Podge to decoupage some pretty tissue wrapping paper, then finished with a clear varnish. It looked wonderful, until the tannins in the wood leached through. Also, I use this tray to carry my hot tea etc. and routinely spill on it. I 'm not confident that the varnish I used will hold up. For now, I've made a little, quilted pad for the tray to cover the tannin stains and protect the varnish and it's at least a lot prettier than it was.
    But I would like to do a better job with the other tray, if only to prove to myself that I can! LOL. BUT I am not finding clear instructions . I thought maybe my situation would provide a subject for you to cover in a hopefully soon video. :)
    At Decoupage Napkins, I found Dixie Bell Bonding Boss, which is listed as a primer that will seal in tannins. I want the tray to be white, so am not sure if two coats of this primer are enough or if I will need to also add some number of coats of paint. If yes to paint, how do I choose which kind? And what do I use for decoupage glue?
    Also at Decoupage Napkins, I found Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish, which is listed as food safe, as well as both water and heat resistant. The instructions say, "For those projects where an extra touch of resilience is required, apply 2 coats of our satin finish followed by 1 coat of the dead flat finish. The result? A surface that boasts superior resistance to alcohol, abrasion, and heat." What is the point of the change in finish type for the third coat?
    Am I correct in thinking that I'm looking at 2 coats of Bonding Boss, 2 coats of paint, a layer of decoupage glue to stick the napkin on, another layer of decoupage glue to seal the napkin, however long it takes for all that to cure, then 3 coats of varnish?! That's what ... NINE coats of FIVE different products?! I don't even know if these products are compatible. Not to mention the cost. Do I even want to start?!

    • @masoncreationsetc
      @masoncreationsetc  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Christine, Here's what I would do. Definitely 2 coats of the Bonding Boss. I've not used it before, but it does say that it will stop the bleed of tannins, and I trust Dixie Belle's products. Then put a couple of layers of Dixie Belle chalk paint. I use Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish as a decoupage adhesive and a varnish. It works much better than MP. In fact, I don't ever use MP anymore. All of the Polyvine varnishes can double as a decoupage medium. The heavy duty wood varnish is a great choice for what you plan to do. I use that one for everything. I like that it's water and heat resistant and food safe. You can add as many coats of that as you like. I get the satin finish and the more coats you put on the deeper the shine is. Also, when decoupaging on a flat surface I use the water method of decoupage. You'll not get any wrinkles at all. In this video I actually used the heavy duty wood varnish as my decoupage medium and varnish. I put 3 coats on the coasters and the shine is unbelievable. So that gets you down to only 3 products including your paint 😊 Let me know if you have any questions. Also, I'd love to hear from you after you complete your project and how it turned out. Here's the link for my favorite place to get supplies! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to send me a message 😊💖

    I'm learning your technique -- purchased the products you suggested. I'm getting wrinkles. If I wet too much they tear -- I know it's hard not seeing what I'm doing, but I am following your video. Can you give me some more pointers please. The coasters are so pretty. I'm using the 4x4 subway tiles.

    • @masoncreationsetc
      @masoncreationsetc  27 днів тому

      Hi there. You need to use a lot of water. After adding the water move the napkin to pull out the deep wrinkles by just gently pulling on the edges. Don't touch the inside at all, just the edges. And move it a little bit at a time on each side of the napkin. Keep going around the napkin until you've pulled out all the deep wrinkles. This should get rid of all your wrinkles. After you lay the napkin on the tile, remove the plastic slowly. If you have any trouble removing the napkin, you didn't use enough water. The water keeps the napkin from sticking to the plastic. After you remove the plastic, don't touch the napkin at all. Let it sit and dry. Try cutting the napkin to just a little bit bigger than the coaster. Do this before you wet it. If there is too much napkin hanging over the edge, it will cause some problems. Tell me exactly what you are doing when the napkin tears.

      @@masoncreationsetc thank you for your reply. The napkin wants to tear when I put it on the tile. The edges especially are weak. And I think I left too much overhang on one. I did touch it after I put it on the tile because I saw a big wrinkle and it created a tear. I'll keep practicing.

      Just curious, where are you getting your napkins? Sometimes it's the napkins an not anything you're doing wrong. Definitely don't leave a lot of overhang. That will cause problems. Keep practicing. It does take a little bit of time to get the hang of it.

    Do you need polyvine lacquered on wood coasters

    • @masoncreationsetc
      @masoncreationsetc  3 дні тому

      Hi there, if you mean the Polyvine multi surface lacquer, no you wouldn't need that on a wood coaster. But definitely on a ceramic one. But you do need to add Polyvine heavy duty wood varnish as a final sealer. I usually add 3 coats. It's heat and water resistant and food safe. Perfect for coasters.

    I have a question regarding your method of spraying water on the napkin. That video,was GREAT but wouldn’t let me comment. You painted then put a layer of mod podge. Then napkin on the bag and then spray, etc etc. turn over smooth with paper towel, lift up plastic…let dry. NOW my question…..you don’t put a second coat of mod podge?…… Just the original one after paint has dried. Thanxxxxxxxxx

    • @masoncreationsetc
      @masoncreationsetc  19 днів тому +2

      Hi Lois, Since I made this video, I've found a product that works way better than mod podge. I use Polyvine heavy duty wood varnish as a decoupage glue as well as a final varnish. It's not a glue, it's a varnish so it doesn't get thick and lumpy under your image like mod podge can. It can be used on all surfaces, not just wood. I let the napkin dry for several hours, or even overnight and then put the final coat of varnish on. If you do it too soon, you'll get wrinkles, so make sure it's completely dry. I'm going to leave you a link below for a video that I'm using this product for decoupage glue. I'm also going to leave you a safe link so you can easily find the product. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to send me a message 😊💖

      I just love metallic wax rubs. I use them allllll the time. lol... Make sure you use the Heavy Duty Wood Varnish. It's the one that is perfect for coasters. It's heat and water resistant. Also food safe. I don't think it would matter if you use satin or matte. I usually use the satin. The more coats you put on the deeper the shine becomes. It will almost look like resin. I'm just partial to that one.

      Hi Melody, Yes I've used decorators varnish for a varnish as well as a decoupage adhesive. It works really good as a decoupage glue. But for coasters you're going to want the protection of the Heavy Duty Wood Varnish. It is heat and water resistant, as well as food safe. So it's perfect for coasters. Hi Melody, I put one coat of the multi surface lacquer on the tile, let it dry for at least 2 hours. Then I decoupaged the napkin on using the multi surface lacquer as my decoupage adhesive. I let that dry for several hours. It takes a little longer to dry because of all the water. Once dry, I added 3 coats of heavy duty wood varnish, letting it dry at least one hour between coats. I'm glad you're finishing up with the heavy duty wood varnish. It's perfect for coasters. 😊💖
