    In the early 1970's my dad was trying to preflight and load his Cherokee 6 on a dark ramp with no light. All he had was a little flashlight. There were no ramp lights at all. I was no help because I was just a baby!
    A 727 parked on the ramp and the Boeing pilot turned on HER landing lights. It was a huge help to my dad who called to thank the pilot. He was surprised and pleased to hear a female voice! I can't remember her name, but dad had just read about her in one of his aviation magazines. He asked and it was indeed the first woman airline pilot hired in the US.

      About that time, respected US aviation writer Robert Serling (Rod's brother) wrote his novel "She'll Never Get Off The Ground". The protagonist, Dudney Amelia Devlin, daughter of a recently-deceased Alaskan bush pilot, applied to an LA-based airline to fly 737s - presumably the -200 and its Advanced version. Overcoming much prejudice all around, she won her wings and flew flawlessly for 8 months.
      Her career started to falter after she fell in love with a widowed captain. Try as she might to avoid flying with him - and she was adamant about it - they ended up flying together on her birthday. A crazed passenger shot the captain, forcing her to land at a fog-choked airport, below minimums, and with the only 737 in her airline's fleet not CAT II equipped, before he bled to death. Worst of all, she messed up the landing, and lost her job.

    I have no problem with female pilots. But I do have a problem with quotas. So basically, let all compete for the available spots and may the best qualified candidates get the job......REGARDLESS of whether they are male, female, white, brown, Christian, Jewish etc. etc. etc.

    • @jayzo
      @jayzo 6 років тому +16

      I agree with this, and using quotas to force the statistics to make diversity better isn't the correct solution. Making the job appealing to women (for example, using imagery of women in the cockpit) is the correct solution however.

      I was of this opinion too. However, in a world where many discriminatory biases are a reality (even subconsciously), quotas are a tool to force employers to hire the qualified women that would otherwise be unnoticed due to those biases, thus levelling the playing field.

    Thanks so much for addressing this issue. If I had to do it all over again I'd apply to flight schools when I was in my 20's. Ever since I vacationed in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and learned about the Wright Brothers , I became hooked on learning about aviation. Unfortunately I grew up in the 60's & 70's with the mindset that a pilot had to b a fighter pilot from a military capacity, so I was out! Lol! It is a pleasure watching all your podcasts. I love all of them. I watch Captain Joe too and a few others.
    Do a podcast on all the flaps levels and the different situations they are used in.

    It's now the first time i comment on a video of yours, but not the first time i watched your channel, and definitely not the first time I listen to every piece of advice you give here.
    I recently got rejected from becoming a pilot on which i prepared for years (one of the hardest ways possible where i live, cant explain about it much though), do to lacking of ability.
    BUT as I am now in a period of time in which i ask myself if there is a way of pulling myself together and get on course again I've stumbled on your channel.
    I recently decided that I would like to become a commercial airline pilot, and not let the dream i want to achieve dissappear from my reach.

    as a corporate lady flyer, this is what it boils down to: if you can conceive the dream of flying, then you will do it.
    will it be easy, no. nothing worth while in life is easy.
    will it effect my social life: yes (to a certain degree) I remember studying for my ATP, my girlfriends got so sick of seeing me always buried in the syllabus, they got me dressed on a Saturday night and brought me to a club. yes, I did take the book with me, it was important. at the end of the night i did manage two dances😊 Remember, there is one word a Latina cannot resist: bachata💖
    do I need a college degree: yes, well worth the flatter.
    is it expensive: do some research and find the flight school that best suits your needs.
    this question I get all the time: was it worth it? to which I give the same answer: oh hell, yeah!
    good luck, blessings from the Sunshine State.
    mis amigos, suerte y bendiciones desde El Estado del Sol.

      As an amputee, I live by, "If you think you can't, you won't."
      I have hiked hikes that even able bodied hikers can't do, and I'm missing a leg! I believe everyone should succeed to do something that anyone with any sense would consider impossible. It gives you a great deal of confidence and it proves that all the people with sense don't know as much as they think they know.

    The last 3 times I went on a plane, the captain was a woman so it is definitely possible to become a captain on an Airbus A320 being a girl.
    I also think it's sad that there is too few women doing this job. They have a different way of thinking and a different way of seeing things that can be very positive in this industry.

    What a level-headed video! You are a kind person and your commitment to being a teacher really shines through.
    I hope we get more female pilots as the years pass. There's so much in human culture that subtly stifles female ambitions, or perverts them into more acceptably "feminine" ambitions.
    I don't get to fly very often--it's a rare treat for me!--and I've always hoped the day would come that I fly under a female captain. I've flown under a female first officer once, but so far that's it. =[

    I am all for woman joining the aviation world. But It's not inequality if not as many women want to be pilots. It can't be 50% men and 50% women. That is if a lot of women just don't want to be pilots. Don't get me wrong. I'm just saying I would fly with either gender but I haven't met a lot of women that want to fly.

    @Mentour: this video has got new importance after the Southwest 1380 case. Due respect to Cpt. T. J. Shults and 1st officer D. Ellisor and all the people who took part in saving lifes there.
    One completely different thing: this is your second video I see where you tell about the ideal pilot character and refer a "Chuck Yeager style". I know a bit but not too much on him. Was he a special talent or personality? What I've read about him was decripted him as a straightforward, very honest and diligent fighter pilot but not a kind of superhero. How do you see him?

    • @MentourPilot
      @MentourPilot  6 років тому +2

      It’s a common saying among pilots. He was seen as a hero in his day and someone who did extraordinary things, hence the saying.

  • @katego370
    @katego370 6 років тому +7

    To all those people saying that it's not necessary to promote female pilots; you don't get what the problem is. The problem is that girls grow up and learn to dream about becomming princesses or schoolteachers and that is because there still is this idea that if you want to become a great train driver or a pilot or a fire fighter you are going to be a strong man with a uniform. If the stereotype would be that you could become a smart person, female or male, there would be more female pilots, solely due to the fact that girls grow up with the idea that they CAN become pilots and that that is a completely normal job for a woman. Think about docters for example; it used to be only men but now there is a stereotype of a smart and kind docter with a white uniform, either female or male. As a result, the docter dream exists equally for boys and girls. These are cases where normal non-extreme feminism results in normal non-extreme feminist job stereotypes which leads to normal non-extreme feminist work environments. I think the message that MenTour is trying to say is that this has nothing to do with female pilots being needed because they are better at flying airplanes but with female pilots being needed simply because in modern day society, both men and women have the same chances of becomming a pilot.

    • @Wintermute909
      @Wintermute909 6 років тому +4

      But what if men and women *in general* have different interests? If say 5% of men want to be pilots & 1% of women want to be pilots should the airlines accept *every* single female applicant and only the best 20% of male applicants?

    What I got from this video is he is saying the stereotype of an airline pilot doesn’t need to be the older gentleman with the graying hair. Anyone who can pass ALL the tests/requirements is welcome. Be it male or female. So to get out of older stereotypes he’s encouraging females to step up IF they want to.
    Agreed that PHYSICALLY females generally have less strength but he clearly said that this shouldn’t be an issue for this job/career.
    Now, being a female firefighter would be much harder physically so it would be understandable if they aren’t able to pass the requirements.
    Of course there is always much to discuss regarding females entering traditional male dominated careers this is just my one opinion made.

    what's the issue? they only need apply and pass the tests.
    how many do that is up to them, nobody needs to do anything.
    So here is a question: You say the ratio of females to males in piloting is not 'where it should be'.
    Where should it be? And what's your argument for it being that way? Because to me that sounds like a whole heap of nonsense.
    We need good pilots, not female pilots or male pilots or at least 25% pilots need to be gay. What's the issue with those ridiculous demands? If women want to become pilots then let them? Gender equality isn't about forcing any particular job to be 50% done by males and females respectively. It's about giving everyone the equal chance to do those jobs.
    I don't want to be sterotypical, but it's just a fact that men and women are not equal, neither physiological, nor psychological. That's why women prefer to do less risky jobs while men do more risky, better paid jobs or to take initiative and want leadership.
    The same debate goes for firefighters, most types of engineers, military, police, etc etc etc.
    But strangely enough no one seems to complain about the lack of men as nurses in hospitals or as attendants in child care taking facilities.
    And that's because a minority of women want the payment equality, but they would rather spend their time complaining instead of doing the same jobs as men, which they don't want but could do if they'd just apply for them.

  • @robertslade3847

    I don't have anything against anyone following their ambitions but why does it matter if a given career path is more popular with one gender? In 2016 I was involved in an accident and during the resulting stay in hospital most of the medical staff I met including three physiotherapist's were women. It did not matter. All I wanted was to get well and they helped me do that.

    • @antheiheiant

Are the requirements for female pilots different from the requirements for male pilots (I'm not talking about anything specific, just the general requirements)? I was born and raised in Upstate New York (north part of New York State, does not include the New York City suburbs, Westchester County, or Poughkeepsie). How are the requirements for pilots in the U.S. the same as the requirements for pilots in the UK? How are they different (again, I'm just talking about the general requirements, nothing specific)? We're running out of male pilots that are willing to take up spots of former pilots, so the airline industry needs to hire female pilots to take up places of former pilots.

      Let me tell you. It's sad that the job pilot is rarely every marketed towards women. It's sad that women on the flightdeck are at a higher risk of sexual assault or other advances. It's sad that no matter how qualified you are, everyone will always trust your less qualified male colleague more. It's sad that everyone has all these negative preconceptions about female pilots, when statistically speaking, they're safer than male pilots. Do I go on?

    Okay, So this is a very simple topic women are better nurtures for children correct, better then men at caretaking in general. Men have better motor skills and typically are more inventive and intelligent. That's not supposed to be offensive. People have to stop being butt hurt over the reality of life.

    @Mentour Pilot Oh for goodness sake don't be so arrogant responding to one of the comments.
    You cannot deny that the guy is speaking a lot of truth regarding the alarmingly lower Caucasian birthrate nowadays and on a seperate issue and particularly relevent issue with regards to the subject matter, the immense harm it does to children's wellbeing and development (when under 5yrs old in particular) to have a largely absent MOTHER (absent fathers, not quite as much!)
    A women cannot be a full-time e.g. airline pilot and be a good mother to her young children. That is the uncomfortable truth.
    Before you give me any hate / sarcasm, I am an teenage girl who has amost finished PPL training, onto ATPL exams next and would not have chosen this career if I wanted a family because I accept that it would not work.
    Let me tell you, I used to work at a nursery in tge UK and it was heartbreaking seeing anxious young children (including BABIES just over 3 months old for f*ck sake) being dumped in the daycare each morning because mummy chose to go to work, and I wouldn't wish this on any child.
    More 'modern' women need to understand that life is about compromise and you can't 'have your cake and eat it', so to speak. Here's a thought, if you're an airline pilot, your passengers won't give a sh*t about how well you did your job on a day to day basis (apart from 'saving the day' during extremely rare emergency) 50 years from now, but your children will ALWAYS remember how well you cared for, loved them and did your most important job ever, as a mother. . .
    Just wanted to say my bit on this as an almost qualified (hehe😆) female pilot before you throw the 'sexist' or 'woman-hater' 'stuck in the 1950's' label at me.
    Now, back to Nav revision with that damn CRP-5 😥🛩

    Can an openly gay man with depression issues that are under control become a pilot - or even work as a flight attendant?

    • @cwiisp
      @cwiisp 6 років тому

      Chaotic Peace i mean, sexuality has nothing to do with the career. Gay/straight/bi or whatever.
      I don’t know about depression though, from what I understand they’re multiple tests for your health both physical and mental, and its easy to not have an operuntiy into the field for that reason. If you’re looking into being a pilot, its reccomended that after a “trail first lesson” you get checked medically, so that if you cannot, you havent waisted money on multiple training sessions or classes.
      As for a flight attendant i dont think it matters much. Same as for an airline worker who works ticketing or gates.

    I've loved your videos up until now, but this video is WAY off base. We shouldn't be choosing pilots based off their genitalia. We should be choosing them based off qualifications. If that means there's more male pilots then so be it. If that means there's more female pilots, then so be it. If that means there's only 100% of either gender, then so be it. Your video here calling for pilots simply based on their genitals is wrong and it's dangerous.

    • @Zinnie988
      @Zinnie988 5 років тому +4

      DukeOfMarshall , I am sure he is not talking selection by genitalia. He is an instructor and will make sure that only qualified men and women get chosen. He is only putting a word there encouraging intelligent and well educated women who are interested in flying to join the flying community. He is not going to waste time on the video spelling out prerequisites and requirements which are a must have. He is addressing changes taking place and the growing acceptance of women within the piloting community which can be further expedited. Just as in every other field, qualifications are still a must have for everyone.

      Please google the difference between equality and equity. There would not be so little female pilots, if the equity was there. It has nothing to do with qualifications. The problem is not that less women could pass pilot tests. You are the one of base & you're completely unqualified to make such a gross comment.

    You can train anyone with the basic talent and prepare them to be a pilot. However, if you choose from pilots for your airline, and base that choice on a factor OTHER than abilities and a demonstrated record of good flying, then you will end up with a bad situation, and solely because you were concerned about how it looks to have two men up front.

    I think I've asked this before, i'm not quiet sure, but how can students like me who's 18 with not the best grades afford pilot training? I know there's pilot programmes like 'british airways future pilot programme' but unfortunately I don't meet the entry requirements. Are there any good loans out there what support pilot training because neither do I or my parents have £90,000+ to get on a full time course.

    It's the same with female engineers or female truck drivers and other hard jobs.
    You have to sacrifice a lot to do the job. You have long working hours being long time away from home, having a family is difficult, you have to do a lot of overtime and what not.
    Women tend to prefer the benefits of a regular job with less hours, being more often at home and so on. Men tend to accomplish something, to feel important, useful and with a higher status (which women can look up at - and they often do so). Women don't need a higher status. Men will love women even if they have not a high paid job.
    Yes, women and men are different and they make different choices. Nothing wrong about that.
    Stop trying to make everything 50/50. Norway - one of the most egalitarian countries in the world - tried it in tech field and they failed although they spend millions in campaigns and support of women (sometimes to the disadvantage of men but it didn't helped either).

    I think there still is some sort of tendency not being wanted by female
    does not mean no female want to be, sure some females want to! neither pilot is not `male` job. Because of tendency, it is hard to increase the rate of female pilots vs male pilots. To solve(?) it, simply fire male pilots, easy to think hard to do hehe. I hope that at least number of female pilots increases
