    I have wanted a snake for about 16 years but always thought “I can’t have a snake because I can’t handle seeing the dead rodents”. In my early 20’s, I had pet rats, which made this aversion to dead rodents even stronger. But within the last several months, I’ve come to realize that those dead rodents aren’t any different from the animals that makeup the cat food I buy for my cats or the fish that go into the pellets for my goldfish. That shift in perspective eliminated my hesitation to add a snake to my family, and I’m happy to say, yesterday I brought home the most beautiful, adorable, friendly little ball python baby. It’s okay to be sad for the rodent, but ultimately it’s no different than feeding your cat. Obligate carnivores gotta eat, too ❤️

      Exactly. Im gonna have a ball python in a few months and i used to have pet rats too. The key thing is to distance yourself. I used to have two cats and now i have a dog, and giving a snake a rodent is no different than giving my dog dried cow throat as a treat. Also, people themselves eat meat all the time! Is giving a snake, an animal that cannot choose its diet one mouse a week that different than eating a steak? Its arguably better, since the snake will eat the whole thing, while people will only take whatever they like from an animal and discard the rest.

      It's no different than eating if you're not a vegan, plus rodents can be pests, so if I had to feed something I think I'd be most comfortable with that, especially seeing there an issue where I live and costs thousands in damage to daily living

      You honestly won’t be dealing with rodents too much really if you’re just feeding frozen thawed, the only time you really come in contact with them is to move them from the freezer to warm water and then from there to the snake enclosure for a few seconds. Think of it as just dead meat and enjoy your pythons!

    A feeding tank is a good thing for your snakes because they are smart enough to recognize that when they are picked up and put inside that they are going to get fed. I used a thirty gallon rubbermaid container and all of my snakes recognize it as when I take it out, they'll all start getting excited. It isn't uncommon for them to literally crawl out of my arms into the container when I carry them over. They also know that after dinner they will be picked up and returned to their tanks and heat lamps and again, they will often happily crawl into my hands so they can get back home after they've eaten.
    As such, i've never had an issue with them thinking that hands coming into their tanks are potential food as they've been trained that the only time they're getting fed is when they are placed in the feeding container.

    There are a couple companies here and there that make "whole prey" sausages. I got my Corn Snake switched to the sausages and honestly, it is so much more convenient. Unfortunately, my Ball Python said no, so I still have to get frozen rats, but hey, no more mice.
    If you have a Ball, don't bother, but if you have a Kingsnake, Corn Snake, or maybe a Garter Snake, it wouldn't hurt to try them out if you dislike the whole thawing of rodents process. Apparently the sausages are great for Turtles and Tegus too.

    fun fact: many a snake keeper has started keeping rodents of different varieties because their snake decided that alive food is stupid, or that it ratheer wouldn't eat for a few months right now, and then the snake keeper jokingly named the rodents, and cared for them, and loved them and couldn't feed them to their snake anymore.

    I always use dog waste bags (just because I have dogs so I always have them around anyway) instead of zip locs, and they're the perfect size whether I'm feeding with a pinkie or a large rat, and I use two so that the rodent doesn't get wet as it's in the water. It works great.

    I think I’d resort to the early stages of force feeding before I’d give a live prey item to a snake. Sometimes all you need is to put the item directly into the snake’s mouth for it to accept the food item. Allowing any creature, even if it’s live food, under my care to suffer is something I could never do.

    I personally, thaw out my rodents in the fridge, and use a hairdryer to warm them up, no water involved, and my ball python takes it great. (it was feeding on live at the breeder, i tried to feed it f/t, the 3rd week it was with me, using this method, and it didn't even hesitate to take the prey item.) It does how ever, make the scent very strong, enticing for the snake, gross for you.

    Love the video. I do not own a snake, though I am responsible atm for feeding a large red tail as well as making sure his water bowl is taken care of. He's unfort not in the greatest of enclosures as the owner is a horrible horrible owner, but I do my best to feed my roommates snake.
    Anyways. I have always fed him live. I put the rodent in his enclosure, back away and watch. I make sure the snake gets a good grip and then I leave. I guess I am a sociopath or I just have a better fortitude for these things, but I never felt bad for the large rat we fed this lovely boy. I will never -ever- abuse that rodent. I will make sure that its fed and given water, before gently placing it into the enclosure.
    Everyone has a different way of feeding and there is no one right way of doing things. At the end of the day, we are all responsible for our ownership of our companions and do what we think is best. Just do what you think is right and don't let people tell you that you are a monster. That's all I have to say on that matter. Both live and F/T have their cons and benifits. Its up to you as the owner to determine what you believe in.
    And of course, the laws of your country. America doesn't have the laws that other European countries do.

    My 1 yr old male ball python was given to me by a friend, and she feeds her snakes in a box because that’s what she was told to do. So he’s used to that and I can tell he knows it’s feeding time when I put him in there. He immediately gets all excited, sticks his head up, looks around, sniffs with his tongue, and pulls his head back so he can strike. I’m sure you’re right and it may not really help to feed him in a box, but he’s never had any issues eating and I don’t want to change his feeding routine and risk causing problems. He gets handled pretty much daily when he’s not digesting a meal, and he seems to like being out and exploring a little, so I don’t think that part bothers him either. I always make sure He sits for a few minutes after he’s eaten before I pick him up, and I make sure to support the part of his body that has the rat in it so he’s not uncomfortable and doesn’t regurgitate his meal. Once I put him back in his enclosure he sometimes gets a drink of water and will go under his hide, after that I usually don’t see him for a couple days while he digests his meal. Anyway, I guess I’m wondering if it could actually be harmful to him even though he takes to it very well and if I should really try to get him to feed in his enclosure. Awesome video as always 😊

I’ve had my corn snake for 6 years and have always fed him in a separate tub with no issues but have just been told this is not really the proper way to be feeding him. Would it be difficult to switch him to feeding in the tank? I don’t worry much about aggression, he’s not aggressive at all, but I worry about him getting confused. It’s ok! I don’t really think it matters how you feed your snake. As long as it gets the food it needs, your perfectly fine. If you aren’t having any problems with the way you’re feeding, it’s not worth trying to change the method. Save you’re time, and keep doing what you’re doing ❤️✨👍 the reason that some of us don’t recommend it is because sometimes the snake gets stressed because it’s being handled before the meal (picking it up). But as I see it that’s not how it is with your snake, you’re good to go 🥳

    The most horrific injury I have seen a snake suffer from a rodent bite, was when the rodent had bitten the snake INSIDE of the snake's throat! ...
    I believe it was on a NERD medical video, and the snake had developed a large barnacle-looking growth on the wound from infection.

    I just got my first ball python and his first three feedings so far have been live, outside the enclosure. He’s still small and eating rat pups so Ive been putting him in a tupperware container, waiting for him to have a firm grip on the rat and then I cover the container with a blanket to let him eat. I thought I was teaching him a specific feed time so he doesn’t try to bite, but after watching this I’m wondering if this method will cause unnecessary stress for my snake?? I keep lizards so this is totally new territory for me, and I definitely don’t want to upset my danger noodle 😢

    Can I catch anything from frozen/thawed mice or rats? Also I saw some just put a frozen mice right into a ziploc bag then put it in a container of warm or hot watch for 15-20 min. IS that a good method? I will be getting a corn snake. Or is just putting it in the fridge okay?

    • @MegaAppleshit
      @MegaAppleshit 6 років тому

      I usually get mice from PetSmart. The ones in boxes labeled Arctic mice. They are irradiated so if there is anything that doesn't get killed by the freezing, they will die from radiation. That being said, I have never heard of anyone catching anything from a frozen mouse.
      As far as the mouse in a bag in water, that is pretty much how I do it, but I do it a little different. What I do is I put the mouse in a bag and put the bag into a container and run cool to lukewarm water over it very slowly. (The smallest stream your sink can make. Let it fill up and overflow.) Once it is thawed out, dump the cool water out of the container and use warm water to heat it up. Never use hot water as that can scald the mouse and make it smell weird and loosen the skin to the point that it makes it difficult to swallow. (My snake refuses scalded mice)
      That being said, corn snakes are usually REALLY good eaters so you will probably not really need to heat it up and if you do, just pop it back in the bag and run some warm water over it.

    I've had good success with feeding my new ball python mice that have been put in hot water while in a plastic bag. I feed her in the evening or night.
    The first time it took me a bit, but I think it was partly she was still a little nervous and I had to learn how to do it, I just had to figure out the mouse dance. She struck a couple times without latching on from her hide, but I could see her tongue going and that she was interested. I put it back in the bag and warmed it up again, and got her to strike and keep it the next time.
    The next time I fed her she struck so fast I was startled lol.
    I do have a question- I notice in some videos keepers that have a lot of snakes feed the rodent what looks like soaking wet. I heard that f/t rodents don't have quite as much moisture as a live rodent, so I assume this is the reason. How important is it to do this? It seems like it'd be much more likely to pick up substrate. My snake has done some dragging around after a strike to get it into a better position to swallow.

    I have a corn snake that will not transition from pinkies to fuzzies or small mice. Given his size he really should be eating small mice but he will only eat pinkies. I feed him several at a time to try and get him the right meal size but that's not great for me or him. He's a male palmetto and is pretty severely bug eyed and am not sure if that would affect anything? I've tried so many different methods to try to get him to take larger feeders with no success. Any wisdom or advice? Thanks!

    My ball python has always been a very picky eater, he's gone almost a year without eating before. Currently it's only been a month or two since he's eaten. I did try to feed him live once and he struck (he usually skips that and goes straight to nomming) but the rat did scratch him and he has a scar. I don't know if I should try live again, or keep going with frozen even though most of the time he shows pretty much no interest. Do you have any suggestions?

    So is piebald just blotched albinism?

    • @FangirlKatydid
      @FangirlKatydid 5 років тому

      GHOTI GUY albinism is actually the absence of black pigment. Most albino snakes are various shades of red and orange. A piebald snake, on the other hand, has large portions of its body that lack any pigment at all. I would love to see a normal colored animal with albino patches. That would be really cool.

    I was under the impression that it was a good idea to feed outside of their enclosure. I thought it helps condition the snake not to have a feeding response in the environment you interact / grab them in

    • @roundhouse2616
      @roundhouse2616 Рік тому

      This is kind of true, but in most cases the cons outweigh the pros of feeding out of enclosure. The main benefit (no chance of a snake thinking it's being fed when it's not) can be achieved in much easier and less stressful ways, eg target training, or any other kind of training that lets the snake know when it's being fed or not.

    • @animesubya
      @animesubya Рік тому

      Yea however you can 'train' them. For me, when the tongs come into the tank my snake knows it's feeding time.

    • @kagiza4003
      @kagiza4003 6 років тому

      Devon Thompson If you are responsible and have lots of space, I would recommend a water dragon (the australian one). Very hardy, adapts to new situations quickly and it's very intelligent for a reptile. If you have less space, you can still have a sudan plated lizard (more active and intelligent bearded dragon) or some kind of dwarf monitor (I'd recommend varanus tristis aka freckled monitor, because it's less likely to damage itself like v. acanthurus for example)
      Smaller species? Okay then, I'd say gargoyle gecko. Territorial, but usually friendly towards humans, omnivorous and usually smarter than its crested cousin. In snakes I totally recommend elaphe schrenckii, aka amur ratsnake/russian ratsnake. Probably the smartest snake known to man, I'm not joking. It's beautiful (especially the melanistic ones), good memory and has got big appetite. Good luck with choosing something!

    How do you know what size to feed your snake?

    • @galactica_0553
      @galactica_0553 4 роки тому

      You look at the thickest part of the snake. As a general rule(for most species) you want the mouse/rat/rabbit/etc to be 1 1/4 the size of that. Some species 1 1/2. Just look into what species you have, plenty of videos. My few month old sand boa is on pinkys and my 2 year is on fuzzys

    I thaw the rodents in hot water and I feed them wet to my snakes, it also works fine. I use newsprint as a substrate for that reason, it doesn't stick to a wet rat and there is no risk of ingestion.
