Tunnels have been solving traffic jams in major cities since the 19th century, we call them metros.
I prefer to take the car than deal with transit. More tunnels for cars would be better and a faster solution.
@@starshipdriver8536 i understand that you prefer it but making tunnels for car has happend often and is less effective at moving people, it is also slower because metros can travel faster in tight tunnels then cars due to them being on tracks
Except metros cost 10x more. For low throughput car tunnels are more economical.
@@ogzombieblunt4626 its more economical to remove a car lane from the road above and put a bus line instead of all the tunnels
Imagine if we could come up with something like a supersize Tesla that ran on tracks and was attach to other supersized telsas that each could hold like 50 people each and could go 60-120mph wouldn’t that be futuristic
so.... its like a train? but slower? and with less capacity?
Trains cost much, much more lmao
I think trains in Japan go like 180 mph and can hold like 200
Well normally it’s like 1person per Tesla
And probably more dangerous
Yeah telsas are more dangerous like a small crack in battery and you become the human torch
the traffic issues in the USA were single handedly created by one man, a Swiss-French Architect, leader of the Modernist Movement in Architecture, Le Corbusier.
Le Corbusier designed in the 1950s the ideal city for the future and he taught his ideas to architects all over the world, he hated old Paris, and he wanted to remake the entire city, the irony is today old Paris is the most demanded sector of the city.
so how this dude fucked up the world? very simple, he suggested the idea to organize cities by districts per function, like financial district, housing district, shopping district, industrial districts, etc.
So imagine every day at 8 o'clock in the morning everyone in the housing districts has to move to their work in every other district, forcing the entire city to move at the same time. this is what creates the traffic.
then it also makes life easier for crime, because during the working hours housing districts are empty, maybe a few nannies taking care of toddlers, and a few stay at home or work from home people. Then during the night the working districts get lonely so if you go out of work very late you are screwed because you are crime bait.
also at evening before dinner everyone is moving in the city once again. so more traffic.
this is why the idea of "15 minute cities" has been proposed, which isn't anything revolutionary is that urbanists observed and realized that the experiment of Le Corbusier failed, and that the old cities like old Paris were superior to the industrialized city because they are human size cities. Industrialized cities were terribly planned, and old cities were organic.
I really don’t understand why this comment has only receive one like this makes so much sense
You must be thinking of someone else. Perhaps you are thinking of Frank Lloyd Wright, who reimagined suburbia in the 1950s shortly before he died. Maybe someone else.
Le Corbusier was a very influential architect, but the United States is probably the country where his ideas had the least impact. Other than his construction method for skyscrapers one hardly sees his influence in the United States at all.
this comment just totally ignores the fact that the oil and airline industries have consistently lobbied for highway and car-based infrastructure while lobbying to hinder transit projects....
@@The_TermiGator No, it doesn't, but all comes from Le Corbusier, and it wasn't the airline industry, it was the car industries, who put the pressure on government to fulfill the ideas of Le Corbusier. It was a multiprong situation.
Leave my like so more people read this!
So...in many cities since the 1900s it was called "tunnels" and ironically...in some places they hooked trains in it and called them..."subways".
Hows that ironic?
Musk is a genius! One suggestion is of he laid tracks down and use train cars instead of Tesla, the cars can carry about 60 people and go way faster.
Tell the LVCC to lay the tracks. The Boring Company just takes contracts for digging tunnels.
Wow I thought part of the draw was that it didn’t need a driver in the tunnels.
They sure hoped for it but bureaucracy seems to have stopped it.
It doesn't need one, it has to have one.
That's because Tesla follows the law! the cars could easily drive in there but the local government is butthurt and didn't allow it.
They're just not capable 🤷♂️ fsd 😂
by law it has to be accompanied by a driver. the car can and will do it itself. but our outdated government and laws say it must be supervised
Why you would even think going 25 mph in a cramped tunnel in a car that holds at most 4 passengers plus a dedicated driver would do a better job of solving traffic issues than a full on subway train that can go a lot faster and carry more people is just crazy.
Cause a subway train will cost 100-1000x more
@Kenion Would a full-on subway cost more than the Vegas loop? Sure. But for that dollar increase, you'd actually get decent passenger traffic thru it instead of the snail pace the Teslas have to crawl at.
So again, why would any sane person think this is a good deal? Moving the car traffic jam to cramped underground barely single lane tunnels where God help you if your Tesla decides to catch fire just doesn't make sense.
Because you have to ride with other people on a subway
@@tevinabeysekera9881 You still have to ride with someone else in a Tesla, even Elon doesn't trust his "self-drive" in there, nor you driving.
@@spiridion2838 I am saying that you have to ride with others on a subway train. Some people don't like that.
Narrow low speed car tunnels do not solve any traffic problem. They have no throughput. You could literally put the Glasgow subway in these tunnels and run their trains and easily exceed all the transport volume requirements they had. It would also require no driver (if you use the new stock) and less energy than the Teslas. Maintenance would be cheaper too. The only downside would be you had to tolerate the existence of other people.
Driving through a tunnel is definitely not somthing only a tesla can do. Its wild, but tunnels were actually invented before Tesla's.
You entirely MISS the point ... Other tunnels HAVE to have MASSIVE air exchange systems...
Somtimes I'm baffled by how stupid some people can really be.
@@DemonNitrix They elected Biden, so NOTHING surprises me anymore...
This makes the heathrow pods look good.
This is an underground taxi system when Las Vegas actually needs subway trains.
Here me out. Replace the teslas with subway trams. More people can be hauled, less mechanical parts, more economical, faster, less “drivers” = less workers needed, don’t need roads so less blacktop or concrete is needed (one of the leading cause of green house gasses) less batteries needed (leading cause in green house gasses) and overall way more efficient…
Also, for those saying hyper loop is an innovated design… this is practically the same thing only better. Still individual pods, underground, don’t have to worry about air pressure, easy to change pods or do maintenance when needed.
I understand this is a promotional thing Tesla is doing and it’s pretty cool. Just my hot take.
if you have to drive it, someone is going to fuck it up..
So, Elon just decided "Hey what if we took the worst parts about trains and buses and put them together in one package"
Absolute fucking genius of our times man. Definitely not a guy who has a rageboner against decent public transit or anything.
OP is right, only Telsa is capable of making something this embarrassing. 👍
I love Tesla but cities need to make their cities more walkable and make actual public transportation. That would actually get rid of traffic.
Respect to the drivers.... driving all day in such tiny tubes. A bit left, a bit right and all go wrong. That´s how future looks like. Cars driving in tiny tubes.... Yay ^^
What a huge waste of money. They were thinking metro is too efficient and decided to throw money down the tube instead.
That’s just drive thru subway. America just tryna add cars to subways now
Yes it’s called a subway we’re more than just a few people can ride 😂
Right and what happens it it breaks down ik the tunnel. I feel claustrophobic just looking at that tunnel.
Same as when a train breaks down.
Oopsie! There’s an accident in the tunnel, and now there’s no way for ambulance to find it’s way in 😋
If Elon wanted to have a Tesla something it would be great if it was a Tesla subway.
did we faze out lead pipes yet, the amount of sheer idiocy on the internet is really astonishing
Those scratch marks on the tunnel though AI gotta be drunk driving.
wtf driving thru that BY HAND cannot be easy 😂 one little fuck up and it’s over 😂
I have a really wild idea. Lets makr thr cars bigger to hold more people, they can run on rails, and be powered by rail. We'll call it the third rail, and the cars can be called a subway
All the people advocating for public transit have never had to take public transit in a major North American city. Even Toronto transit is sketchy. Go to Detroit and take transit for a month in February then tell me how much “better” public transportation is then a car. I’ll wait.
Just need more tunnels with no driver. Lastly higher top speed, 25 mph is only a bit faster than what you can do in LA’s worst traffic jams.
Back in the 1940s you could get across Los Angeles county on light rail (streetcars) faster than you can now drive on its freeways
The supreme irony of that statement is that most LA freeways run on the ripped up rights-of-way that belonged to light rail systems
The USA once had the absolute greatest public transportion systems in the world, but they were systematically destroyed from 1948 onwards
The GM/standard oil/firestone tire/national bus line conspiracy is well-documented but what's not realised is that it started out as a plan to sell busses. It turned into a more sinister project as buses proved less economic/convenient than streetcars, encouraging greater uptake of cars in cities to avoid the hassles and GM saw a sales/marketing opportunity in conjunction with the spread of interstates
The increased sales of cars in turn cannibalised intercity passenger rail (people wanted transport at the far end) and then subsidised airports started driving nails into rail's coffin.
Oh i hope they find a solution i really want fast underground transport. Hold on, let me just forget the metro since it isnt a car so its bad. (the metro is more effective then independent cars en if you jave a lot of car because you will get traffic jams in tunnels)
@@BiddyDA Have you heard of the concept bus like Tesla that’s supposed to launch? Probably the closest we’ll get to a metro instead even better since it won’t break down as much and also be cheaper & more comfortable.
@@ferniegutierrez5605 an electric bus is both inefficient and very dangerous, you dont want to power large vehicles with batteries since they are both heavy and inefficient. Hydrogen is in largen vehicle more effective(maybe safer idk) since hydrogen is way lighter. Also if a electric bus catches fire it will not stop and battery explosions are very sudden and big
@@BiddyDA yep, as dangerous and explosive as they are in EV's such as Tesla's. Hold on, aren't those cars in those tunnels Tesla's? So an electrical fire in a battery in a tunnel... a tunnel without any emergency exits or safe guards... what could possible go wrong? *STARE*
So they basically made a normal tunnel , but only for teslas, without safety in case of emergency
This is a really dumb way to not build trains. Just shows how out of touch Musk really is.
Actually, it is a brilliant idea. A train has to stop at each stop. When you get in one of these, it goes non-stop to your destination. No stopping to pick anyone else up. Or drop them off.
@@FoundOn_Earthbut a train picks up hundreds of people a stop.. this... Picks up maximum 4 per "carriage"? I don't get what problem it's solving....
@SomeOneFromOFS That's a fair concern. While it's true that the electric vehicles used in the Loop can carry fewer passengers than a train, they should eventually make up for it in speed and frequency of service. Since the vehicles will be able to travel up to 155 miles per hour, they can transport passengers quickly and efficiently. Additionally, the frequency of service can be increased since the system is designed to allow for more vehicles to be added as demand increases. It is primarily designed for short-distance travel in urban areas, and the personalized experience of a smaller vehicle can be attractive to some passengers. Ultimately, it is just another transportation option that offers unique advantages and may not be the best fit for everyone, but it has the potential to be a valuable addition to the overall transportation system and not a replacement. As a former driver for the Vegas Loop, I can understand your concerns, @SomeOneFromOFS.
No need to build trains when you already have cars. Just build the tunnels everywhere.
@@FoundOn_Earth if the car in front of you in the tunnel is stopping to drop/pickup passengers, you're stopping too
useless and expensive, sorry Elon, this idea was really stupid
I didn't find this "boring" at all....😊
How do we break it to them?
Tunnel ls dont solve the traffic issue. Less cars solves the traffic issue.
Idk I feel like id panic if the car died in that tube and I couldn’t get out 😂
The city of Las Vegas has you covered here. There are emergency exits to help you get out. And your driver is required to be able to drive the car out in reverse within a certain time limit.
Just be a traffic Jam underground this won’t help anything
Elons a little late , 1870 in New York Alfred Ely Beach, the editor of Scientific American, bored an underground tunnel under Broadway that stretched 312 feet (95 m) the subway was driven by pneumatic power. An eight-foot (2.4 m) long car that could carry 18 passengers was blown through the tunnel by a 100 horsepower (74.5 kW) fan; the blower was reversed to create a partial vacuum and suck the car back through the tunnel. Way cooler than a telsa
Have you heard of a T R A I N?? Cho Cho motherf-
Only Teslas could charge $5 and be limited to 25 MPH in a tunnel
lol.. this is like if a child made what elon was talking about..
what if some accident happens? not driving accident particularly, then you are all just stucked there until it is solved,
Aren't they just underground tunnels
Have you ever seen an overground tunnel?
This is one of the most pointless transportation systems ever conceived.
How can you say "only" a tesla can do this!? Are you ok?!
It's awesome to use tunnels instead of traffic
The hyperloop fraud!!!!!
What mi/kw do those cars get?
About four to 4.5.
in fact- the car WILL drive this loop in autopilot. plans for the final version will be that the car only drives in autopilot while in the tunnel. this system isn't meant to replace trains- it's meant to free up lanes of traffic on inner city commutes- which it does quite well. however- compared to cost of a subway when compared to a boring tunnel- the price of owning a tesla and commuting per passenger vs. subway? no comparison. subways costs BILLIONS, take FOREVER to complete and generally operate at a loss, paid for by the tax payer. labor unions and a handful of very lucrative construction companies that stand to lose billions in dues & contracts are PISSED! their product just isn't as profitable- which is the REASON boring tunnel will steal a huge chunk of their lunch. costs of boring tunnels per mile are staggeringly lower due to several factors:
1- they don't require nearly as much ventilation (no gas fumes- like underground highway would)
2- no massive grid infrastructure needs- since the cars carry their own power source (unlike subways)
3- the tunnel is MUCH smaller, cheaper & faster to bore- and the company has specially developed their own brick lining of the tunnels, that makes the bricks FROM the dirt they excavate- ON SITE.
leave it to musk to disrupt yet another industry. I take public transport every day- the rails, roads & subway systems are a failure at best. if they weren't- musk wouldn't be able to sell his product.
speaking of trains- they also have a 9 passenger 'trolley' version planned for use in much longer boring tunnel loops around cities like LA.. for pedestrians to get from A to B. expect to hear more whining & crying about that when boring tunnels & tesla automation move more business away from road construction contractors, car makers & big oil.
generally speaking, people who think that trains are a better idea... don't realize that public transit paid for through government is just one of the many reasons large metro areas cost so much in taxes- anything the government gives you? they take your $10 and give you back 10 cents worth of product. you voted for public transit and it only costs $13? great.. and then your property tax is $5000 a year instead of $1200. way to go forest gump.
Disrupt? Hahaha 🤣 oh man , that was good .
@@g2westwood yes- DISRUPT. big oil & big auto had the EXACT same response in 2009 when elon announced his plan for EV's. 'HA! FUNNY! NO WAY!'. NOW ... they're spending BILLIONS on fud campaigns, stock manipulation and lobbying to try & slow tesla down. boring tunnel will be no different. public transport is unreliable at best- I would know- I take it to work. we're late nearly as often as we're on time and sometimes? we don't get there at all. the rail operator's response? "welcome to trains".
bruh, 5-10$ fee? i can buy a bus pass for $5 and go anywhere i want all over the city.
So a subway, but less efficient
Tunnels with no safety exits ? No thank you. Create a better public transportation system will reduce the need of using cars in cities and as a car manufacturer, Tesla will be impacted so, the illusion of helping traffic with tunnels for Tesla seem viable. If Tesla continues to sell more and more cars then like Superchargers at certain periods, those tunnels will be jammed as well.
Solve something? ROFL!!!
your not gonna help traffic at that scale. you want to help traffic, put in an actual train subway and shift 10,000s of people an hour.
I love how people who ride in these tunnels once or twice think they know these tunnels well. The limit while you rode was 25. It varies. Also that driver doesn't have an idea about why they don't have the cars driving themselves.
It's probably really stupid. Something like, cars above ground aren't allowed to so why should you be able to do it in your one car wide tunnel.
jealous. you will never be 1% of what Musk is.
The whole point of this was to automate it... now some schmuck has to actually navigate through the damn tunnel... seriously Tesla... what is going on?
I enjoy lots of Elon Musks creations. But not this one
Is this just for electric?;gas the exhaust would kill you
Basically anyone who doesn’t support this doesn’t have a tesla or in most circumstances, afford one .. yet! It’s called convenience. Why do people order delivery? Why order anything in amazon? You can just drive until you find a retail store. Or, why take freeways to begin with? Just walk! In each scenario, it takes longer! And people with disposable income want to save time by paying money aka buy a Tesla.
Class dismissed!
Get Elon's hog out of your mouth
So what you're saying is ; Tesla owners can't think for themselves?? How much crap has he promised ? Hopefully starship isn't a dud , and cybertruck turns a profit soon ....cause his planned cashcow twitter is backfiring . I can see it all crumbling and being picked apart by other companies . Especially with chinese electric vehicle companies applying pressure
What year was this made in? The boring company went out of business. A total flop and failure.
Lmfao
It's a good idea .. the only impractical part are the cars! I get why they used their own cars .. but a small electric train would have been a much better solution! Not cooler .. just more practical!
😐
Everyone is saying this is a subway or metro. Here's the difference, a metro can't get you to exactly your destination.
When you take a subway, you get off, does it always deliver you to the front door of your destination? No. You'd have to walk or take a taxi.
These tunnels allows you to drive your electric car (because there's no exhaust for the tunnel to remove) and you can keep driving directly to your destination.
In the future, Elon already said, you can have a 3D map of underground tunnels, almost unlimited, up and down and sideways to connect many points
Also, this is to solve gridlock. Anyone living in a big city will know the soul destroying feeling of stuck in traffic.
ROFLMAO I hope you were joking.
You know how many stops it has? 3.
All of them predetermined because they had to drill and provide ways to get in and out.
Just like a metro does. If a metro stops at a shopping mall it's by design. If this over expensive ridiculous thing drops you at the convention center it's by design. However, instead of having a metro that can carry hundreds you sit in a car that can carry max. 4 people.
What if eventually any tesla will be able to autonomously take tunnels in different cities like this as a shortcut.
His is best choice for people who enough money but can't afford own copters and jets with that they can save time
This is so brilliant, we need to implement this into every major city. Imagine if they could up the capacity by putting electric buses in there too, that would be a total game changer.
Ever seen a tesla on fire? Tick tock.
What's your point?
every seen an ice car on fire ? its 10x more likely and ice cars cant drive in a tunnel like this because the exhaust.
@flujori the point us if a Tesla caught fire in that tunnel, the occupants will be dead and the fire dept will need to wait for the fire to burn itself out because they have no way to get to the car. The occupants even if they could get out if the car will die long before they could get to the exit.
Musk is Tony Stark.
Yeah just put trains in, Yeah i know, Thats too old school and practical not George Jetson enough.
"only Tesla could do this"... What? Make a tunnel less useful than it was before?
It might fail
