The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Game of Thrones for the first time.
While recovering from his battle with Jaime, Eddard is forced to run the kingdom while Robert goes hunting. Tyrion demands a trial by combat for his freedom. Viserys is losing his patience with Drogo.
Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.
Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. The show premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons.
Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. The second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros' northern border.
Game of Thrones attracted a record viewership on HBO and has a broad, active, and international fan base. Critics have praised the series for its acting, complex characters, story, scope, and production values, although its frequent use of nudity and violence (including sexual violence) generated controversy. The final season received significant criticism for its reduced length and creative decisions, with many considering it a disappointing conclusion. The series received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Its other awards and nominations include three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, a Peabody Award, and five nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama.

Book fan here with some more helpful stuff for Lexi!:
"Here We Stand"are the words of House Mormont, the same as "Winter is Coming"is for the Starks.
Viserys's speech is really sad and it makes me feel for him in the end. Jorah swore to serve him and abandoned him as soon as he felt like it because of his loyalty to Dany. Viserys spent his whole life trying to get back "their"lands from Robert and it seemed close, but because of his impatience, he refused to stay with Illyrio while Dany travelled to Vaes Dothrak and Dany and the Dothraki shaming him lost him any chance of respect.
Ser Gregor is "the Mountain that Rides", the giant man who speared the witness, Ser Hugh, in the neck and tried to kill Loras(Knight of the Flowers) and brother to the Hound. Tywin(who you haven't seen yet)is Tyrion and the twins father.
Book version had a plotline that was mentioned that Robert was going to send his namesake(Lysa's son)to foster with Lord Tywin Lannister(which was why Lysa ran back to the Eyrie, as he'd be a hostage). However, the Maester at the Eyrie says to Catelyn that Jon was going to send the boy to Dragonstone to foster with Stannis Baratheon(Robert's middle brother, who we haven't met yet), as he needed to be taught discipline because of what a brat he is.
Bronn is a sellsword(mercenary), so he figured Tyrion would pay him more(he only came with the arresting party with the expectation of a reward). He also knows how to fight men in armor. Book version wears a halfhelm, gloves with metal on the knuckles and a shirt of ringmail. Catelyn(the narrator)mentions that he looks almost naked next to Ser Vardis, who wears plate armour with a falcons wings on the sides of the helm. Bronn tires him out and tricks him into breaking his sword on a statue, then topples the statue onto Vardis before stabbing him in a weak point to kill him.
In a Trial By Combat, Vardis could have yielded, but then Lysa would have to treat it as Tyrion being innocent. She's far too arrogant for that.
Joffrey scene reaction:(Me: Puppet glancing away meme).
Sansa:"I'm meant to be his queen and have his babies!"
    Arya:"Seven hells!"
    XD! Same Arya. Same.
Not that it justifies what he became, of course, but I always feel such pain and sadness in the way he says "Well, that's all I wanted. What was promised..." Dany's POV says that his final smile was what hurt her afterwards. He just wanted to feel like he was a king and not a beggar that everyone mocked him as.
I don't think the show explains enough about how Viserys wasn't always as bad as this. Viserys was forced to raise Dany after being forced into exile, with their mother Rhaella(who Viserys adored) dying giving birth to her, which is part of why he takes out his anger on her so much. Viserys and Dany were saved by Targaryen sympathizers first, then when their patron died, they were robbed and thrown out onto the streets. Viserys apparently kept Dany alive, most of the time being a good brother and telling her stories about dragons, but because he actually was born in Westeros as a prince, he forever was bitter that their "rightful place"was taken. He tried to beg for aid from different armies and sellsword companies and they laughed in his face. He eventually was forced to sell his mothers last keepsake, her crown, to keep the two of them alive. Dany says that is when the last joy left him.
On top of that, Viserys grows up paranoid like his father was, believing Robert has sent assassins to kill him(from Ned's POV, it's clear that its not true, as Jon Arryn convinced Robert to just let them remain in exile). Where we see Viserys is at the end of his rope. Harry Lloyd did an amazing job as him though.

(no spoilers... this is all stuff that's been shown before this episode) All three of Cersei's children are blond. Only Joffrey is a bastard in the figurative sense as well as literal. We haven't seen much at all of her other two children, but what little we've seen up to this point indicates that they are both sweet kids. They were noticeably relieved to hear that Bran was going to live in Ep 2. So I don't think the circumstances of his birth is to blame for Joffrey's character. :)
Their sweetness probably comes from having an older brother in Joffrey, and being relatively neglected by Cersei (relative to how much she favors Joffrey, that is). Myrcella (the middle child) probably had to become kind of a mother to Tommen (the youngest) and try to shield them both from Joffrey.

No spoilers - When Jorah confronted Viserys over the dragon eggs, he said "Here you stand", the words of House Mormont (Jorahs house) is "Here we stand".
Viserys death was sooooo satisfying. He was literally the worst. Drogo giving him the golden crown was *chefs kiss!
Daenerys not getting burnt by the scolding egg was hinted at in episode 1. The handmaiden tries to stop her getting into the bath, claiming "it's too hot". Daenerys comfortably slides in and feels nothing.
The reveal that Joffrey is the son of Jamie and not Robert, is also more shocking of you believe what Cersei told Catelyn Stark in episode 2. "I had a dairk haired boy who died" - meaning this was the son of Robert and Cersei (a note - that scene doesn't happen in the Book and there is no mention of any other children apart from the three current children, so it's open to interpretation - either it was included as a seperate plotline exclusively for the TV show, or Cersei was lying to gain sympathy and feign a common ground with Catelyn)

"I'm sorry, the _six-year-old_ is going to decide Tyrion's fate??"
There's a darkly hilarious conversation between Lysa and Cat in the books that goes something along the lines of:
"He's my precious widdle baby and he's far too delicate for the mean outside world and solid food," says Lysa about the six year old.
"He's the Lord of the Vale and Warden of the East!", retorts Cat, _also about the six-year-old._
Not an exact quote, of course, but spiritually. They both have equally unreasonable expectations of the capabilities of this six year old boy, but Cat's unreasonable expectations are so widely accepted that nobody thinks they're at all off when they're just as unhealthy as Lysa's.

    • @gogaonzhezhora8640
      @gogaonzhezhora8640 Місяць тому +1

You are making the mistake most people do. thinking in today's terms. He is an aristocrat, a lord and a high lord too as Warden of the East. This is how it works in the feudal society. Kids are groomed to become lords from the youngest age(and they are taught to fight at the youngest age). Of course Cat does not mean that he is supposed to rule and fight at the age of six, but in their world a lord's son is considered fit to do so way earlier than kids are considered adults today. So they have to be prepared and educated. That is what Cat means. Instead Lysa is making an infantile idiot out of her son. By title he is already the ruler, but of course others rule in his stead at that age.
      (SPOILER ALERT!)
But let me tell you the story of Baldwin III. King of Jerusalem. When his grandfather king Baldwin II. died he was one year old. His mother princess Melisende(!) and her husband Fulk ruled while Baldwin was too young. While they got in a fight about succession(!) after Baldwin II.'s death i.e. who's kids are going to be kings. Melisende won. Her Baldwin would become king when he was old enough. Fulk died after a hunting accident(!). He lived for three days after. So while a child and his mother ruled in Jerusalem some Crusader States started to gain independence(!). Meanwhile Baldwin III. grew up and won his first battle he personally commanded at the age of 16(!) against Nur ad-Din. You literally see the source Martin drew from for his books, naturally not only English history.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy 8 днів тому

@@gogaonzhezhora8640 I'm not making the mistake of thinking of it in modern terms, I know Cat's views are of her time and her society. It makes perfect sense. I'm not bashing her.
I'm just pointing out that the conversation is hilarious if you _do_ look at it through a modern lens. Though, looking at it on its own terms, in most cases like this Lysa (or someone else) would be Robin's regent and rule for him so the six-year-old was not expected to assume all the responsibilities of Lord of the Vale and Warden of the West before he'd even lost all his baby teeth. Lysa is combining the worst of both worlds by completely shielding Robin from reality _while still allowing the sheltered six-year-old to sentence prisoners and oversee trials._ I just find it very funny - and very telling of just how messed up feudalism was as a system - that Cat objects to an emotionally stunted six year old being allowed to sentence people to death because Lysa hasn't raised this particular six year old right, not because maybe someone else should hold the power until he's old enough to have a clue what he's doing/maybe this power shouldn't be hereditary.

You sweet summer child here means a person that's never known the harshness of a cruel winter. That metaphor is greatly enhanced in a setting that takes the Summer / Winter relationship to a whole new level. I hear it and immediately think of other similar references of children born in different seasons have different attributes described to them like Hogwarts houses, the courts of the fey in many stories and games take on these attributes. I'm pretty sure the exact saying may go back further than these books, but I have no proof :P

Here is some history on variations of the phrase taken from Reddit (Palgary posted it):
      Palgary
answer: It's a really old term to talk about someone's innocence or purity, but it became popular after being used on Game on Thrones TV Show around 2011 and is mostly used sarcastically.
A lot of people believe it was first coined in Game of Thrones, but there are a bunch of examples from the 1800's you can find using it. Unfortunately, when you do research online, you can see stuff from the late 90's made for the internet and on, and you can see older works no longer under copyright, and not really anything inbetween. Since the GOT book came out in 1996, everyone insists everyone book, movie, album, or song after that came from GOT.
So - we have to look inbetween. And in 1989, The Little Mermaid, we have a great example of someone saying "Sweet Child" in a pittying way, to mean someone is naive and inexperienced.
Little Mermaid: "Poor Child, Poor Sweet Child" (1989) ua-cam.com/video/1ahskvuGlg8/v-deo.html (0:12)
That's not the ONLY meaning. It's also a term of endearment - like in the song "Sweet Child O' Mine", or the use of "Poor Sweet Baby" in a 1973 Charlie Brown Strip or a 1974 Country Song.
For an 1800's example - this is a photo marked ""Poor Sweet Child" where a sick girl is being seen by a doctor, so this one is tragic.
      thanatosarchive.com/2019/01/12/poor-sweet-child-blog-exclusive/
Summer's Child means a child born in summer, though it can have poetic meanings too. You can find Winter's Child, Autumn's Child, and Spring's Child as well if you look, and you'll even find the same meaning in French. Some examples include:
Summer's Child, 1932, Sketch of a woman carrying a baby: high.org/collections/sketch-for-summers-child/ (Although he is best known for his religious illustrations, Allan Rohan Crite was a significant biographer of urban African-American life in Boston during the 1930s and 1940s.)
Infant Gravestone marked "Summer's Child", Born July 1983 and died the same year - so this takes on the meaning of "only living a summer": www.stmargaretshistory.org.uk/catalogue_item/gravestone-of-strevens-oliver-charles-1983
I've seen some horror/dark/noir movies with "Summer's Child" and "Winters Child" as the title, but I'm not sure how they are using it, and I haven't seen the movies.
If you look at education - you'll news articles from 2018 about Summer Children struggling in school compared to their older classmates. This was being discussed in the 90's as well, when GRRM was writing, as you can see in this document from 1998 that references older research.
      files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED421218.pdf
Crosser (1991) was interested in studying the academic achievement of"summer children" who entered kindergarten at theage of five and those who entered at age six, assuming a cut-off date of September 30.
Research conducted by the Ohio State Department of Education in Columbus alsowere concerned about younger "summer children" in a longitudinal study of 27 selected districts. They showed lower standardized test performance through the first grade and found that 25 percent of all "summer children" received Chapter 1.
I also remember this usage of Summer Child back then in schooling, before 1996.
I haven't been able to fact check this Quora Response which lists books with "Sweet Summer Child" in it: Quora.com
But if you check Google Scholar, you can find some examples in poems like this one by M. A. Macdonald in 1889, where they are talking about a "Sweet Summer Child" who is innocent and pure, striving for good, to the point the Angels notice their purity.
      Poems M. A. Macdonald
Or this one, of a pure and fair girl named June:
      June by Renos H Richards
Or this one, a sad poem about a loss of a child:
      Little May Tyng
So even the full phrase has a long history. I have a feeling we'd find more examples in print if we could search copyrighted material pre 1996 more easily.

Trial by combat can be to the death or to first blood. Bronn drew first blood. Vardis then raised his visor and looked at Lysa, expecting her to call the fight won by Tyrion, but she didn't, so he had to fight on. When Bronn had him on his knees, _he_ paused and looked at Lysa, again giving her the opportunity to call the fight. But she didn't, so he killed Vardis. Chucking him through the moon door was pretty insulting and unnecessary though.

When Jaime and Cersei discussed Bran in Ep. 3, they made no reference to the assassination attempt. They weren't involved in it. Tyrion would have had an interest in silencing Bran just to benefit his siblings but any of them could have paid in gold, not with a highly valuable dagger people could have recognised.
No, the dagger was given by someone who either wanted to implicate someone or had access to nothing else.
Tyrion wasn't seen carrying that dagger in the 1st or 2nd episode, by the way.

Sorry about the multiples... different topic. :) Regarding why everybody was shocked by Ned's reaction to the Gregor Clegane situation... Ned was just thinking in terms of getting justice for the people. That's what he's used to thinking about. He's not used to compromising his principles for the sake of political expediency, which is what everybody else was expecting. He wasn't used to thinking about how powerful Tywin Lannister is, (and minor spoilers for the next episode, which I know you've already seen) or how famously ruthless and vicious Tywin is to anybody who slights him.

This also goes back to Roberts rebellion and what Tywin and the Mountain did there. Ned hated them ever since, this was more about justice for Elia and her children than the ones the Mountain just killed.

I have always wondered why Tywin did not seize the crown when the Mad King was killed. Jaime was in a position to hold the throne, the Lannister's are the richest family in the Seven Kingdoms, and their army is as large as that of the Baratheon's. At the time Cersei was not married to Robert so why not become King?
About the duel between Bronn and Ser Vardis; Bronn is a sellsword, a mercenary paid to fight and kill while Ser Vardis is a knight, bound by honor and used to fighting in tourneys but usually not to the death. Bronn almost certainly has much more experience in fighting to the death and knew he could tire Ser Vardis, especially using techniques that were not considered honorable but were very effective. The reason Bronn was looking at Lady Arryn before he killed Ser Vardis was to see if she would yield and save Ser Vardis life, which she could have done. As her champion, Ser Vardis could not yield, it had to be Tyrion's accuser.

People who seize a crown have a hard time keeping it. William the Conqueror did and his descendants had to fight rebellions at each succession for 150 years. Having a king chosen by the rebel alliance and marrying his daughter to him was a smarter move.

    • @mimmo4762
      @mimmo4762 Місяць тому

Well, Tywin DID try to seize the crown. But Ned arrived before him, and let Robert take it because he had legitimate dynastic claim. Also, individually yes: equally large armies. But Robert had a lot more support: Ned alone controlled half of the continent and Stannis's fleet was legendary.

Also Robson Green & Jerome Flynn (Bron) spent 7 weeks at No1UK music charts in 1995 with their cover of Unchained Melody. The single sold over 1.8 million copies & was the biggest selling single of 1995, and the second biggest selling UK single of the 90s behind Elton John's behemoth 'Candle In The Wind 97' UnchainedMelody
