Wow, I was in that audience. I haven't heard this in almost as long. My roommate was a taper. I couldn't make it down to VA (where they first unveiled this tune after so many years), but we'd heard about it, of course. Then, in Philadelphia, hoping they would make history again, we held our breaths as they started in on the opening chords. I can still so clearly remember that moment, leaping when Phil sings the first line, trying not to topple our gear... Wow! Thank you so much for posting this!
I was at this show, too ... so blissed out, and I wasn't even trippin lol. The energy was amazing. Have never experienced anything quite like it since.
I was at this show as well as the Hampton breakout. Older and wiser today, but still love the Band. Hope you are resting in Peace, Jerry, 'cause we sure are missing you..
I was at this show. This song was awesome, We heard they played it a few nights before.. We were all really hoping they would do it again, and they did!! fantastic. Brought a tears to my eyes..Stevie G. Nashua N.H.
I was fortunate enough to be there, and this is unforgettable. The crowd went absolutely insane throughout the whole song - the noise was deafening. Bobby was trying to do his 'short break' rap at the end, and you could tell that he was overwhelmed by the crowd.
I was there and thanks for posting it. That song was the best part of the night. It was always my favorite Dead Song. Last time I heard and saw him alive. still can not believe he is gone.
wherever your Spirit is now, Jerry, may he always be Bright!! You've given the world so much light and warmth with your music, that you will never be forgotten.
without Jerry everything is "just a box of rain" :( Great Man has passed away so long ago... Jerry, your music make the whole world moved... With greetings to the surviving members of GD and all fans -- cheers from Poland!!
This was a very very special time. To be in Philly for the Spring shows every year meant the first few warm days of the season and hearing songs like Box of Rain and Unbroken Chain on WMMR during the day when you were running around town or meeting old friends. Everyone heard they played it in Hampton, and everyone thought it was a one-time thing. No one expected this, and everyone was completely overjoyed by it.
Saw them the following week at the Hampton Coliseum (late March 1986) where they played for three nights. My friend and I were blown away at the crowd and how good the band sounded. I feel fortunate to have seen them on this tour...definitely a concert I'll never forget. The Hampton Coliseum was also one of the great concert arenas back in the day!
i am speechless i wuz ther.....3 teenagers later...who all love the band...at41 i just had a baby boy.....beautiful...a box of rain, and love, wind and water...believe it if you need it....or leave it if you dare.......a short time make it every bit of what its worth....tears of joy...
I'm almost 31, never did either. Finally saw them a few days ago for the 2009 tour. No Jerry, but a ton of fun. Fans were awesome, best group of people I have ever seen. All smiles, all dancing, all singing. Give it a try if they come to your area.
Phil recovered quickly when he started " ..to do for you.." instead of "to watch for you as.." but I mess it up there all the time too. One of my favorite songs of all time. Much love Phil.
Dear togaroc345, thanks for the Box Of Rain info, reminded me of how long since I have heard this live. BOR was played at my first show (5/73) at Kesar in SF with the great Wall of Sound - God i'm getting old...... : )
Your so lucky, that they chose to do the tour this spring/summer...... You got to see the band live (minus Jerry of course)- and take part in something thats been having such a strong influence on millions of people for the last 40 years.... VERY glad to know theres still young people out there who "get it", and recognize how magic these guys are especially when they play live music together... congrats !
that crowd brings me back.....only saw a handful of shows all in hampton and they were everything they were said to be.........stood up close one time and saw all of terrapin stone sober it was tiiiight. Jerry really was the leader
"A box of rain will ease the pain" I was lucky enough to see the dead 7 times in high school and saw the Jerry Garcia band in november of '91.(Blues traveller opened the show)
i got goosebumps. Not from the song - I usually prefer to listen to an LP or an mp3 than listen to a live recording - but from the LOVE in the crowd. Oh man, I wish I was alive to see these guys play live.
@corn3rston3 dude what you said could make me cry. You perfectly summed it up. Very nice, thank you for being such a wise, genuine music lover, and understanding what music is really supposed to be and supposed to do for a person's soul.
Hey hidden, the Dead are alive and well and touring as Further...I miss Jerry as much as anyone, but his spirit and Love is still there w/ Bobby, Phil, and the fellas...
don't forget the nearly three month coma Jerry went into after RFK in july. That's the coma where they didn't play until december. This is also a cool video to see, as i was born in '91 and didn't get to see many Dead shows :)
Great to see that this exists on video!! However it was March 24, not the 27th. They closed the show this evening with a Morning Dew that became known as the "Kadaffi Dew" because of it's proximity to Reagan's bombing of Libya.
well hannah, it's the grateful dead. this is live from the philly spectrum. the reason everyone is going crazy in the video is because this is "box of rain" s a song phil wrote about watching one of his parents die in the hospital. this is only the 2nd performance of the song since 73.the other being 4 days earlier. while the quality and sound of the video is subpar the emotional value of this song is rich. everyone was excited because it's just one of those dead moments. a lapse of 777 shows
Phil wrote the music. Robert Hunter (of course) wrote the lyrics for a man whose father was dying (Phil specifically but really anyone in general). It's a song of loss and hope.
Me too my mom's hippie friend sonny Sherman rip sonny!! Brought me American Beauty for my 13th birthday my teacher let me babysit for hot tuna tickets man I love all music but it was really specail.like a version slays everytime though
@dfleonard The Grateful Dead readily admitted that they had off nights and off songs. This organic, not always polished sound, was one component that made them so freaking awesome.

I was there 1st Box of Rain in like 18 years - the energy was substantial
I was there up front for this show. Thank you for the great memory!
I was fortunate enough to be there, and this is unforgettable. The crowd went absolutely insane throughout the whole song - the noise was deafening. Bobby was trying to do his 'short break' rap at the end, and you could tell that he was overwhelmed by the crowd.

i was there! this was my first dead concert. i was about 20 feet from the band and passed out between sets from the heat. what a great time!
I love this clip not only because of the historical moment but because you can really feel the crowd.
wherever your Spirit is now, Jerry, may he always be Bright!! You've given the world so much light and warmth with your music, that you will never be forgotten.
I remember this show. a bunch of us climbed up the wall and snuck in through a 2nd story window...tour was the only part of the 80s worth remembering.
macbrighid23 wow
I was there... wow, spring '86... and i was 18... thanks for the memories. : )
The joy of this crowd is palpable at this rare performance, and Phil's in great voice. Thanks for posting!!
without Jerry everything is "just a box of rain" :( Great Man has passed away so long ago... Jerry, your music make the whole world moved... With greetings to the surviving members of GD and all fans -- cheers from Poland!!
I regularly come back to this video. Brings tears to my eyes. The Philly crowd showing Phil such grate love.
My first show. I remember the electricity in that building when Phil sounded off! I still get goose bumps. And yes, the crowd WAS THAT LOUD!!
Got goosebumps re-living this one! Def a top tour memory of all time! 777 !!! Thanks for the share!
This song is so breautiful! Thanks PHIL!
I WAS THERE!!!!! Peace & Love (~})

I was there and it was my first Box of Rain and the place went nuts!

I was there as well. I miss Jerry.
Surely one of the happiest moments of Grateful Dead life.
"A box of rain will ease the pain
And love will see you through"

Brings tears to my eyes. Phil is a champ.
my favorite dead song

All time favorite Dead tune! Everytime I have felt REALLY down in my life, I have sung this to myself and feel right as rain.
The greatest band in the greatest concert venue ever.
That is a beautiful thing. The dead will never die ; )
The dead always loved that building.
Shows at the 'Rectum in Philly! Memories... fuzzy memories...! I was at this one.
this song makes me cry..
The LOVE Was OVER-FLOWING That Night At THE SPECTRUM~!!!!!!!~
Was at hampton right before this show where they broke it out. Crowd drowned out the band. Still get goosebumps listening to the show.
I'm almost 31, never did either. Finally saw them a few days ago for the 2009 tour. No Jerry, but a ton of fun. Fans were awesome, best group of people I have ever seen. All smiles, all dancing, all singing. Give it a try if they come to your area.
I saw the show the night before this one and was pissed when I heard I'd missed this. Thanks for putting it up so I could see it...a few years later.
WoW! These were the days, every concert was different, was like the ultimate jam session!
wow, it's such a nice treat to hear phil sing.
Nicely put. Further has come to St. Louis (hometown) a few times, and there is no other concert like them!
Phil recovered quickly when he started " ..to do for you.." instead of "to watch for you as.." but I mess it up there all the time too. One of my favorite songs of all time. Much love Phil.

Gives me goose bumps. So glad I caught the Warlocks shows at Hampton. :)
that crowd brings me back.....only saw a handful of shows all in hampton and they were everything they were said to be.........stood up close one time and saw all of terrapin stone sober it was tiiiight. Jerry really was the leader

paradox is just the way to describe such an incredible group
Love it.
The Dead lives on.
George Vreeland Hill
Awesome!!!!!! i love this band.
i got goosebumps. Not from the song - I usually prefer to listen to an LP or an mp3 than listen to a live recording - but from the LOVE in the crowd. Oh man, I wish I was alive to see these guys play live.
American Beauty was the first CD I ever owned. Box of Rain is a classic.
Phil sounds great here. Wish the quality was better. The crowd obviously loves it. Very slick, gotta love a box of rain.
WE used to chant, "Let Phil sing, let Phil sing!"
WooHooooooo
I caught MSG and Portland Maine on that one
Another chapter has closed. RIP brother you are already missed
@corn3rston3 dude what you said could make me cry. You perfectly summed it up. Very nice, thank you for being such a wise, genuine music lover, and understanding what music is really supposed to be and supposed to do for a person's soul.

amazing response for Phil!!
Never too late indeed. Peace be with you all.
There was nothing like going to a Grateful Dead concert!
Every dead crowd was a beautiful thing.

You never really see such a disrespectful crowd at a Dead show.
its never too late brother
Box of jewels. Thanks Dead.
good song. makes me wish i could go back to waking up hungover knowing not of where i was only wondering how i was going to make it home.
Phil wrote the music. Robert Hunter (of course) wrote the lyrics for a man whose father was dying (Phil specifically but really anyone in general).
It's a song of loss and hope.
I was there!
looking for the secret, and searching for the sound................never fade.....
There ain't NOTHIN' like a Grateful Dead show !!!
It was MSG, 11/15/91.(I'm such a geek but that was also the day that I passed my road test)
Me too my mom's hippie friend sonny Sherman rip sonny!! Brought me American Beauty for my 13th birthday my teacher let me babysit for hot tuna tickets man I love all music but it was really specail.like a version slays everytime though
