Most times when a famous person passes away, I'm sad that they died, just on a human level. This one though, it feels like losing an old friend. Of all the musicians I've seen play, nobody made me happier than Phil. He was joyous in his playing. And the work he's done for years to spread awareness for organ donation made real difference in peoples lives. Gonna go listen to Box of Rain and maybe cry.
Yeah, it's a strange human phenomenon that we can be so affected when a public figure passes away. I felt the same when Prine left us, although I did meet and talk to him a couple of times.
Man I feel the same, of all the musicians I've listened to over the years, Phil was always my favorite all around, I enjoyed every opportunity I had to see him. All of the songs seem sad now, I'm grateful for the dead, gone too soon no matter the time. Phil's philosophy, ethic, talent for bass and composition was singular and I'll miss the hell out of him.
Well, I hurt when Brent passed. Jerry passing turned my life upside down and depressed for atleast 4 or 5 years. Phil is the first musician since Jerry where the pain is so deep. I don't remember seeing him play since 2015, but not out of lack of want. He last came within 100 miles in early to mid 2000s, well, he was at a 3 or 4 day festival around 2009-2010, otherwise 500 miles was the next closest. I've been missing seeing him since 2015. Saw Phil and friends several times between 98 and 2009ish, as well as The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur with Bobby, but the Grateful Dead and Phil and Friends and later Family were the best. 2002 was great Other Ones leading into The Dead was very hot too. By 2004, I couldn't go see them because of some legal issues and shows were off limits unless in the state, but not around home turf. Dammit, not ready for what I knew would eventually happen. Thank you Phil, Jill, Grahame, and Brian (?). My head is still cloudy rn.
@@davidr1676 Would you still be as devoted to the Dead in retrospect if you knew for a fact that Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION were CIA operatives? And Capt. The longer I live I find that this old world just seems to get colder and colder and I am lonelier than ever . I'm just glad that I had the chance to exist during a time when there was just a little love and warmth , I remember how the world was mine just waiting for me , till I found out it was waiting to crush me every day , but the sound of this distant warmth and love somehow made it okay . Thank You Mr. Lesh for helping to make this big scarry world a little more close , I'll never forget . You know , it's funny how much has changed .
Absolutely. Not just riding the bass line in tune with the guitar players. But weaving his own way in and out of the melody. Providing accent and color. Giving depth and complexity for Jerry and Bob to play off.
OMG, just heard about this by seeing this in my feed. Goodbye Phil, you gave us so much music and joy. Our world is a better place for you and the Dead being in it with us.
Phil Lesh was one of the best and nicest people I have ever met. I got to sit on stage for many shows, and there was never a time I didn't see him smile. He was so genuine, and I miss him like everyone else here.
“Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there” Phil will you never be forgotten! I’ll always have the memories of growing up at Dead shows. Forever Grateful for you Phil Lesh! ⚡️💀⚡️🌹🌈💨
One of the biggest influences on bass for me and many others. I was crushed when i heard the news. Was hoping to see him next year in Las Vegas. RIP Phil! I'm sure you're rocking it in the afterlife with Jerry.
I am 60 years old and I never listened to the Grateful Dead until I was 54, I don't know why I never got into them - but after that I became a big fan of their music, their story is remarkable and the music is all one big song, man. Rest in Peace Phil and say hello to Ron, Brent, and Jerry!
"No one can be replaced in the hearts of those who love them, but I still feel the necessity to play - for those who come to dance and those who hope to find magic, communing together with friends and family." - Finale words in Phil's book "Searching for the Sound", referring to Jerry Garcia's death. Now it's up to us to play and dance and hope on and on and on ...
I read his book: Searching for the Sound of Music, my life with the Great full Dead. Great read into the life of the Dead. One of the best shows I ever saw was in July 1986 at the Akron Rubber Bowl. Tom Petty and the Heartvreakers opened up for the Dead and then Bob Dylan came out for a a few songs and jam'd with both bands What a Day!
Lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest.. Thank you Phil for all the amazing times and brilliantly improvised cosmic music that will never be surpassed. So I pour one out for our lost hero, knowing the Roses🌹won't be quite as Red with the Dead's backbone headed on up to the Promised land. "Such a long, long time to be gone And a short time to be there.." RIP🧑⚕🎸
I was impressed to learn of the various sound controls he commanded at his choice. From his bass he could even select which speakers to use, varying the acoustic relationship of his strings to the audience as he played along. Most people just stop at electronic tone modifications
As it is Eternally so, The masses will never ever understand or grasp the billions of lives that Phil has brought more Balance to A literal Saint, Sage, Seer, Mystical Druid His energy lives on
Box of rain, unbroken chain, wave to the wind, and if the shoe fits are my favorite Phil Lesh songs from the Greatfuldead,so many fun shows oh yeah broken arrow is another favorite of mine!! 🐸 Derek
RIP Phil Lesh, there was no other bassist like you, with your unorthodox note choices and commitment to improvisation. I remember shows at Roosevelt Stadium in the 70s where your bass literally made the earth shake!
R.I.P. Phil and thank you so very, very much for the joy your music brought and brings to me and so many others because their were times when feeling down but your music lifted my spirit. That you and your GD band mates have inspired and tutored other means that this music will continue and that cannot be said by other bands. . .. You were in a League of Your Own.
One of the greats. An original, redefined bass playing. I count Phil as one of a small handful of my most important musical mentors. I will continue learning from him as long as I play music. Thanks for everything, Phil. Fare thee well. ❤ ❤ ❤
phil lesh and jaco pastorious changed the way the electric bass was played and the way in which the instruments were designed and built. I can’t think of any other bass players who did that. The music was epic as well. rock on brother….
RIP Phil. His legacy is even more enormous than this overview. He founded the Rex foundation, which funded classical composers who wrote for enormous orchestras...such as Havergal Bryan, who typically wrote for 400 musicians!! These guys couldn't get support anywhere else. So Bless zphil Lesh and his all encompassing heart. He was so much more than a truly original bass player.
My Phil Story: I took my wife to see Phil Lesh & Friends and there in the lawns area, just laying on the ground at my feet, was a backstage pass for one of the opening acts. Sensing a miracle, I figured I was obligated to give it a try, and walked past security to the backstage area. I sat down on a bench in front of the cafeteria to see what would happen, and along comes Phil. I stood up to greet him with my camera in hand, and not knowing what to say, shook his hand and told him "Thanks for everything." He said "How about a picture?" and I leaned in close with my arm extended for a selfie (before phone selfies were a thing). Suddenly, Phil says "Wait a minute, somethings wrong here! Security!!" And a security guard that was walking past stepped over. I thought I was busted and getting kicked out, but Phil says, "Would you take our picture please?" and handed her my camera and put his arm around me. It seemed that Phil must have recognized the pass wasn't mine and was just playing a joke with me. That snapshot became a valued treasure of mine that I kept close for many years. What a great friend he was! Thanks Phil, for everything!
I spent the whole day walking/hiking in the park. East coast. Saw the news around 5PM and there was live music at the park. Requested Dead. He played Feels Like A Stranger
Just the best band such a great bassist, great musician. A sad loss, but the music lives on and will forever. Bless you man, you were part of something that changed my life. So he's gone but a box of rain will always Phil. Thanks
Saw them in 1970 They had 1 drummer Billy, & Pigpen was on keyboards Cactus Steve Miller Grateful Dead Jimi Hendrix May 1970 Temple Stadium Phila, Pa RIP Phil
Thank You Phil. You and the boys changed my life for the better. You were a gift to so many of us whom you touched. Fair you well, we love you more than words can tell.
….” A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through…”
Peace be with you.
"And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair,
Such a long long time to be gone,
and a short time to be there."
And with your spirit.
Look out of any window…
Maybe you'll find direction around some corner where its been waiting

Going home, going home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
I love you but Jesus loves you the best an I bid you goodnite goodnite goodnite. Peaceful rest Phil.
Bless you…
Whenever I hear that one, it makes me weep like a baby. Particularly when their harmonies were right on the money!
That is the last song I heard Jerry sing. Now Phil and Jerry are jamming again.
The Dead saved my life as a teenager. Losing Phil hurts worse than losing Jerry or Brent for some reason. I'm gutted.
RIP, Phil. A life well lived.
I don’t feel like I lost him … he just went home… thanks Phil! Godspeed!
Jerry has his bass player now....
Unbroken chain.
Hang in there brother. This is a tough loss for me too…peace
Grateful Dead is where my drug addiction started, thank you for the joy.
Man went to his grave having helped to put many a smile on many a face....Well done friend, RIP.......

Feel the same my friend. With every loss the world gets a bit colder and lonelier. NFA 🥀
Thanks for the long, strange trip. RIP Phil.
I always felt that Phil Lesh was the greatest bass player ever. He took playing the bass guitar to heights never achieved before or since.
I agree. My top five in rock are Lesh, Casady, Bruce, John Paul Jones, and McCartney. In that order.
Agree. He was the best. Searching for the secret, listening for the sound. 💕 🥀
Absolutely. Not just riding the bass line in tune with the guitar players. But weaving his own way in and out of the melody. Providing accent and color. Giving depth and complexity for Jerry and Bob to play off.
He changed my life, truly. Thanks Phil.
Among the best bass players in the world..Genius player..R.I.P. Phil.🍄
You Know My Love Will Not Fade Away!

Phil Lesh was one of the best and nicest people I have ever met. I got to sit on stage for many shows, and there was never a time I didn't see him smile. He was so genuine, and I miss him like everyone else here.
