Thanks mate!. You're probably the only adequate person on UA-cam who uses Z zeroing touch sensor properly. The other freaks all over the place are obsessed with use of the silly "touch plate thickness" parameter whereas we only need to know a delta between the tip of the initial either tool or probe (whatever hits the stock Z0 datum first) and all the offsets of every next tool used in the machining sequence.

You did an amazing job with going through all things necessary man! Thanks a bunch also, since I'm about to reach the point of setting this up on my own DIY CNC machine :-)

Thank you! I really tried to get out to like a teen minutes video but there was kinda a lot to cover. I guess with a script and less rambling that would have worked ^^

@@UniquelymadeHi, I used your script but I have a problem. I set the zero tool, zeroed the surface of the processed material, then went to zero tool setter. when changing the tool and zeroing, the tool ends up with a value of approximately +220,000 and so on with each another tool. Can you help?

Good video, but as you pointed out the machine bed and the spindle are earthed, so you don't need to attach the probe earth lead to the machine, just clip the hot wire onto the plate or tool length probe and off you go. And as you have gone to the trouble of isolating the tool length probe, you could leave that permanently wired, which means you only have to connect up the touch plate... this can now have a permanent connection so no messing around with crocodile clips and no possibility of forgetting to connect it. (just cont leave it anywhere that it can trigger the probing input.) :-)
I use VB scripts capture x and y per job I take z as being the machine bed in CAM so I don't run into the issue of wanting to use a datum that I just milled away. That said i tend to mill mostly wood - so a piece of stock that 1/2 a mm thicker than it should be does not cause a problem, ali...not so much. this approach helps minimise the chance of the live tool coming into contact with the the bed or fixture.

Great video! Could you do one with what youve learned from building your CNC and do differently if you would do it again? I'm also intressted in the end or current cost of this project.

Interesting video and well detailed. However...Tried that probing wizard and the version might be different from yours, on mine the z height probing returns stupid values (like -8952...) and is overall really crappy buggy shit, which version did you use? Or maybe it has to do with the mach 3 version you're using(using the latest personnally) Same goes for the auto tool zero script you linked, after probing the z axis wants to go down crashing in the probe instead of going to safe z, lol...
Other than that, keep up the good work, you craft nice things.

so, i have a 4-pin touch off probe with over travel alarm (two pins for probe, and two for over travel) How did you set your probe up in mach3? i see a ton of options in the configuration window, but they are all named, and none are touch off probes or whatever

So basically your first tool, the one you found zero with, will be the starting point, and all the other tools are just different Z offsets of the tool 0.

So everything works great except for one thing. Before and after the tool change the M6 routines (M6start and M6end) slowly jog at 50mm/m to the X and Z machine 0. How do I increase this feed rate so it doesn't take an eternity? What kind of code do I edit in the files?

    • @Uniquelymade

That probably means your motor cables are not shielded. You need to either move the probe cable away from them are get done optical isolation on the probe cable / some filtering
