No dry scalp & those ponytails stayed in for at least a week or two (nice & moist). We didnt have a variety of scarfs back then so my mother used a clean pair of panties as a scarf.

And I found a jar of the blue magic coconut grease, I said I was gonna start back using this. I'm glad the store was out cause I would have for sure brought it. I went back twice too😂
@@setapartaay925 You better stop playing and use that grease lol I know for me, especially the coconut, grows my hair really fast, and I have less breakage and shedding, I love it
Guurrrrlllll!!!! Grease is the truth!! Back in my day we had big beautiful fros, thick edges, long pressed hair. Simple!! These days, naturalists and natural hair companies have overcomplicated things. I have modified my regimen today but it's still simple. I added conditioner and a leave in plus my grease....that's it. If you use grease, you must!!! you must!! you must!! use a clarifying shampoo!! Co washing ain't gone get it.
I think one should use dish washing liquid to strip the greese out and then use a hydrating shampoo to make sure the hair is completely clean if necessary. Then do a moisturizing conditioner. Otherwise one is going to use up all their shampoo
True facts! Is it just me or is EVERYTHING over complicated these days, especially regarding being healthier. Keto, vegan, pescatarian, rice water, aloe plants, blah blah blah. Like damn how were our parents able to grow their hair or be healthy?!?!?🤔
I've been telling people for years that we direct start having all the breakage, edges gone and hairlines. We used blue magic and royal crown I had bra strap length hair until I got my first relaxer as a child and had bad burns all over my head. I just left the relaxed alone and I'm natural and only use blue magic, water and leave in conditioner. Done. Natural hair products is a business like all others do they have to make the others the boogie man to sell their products. Let's grow our hair back y'all!
I concur! For the last two weeks I’ve been using water, leave in conditioner and Blue Magic with Indian Hemp grease. I Immediately saw the difference in my hair. It was so very soft and shiny! I had bought curling cream and tried it but it didn’t work as good as the grease so I found my receipt and took it back to the store
So nobodies mamas used pink lotion before the grease? Or was that just my mama... hair was even more moisturized than just with water and grease... girl put a leave in on before putting the grease on each section also allows you to use less grease... which means less grease everywhere else
Mine absolutely did! I thought it was so funny when the natural hair community "discovered" the LOC LCO method. Columbus much? 🤭😆 I kid I kid lol! But seriously, that was always how my hair got done. That method and braided up for the week or pony tails that only needed "touching up" midweek.
The old school stuff still works and always will. Those beautiful 60's and 70's soul train fros was grease and a pick. The least amount of stuff you put on your natural hair the better.
People were also using baby powder....and now look at the effects! Petrolium(the main ingredient in 'grease') is harmful to black women, fertillity wise. This was proven years ago. I just wish we could do a mass suit!
I was a water and grease girl. My mom would wash me and my sister's hair leave it wet and then go in with the grease. Royal Crown and blue magic was the truth.
My grandma used the green Dax on my hair when I was a little girl. No water, just straight up Dax. My hair was long, thick and down to my mid back. I got my first relaxer at the age of eight and my hair hasn't been the same since.
It’s sad they felt the need to perm our hair as children. I still get at my moms like why mommy! Lol. Our hair would be down our butts today had they not. Kinky hair GROWSSS!!! Any way, I’m glad we are finally waking up and treating our hair better.
My mom use to do the same. My hair was down my back. Started going to the salon and trying different products and now my hair won’t grow past shoulder length
My mom used a bowl to dip her brush into. 😂 Now we don't use brushes, combs, grease and we wonder why the gel our hair isn't retaining length! Girl bye!!
After growing out my relaxer, I had lost my edges- started back putting grease, mixed with sulfur 8 and tar and they are growing back. Also, taking biotin and praying over my hair. I am 48 years old and tired of stressing over this.
Grease and water. Had super long hair as a kid. Shampoo, no conditioner. Once a month, hot oil treatment. Mom would hot comb my hair to dearh. It was still long and healthy.
Same! I had so much hair my mom only washed it once a YEAR...no lie. She only pressed it on Easter and it was to my butt. It still grows fast now but its not the same as when mama was combing it😂
Wow yes. One night at work I asked a coworker does she use a leave in conditioner. She said no. She said she just shampoos then regular conditions and that's it! She is Caucasian though. But still I was fascinated that she only does 2 steps! After that I was on a mission to use less product in my hair! I got it did to 3 and sometimes 4!
Yes. She used water, pink oil moisturizer, then grease. Idk why I forget that. My hair was down my back as a child. Now as a natural, my hair is ........it’s..........nevermind. Lemme go get some of those blue jars🏃🏽♀️ right now!
Honestly, sometimes I'm like "who came up with all this LCO, LOC etc.?" A couple months ago, I was actually considering going back to grease. My mother never used Blue Magic in my hair but she used African Pride (that minty/strong scent with bits of herbs or whatever right in there).
I use softee.Yep. i interchange Indian hemp, mango, and coconut. I'm starting to go back to grease too. It made my bun shine and lay right. I rediscovered by accident and so glad I did
Mom used warm water in a cup dip the brush in it and brushed my hair then put the grease in it twisted it up it lasted for a whole week...my sisters and I got our hair combed every Sunday night...and this is what I did for my girls and now my grandchild
My mom did the same thing--Sunday night, cup of warm water and the green Ultra Sheen hair grease. Only difference was she used a medium toothed comb and a wide toothed comb, not a brush. Hair was shiny, laid and lasted a whole week. 👍🏾
I learned this real quick! When I was just using raw Shea butter and water. My hair came out moist and the curl was bette. I believe these natural hair products have too many chemicals and it’s stripping the hair. I’m learning less is better and what’s cheap works better too.

These are some of the grandfathered products that get no respect in the “natural” hair community. When I was attending hair events, people would comment on my hair then asked what my routine was. When I mentioned greasing my hair, I swear the whole darn room got silent. Chile.....I still grease my hair and have bomb results. So happy you did this tutorial. Wow. A few days ago, I was talking to my Mom about my natural hair woes and the desire for it to grow long. My Mom said when you were a little girl, I just used to put grease on your hair; plait it in big plaits and your hair was long down your back. Then, I came across this Channel. So that's confirmation of what I need to do!
I can’t understand why black women will brag about how their hair “used” to be soooo long when they were younger n then I ask well what did you use when u were younger?....GREASE!!!! So true about the oils...I've been oiling down for years and couldn't understand why my hair was Sooooo dry...Now I use water, a leave in and grease!! Mannnnnn this is the truth...Less shedding and healthier looking hair!

I was definitely raised on water and grease for my hair. It works well for me, but it’s too much work when it comes to how it gets all over your pillows, the headrest in you car and your couch. The worst part about it all is somehow it ends up all over your face and neck by the end of the day.
As an ingredient snob, Blue Magic has leave ins and other greases with slightly better ingredients. I use the Mango butter leave in or Herbal Complex leave in and seal with the Castor Oil or Indian Hemp grease. I use them when my expensive products are gone and I ain't got the funds to reup. Lol
Girl, that grease side look real good!! It has more volume and more hang time. Super shiny too!! Water is the ultimate moisturizer, so that grease just locked it all in.😂😍Excellent video!!
@@noreehix5714 I use leave in spray, almond oil or castor or avocado oil, and Hawaiian silky on my kids hair. Nothing else. I am loving the almond oil most lately. It depends on the hair and the climate you live in. I have to change up when I move to different states. But the Hawaiian silky has stayed part of the formula. It is light and lasts the edges without gel or getting hard.
I haven’t been able to retain length in my nape since I was a kid. I kept trying to figure out why I had long hair as a child but can’t grow long hair now. It hit me, my mom used grease! I started using blue magic on my nape a month ago and the bald spots are filling in. I’m so mad I listened to the “natural community” and stopped using grease. Oils/butters don’t lock moisture into my high porosity hair at all. I’ve tried every natural/oil butter, LCO/LOC and 20 minutes later my hair is thirsty. Now I apply a leave in and some grease and my hair stays moist for a week. My hair also likes silicones and I use sulfates. I learned to stop listening to people and listen to my hair instead.
When i was little i used a whole jar of grease on my hair thinking that's how the girls with relax hair got they're hair straight. I still use grease for my scalp.
I went back to grease 4 yrs ago. I use grease on my wash day and with a leave in to re-moisturize, particularly in the fall/winter. My favs are Softee mango or African shea butter grease, Kuza Indian Hemp grease or the blue Blue Magic grease.
It's so crazy I'm watch this because I just went back to using grease! LoL. It's some inexpensive mango grease from softee but it work good on me and my childrens hair.
Water and grease for me when I was growing up. I wondered how it became a bad thing because it didn't damage my hair as a child. When I recently went natural, my mom reminded me of what really works and not to go broke trying to accomplish something simple.
Me personally I could NEVER use just water and grease. My high porosity hair needs way more than just water to moisturize it lol. I need to use great quality leave ins or creams then seal all that great moisture in with the Nature's blessings grease

Well, how did u wash ur hair? U must use water cause it's needed for cleansing. It's also a chemical that does change the molecular breakdown of the hair's texture for refreshing it.
Joycelyn Matthews-Bowens You took it extremely literal lol. Of course my mother washed my hair. But it was only once every two weeks and we always avoided water in between.
braids, beads and aluminum foil...thanks for taking us back to simple and effective. 😁 water, pink lotion and grease (Dax, Blue Magic, various brands) were all we had/used growing up - everybody's hair was down their back 😊👍🏼💯😊 I'm a #HairProductConnoisseur, but i have never left grease alone. i use b&b because its lighter than most other greases, but i remember my mom & aunt warming dax for easier spreadability and to make it stretch across all the heads in the house. boys & girls - we *ALL* got our scalps and hair greased 🤣😂 our shampoos surely contained sulfates and im confident our conditioners included silicones, but somehow our hair was healthy, strong and long.
It's sad that we can't even share between generations.. Older ladies have been saying this for years but y'all will listen to anyone else accept for us
went back to mainly using grease and water on my natural hair a couple of years ago and it’s the best decision i’ve ever made! natural definitely doesn’t have to be complicated, or expensive. i will splurge a lil on a good deep conditioner, but everything else is pretty basic and my hair ain’t mad 😂

My mom definitely used the grease/water combo and my hair was thriving. I've been back on the blue magic train for about 2 months now. I do recommend putting your leave-in on first.
Yes my mother used water and pink lotion grease i can't remember what she used my sister used Blue magic on my niece my hair and she used Crown royal too
@KWU KWU It doesn't have to be; it shouldn't even NEED to be. I watched SheRea's video because it fascinated me. I'm trying to endure 70-plus percent humidity, going into a new job.
My mom and aunties used water on the brush. But not much because wet hair and going outside was taboo. Also as we get older we shuned water because it made our hair draw up. - which was terrifying! We have come a long way with our relationship with our hair.
I went natural over 20 years ago and when I did that the only thing on the market I could use that was in budget was Blue Magic products and water. I've been using this method ever since and my hair will last three or four days versus using cream and I'm reapplying daily
I'm 50y/o & I have never stopped. Grease is the Truth!!! Spending unnecessary $$$ on all these products doesn't make sense. Old school Blue magic is the way too go. Thanks for this video and 👍
My mom used water and Dax green grease on our hair growing up and my hair was quite long until I relaxed for the first time at age 13. Now that I've returned to natural, I love creams and gels but maybe there was really something to the grease thing? Maybe a little on the ends as a sealer after the LCO or LOC method? When I was in high school in the late 70’s (don’t judge me for my age 🥴) when I wanted a curly Afro, after i washed my hair while it was wet, I would braid and twist my hair. Tie it up and the next day I would open the braids and my hair would be curly and soft and silky. It would be moisturized . I have 4c hair by the way. Grease and water works! She used way tooooo much grease! You can’t use it like u do these creams and oils. Have to apply differently. The curl definition lasts a few days and is not greasy if u do it right! I use a light grease on my daughter’s hair, and she also has 4c hair. She is a teenager and her definition lasts at least 3 days or more if she ties it up.
I must have really dry hair if that's the case cause I layer the grease on my hair and it don't stick nowhere else other than my hair strands. It even melts into my scalp. So all these greasy problems everyone talking about, that foreign to me.
My mother used to have a cup of water where she would dip the brush in the water..we didn't have the luxury of a spray bottle. She would use crown and ultra sheen.
Merry Christmas SheRea!! Both sides look great but the grease side was voluminous! I use grease in my hair from time to time. I mix mine with a bit of JBCO. Please experiment more with grease.
I had very bad cradle cap as a baby and my hair was constantly falling out. my grandmother did my hair with grease until she went blind when I turned 5. Even then she continued on her hair, which fell to her butt. Since, I’ve been known for my thick head of hair. Grease is definitely the truth
@@anialafrance7492 I've not had a hard time getting our hair clean after using Blue Magic. How hard it is to remove likely depends upon each individual's scalp and hair and also upon how much Blue Magic is used. Both products are Sally's versions of the much more expensive Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Shampoo and Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm. The products are easy to find, they're not expensive, and they work. Hope that helps.
This is such a good video perspective on grease. I just started using grease because of the cold cold 🥶 weather where I live and let my tell you my hair is shiny, bouncy, soft and on top of my leave in and moisturisers it adds a lot of slip and I use literally a fingertip on each section. a little goes a long way!

Tilly Yes. I have thick hair strands as well, and doing the lco method with oil wasn't cutting it. I do have to use a light leave in (Giovanni Direct), but I use a heavy cream (Cream of Nature Coconut Curling Cream) and the coconut oil blue magic. I keep my hair in mini twists and spray it with rose water and glycerin every night. My hair loves it.
I went back to using grease on my scalp a little over a year ago. I find that using grease has been a great way to help maintain moisture for my natural hair. I found that my scalp is not as itchy or dry, I don't have dandruff but my scalp was still itchy & dry when using oils. I do protective styling during the colder months & have found my hair was extremely dry after taking down my braids or mini twists even though I moisturized the h**l out of my hair. But since adding grease back into my hair regiment, my hair is healthy, happy & moisturized. I will not be going back to oils anytime soon with the exception of taking down my twistouts or braidouts 💕

Oil and water for my daughter's curly hair. Tried all the expensive creams and gels to define curls. Fine when soaking wet, once dry Autumn leaves plus snow storm. African Pride growth oil on wet hair looks good wet and dry.
I really enjoyed and appreciated this video. I have been listening to the natural hair community and I stopped using hair grease on my hair but I noticed that without grease, I have a lot more breakage than I have ever had in my life. I have started to incorporate grease back into my routine. I think that if you used the leave in conditioner, a moisturizer and then a light layer of hair grease, that twist out would be even more beautiful 😍! Thank you for sharing.
i used to be ingredient conscious but now i use vo5 as a leave in suave or aussie sulfate shampoo and conditioner and grease as a sealant. i also use an oil mix before applying grease so it can apply easier. my goal is to have tailbone length hair and i just want to keep my regimen simple and inexpensive.
If you do a clay mask about once a month, that should "detox" your hair cuticles and help keep it healthy if you're ever concerned about not getting all the layers of "plastics" from your hair from the other products. It also turns your definition game waaaaay up. Most people use ACV, bentonite clay, and water. But I like aloe vera juice, bentonite clay, and castor oil. My hair feels so clean and soft afterwards and none of that ACV smell. ^.^
I have my blue magic, just dont know what to do with it🤷🏿 But I'm tired of spending a fortune on Cantu, shea moisture, maui, all that....Hunnny!!! Imma figure out my best moisturizer, and use my grease
I was thinking about going back to grease. I've tried all this new stuff Olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, etc. To get the results they are talking about. I have an ichy, dry and flaky scalp. I was doing it every other day, switched to every day and then once a week thinking I'm doing too much. My hair is pretty when I first do the LOC method but as soon as it dries. My hair is dry. I have tons of products trying different methods. Truthfully the only thing that has ever worked for me was grease. My hair was thick, pretty and moisturized. That's what I get for listening to all this new age stuff. It's not for everyone. Sometimes it's something cheap and simple that works the best

I’m old school so I’m here for it I do feel like the natural community is about money simply bcus this is all my mom used on my hair and I always had a head full of hair. Thanks for showing!
Less is more I’ve learned. I had hair about your length 3-4 years ago and wore it in literally just box braids up until not too long ago, and my hair is to my butt now. I hardly used any products/oils and my scalp was less dry then than now that I wear my hair out and use the lco method and oil my scalp everyday. My hair wasn’t healthy necessarily during those years, it was definitely dry but SIS did it growwwwww
I agree. You can use the lco method, but instead of the "o," make it "g" for grease. The "o" part is supposed to the the sealant, and grease does a better job, imo.
I HAVE to use grease in order for my hair to act right periodTT. I'm ol school anyway so all this new stuff ain't all what it's cracked up to be.
Cowashing definitely won’t get that ish out lol
I think one should use dish washing liquid to strip the greese out and then use a hydrating shampoo to make sure the hair is completely clean if necessary. Then do a moisturizing conditioner. Otherwise one is going to use up all their shampoo
Coco-Butta i agree!
Hunny! Talk about it! Simplicity is where it’s at. Our hair was just as healthy then as it is now with shampoo, conditioner and hair grease.
True facts! Is it just me or is EVERYTHING over complicated these days, especially regarding being healthier. Keto, vegan, pescatarian, rice water, aloe plants, blah blah blah. Like damn how were our parents able to grow their hair or be healthy?!?!?🤔
Shh don’t tells these heaux. Soon my grease is gonna be expensive because you’re spilling the secret!

For real!

You Betta say it.
Exactly!!! Best of both world. Leave in and grease. Get some grease that's made with olive or Coconut oil and bam!

For sure! This was just an experiment lol
That pink lotion used to KO my hair 😭😭 I still get PTSD when I see it

I was definitely raised on water and grease for my hair. It works well for me, but it’s too much work when it comes to how it gets all over your pillows, the headrest in you car and your couch. The worst part about it all is somehow it ends up all over your face and neck by the end of the day.

Right there with you.
I must have really dry hair if that's the case cause I layer the grease on my hair and it don't stick nowhere else other than my hair strands. It even melts into my scalp. So all these greasy problems everyone talking about, that foreign to me.

I’m sure I won’t use as much with a leave in. Thanks for watching!
I don’t understand how people say that once you add grease you wont be able to re moisturize your hair?? When i can do that just fine when using grease on my hair because usually after some days my hair eats it up anyways so I just wet and reapply 😂🤷🏾♀️ to each its own
It personally coats my hair. I think it depends on your strand thickness or density
@@SheReaDelSoltrue my stands are really thick and my hair is dense but theyre also greedy 🤣 i can only use heavier products cuz anything too light would be gone in a day lmao
@@jjayjae_ i spray my hair everyday as well 😭
Tilly Doing that + using grease really changed the game for me. I'm never going back.
I go in with a leave in spray, a cream then seal with grease and my hair stays moisturized ✨
*HAPPY HOLIDAYS MY SISTER!!♥♥♥♥♥ Water and grease is old school and that's all I use.*
It’s really a gem!!
The blue Afro Sheen is the deal for me.*
Thanks for the tip
My mom used to use only the green Dax on my hair. My hair grew soooooooo much until I changed up and used natural hair methods. They worked though before I even did this.
I use Hair Grease on my daughter and pink lotion and my daughter's hair is down to middle of her back and it's thick. I grew up my mom used the same hair products I use Hair mayonnaise,Hot oil treatments, blue magic, oil moisturizer and that's pretty much about it oh yeah and Dr miracle grows your hair fast to that's about it
I prefer grease. I been telling people for years. My hair is never dry. And you put it on the skin and your hair will grow like crazy!!!!! No more alopecia (caused by dry scalp)
BlueMagic will break record sales this new year. As all of the bougie hair Queens, revert back to Grease. I am one of those bougie hair Queens!! Lol
i used to be ingredient conscious but now i use vo5 as a leave in suave or aussie sulfate shampoo and conditioner and grease as a sealant. i also use an oil mix before applying grease so it can apply easier. my goal is to have tailbone length hair and i just want to keep my regimen simple and inexpensive.
I agree with incorporating clay washes
I have my blue magic, just dont know what to do with it🤷🏿
But I'm tired of spending a fortune on Cantu, shea moisture, maui, all that....Hunnny!!! Imma figure out my best moisturizer, and use my grease
This is how I do my daughters hair. I’ve used natural hair products and her hair doesn’t stay moisturized but with grease it’s fine almost all week.
AreEnnAyee dope!
Sulfur 8 hair grease is the only thing that works on my scalp to combat dryness and dandruff and ppl are doing doo gro mixed with sulfer 8 shampoo
Sulfur 8 is a real throwback!
I seen that they are mixing the doo gro grease with the sulfur 8 Grease
Try as I am teatree shampoo and conditioner line along with the oil in the blue packaging....my youngest sister used to have to use sulfer 8 grease and shampoo for the same issue (dry and alot of dandruff) and that as I am line got her right her dandruff and dryness is under control now
Your hair looks great! I used blues, water, and gel to get the perfect twist out and it last for a whole week it stays moisturized all week also. I’m old school so I’m here for it I do feel like the natural community is about money simply bcus this is all my mom used on my hair and I always had a head full of hair. Thanks for showing!
Mrs. Coleman you are welcome
Update: got blue magic grease and african pride grease and hair FEELS WAAAY BETTER. I am team hair grease for life now.
Also, the lco side is more hydrated & the grease side is more moisturized...the key is balancing moisture and hydration.
I agree. You can use the lco method, but instead of the "o," make it "g" for grease. The "o" part is supposed to the the sealant, and grease does a better job, imo.
This was a great comparison! Who knew grease could give good results, and it was more elongated than the LCO side. Hair is poppin!😍
Poppin!!!
Say it all the time girl, moisturize your hair before adding grease and you should be fine :)
Right!
I HAVE to use grease in order for my hair to act right periodTT. I'm ol school anyway so all this new stuff ain't all what it's cracked up to be. Some of these so called natural hair products make my hair shed when I put it on my hair🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. I love blue magic, we go a long ways back. She's my life long friend⭐💛⭐😘
She and I may be besties for the new year
It helps tremendously to not have to use so much of stylers/gels and the hair style last so much longer with grease. Won't be dry looking.
Thanks for that tip
What do you use to shampoo it out ? I tried using it and it wouldn’t come out.
@Aaliye S So do you not use any gel in your twistouts or braidouts? If so, how long does these styles last?
The way your hair looking I will definitely revisit this product
