    Hello there. Let me tell you what I managed to gleam off the store owner about these paints. Pardon me for a moment because I'm typing this out on my mobile in the MRT/tube/train. It was a surprise to me actually. I'll tell you as much as I can because my Chinese language is not native level.
    Anyway, I asked the store owner about these paints and what does he categorise them as, because I had doubts. He was quite dodgy on what to classify them...but he did say that Paul Rubens (PR) obtained their pigments from his dad? (so, they knew what quality of paints PR is producing). He said that while the pigments can't be compared to Schmincke and WN, it's still of a medium to good quality pigments. They have some of the Taiwan's professional (UMAE Macaron Series) quality paints inserted into PR's palette...look for the pastel ones. He also did mentioned that in terms of pigment qualities and price, it should be on par or better than Mission Gold's. Holbein is on the higher range compared to theirs and Mission Gold. I think the rest is how much binder, additives, brightener or other paint making agents they used mix into the pigments.
    He also mentioned that PR's paint making process is more towards the western style of paint making (unlike Holbein, Turner, Mijello, ShinHan, PWC, or other East Asian brand names)...don't ask me what's the difference, I'm not in that level of paint research yet. PR invited?/requested?/hired? Blockx's Owner?/Paint makers? to train the PR people in the art of paint making. I guess that's where the skills comes from.
    As for light fastness...he dodged me again LOL...so, you'll have to test it out yourself. OK, that's as far as I can type out on the phone for now, I'll add on and edit out any mistakes when I get back home. Hope it helps.

    For the price point these seems like a pretty decent set, though that purple makes me sad 😪 The earth tones are curious. The burnt sienna looks like a burnt umber and the burnt brown looks like a raw umber. However I've been obsessed with granulating earth tones lately so I'm sure I could find use for that red ochre hehe. I'm a bit surprised with how few reds and pinks are in the set since so many palettes include so many of them. Thanks for sharing this with me and Oto. I've heard a lot about it lately.

    I have soooo many paints, these are tempting me only because I have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome.) What I'm really interested is the sparkly set, because apparently my desire to acquire all the sparkly things is even stronger than my regular GAS. After two or three months of research, I decided on buying the Paul Rubens 24 set of watercolors as my starting out set in watercolor painting. The quality is great, the pigments are really smooth and highly pigmented. I liked that 20 of the 24 colors were single pigment, another sign of quality that also makes mixing colors easier as they are less likely to get muddy. And finally I loved the packaging and colors. Paul Ruben wins hands down over any of the top expensive brands of professional artists paints when it comes to packaging. I was immediately drawn to both of the colors; the girly pink and the really pretty turquoise blue, and I loved the really soft shammy cloth. I also loved that I was able to buy a block of good quality Paul Ruben watercolor paper that is acid free and 100% cotton, in a beautiful real leather folder that matches the pink color of the watercolor tin palette. I really want to buy the Paul Ruben metallic colors, I have heard great reviews about them. For anyone who has not seen their latest products you are going to be even more impressed! They have come out with these glittery small palettes of 12 colors in a beautiful more vibrant pink than the regular pink palette, and a gorgeous more vibrant blue-green turquoise glitter, these cases are beautiful. Also, Paul Ruben's has come out with these beautiful watercolor paper pads in a regal shiny dark navy blue that almost looks metallic, and a beautiful shiny yellow gold. The watercolor pads in the new colors also come in different sizes and even a round size. Their packaging is so beautiful it makes me want to own everything they put out. I am so glad that their quality matches the quality and beauty of their packaging. We are after all trying to create our idea of beauty, as artists it only makes sense that we would be more drawn to beautiful products.

    This was super informative, and I'm glad that these colours have an actual light-fastness rating. It really matters to me, that companies inform the consumers about their products, and these paints also have pigment information. Like you say, these look great for the price. Thank you. I just received my set of these paints from amazon. This is the first set of paints I've had that didn't come from a dollar store. I'm very excited. I also bought some Holbein gouache. I bought the set of 12 and I bought the CMYK set. Your enthusiasm for color has inspired me to explore different approaches to color mixing and to learn about color theory. Although I've only been making visual art for a year now, I can feel my inner nerd waking up to it in a big way.

    I bought the 48 set. Some of the label's adhesive stuck to the pigment, paticularly the Burned Sienna and Burned Brown. It does affect the rewetability of the paints but doesn't affect the color. Just a heads up to those who might have similar experience regarding the adhesive.

    it seems they are using blue wool scale based on the fact that most lightfast is 8, and BW is an 8 scale system. Are you planing to do your own lightfastnes test ? I would be really curious to see an update after someone would put them on south facing widow for a few months :D On one hand i do realize great products cost way less to produce than what they are sold for, but every time there is a new company on a horizon I like to wait till someone confirms the "honesty" (for lack of better word) of their lightfastness rating.

    If you live in a major U.S. East Coast city and enjoy urban sketching you know you need a black or a dark grey … we don’t live in the Mediterranean with blue & orange buildings; we need palette colors for our surroundings.
    Aside from that, I think it’s a good all around color set no matter where one may live there are colors for your surroundings

    I’m just catching up to some of your super helpful vids. Since in the last couple of years I’ve become more knowledgeable myself about the various wc brands and pigments used, after watching this particular video, I plan to get this set at some point to keep and use for travel or whenever go-to set. I’m not hurting for any wc sets, to be sure. I purchased a Schmincke “Special Edition” set about 6 mos ago of 12 half pans and am beginning to really love it (becoming a fan of their Perylene Green.) Besides the paint, it came in a box the shape of their half pans and included a travel brush, Schmincke apron, a small wc paper block, a coffee cup, brush cleaner and loofah sponge…but it was $105! I also have a DS Ultimate Mixing set and a starter set of Holbein 5 ml 12 colors…typical colors, a QOR High Chroma set….a fave, and a number of other artist and student quality sets. But the quality of this PR set combined with the price is a no-brainer. Thanks so much!

    See the Frugal Crafters review of the Pretty Excellent watercolor set. As of today it is under 15 dollars on Amazon. Lindsey, the Frugal Crafter, says the watercolors are just as good as Reuben's watercolors and, in fact, may actually be a knock off of, and from, Reuben's.

    Another fantastic video! These look wonderful.
    I was curious if you've tried the Daniel Smith Quinophthalone Yellow, PY138? I came across it the other day and was sort of surprised that I hadn't heard it mentioned before. The Daniel Smith website and their youtube video from 2010 calls it a "Limited Edition" color and yet it's still available at Jackson's and all the major retailers.
    I checked the handprint site and he mentions PY138 but it was years ago before the Daniel Smith Quinopthalone Yellow appeared. At the time the only single pigment was available from Rowney Artists as "Permanent Yellow." It looks like a good replacement for Aerolin? I just think it'd be interesting to see it compared to other yellows in that field. Also because I'm really curious about this other, other "QUIN"
    Thanks again!

    hello there.
    ive been asking this question around on youtube seems no one answer me im sad.
    is pastel watercolor is just gouache paint?
    as watercolor supposedly to be highly transparent,
    and gouache distinctively different fr watercolor for its opacity, because of added chalk?
    thank you

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 років тому

      Hi, Pastel colors can come in normal watercolors as well. And you get bright colors in gouache as well. Gouache on the whole is more opaque than watercolors. They can have chalk, talk or titanium dioxide added to create the opacity.

  • @fbwmy

    Exactly what I think about this set of paints. Rubens has many earthtone colors, but only few of them are relatively good, for example: A335 - Indian Red - PR101 (actually this one looks quite like real burnt sienna, not as orange as regular PR101 version) ; and their "Burnt sienna (A333/A334)" is actually a mixture of PR101 and PBr7 . Most of their eathtone colors are really "gluey" and not saturated ecough. But, their Turquoise Light (E292, PB36) is the best , and their China Red (B229, PR254,very very staining) is quite intense, also their Permanent Orange (B254, PO73, very very staining) is even more saturated than Daniel Smith's PO73.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 років тому

      ohhhh you're making me want to try more of their colors :D

    • @fbwmy
      @fbwmy 6 років тому +2

      ///^_^/// Please do! I don't have all their colors, but only 24 set in pans and some loose tubes. However, I think all their single-pigmented, bright and saturated colors are worth trying. I also love their blacks, which are very intense and good for black-and-white drawing, even manga. But, their raw sienna (B263, PY42), pozoulli red (B318, PR101, as you said), cassel umber (B260, PBr7, a cold-tone dark brown, a great shade but...) are the worst three, in my judgment, so far. They are not pigmented enough, and I feel very difficult to achieve a smooth look - I even tried to apply them with a tiny little bit of rubbing alcohol to reduce the "glueiness", but this still does not work.

      X. LI I bought a set on Amazon and have been trying to find out how to purchase more colors. Do you know where you can buy additional colors or tubes?

    • @fbwmy
      @fbwmy 6 років тому

      I think the key problem is shipping. I got them through www.taobao.com(a Chinese version of ebay.com), for I am living in China and the shipping fee is around 8 RMB (1.14 USD) within this country. A 18ml tube usually costs 16-80 RMB (≈2.29-11.43 USD) , shipping fees not included, which is rather cheap, but I think the international shipping service can be expensive. And most of the Chinese online stores do not ship abroad. An int'l air parcel within 1 kg from China to the US usually cost about 25-30 USD (to Canada, minus 5 USD; to the UK, plus 0.6 USD) as far as I know. -- So if you don't mind such an int'l postage and you trust me, I can buy them for you and post them to where you are. Their vibrant colors (Cadmiums, Quinacridones, Phthalos, Turquoise, etc) are quite good, I think. ///^_^///
