Don't overlook full professional or artist grade paints. Choose less colors to begin but also check out a few of the quality brands that offer a good value for the money. Berlin Blue is an old name for Prussian Blue, named after the city where it was first made. Berlin was the capital of Prussia back then, and my home city right now. JJ Diesback created it by accident, back in 1706, when he was trying to do something else. Thanks for your opinion on the set. They look great and I love your painting. A big drawback is that it doesn't sell as open stock. These days my go to budget choice is Rosa Gallery made in 🇺🇦, which are unbeatable in price. Renesans tubes often have binder separation issues. I need to insert a skewer or a piece of wire to mix it before pouring. Quite frustrating. White Night paints are hard to find due to economic sanctions to Russia, but they are indeed lovely paints. I love Roman Szmal watercolors. They are reasonably priced and you get full sized pans. Now they are making 1/2 pans as well. They don’t come in tubes as of yet. But the amount of paint you get for the price is unbelievable. And the colors are amazing. They are my ride or die and one of my top 3 brands.
Good to know. It would be great if Jackson's US would send Steve a set to review (hint, hint Jacksons!) I would love to see a review on this channel. I've seen them in other videos, but consider this channel the go-to place for info on all things watercolor :)
Confirm. Roman Szmal Aquarius series have a great range of single-pigment colors (somewhat the whole line is Daniel Smith-inpired, I think), and the price is a bargain for the quality.
They still can't compete against Paul Rubens and White Nights when it comes to price quality ratio. I got every color of White Nights for 1 dollar per full pan which was a steal.

Shinhan, made in Korea, is a good brand of the lesser expensive paints. I still think high quality paper is more important than the type of paint used.
I normally use Daniel Smith, but I found that Mission watercolors (especially single pigment sets) offer tremendous quality for the price.
Yes I like the Mission Gold.
I like the Misdion Gold, too. I find the colours much less natural than Daniel Smith, so I use them for different things.
I agree with you about Paul Rubens’ apparent goal of being an affordable brand with good quality. I have a couple sketchbooks in my to-use pile, but I got them based on reviews from UA-cam artists whom I trust. The prices for them was pretty good and they had some hot press books that I was having a hard time finding then (I think I was looking for a non spiral-bound book with cotton paper). I think Paul Rubens’ options would be a good option to suggest for beginners.
Da vinci and Roman Szmal are also affordable high quality paints. This is a beautiful set.

Thanks so much, Steve, for sharing your opinion as such an experienced artist and watercolorist. It really helps add confidence to decision making for a newbie like me. I purchased the Mission Gold 24 + 2 pure pigment set for $82 a couple of months ago. Twice what you mentioned for this 24-set of PR, however, you get three times the paint. For value, and perhaps quality, just wanted to weigh in for any who might be jumping into this amazing medium. (Also understanding that a smaller quantity and initial investment might also be the best decision!) Thanks again for all you do.

Rosa watercolors have a set of mono pigments that seems to be professional. They made in Ukraine. They reasonably priced.
I love, love, love White Nights paints (I've just ordered their granulating palette).As you get full size pans you don't feel so bad letting rip with them! I like the Paul Rubens to, they were one of the first watercolour paints I used.

My favorite watercolor paint is Da Vinci. They're affordable, professional quality. After trying a lot of other brands, I keep going back to them.
I absolutely love these paints, I use them more than my artist grade often so when I saw them for 62 dollars on Amazon I had to get a replacement set

So excited to see you review Paul Ruben’s paints! I’ve been using them for a while and really like them. I’ve been interested in what you would think of them.
I loved the way you filmed your swatching and then gave your comments. I get bored with the usual slow ones that is usually on YT. I wish PR sold individual tubes. I have tubes from the usual suspects, DS, MGraham, Mission Gold, Rosa Gallery ( dreamy) Senne, Schiminke super granulating ( oh my) Roman Szmal. Two handmade by Jasper. I like to play that way. Paul Reubens, Camlin and Renesans are still pending adding to my collection 😛
A year or so ago I chanced upon a relatively inexpensive metal-boxed twelve half-pan set of Mung Yo watercolors. Thought it would be a good plein air set. I’m still using them and I find them to be a great set for me. I really like the colors and so far they appear to be long lasting and they are very easy to use. They mix well and I like how the painting looks long after it has dried and been hung up. I also was able to purchase a set of Turner watercolors. The company claims they are ‘professional’ quality and so far I have not encountered anything to make me think otherwise. I use the Turners for my studio work. Any comment on either set?
Hi Steve. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
Here in Europe (the EU) Reinassance, Paul Rubens and a Russian brand from St. Petersburg (White Knights or something like that I believe but that since the War with Ucrania it's not easy to find anymore) are well known brands that are a bit more quality than student grade (such as W&N Cotman, which is also a top quality student grade paint and very good for sketching in plain air or for Urban sketches without having to brake the bank if just doing some sketching on the go) but not as nice as other Artist grades like Daniel Smith, W&N and Holbein, for example (MGraham is very difficult to find here in Spain or almost impossible and when found at a price that does not make any sense to buy, for example) but they are still pretty good quality, specially for sketching and practicing as I said.

Cotmans are dry and dull (in pans) as far as student paint goes. I switched and never looked back.
@@relaques666 Cotman tubes are better than the pans. I use a few tube colors along with my better paints. Cerulean blue, permanent rose, and payne's grey. My favorite affordable paint is Turner.
Try finding the Ukrainian brand Rosa Gallery. Very reasonable and very similar to white nights.
Lucky you living in Spain! If you have access to Mjello Mission Gold (Korean but apparently sold worldwide) they are very good, honey-based like M Graham and professional grade at a reasonable price. If you are familiar with Soon Warren's incredible work, I think it speaks well of Mission Gold that they are part of her palette.

Living in Romania I have easy acces to Polish, Russian and Ucrainian paints, plus all the well known more expensive European brands. Unfortunately the Renesans tubes cannot be used in a travel palette as they never dry. Anyway, I don't think I need to buy paints for years to come. I loved your spontaneoud painting though. I should try one too. Love foggy wood landscapes.
I have a set of paul rubens, and I love them. I started with cotman, and I like the paul rubens way more. I recommend them to anyone who's looking for good watercolor paint.

Chinese watercolorists are among the best in the world. They have a mastery of watercolor that is extraordinary. I would be very interested in trying Chinese watercolor, and would probably be disappointed that they didn’t make me paint like a Chinese master!!!! 😂

Lovely swatch demo and gorgeous colors. Thank you for taking the time to help us purchase quality products. I had some difficulty maneuvering through the site but I see Amazon has Reubens also. Is there any difference between the paints I could get direct from Reubens or what can be purchased on Amazon? Another question: do you have a video that explains how paints are graded? Thank you again for all you do.
I don't have such a video. Artists grade usually refers to high quality, light fast pigments with no fillers. Student grade paint often uses fillers, lower concentrations of pigment and even dye reinforcement of the colors which are usually NOT light fast.

This is funny when you said that Berlin Blue is really Prussian Blue, because in Bavaria (southernGermany), Berliners are considered "Prussians". This is just a very funny coincidence that caught my attention...lol

Meeden has some lovely quality paints and they are inexpensive.
I have the neon set, don't like it....feels like childrens play paint😅

Isn't White Knight from Russia? I can't support anything from there given current circumstances. I do agree that Renesans is great paint. I bought a palette full based on your recommendation. One thing to note. as I found out the hard way, is they melt on the palette in the heat - so, they are my studio paint - not too practical for en plien aire...

I love Paul Ruben paints. The first set I bought were the flower colors tube set. The last set was the vivid colors in the pan set. I love them both. I also use their hot and cold press, glittery paper. I started using watercolor when covid started.
I got the chance to buy the White Nights full pan set for literally a dollar per full pan, the price was ridiculous so decided to buy every color they offer and some backups. I can now paint whatever I want with no guilt wasting any expensive paint lol
Be careful with White Nights. They contain heavy metals.

@@omaewamoushindeiru6581 Most of the North American and Western European manufacturers offer hue paints, especially for the more dangerous ones like cadmium. As well, they have to follow much stricter environmental standards in their manufacturing if they’re using heavy metals. It’s a factor to consider.
@@omaewamoushindeiru6581 Yep, unless they're 'hues' made from non-toxic alternatives, which can be single pigment (or not), and display good light-fastness or other desirable characteristics that would warrant them a spot in an artist-grade range beside the genuine thing, but they might still behave differently in some ways.
I started with Paul Reubens set. Really liked the set, now I use Holbien and Windsor and Newton tubes. Also love Daniel Smith. But just but individual tubes, very pricey. Great demo
I’m a permanent beginner (2 yrs in) and have a few Daniel smiths that I love, but when I saw this set from Paul Ruben’s I just had to have it. Some are duplicates of what I have, but I can’t wait to play with them. I also just got the “Painters Diary”, which I really love. And as much as I love playing with watercolor, I could also watch swatching videos and all the rest of the WC painting videos, all day!
I have both White Nights and Paul Rubens as well as Schmincke, Mijello, W&N etc. The Paul Rubens is decent paint for the price. It’s just the spot for beginners, it will not hinder learning process while being comfortably price for beginners who are often intimated with prices of prof. supplies.
I always hear this, but then what's the main difference with the other arstis grade paints compared to Paul Rubens and White Nights? They use the same pigments in many of their paints, also there are no fillers or brightness used in the White Nights and Paul Rubens, so don't understand what the big deferences are compared to other artists grade paints, maybe the amount of pigments?
@@omaewamoushindeiru6581 my personal experience is following. With white nights the issue is the consistency of the paint across the line. E.g. some paints give feeling of being very finely ground, easy to rewet, while some are harder to rewet and some are very weak or less pigmented. With Paul Rubens it’s vibrancy, they do not seem so bright, vibrant and finely ground as e.g. Schmincke Horadam. The difference could be also the source and pigment production process, maybe not being as refined as with some legacy brands. Then there is also flow, neither Paul Rubens nor White Nights have the flow like e.g. W&N professional. Also Paul Rubens uses some odd names, and some odd pigment combinations that are not common in western legacy brands, and although this does not directly impact painting it does take time to get to know the colors and learn their names and pigment properties, which often does not have importance for beginners but does make a difference for experienced painters. With legacy brands you don’t have to check each tube for pigment numbers, opacity and staining, because usually same paint names provide similar pigments and their properties. With eastern brands there is a learning period to getting used to their names and pigment properties.

@@omaewamoushindeiru6581I did some swatches with my White Nights, Rosa Gallery and Paul Rubens watercolors, and I noticed that the PR paints are a little less saturated than the WNi/RG. For example, the pr108 Cad Red Light in PR is less saturated than the same color found in WNi

Paul Rubens pink set was my first 'pro' pallet and still in use. I I love trying different paints and none of my pallets are pure any maker. I wish they sold single tubes because I'd like to compare them with Rosa Gallery (Ukrainian) and Roman Szmal (Polish). So much paint, so little money.

I got stuck away from my supplies was dying to paint something anything and I really didn’t want to blow $50.00-$100.00 on paint I already own… I got a set of these on Amazon and tested them out. The colors are rich and vibrant looking very full bodied. And they are cheep😁 good thing for temporary fixes. Again thank you.
I have both of them. Renesans and white nights. While Renesans is too shiny and sticky for my taste, I will use them up. But I love most of the White nights and I use them together with Schmincke, Rembrandt and D. Smith (and a few Mijello). It depends, what color, pigment, transparent, granulation and enviro needs I am looking for.

Renesans is really hard to work with. Hard to get deep colors because the paint is too gooey.

I'm an obsessive paint purchaser. IMHO...Bang for the buck, White Nights is a fabulous deal for opaque and cadmium paints. Mission Gold is a close second. But I'd hesitate to consider either brand a one-stop professional palette. I generally paint several translucent layers, so I'd supplement my transparent colors with the best quality ones possible if money was an issue. Splurge on a few DS quinacridones. Learn to mix, instead of relying on "convenience colors".
why would you go out of your way to buy cadmium paints?

There’s a reason why white nights cadmium paints are so inexpensive… Russian consumer protection standards aren’t exactly stringent. I don’t buy white night because they contain heavy metals.

Hi Steve would love to see a review of a Ukrainian watercolour brand called Rosa Gallery. I have started to play with them and pretty impressed so far, they are incredibly affordable as well.
I bought a set of Paul Rubens neon colors. Neons have limited use because they aren't lightfast, but I was very surprised at how good they are.
Renesans, in my hands, is DREADFUL!!! The paint is gooey. It is chewy straight out of the tube. Once it has benn barely diluted, the color is pale. I used 100%cotton and my friend brought back tubes of paint from Poland as pery request. If you can paint with Renesans you are a watercolor super hero!
Love them. Gooey usually means some binder separation happened. I did not experience any gooiness.
@@mindofwatercolor well, the paint was in luggage, maybe air pressure? Cold? Caused it to be weird. There was some clear fluid amongst the portions I squeezed out. Bummer 😕

I ordered the Ruben. $48 for 48 paints.
To each thier own, but I stay away from China made items when I can. So I pass on the PR stuff.
Actually with regard to it being made in China, he said "feel about that however you want to feel about that". No PR for China here, just a product review that most people find very helpful. Having more affordable options gives US and other manufacturers an incentive to not keep raising their prices :)

I believe you are correct and there is plenty of opportunity for misunderstandings as my post was removed even though it was not in any way intended to offend. I buy Chinese products and Paul Rubins is among them but it appears I shouldn't have pointed out their size diminishing since my purchase. I will post nothing more so I won't inadvertently offend again but I've been watching these videos since the start so it makes me sad that this happened.@@denisewenke8323

I've used and liked Paul Rubens paint and paper. Problem I found is that I tend to run out of certain colors sooner than others and I can't see where you can order individual tubes.
Yes, true. I did not find them available as open stock either. That part is unfortunate. I think of them primarily as entry level and/or budget paint sets. Adding individual colors from other brands would work.
I got many replacement colors from Aliexpress, no seller has the half pans but they still have the tubes. You can never have enough ultramarine blue 😆

I think they represent the opacity - filled in is opaque, half filled is semi-opaque, a diagonal line is semi-transparent, and empty is transparent :)

Honestly don't remember exactly since it was a new selection of colors.
The Renesans paint that can get on Etsy is beautiful. It doesn't seem to make mud for me like other paint. (Yes. , I know that I make the mud but still I don't seem to make as much when using that paint.)
Check out new gouache line by Renesans "Cover". Interested in your opinion.

Just what I was looking for to get back into watercolor, an affordable Paint.......I have a set of Master's Touch ( someone sent me) and I'm not too armored with them.... Your painting style is amazing.....jaw dropping , in fact! Thank you for sharing your talent and expertise!
Watercolors made in China or Japan are more opaque, like a gouache, since they're used for oriental painting. I got a Meeden set and they did not act like watercolors, didn't have the best watercolor effects. I decided to stop wasting time and money and bought the Daniel Smith Essentials tube set plus an extra burnt siena tube. I will not allow myself to use "neutral tint" or Payne's gray - I mix every gray from the primaries.
A gross generalization that just isn’t true. Meeden is not an artists grade paint for one thing. And less than artist grade paints are often more opaque because of fillers. Not at all unique to China or Japan.

These paints get tricky after they dry in your pallet. Hard to re-wet on some colors and very sticky on others. Would recommend Mission Gold watercolors over Paul Rubens. Bang for your buck (24 count), and beautiful colors.
Rubens slightly better cost. I have Mission Gold and love them. Good paint. No issues with Rubens so far.
I have a Paul Ruben's oil pastel set and I really like it! I will give the water color a try.. Beautiful painting btw. I love your style.
