    You have several videos that mention and address this topic, if this were the only video you had produced I could see the concern. These are 20-30 minute videos and are not designed or capable of encompassing all the minutiae to start a small business. You should mention you have a COMPLETE course for starting a candle business which addresses this. But anyone starting a business should do their own research which would include many sources, and watch all the videos you have produced, and those produced from other successful entrepreneurs like Black Tie Barn, Armitage Candles, etc. We so very much appreciate your gracious and generous spirit for sharing your journey with us all. Happy New Year to you and your family. We all look forward to this years content.

    Love your suggestions here Erica on exploring ways to get our supply costs down. I buy in pretty small quantities now but I’m hoping that as I sell more candles and wax melts to be able to buy the larger quantities for deeper discounts! Love your channel and I look forward to every new video!! 😍 Tina

    I just watched the video and I have to completely disagree with the original comment.
    I get what they’re going after but to be fair you can absolutely still make an 8 ounce jelly jar candle for less than $5 which you can absolutely sell for 4X the cost ($20) and even more at $22
    $20 - $22 is absolutely an acceptable price for a nice 8 ounce jelly jar candle and you do not need to buy in bulk to get that price.
    If you are lucky enough to buy locally and save on shipping, you can get the overall bass cost even lower

    Erica, you are so helpful and you are the inspiration. You always help a lot. I disagree with the comment- I am a candle maker who has been doing/testing candles since 2022, and I plan to finally launch in 2025. of course my COG are extremely high - 18-22€ per piece since I am buying in very small batches, I am buying luxury jars, EO, beeswax which is the most expensive, soywax in small batches is also very expensive. You teach us a lot, but everyone is responsible for the own calculations. I personally cannot sell COG x4, Erica can do nothing against it as long as my manufacturing costs are that high.

    Hi Ericka! I found your channel last year and I’m finally starting with adding candles to an existing business. I still get so much from your videos, I know I’m not able to buy in bulk yet but I still find your videos helpful! I still do research for the future of when I can buy in bulk. I know when I launch my luxury line later in 2025, those candles will cost more because I will be using a blend of soy and coconut that costs more. I live an hour from CandleScience so I will save on shipping by picking up those heavy orders as well. Now that I understand how expensive shipping is, I feel better about charging more than I was going to initially. Everyone has their opinions of course, but I just want you to know I find everything helpful as a beginner. Thank you!

    If you are creating a BRAND, why would you want to attract customers who are wanting to buy cheaply priced candles when in the future you are going to price your candles at a profitable margin? You will have to do more work in attracting the desired customer. Bad advice from the I want cheap a candle person. It's important to know your TARGETED audience. Are you Luxury brand? Are you trying to compete with Big Box? Big Box probably has automation and a cheap labor crew Know WHY you are in business.

  • @MikhilaMcDaid
    @MikhilaMcDaid Місяць тому +3

    I actually totally disagree.. your advice was sound. Nobody is pricing up their candles from test supply volumes if they’re ACTUALLY starting a business. We should be going off the max cost of good at a reasonable volume and then as we grow, our margins increase and that gives us wiggle room for incidentals like supplier price changes or having to buy one off smaller quantities. The person who left that comment was unreasonably critical of your free resources

  • @kellsgreenidge8885
    @kellsgreenidge8885 Місяць тому

    I personally don't think you needed to respond to that comment. The information you have been sharing is valuable. You have made it clear in previous videos to beginners how they can start; by buying small and building from there. In regards to pricing there are many resources available now to makers so pricing for profit is easier. I am now going into candle making as a business and I'm buying in bulk when I can. I use my online softwares to price for retail and wholesale, can't get enough of those two tools. May I suggest you make contact with Salette Thimot-Campos to do a an interview on how persons can use AI for their handmade business. She is very knowledgeable in that field, I believe it will be a great inclusion for makers that support and follow you.

    I have made 4 Beeswax candles with 70% Beeswax, and 30% Coconut oil. They all developed sink holes next to the wick. While I was able to remelt and fix it, what causes that so that so that I can prevent it in the future?

    • @rbergamo5

      Personally, I would say watch room, table temperatures. The wax is cooling too quick, has been my experience. Slow it down by either wrapping the vessels or I use an aluminum deep pan or cardboard box and cover the vessels until they are cured. My candle room temp is a spare bedroom that has horrible heat flow. I have space heater for when I am in there, but otherwise the temp drops to 59-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Good luck

    Hi I hope this message finds you well. I am in the process of creating unique fragrance blends for my candle line, and I wanted to ask for your guidance regarding mixing oils and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
    When developing a new fragrance blend, I understand that it creates a new chemical mixture, which would require its own Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) documentation.
    Could you kindly share how you approach the process of mixing oils and what legal documents you prepare to sell exclusive fragrance blends? Do you handle the creation of SDS and CLP information yourself, or do you work with a third party for this?
    I appreciate any advice or insights you can offer as I navigate this part of the candle-making process.
    Thank you so much for your time and support, and I look forward to your response.

    I didn’t watch the other video, but based on the comment, it doesn’t sound like the video was for that person. Not every video is going to be for everyone. It sounds like they are in a space of needing to learn, take profits to reinvest in being able to move into buying bulk to get to a space to wholesale.
    Wholesale isn’t for those who are just starting out and not buying cogs in bulk.
    Everyone also needs to know their demographic. My bar of soap might not/or be able to sell for more or less in different areas.
    Not every video you make needs to focus on every single person watching it. It’s not disappointing, it’s just not for them.

  • @rubynieves2668
    @rubynieves2668 Місяць тому

    Everyone definitely has a right and a liberty to his/ her own opinion. In my obnoxious opinion, I think this comment came across a bit harsh and financially short sided. Selling a product 4 times higher as retail is not only common in the handcrafted candle market but a smart initial practice to test market value, though many people go as high as 5, 7, 10 times their cost of goods. That's not a bad thing if you can be successful at that price point, especially since most of the time your cost of goods is within your control to raise or lower somewhat. It is also not accurate and simple minded for this person to claim that every handcrafter or new business person can not or will not have access to wholesale or bulk products right away, it's just not true and very harsh to criticize you for using that example. I don't think that anyone could possibly make a business video that shows every example of cost of goods breakdown or investment because it's so subjective to market, initial budget, but also business model, llc, versus sole proprietor, versus mass market corporation etc. You are sweet to apologize, but I think it's unessecary because you didn't intentionally provide incorrect information, you were just showing 1 perspective of a business model that the commentor really didn't understand. Some of the wisest business advice I received was " don't sell something from your own pocket, you don't know what the other person is willing to pay and your cutting down profit from starting too low". Same concept applies to small business, options and abundance usually do better. Also, if there was a small part of you that did not agree with the comment made or felt hurt by it, I think that's okay. Disagreement is not hatred and is what keeps capatlist competition going. ( Though I don't think it's necessary either to make hurtful comments, and you were very humble in your response). I would love to see more of your videos getting back to candle making techniques, fragrance oils and how to best wick for different waxes and jars. No matter how advanced someone gets in handcrafted candle making there is usually new techniques to learn. Business analysis, cost of goods, bugets and taxes will always be there - but they are black and white and almost never define what makes a brand distinctive or artistic. Keep going Erica- win , loose or draw , we learn together! I'm with you! #TeamErica🎉
