From Maryland, we have tons of Wawas here, and I love some of their food. Others are definitely hit or miss, but it's a great place to go for something quick, especially because I work overnight and the food is available all night.
Wawa recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. Started as a dairy seller in wawa, PA. Grew into the regional convenience store chain many of us know over the years and didn't add gas til the 90s. It's an institution in many towns in the region. One of the things I've found in my 28 years is that Wawa stores that cater to people locally tend to have a lot better quality control and such than the ones that you'll find along the highway or even major roads
Like any other store that has spread to many many locations. The quality really comes down to the individual employees at the store and their management. I work in hundreds of different restaurants, including places like Burger King, Wendy's, Dairy Queens, KFCs, you name it. And they ALL vary wildly. It's 100% who works there and how much they care about the job they're doing.
@@KhronicDWawa built their brand on having good employees. They have a an employee ownership program where employees can get stock int he company as well as benefits. A huge contrast to most convenience stores that just pay their employees minimum wage part time. Of course with so many items on the menu quality control is not easy and can slip depending on the location.
Enjoy them from the beginning and work your way to this. Such a fun and hilarious journey. Love these guys, the camera team, the whole team. Plus the fams.❤

a hoagie is a sandwich but a sandwich isnt a hoagie. a hoagie has to have the long roll. There are specific bread makers in the philly area that supply the best rolls for hoagies and cheesesteaks
Isn't the use of these terms just regional colloquialisms? Where I am we would just call a sandwich in that shape a sub which is short for submarine sandwich.
@@grantshardelow1522hoagie is a regional term of a sub yes. most of the Northeast U.S has a local kind of term for it, the rest of the U.S mostly calls it a sub.
I’ve found people outside the US seem to be sticklers for the idea that a sandwich is between two slices of bread. Hence why some people call a Crispy Chicken Sandwich a “Chicken Burger”.
You guys went to Wawa in the wrong time of year. Around thanksgiving they have the gobbler hoagie that’s a must try, it’s turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, and stuffing on a hoagie roll. Honestly my favorite thing there
Buccee's and Wawa are so different. They are both amazing. Hoagies, soft pretzels and shakes at Wawa can not be beat. Buccee's is more a destination for shopping and has delicious BBQ (and bathrooms). Wawa's have tables you can eat at which is nicer than Buccee's where you have to eat in your car. Love them both!
@Sam-lr9oi I have one near me with a dining area. 9/10 times it isn't being used but if you wander into a location with tables after a long night at the bars, you're having a GREAT night.
Depending on where you live, it's a Sub/Submarine sandwich (from the shape) a Hero, a Hoagie, Grinder (not to be confused by Grindr, the shape is similar, but a Grinder tastes better), an Italian, Spuckie (Boston), Torpedo (shape again), Po'boy (Southern), and Bánh mì: A fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines
The goose is in the logo because it means canadian goose in Native American Lenni Lenape language. They lived in the area Wawa was founded prior to European colonizers came.
There’s hoagies which are cold, subs which are only meatball or like a chicken parm but that is just called a chicken parm, and then a grinder which is a hot hoagie essentially. But that I’ve only ever seen at Wawa. Usually around thanksgiving. It’s complicated to explain to outsiders but if you’re from Philly you know. Also I think you’re currently in Jersey. And I’m fairly certain they call things differently there. But Wawa is from the greater Philadelphia area so it’s hoagies all day, subs for meatballs, and grinders for random things that don’t fit proper classification.
I have never been more excited for a Jolly video 😂As a native Philadelphian I will say that you missed an opportunity to have the soft baked pretzels at Wawa. Not the stuffed ones but the regular, degular soft baked pretzels are SO GOOD! *whispers* I like the mac n cheese tho 🤷🏽♀ lol Also, as someone who goes to Wawa frequently, ordering there had a learning curve for us as well 😂😂 I'm still holding out hope that one day you get to experience water ice bc let me tell you, in the summer time some water ice and a soft baked pretzel....MAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN That is a Philly classic!
Wawa started as a dairy, became a deli/ corner store (almost like a bodega) for decades, and for about the past 15 ish years they started changing to gas stations. Open 24 hours for the after bar goers. Wawa is Named from the town it started in Wawa, Pennsylvania. Native American for goose.
You hit it spot on, all the different sandwiches are great, you gotta know your way around the options, and it definitely caters to a roadtrip or cheap lunch
jolly, been watching youse tour the northeast coast (nyc and philly) these past few weeks, and i'm thrilled you tried a local chain, wawa. should've had a native walk you thru things, but you did pretty well. thanks for all the jolly good laughs!
Wawa is such garbage now though. Gives Philly a bad name when it used to be such an amazing spot. When they got rid of the actual deli, added the gas stations and began expanding all over the country it took a a header into the shitter.
@@chrisdanks741there is truth in your words. My other problem with wawa is whenever i start liking something, they take it away… chili cheese dogs, irish cream coffee, hot roast beef/gravy hoagies to name a few
@@adrock1011 yeah then they introduce something that’s terrible in its place. It’s because the stuff that ends up decent costs too much. The jalapeño and cheese stuffed pretzels are awesome. I was born in Wawa territory, I live in Nebraska now have haven’t had Wawa in years and this is bringing back memories. Should have gotten the mac and cheese with old bay. Glad you survived the parking lot. Y’all should try Sheetz now!
As someone from New Jersey - that bagel hurt me on a spiritual level. Please go to a good bagel shop in NYC or NJ and get a BEC (bacon, egg and cheese) with salt, pepper, ketchup. That Italian sub is giving me CRAVINGS and the Rutgers banner is giving me so much nostalgia!
Wawa looks like a Quick Trip, aka: QT, which is also a mostly Southern US gas station chain. They tend to be in high traffic areas in towns & cities, while Buccee's are always right off the highway on road trip routes.
I remember a coworker of mine that had just moved from PA, got all excited when a WaWa was opening in our town in FL. I was like “Eew! You wanna eat a sandwich from a gas station?” She reassured me, Wawas hoagies are fresh and delicious 😋 and I do admit, I love their meatballs subs and during thanksgiving their turkey& gravy & stuffing sub, so delicious 😋
My favorite things at Wawa are that you can buy healthy snacks instead of just junk food. But my guilty pleasure is a particular type of junk food…the Canada Dry Black Cherry Wishniak. Apparently, it’s only sold in the Philadelphia area and since Wawa is Philadelphia based, you can find it at Wawa stores well outside of the Philadelphia area. I’m sure it’s just a soft drink and forgettable to most people but I love it.
hahaha wooder! I love the delconian touch (though throwing Wawa under the bus like that may make you seem more mainline then delco!) - from your Interboro neighbor
I 've been over the country and tried many different gas station/store combos. Bucee's is in a league of it's own. Nostalgia makes a Sheetz,Wawa,Casey's,7-11,Allsup's,Love's or Pacific Market fan boy but Bucee's make's a believer of anyone who goes there.
Yeah, the problem I have with Wawa is that they forget items quite often. Once I ordered a turkey hoagie and they forgot the turkey. It was just cheese and veggies.
How does that work ? I assume a hoagie is a sandwich , so how did they forget the key ingredient, I would have thought they would forget the cheese part 😅
Jersey girl here, and the thing about Wawa is that it's dependable and convenient. If you need something to eat, Wawa is there for you, offering reasonable quality food and a ton of options. They do NOT make the best hoagie/sub in the mid-Atlantic by a LONG shot, but if I'm smashed at 3am or pulling an overnight, I know I can get something fresh and decent enough at Wawa when everything else is closed. There's also always one within a short distance, so they can be a good option for a fast lunch on a work day and a good way to get a quick and decent cup of coffee on your way to work. I do not love their breakfast sandwiches, but sometimes they do the job. They also offer a lot of healthy, ready-to-go options. Sadly, the mac and cheese is always mushy AF.
In NY state a hoagie is a “sub” (short for submarine sandwich). A sandwich is usually on SLICED bread. A sub/hoagie is always on a roll. That’s the difference. It’s the bread.
@@LordLOC They made a funny joke, but if you legitimately believe that, you either haven't watched any other JOLLY in America videos, or you have the memory of a goldfish.

Sure you can get unhealthy food but you can also get healthy food, it's all up to you.
As someone who lives 5 minutes away from a Wawa and practically goes there everyday- Not getting the Mint Matcha cream smoothie is criminal. Also, at least at my WAWA, the mac and cheese is some of the best I've tasted anywhere. No joke, it is incredible! Not sure if that's every wawa or not though. The chicken and egg breakfast burritos. So if you guys visit one again, try these.
Thank you guys so much for doing a video on Wawa. It so hard trying to explain to people in the midwest how good Wawa food is. When I was a kid the food prep area was actually a deli and you could get your meats and cheeses freshly sliced there. That was one reason their hoagies were so good, they sliced the meat fresh for each sandwich. I don't know how much it has changed since the last time I was there in the early aughts. Wawa was always more like a 7/11. They were originally a small convenience store that also had a deli. They didn't start adding gas stations until about 30 years ago. There were Wawa's long before there was a Subway. I grew up moving between Pennsylvania and Kansas. People all along the upper east coast have been saying hoagie my entire life... almost half a century. It isn't just a Philly local area word. IMO the best hoagies are from Wawa. People in the midwest didn't have a general word for hoagie type sandwiches until Subway came along (I know this because I remember it happening in my lifetime), thus the 'sub' sandwich name. 'Sub' sandwiches are not hoagies. They are the sub-par version of hoagies. The bread especially is different, and better in hoagies. The type of bread used matters! Hoagie rolls are stronger and yet still soft. There is a distinct difference that can't be recreated by toasting the sandwich. That just makes the bread flaky. The strength in the bread has to be baked into it. Stronger bread makes for a better sandwich. Similarly, pinwheel rolls are not the same as Keiser rolls. Keiser rolls are better, again stronger without sacrificing their softness. Also, pretzels that aren't cooked with lye and are dipped in spicy nacho cheese sauce are not as good as the pretzels you get from the street vendors in NY and Philly. They don't compare at all. The cheese is more like velveeta and it is amazing. I can't get a good pretzel with cheese in the midwest because they just don't understand how good the traditional pretzel really is.

I have gone back through all 7 years to watch the evolution of this channel, and I think the last couple of years Josh and Ollie finally landed on a consistent theme/narrative - travel and food reviews. It really doesn't matter what they review to me, from Michelin star delicacies to gas station comfort food, it is always entertaining to watch them outside of their comfort zone. And for those that may be new to Jolly, they also have another channel which has been around even longer and has double the subscribers - The Korean Gentlemen. Not as entertaining for me as Jolly, but I think this might be a cultural disconnect on my part (although some of that content I love as well).
This kind of looks like what QT is in Texas (the ones with a kitchen), an above average gas station that makes food. Buc-ee's is another level above that, but its also an annoyingly busy tourist attraction.
I love this newer format where they start reminiscing and introduce the video, then toggle back and forth! Totally agree the ordering at Wawa needs a revamp to make it more seamless!
Will say 100% Wawa has good food IF you get it right. They mess up on orders ALL THE TIME. To the point, I sometimes don’t wanna go there thinking they will mess up my order.
Hoagie is a cold sandwich with lunch meat and vegetables where sandwiches can vary, it's a general term honestly. Just hoagie is a Pennsylvania tri-state area thing to say.
Wawa was best when they sourced everything externally instead of making everything in house. They started out just as a deli originally so they used to get all of their cold cuts from Boar's Head, had their bread delivered daily from an Italian bakery in Philly (one very much like the bread that Angelo's has for their cheesesteaks) and locally sourced most things that could be. That period when they were basically a local deli in a gas station was definitely the only time it could challenge Buc-ee's. Unfortunately with their huge expansion, they're just a shadow of themselves when it comes to quality convenience.
I don't know we have Buccees on this side of the Mississippi and WaWa is no better than Sheetz. WaWa is alright but the last few times I stopped there it was terrible no where near as good as it was a decade or so ago.
Living in Canada, I am quite jealous of the vast variety of food spots America has. Dont get me wrong, I love Canada, but I think there are some things that we're just behind at compared to the rest of the western world. Although now that I said that, it seems pretty obvious.
Depends on where you are, I guess. In my part of the country, I am inundated with WAYYYY too much variety. Sometimes this is good. My local gas station offers both A&W and a Punjabi hot food table/sweets counter. If I want a Nigerian food and then get Portuguese chicken next door, then I can. Other times it just gets so overwhelming that I just end up getting Tim’s lol
Having spent half my life in each country, it depends on where you are. Wawa is very regional, as are the other places mentioned. They certainly beat the pants off of TImmy's for a proper meal. In New York State, being on an interstate is just as crap for food as the 401 in Ontario. Being in rural America is not good for choice, big cities can have great variety, just like in Canada.

They’ve made their way down to my hometown (Mobile, AL). It will open this summer and I’m curious to check it out.

Old Wawa was prime though. I was worried when they started expanding so aggressively.
@@word42069 once they stopped cutting their own deli meats and cheeses it was a sign the quality was going downhill. Also baking their own rolls.
That meat was top of the line. The Buffalo chicken sandwich was to die for, now it’s made out of cow knuckles and chicken rubber cubes
And new Wawa is still better than anything in southwest Virginia…
“The people are so friendly here!” Not always. Glad you received a positive reception, even from the random driver. Philly’s byline is the City of Brotherly Love. I used to say it with irony when I lived there for 4 years, plus 1 year in its suburb.

a hoagie is a sandwich but a sandwich isnt a hoagie. a hoagie has to have the long roll. There are specific bread makers in the philly area that supply the best rolls for hoagies and cheesesteaks
Isn't the use of these terms just regional colloquialisms? Where I am we would just call a sandwich in that shape a sub which is short for submarine sandwich.
Shut up
@@grantshardelow1522hoagie is a regional term of a sub yes. most of the Northeast U.S has a local kind of term for it, the rest of the U.S mostly calls it a sub.
We just call them subs. We have hoagie bread but they just call them subs

I work at wawa. It's nice to see yall
I've lived in south jersey my whole life and have never seen a wawa with tables that I can recall, where do I find this?
@Sam-lr9oi I have one near me with a dining area. 9/10 times it isn't being used but if you wander into a location with tables after a long night at the bars, you're having a GREAT night.
Depending on where you live, it's a Sub/Submarine sandwich (from the shape) a Hero, a Hoagie, Grinder (not to be confused by Grindr, the shape is similar, but a Grinder tastes better), an Italian, Spuckie (Boston), Torpedo (shape again), Po'boy (Southern), and Bánh mì: A fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines
Now you guys have to do Sheetz next!!!
YES!!!! They use cream cheese instead of cheddar for their jalapeno poppers which is the correct move IMO. Nobody else does that.
i think sheetz is better IMO
The best!!!
And sit on the toilet immediately after all that fried food lol
I second this
Wawa is actually onomatopoeia. It's the sound a goose makes. The old logo actually had a goose flying in it.
Geese have never made the sound “Wawa” in 100 parallel universes
The goose is in the logo because it means canadian goose in Native American Lenni Lenape language. They lived in the area Wawa was founded prior to European colonizers came.
I’m SO relieved you didn’t try any of the newer after 4pm/Wawa for dinner offerings but I do wish you had been able to sample a breakfast sizzli!
I'm from Northeast Philly, and most of our Wawa's don't sell gasoline. They're neighborhood stores. As kids, we walk/bike to them.
I have never been more excited for a Jolly video 😂As a native Philadelphian I will say that you missed an opportunity to have the soft baked pretzels at Wawa. Not the stuffed ones but the regular, degular soft baked pretzels are SO GOOD! *whispers* I like the mac n cheese tho 🤷🏽♀ lol Also, as someone who goes to Wawa frequently, ordering there had a learning curve for us as well 😂😂

Yup. They're both good. Ain't saying that WaWa is bad at all, but Buccee's runs circles around them.
Wawa is a lifesaver when you go to work early in the am and want a solid lunch option for later. The breakfast burritos are solid as well.
it's always the best when you go in and sizzlis are 2 for $5, but I've never figured out how to know when thats happening

Wawa looks like a Quick Trip, aka: QT, which is also a mostly Southern US gas station chain. They tend to be in high traffic areas in towns & cities, while Buccee's are always right off the highway on road trip routes.
Wawa has great fruit smoothies and we always pick up cold hoagies on the way to the beach here in Florida. It’s one stop shopping.
The punny statements between Josh and Ollie are classic. Did I note a change in Ollie's voice in the ice bath?😆
Sometimes I just get a cup of meatballs lol 😆
OMFG A WAWA EPISODE. I grew up in the philadelphia area and have been to wawa hundreds of times
"gaslight station" @5:25 lol
My favorite things at Wawa are that you can buy healthy snacks instead of just junk food. But my guilty pleasure is a particular type of junk food…the Canada Dry Black Cherry Wishniak. Apparently, it’s only sold in the Philadelphia area and since Wawa is Philadelphia based, you can find it at Wawa stores well outside of the Philadelphia area. I’m sure it’s just a soft drink and forgettable to most people but I love it.
Black Cherry Wishniak is the treat drink of my childhood! Love that!
As a Delco native I can say that Buc-ee's blows Wawa out of the wooder when it comes to food. Wawa is convenient and everywhere, however.
I love that you spelled it wooder. 😂
yeah idk who kept hyping them up on it lol its an excellent gas station but def not in the same league as Buc.
hahaha wooder! I love the delconian touch (though throwing Wawa under the bus like that may make you seem more mainline then delco!) - from your Interboro neighbor
I never heard of either.
You forgot Turkey Hill
I can't wait to try Casey's and Buccees, I've been a wawa boy my whole life but I have an open mind
Buc'ees has 48 locations and Wawa has 1058 so i can see why bathrooms are not as nice. Especially considering locations and size of stores and staff.
In NY state a hoagie is a “sub” (short for submarine sandwich). A sandwich is usually on SLICED bread. A sub/hoagie is always on a roll. That’s the difference. It’s the bread.

Next time you guys are in the states you need to come to Maryland and pick some steamed Chesapeake bay crabs and some pit beef BBQ.

Yeah good call it looks like one of the larger QTs. Higher tier than an average station but not comparable to Buc-ee's.
I love the cream cheese stuffed pretzels so much that I once stopped at four different Wawas in a single road trip to keep getting another one.

I love this newer format where they start reminiscing and introduce the video, then toggle back and forth! Totally agree the ordering at Wawa needs a revamp to make it more seamless!

Wawa is dedicated to long road trips and every day life from breakfast to lunch, to dinner, to every snack in between and 1 am cravings
In Scotland a "Hoagie" is a wrap with some kind of kebab meat, chips and cheese.
A Hoagie is basically a submarine sandwich. Anything hot or cold between a split bread roll usually including meat and veggies.
Hoagie is a cold sandwich with lunch meat and vegetables where sandwiches can vary, it's a general term honestly. Just hoagie is a Pennsylvania tri-state area thing to say.
A hoagie is still a sandwich
@@jeffhampton2767 Obviously. It's a term used in the Pennsylvania area..
Alright, now come to the Midwest and try Casey’s pizza. Recommend the breakfast pizza.
You really committed to that better help ad, Ollie!!!!
Fun fact. In Poland the city and capitol of Poland - Warsaw - Warszawa is sometimes called WAWA for short :D
Wawa literally got the best gas station sandwiches on this side of the Mississippi. The other side too I’m sure 😎
The other side of the Mississippi doesn't rely on the gas stations for real food as much.

But you have the best poutine❤
