Small correction: While Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January by the Orthodox Christians (Actually translates to the 25th of December on the Julian calendar), the big celebration for the Russians is New Years day. 1st of January.

I visited Moscow before the pandemic and went to this mall. I distinctly remember walking by the aquarium, not knowing it was an aquarium, when I noticed something moving inside. And then it hit me - I was standing next to one of the biggest and most impressive aquariums I had ever seen. It was really, really cool.

The main holiday in Russia is the New Year, Christmas is usually for those who celebrate it, e.g. religious people Just like Hanukkah for Jewish people or Uraza for Muslims
I think though the stores and malls want to start as early as possible each year. In Australia it's the same way, the minute one holiday is over, the stores change out for the next one. Russell.
Thank you for this tour, I've been planning to visit this place for quite a while already. I also like the area around the mall, nice place to have a walk. Also it's good news that H&M has left finally, they shouldn't even have come to Russia with their low quality plastic clothes. So thank you once again, it was interesting to watch!

Other than economy H&M this company has COS, Arket, &other stories, which are incredibly popular and have high quality goods. So many people were very much upset they’ve left. Btw H&M also has premium lines: natural silk, wool, cashmere. Quality is not the highest but quite ok, same as their price

Some observations: 1) There are not many people in the mall despite the fact that it is so close to Christmas and the upcoming New Year holiday. I have seen video of this mall during summer with far more people than there are now. It is not because they are spread out over many floors. 2) Of the people I do see in the mall, I don't see a lot of people carrying shopping bags. 3) Is it possible that not many of people are shopping at the stores offering discounts because they just can't afford to? 4) There were not many shoppers in any of the stores, whether they were American or Russian Stores. It is not due to people not being "familiar with American brands" for the American stores and "management must have raised the prices" for Russian stores. So what stores are all the people shopping in if not these stores? 5) Were all the people working at the pop-up stores taking a break at the same time...at the exact time you happen to be filming? Russell, I used to watch your videos and enjoy them but now it is sad to see that you sound like you are a propagandist working for the Russian government. I am not stupid, nor blind. Here in America, malls have been declining for years. Most of them have closed stores and a trickle of people during most of the year but in November and December, even now with high inflation, the malls are packed. Every store, kiosk, foodcourt, benches etc. has people working in and shopping atthem I've seen videos of the same mall in this video by other UA-camrs from Cthe time last year(even earlier in year as well) and I'm sorry but there is a big difference in the number of people, number of people actually shopping and number of people in the food court. It is unfortunate that you can't be real about what is really taken place-especially given that you come from "the west". I wonder why?
In Russia Christmas is January 7th,and bicgest celebrstion is on New Year Eve. Also, they dont gift to each other much, only for gifts. Biggest shopping they do is groceries to make homemade food like Thanksgiving dinner so tvey mostly go to smalker stores and farmers markets wgere tvey buy ftesh meat, poultry, honey ect from local farmers. Also, online shopping is very popular and easy to order online, then try on ordered clotves in nearbystoreand if not fit, chsnge size and get proper one instead of get it shipped, then return back by mail like in US
This could be just shopping habits change. Online shopping and home delivery are much more convenient) My "shopping" in such malls is mostly for clothes, and I would go to a mall to feel the fabric, to tty them on, but I'll take a couple of days to think if I really need this item in my wardrobe, cause I do have more than enough already)) and then will just order it online (usually comes cheaper as well) in most cases I'll just order a selection online and try them on at home while the courier waits and decide which ones I want to keep

Amazing. Coat check in a shopping centre. Russia is more civilised than the rest of Europe. Try and find a coat check anywhere in London. Only in very expensive theatres, and even then they are not always operating. Yes, the former H&M store says on their posters new store is opening soon. Unlikely anyone will even remember about H&M after new store opening. Regarding GAP - they closed all their stores in the UK. The situation with GAP is more to do with their losses worldwide, they are really struggling.
So to summarise, the Western brands have left (mostly), replaced by local brands, which in some cases closely copy the old name and buy goods on the parallel market (so prices would be higher). All as predicted. I guess an interesting follow-up question would be, are they still paying the same rental prices for the units as they used to.
Most of the brands have been only taken over by local management of the brands. There is certainly something interesting about some of these major brands and how quickly they rebranded the stores and continue to operate. As for the perfume brands, some of them have restarted importing to Russia, so no need to be on the parallel import list. Russell.

That looks pretty sad actually, retail needs to have a lot more traffic to pay the big mall rent, but it would be nice to see last week of December because holidays make or break retail.
I just came out of a shopping mall in Prague, a city that is just one tenth the size of Moscow. The traffic was 10 times bigger inside. This mall here smells like a bankruptcy.
As some Western companies are pulling out, there are great opportunities for Russian businesses. Sometimes they are able to buy the assets at a discount price as the current owners are eager to get out. Star Coffee is a well-known example, but this is also happening at a smaller scale. The French chain "L'Occitane en Provence" played it more cleverly. They just changed the spelling to Cyrillic, so that people from the West do not immediately recognize it even in videos like this one.
Russian businessmen are leaving Russia as well. 🤣 What business one can do in a country where retail sales are falling dramatically and soon mobile phones will stop working.
@@2mek99 Why would mobile phones stop working? Do you mean U.S. mobile phones can be switched off centrally by the CIA or something? For now, even sales of iPhones have continued, though via Kazakhstan. And there's still a wide choice of Chinese brands which are anyway better. It is true that some adaptation is required. Distributors of imported goods are in great difficulties. By contrast, import substitution gives new opportunities. Even consumers can benefit if they adapt. For example, the Russian Federation is rich in food. If you buy local produce it will be very cheap while imports can be expensive. They should forget U.S. junk food and remember what they have in their own country.
@@erikt1713 Ericsson and Nokia are leaving. Without their support (spare parts) the network will stop working. It may work in big cities. Welcome back to 90ties. mobile phones do not matter if the network is down.
@@2mek99 I see what you mean, but this is a misunderstanding. Nokia and Ericsson are not going to sabotage their existing installations. Customers around the world would be very uneasy about that. Instead they are only halting future services and deliveries. It will be perfectly possible for a new service provider to take over. For example, Huawei will be only too happy to take over and pick up future investments into 5G upgrades as well. If at all an original part is needed, which would be rare, it will be available for example via Kazakhstan same as practically all Western stuff. Having said that, it is is a bit of a watch-out and I'm glad Switzerland diversified its mobile infrastructure a bit while getting 5G from Huawei.
So some brands decided to leave, and how much has that cost them, in the millions. Compared to some US UA-camrs videos of some US malls the Russian ones seem busy, and there are no sanctions in the US. Don’t forget utility bills are getting more expensive in the West, there are some cities where shoplifting is rife, Poland who raised the value for theft has suffered a 60% rise in that crime. Have you told the facts that in Moscow there are major malls at nearly every tube station city area
@@lornewazny7152 Same here, online marketplaces take their toll. Ozon, Wildberries, Yandex Market and several more. People buy food and even medicaments online.
Sanctions are about the attack on a sovereign state. Not about money. What ever it takes Russia will break as your inflation rises. How many people no jobs? Taxes going up. Your ruble will be rubble. Your income from oil and gas is the lowest ever! Putin is a gangster. Many Russians have left, mostly qualified. Stone Age awaits Russia.
Shopping centers are now a very old-fashioned phenomenon in the west. Not even women are interested in shopping. You order it online and don't waste any more time.

IN the supermarkets people are buying everything, food for day-to-day life. It's near impossible to list what people are shopping for in these stores as a walk through them so fast. Russell.
I was watching a UA-camr do a walk through of a closing mall in New York. We have many malls closing in the USA. Mall are not showplace they were once like a few decades ago. There were many alarms constantly come from the vacant shops which was due to the shop renters/owners not returning to turn off their alarms. It seem that these alarms can go on indefinitely, months or more.
Here in USA many factors contribute to mall closures, video games in computers and phones, shopping online, economy, less convenient, crime, etc. Malls were the posh and safe place to excape too. Some parts of the open malls are spooky walk through. The parking lots is scary. On can no longer walk the malls and streets of Los Angeles with a feeling of safety. As I get older, I get more and more aware of street dangers. In fact, I don't see much older people at malls today. It was s place were older people could go for group walks. Now, they are much more likely to be prey to violent criminal. Public transportation is worse. Now, there is increasing smash and grab thefts in the mall which was once a very safe place. These are some of the reasons I am living in Mexico. I envy the safety and security the Russian people have in their lives.
My retail experience says these people will need rent subsidies. To pay rent plus run a business, buy the next season products, the sales would have to be 3000 usd a day for a little small shop like cheese gift shop. And you can make up the difference in the holidays. It looks like an uncertain future…take up back closer to Jan 1

15:55 Appreciate the explanation Russell! Apology accepted. It's fine in this case because there were Western brands that self-sanctioned, so we can see which ones have really left and if there are any left. Saying there were sanctions on supermarkets (in previous videos) was a bit silly though. And of course there were no government sanctions on retail brands, it was their customers that forced them to withdraw, or risk being associated with financing of the SMO, which no brand would want to risk.

Some observations:
1) There are not many people in the mall despite the fact that it is so close to Christmas and the upcoming New Year holiday.
Also, online shopping is very popular and easy to order online, then try on ordered clotves in nearbystoreand if not fit, chsnge size and get proper one instead of get it shipped, then return back by mail like in US
@@ladybug2x2y22z How come videos of the same time last year show far more people shopping?
This could be just shopping habits change. Online shopping and home delivery are much more convenient) My "shopping" in such malls is mostly for clothes, and I would go to a mall to feel the fabric, to tty them on, but I'll take a couple of days to think if I really need this item in my wardrobe, cause I do have more than enough already)) and then will just order it online (usually comes cheaper as well) in most cases I'll just order a selection online and try them on at home while the courier waits and decide which ones I want to keep
@@JenTHEngChannel I think we all like to do that but do you think that is all the people that are in the mall are there for? Are they then going to go home and order online after seeing and feeling it in person at the mall?

Russell.

I just came out of a shopping mall in Prague, a city that is just one tenth the size of Moscow. The traffic was 10 times bigger inside. This mall here smells like a bankruptcy.
I had the same impression that it looks quite empty but it might just be a quiet time.

What business one can do in a country where retail sales are falling dramatically and soon mobile phones will stop working.

Hi Russell , what is marketing and advertising like in Russia .
You know in the West we are inundated with billboards , commercials on TV ,, radio , social media ,newspapers etc .
It's relentless and everywhere , in your face and in your mind 24/7 .
What is the pace like for Russian consumerism ?
Thats a pretty deep question for someone who doesn't watch local tv or can read or understand Russian. Of course, there are ads and billboards on the roads and highways, a lot of people like to do online shopping here, so the different companies push people to shop that way. Russell.
Of course, we have advertising & so on, because advertising is the engine of trade 😁
but I think that there are not as many ads as it could be 😊
@@TravellingwithRussell Thanks Russell .I was wondering the marketing and advertising in country towns and villages , regional areas would be closer to non existent from other videos I have seen on Russia on You Tube .I'm asking because in Soviet times there wasn't any and I was curious how it is today .
@@farangutan6773 It's just full of it everywhere. It became a little less when multinational brands left.

Li-Ning is a popular Chinese brand actually, so they seem to simply have taken over Nike's spot in this mall :)
I might have to take a full walkaround in there, to look at some of their styles. Russell.

Thanks God, I bought mostly all gifts online, but still I will need to go shopping offline for some gifts soon. And it makes me a bit nervous - there will be too much people.
And I surely need to buy food on New Year earlier then on 29-31 of Desember, but I still need to buy meat at the same day I will cook it. Ohhhh nooooo… 😮 But I would like to walk in shopping malls, because they are decorated very cool, and I love that atmosphere.
You're welcome as always. My wife was just telling me the same thing about shopping before the holidays also. She also likes to buy from our local butcher to get fresher meats as well. Russell.
@@TravellingwithRussell I just want to cook turkey 🦃 on New Year, and I saw it in couple shops near our home, but not at local butcher shop… Still, local shops are not the same as shopping malls, and it wouldn’t be so crowded (I hope).

Hhehehehe. No, this was in Aviapark, Russia's largest shopping mall.
