- In this very old short recording, Chick confides with Dick how he turned down Bowling for Dollars until a horrifying life event occurred during the off-season with the Lakers. He then accepted the job because he desperately needed something to occupy his time and mind. On a side note, this is the only footage of Chick on Bowling for Dollars known to exist.
Even though I am a die hard Celtics fan, listening to Chick Hearn call the Laker games when I lived in California was a highlight I will never forget!
Chick is the nicest man . He was so kind to speak so long with my son and I after a laker game he just broadcast to Los Angeles.
I was honored and thrilled that Chick said my name on Bowling For Dollars as I was a Pin Pal and the bowler who drew my name from the postcard hopper bowled two strikes and won the jackpot! That was 50 years ago yesterday
On Los Angeles TV Station KTLA-TV Channel 5, "Bowling for Dollars" hosted by Chick Hearn from Tuesday, July 4, 1972 to Friday, September 3, 1976 and then Jim Lange from Monday, September 6, 1976 to Friday, March 4, 1977.
After a nearly year hiatus, the show returned on Los Angeles TV Station KHJ-TV Channel 9 from Monday, February 27, 1978 to Friday, September 15, 1978 with Chick Hearn returning as host for the final six months plus three weeks additionally.
When the show was on KTLA 5, it was taped at the station's Golden West Studios (later Tribune Studios). I don't recall Jim Lange hosting the show. When it was revived on KHJ 9, it was taped at the Grand Central Bowl in Glendale which had lanes on both sides. Grand Central closed in 1990, but the building is still there and is an office. I wonder if anyone has full episodes of the Chick Hearn and Jim Lange hosted versions.
“Wouldn’t make it to Pomona”. God bless ya Chick. Dang funny.
Great voice of the NBA,especially the LA Lakers. Before that he helped Milton Berle hosted a bowling show where strikes count, nothing else and it was sponsored by bowling products as well as cigars. And 1 bowler won the jackpot of over 50,000 thousand dollars
Chick was cool❤
Glad chick gave his life to Jesus Christ. See you up in heaven soon chick.
