This was the first World Series I ever watched. Clemente was outstanding.

I saw him play at Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium. He once hit a line drive that broke Bob Gibson's leg. Almost never swung at the first pitch. He had an arm like a rifle - maybe the best throwing arm in baseball for an outfielder. Excellent defensive right fielder. Fast and savy base runner. Finished career with exactly 3,000 hits and tragically died at a young age in a humanitarian effort. A very proud man. Excellent hitter, who could often come up with the timely hit to drive in runs. The Pirates were a very good team with excellent players during Roberto's years with the team. A complete player.

I was 11 years old in 1971 and watched the WS and what a series he had! I saw his last hit on channel 9 in New York as Clemente hit a double to left center off Jon Matlack as Cleon Jones the Met left fielder threw it in to second base. I remember it like it was yesterday. In 1969 what a batting title race! Yo make a long story short. Pete Rose won the batting title with a .347 average Roberto second with a.343 average and Cleon Jones came in Third with a.340 average. Cleon Jones is my favorite Met of all time. BTW I read the book Clemente in high school in 1979 and I recommend it!⚾⚾⚾

And he was 38 years old as World Series MVP... in an era when most retired long before that age. He was my hero as a kid... I was in the 12th row at Three Rivers to see his final hit (his 3,000th) before he died.

In 1955 the Pirates paid $4,000 to the Dodgers for Clemente. For each $1,000 spent, Clemente returned a batting title and 3 Gold Gloves. The best deal in MLB history.

Clemente, a true five tool player, and vastly more clutch than some of the more famous names, such as Mays, Bonds, and Ted Williams. Clemente may be the most underrated baseball player in history.

I remember this World Series. Clemente had a 14:game WS hitting streak. He played just 14 WS games, and lost his life before getting a chance at the record of 17 (Hank Bauer).
I cried when #21 died, Jan 1973.

Clemente’s brilliant play in the 1971 stands out foremost in my memory banks. In the 60s Willie Mays was asked who the greatest player was (I assume he was asked to exclude himself, standard practice). His immediate answer was Roberto Clemente, and Willie backed up his answer by discussing RC’s many talents.

Even when remembering that heartbreaking 71 series, its still fun to look back on. 71 & 79 we were up on the pirates both times and couldn't close it out. Clemente played probably the greatest world series ever against my O's! It was heartbreaking 😂😂😂

RC's swing was so unorthodox. Stride was very long; front foot stepped in the bucket; stood far away from home plate as he could get; and look at the size of that bat! He was extraordinary.

As Roger Angell wonderfully describes in the Ken Burns Baseball documentary, Roberto waited a long time for this World Series and he seemed to be saying to his critics and the world: "Take that! Take that!" Yes, Clemente was just magnificent. What a marvelous player, what a great man.

My dog tore the cover off of my prized 1971 autographed baseball ⚾️ signed by 9 or 10 Pirates 🏴‍☠️ players and coaches. He ate Roberto’s autograph ✍️. As a kid, I watched him sign my baseball. Fun fact: I was at 3 Rivers with my older sister when Roberto Clemente got his 3000 hit. What a baseball player and what a man. Thank you Roberto #21 forever

I believe Roberto was originally a Brooklyn Dodgers prospect, playing for their minor league team Montreal Royals. For some reason things didn’t work out and he soon found himself in the Pirates organization. If only he had stayed….

I always thought Clemente was as good as Wlliie May's. He played in tough hitter's ballparks for much of his career (tiii Three Rivers Stadium). Great fun to watch.

Willie Mays was not the only greatest 5 tool player. If Clemente had lived longer, he would have broken all of May's except for home runs. I was a fairly good high school player in Pittsburgh and one of my dreams was to step on a Pirates field and learn from the "Great One."

Ten cent head! His ego wanted the stats , so he cheated. Who's to say Jr. Couldn't have ecplised his record if he juiced?
