  • Welcome to The Valhalla Studio. Last week, Father's Day was creeping up fast so I decided to make some Extra Chunky, Live Edged, Bookmatched Olivewood Coasters.
In this video you see me build these coasters using primarily my Rexon Tablesaw with it's crosscut sled, and a Makita Router.
This is the first time I've made coasters so it was a little bit of trial and error. They could probably be half as deep as they turned out but to save any potential waste I cut them on the thicker side. Next ones will likely produce double from the same size lump of wood, but they won't be nearly as chunky, and to be honest, I quite like them.
You will see me set up a make shift router table by clamping my router to my bench and screwing a piece of MDF to it's base. I, personally, found this to be an effective method, but I understand that this is a risky move. If a clamp pops out, or the surface was to move, I could very quickly lose thing I can't regrow. But I'm confident in how well my clamps work, I kept an eye out for any movement in the MDF, and with such small uncomplex pieces, I was quite confident doing this.
It took me a couple of attempts to make the holder, after the first couple of fails I kinda rushed the last one. The coasters fit pre-finish, but as soon as everything had a coat of the hard wax oil the gaps shrank and barely any of the coasters would fit in it without damaging them. So I thought it best to keep the holder and send the gift without.

It came out stunning, as soon as I cut it open I thought it would make a beautiful jewelery box or something similar. I have a local supplier with loads of it so there will be more, for sure!

Hey, thanks! 😀 He keeps a close eye on me, isn't a fan of closed doors in the house either but I try to keep him out while operating the power tools 👍
