Hey buddy! I'm in Bangor where that axe was forged. That wedge most likely would have seen hundreds of cords of white pine and ash,, with a little maple / oak / birch / beech thrown in

This handle came out great, let alone for a first handle! It pairs well with that head also. Hopefully a bandsaw finds its way into your tool collection because I'd love to see you continue to make more. Great job!

Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words !! It’s funny you mention the band saw because the week after I posted this video I went to an estate sale I picked up a 14 inch stand up bandsaw for 100 bucks !!! I can’t wait to make another handle it was a great experience, very humbling 👍

Hell yeah man, I’ve been looking at the piece of wood for so long. I’m like one day man one day I’m going to find the right pattern. I didn’t want to try and wing it my first time.

Before I got a bandsaw I used to drill along the outline do one hole leave maybe a quarter of an inch of space or less if you want to then when your done with that grab a hammer and a chisel and start a cracking. For me it just cracked all along the outline easily. Take it slow though to you get it. Amazing video as always!

Few things. First, EXCELLENT JOB! That turned out great! Looks better than my first handle!
Also, hickory it a tough wood. I usually go at it with an angle grinder and a 36 grit t-29 flap disc to help remove the bulk of the material. You will be able to go from a handle blank to a thin, roughed out handle in about 10 minutes.
Also if you have a saw zall, get a Diablo 6” pruning blade and that will be a decent substitute for a bandsaw. Those pruning blades are amazing. You can easily cut blanks out with them. And I’d invest in a Shinto rasp. You won’t be upset about it. Might try to get your hands on some softer wood, like elm or hackberry. That material is significantly easier to shape a handle out of.
My first handle took me around 6 hours to make and didn’t turn out great. Yours looks like it’s well done and comfortable! Great video sir.

Thank you so much Matt !! And thank you so much again for that awesome piece of wood 🤙… dang that’s a great idea I never thought to grab the sawzall, thanks for the great tips. It’s funny because the day after I made this handle I happened to pass an estate sale and they had a 12” stand up craftsman bandsaw that was pretty much brand new and I picked it up for 100 bucks 👍

I bet it splits excellent. Seems to chop pretty well also at least from the video. Another great video Joey! Thank you Sir. If you ever want to part with an axe you dont like that much I'd love to actually own a decent axe.

Thank you so much !! Since this video I’ve used it a few more time and yes this axe is a splitting fool 👍 and as far as axes for sale, I don’t sell axes too often but I do have some I would be willing to part with. Also keep your eye out because I plan on doing a give away soon !!

Thank you so much for watching !!! Funny you mention that. The weekend after I made this video I went to an estate sale and the guy happened to be a wood worker. A bunch of stuff was already sold but i was fortunate enough to buy a band saw and a draw knife 👍

@940joey2 Yeah if you look at my handle making process I'm wishing I had a bandsaw. The hard parts over now just the head seating and final shaping.

I do the relief cuts, but use a carving axe for chopping the rough shape

Oh awesome that’s a great idea !! Never thought of that, it probably would have went a little quicker than the little wood chisel !!

    Good video.
Bandsaws are great, but a decent one, even used is fairly expensive. The bearings & alignment guides can be chowdered up too among other things.
For rough shaping handles I think you'd be just as well served by a 120v jigsaw. In construction, they're not typically a very used/heavily used tool, but one that most contractors still need for occasional use. The second hand market has a ton of lightly used good 120v ones. (They're also pretty affordable brand new.) Most models will tilt 45° or more which can also reduce shaping steps.
They're considerably less money, less real estate, less maintenance, cheaper wide assortment of blades.
Also bandsaws can be awkward when feeding/steering longer boards.
Yeah man I really have to strongly suggest you consider the Gentlemans Sawzall.

Thank you so much for watching !! It’s funny because the weekend after making this I picked up a mint condition stand up band saw at and estate sale for 100 bucks !! Also it’s funny you mention jig saw and sawzall because I have both of those tool ones my garage and if I was being completely honest, they never once crossed my mind lol !! Thank you so much for watching and for the advice !!
