I really liked Barry Keoghan's role in Banshees of Inisherin. Portraying a dull person is not always easy and it was a real pleasure to watch him nail it

I always love to see Barry Keoghan, he's one of my favourite young actors right now. I mean, he mostly played side-characters so far, but the films always do benefit from them!
Absolutely, the final scene he's in with Siobhan is heartbreaking, both are so good in it.
He wasn’t necessarily playing dull in my opinion but more playing a dumb character that I found pretty impressive to see
He is playing the emperor in gladiator 2, lol' paul mescals playing Lucius.
I think everyone in NOPE nailed some unreal level of character and nuance in unsettling circumstances, but the dynamic of Keke and Daniel as seemingly siblings with two different kinds of brains was so startling to watch because of how true it felt to people I know in real life.
Keke was so much fun in the movie that I really hope another director gives her a role where she can shine.
I'm satisfied with Paul Mescal's success. From Normal People to Aftersun right now that earned him an Oscar nomination, it's clear to say that he's definitely one of the most promising young actor working today
He will get a BAFTA eventually, that's for sure. Insane an American actor got the win at this BAFTAs and not him...
so good in Normal People. cannot wait to see him in more stuff

Stephanie Hsu was to me one of the most surprising stars of 2022, her performance in Everything Everywhere was so incredibly grounded and emotional, while at the same time being super fun and an immense presence in the movie
She was the standout in that film for me. Surprising and disappointing she didn't get more notice, considering how much attention that film got.
She was alright, Movie was awful though ngl def did not deserve any Oscars

Just remember, Jake G in Nightcrawler is snubbed at Oscars. And if comparing young generation actors, Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit is astounding. So in my honest opinion, Stephanie is a great up and coming actress but too early for what you wanted.

I thought the little girl in Aftersun was spectacular. The chemistry and ease between the two of them was so important in engaging me in the film. Aftersun broke my heart, because I loved that girl so much.
Tang Wei and Park Hae-il in Decision to Leave both contributed incredibly nuanced emotional performances in that film. Sure it's a fantastic film all round, but the performances are really what pushes the film forward for me

Absolutely! Their performances tend to get overlooked by the film making itself, specifically the cinematography. The film would not have hit as hard, or felt as conflicting to watch at times, if not for their performances.
100% Tang Wei gave my personal favorite performance of the year. She stole every scene she was in. She and Park Hae-il did an amazing job at selling this twisted romance.

Thank you for mentioning "The Quiet Girl" cast. It was one of my favourite films of 2022, and while the story is simply told, you grow to care for the three main characters, Cait, Eiblhin and Sean, and want them to find happiness. You immediately believe in their bonds and connections with each other.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and I watch a lot of movies. Such a beautiful, simple story, very well written, amazing performances. Great cinematography, and the 1.37:1 aspect ratio was a nice touch. I got to see it at the end of last year and it still made me emotional weeks after I saw it, which is very rare. I'm definitely gonna see it again once it finally gets a theatrical release in the Netherlands next month.
It was brutally overlooked at the Oscars. One of the most moving and important films I've ever seen, let alone 2022.
Truly amazing film. Saw it twice in theaters recently, it's just so beautiful.
It's also such an important film for the Irish film industry, more so than even Banshees.
Never thought I'd see such an incredible film as gaeilge and I really hope it inspires more confidence in Irish language productions. I feel like quality media and art is essential to the revival of the language and this is imo easily the best thing I've ever seen in my own tongue.
also i had family working on set so its also really cool to see it recognized for personal reasons
I'm always a bit disappointed at the fact that the performances in Nope don't really get brought up too often, other than just to say they were underwhelming. Everyone in that movie did an incredible job, I personally really loved Steven Yuen's performance as Jupe though. He managed to make a character who really only had about 20 minutes worth of screentime in a two and a half hour long film and made him one of the most memorable parts of it.
I've never not been impressed by Yuen to be honest.
The only actors that I didn’t like were Brandon Perea and Michael Wincott but only because their characters were written pretty hammy. I’m sure they’d be great in other roles.

@@ThomasFlight His range is uncanny - I rewatched I Think You Should Leave and forgot he was in that show and even though it was a short comedy bit, carried it just the same. His comment in the roundtable he did with the other NOPE actors and Jordan Peele about playing Jupe was like climbing inside of a robot with 20 layers really stuck with me in terms of like, embodying a role. I think he really takes this stuff seriously but also has a huge sense of "play."
because Nope is an overrated movie
I really liked Stephanie Hsu's performance in eeaao, I think she didn't get the credit she deserved as a struggling daughter and an over-the-top but intimidating villain, in the shadow of the more experienced /well-known actors. I was glad she got nominated and consequently earn the recognition she deserved.
The Daniels got amazing performances from everybody, and i found Hsu especially impressive. What a character, what an actress. Groundbreaking
One film I would like to add is Close. Both of the boys were so natural at portraying inner turmoil & pain. The parents also delivered a gut wrenching performance that got my whole theater in gasping tears.
Indeed - it is rare that the line between the actor and the character entirely vanishes at that age. I had to watch the Cannes footage to convince myself that both were fine.
Truly amazing child actors
Mia Goth has very quickly become one of my favorite actors. She floors me in every movie I've seen with her so far.
She reminds me so much of Shelley Duvall 😊

What blows my mind is to know that her grandmother is a very known actress here in Brazil, she's always playing in soap operas as supporting characters, and i always spotted her talent in these, specially because there's plenty of bad actors in soap operas, and after watching Pearl and have my mind blewn by it, i've read Mia is her granddaughter and it melted my brain

Cate Blanchett once again proved with 'TAR' that she's a league of her own. Undoubtedly, the best living actress.
Actually I really dislike her in TAR. I also think she's overrated, because she does a lot of overacting, and has a very forced accent unlike many other Brits/Aussies who have the American accent down much better. The only really impressive role she did was in Blue Jasmine, where she played a narcissist who is constantly performing and contriving her emotions, which oddly worked because it's impossible for Cate Blanchett to appear otherwise.
@@zxbc1 Geez well safe to say you dislike her, period. Youre probably one of the i people in the entire world who are unable to see her massive talent. Shes one of the best of her generation, and she was AMAZING in Tar. Too bad you just cannot apreciate it :(

@@pepperpattynaise I don't dislike her in general, I just think she's overrated. She's a B-tier actor who has some great PR due to certain roles (like in LotR) but personally her best roles were in Carol and as mentioned above Blue Jasmine. I thought she was okay in the new Nightmare Alley too but in almost everything else she gives off a very stagey actor vibe. Even in Carol, she was outdone by Rooney Mara, who was still fairly new at the time.
I also think Tar is overrated. I am a huge fan of Todd Field but this one disappointed me. Maybe because I have some music education and am a hobby musician and know quite a few classical musicians, there are a lot of elements in the movie that just feel fake and lazy. I also just don't find the Lydia Tar character very interesting to begin with (both as a real person and a dramatic invention).
It's okay to have differing opinions, too, btw. Just because I don't worship her doesn't mean you have to attack me and denigrate contrary opinions to feel safe.
Speaking of criminally underrated performances, Eden Dambrine and Emilie Dequenne in "Close", and Tang Wei in "Decision to Leave".

@@lucasallen772 he feels relatable and profound while portraying silent nonchalant acting, it's not easy to keep the viewer's attention when your character is not outgoing and showy but he manages it so well.

Daniel Kaluuya is rapidly becoming one of my most “I want to see this movie because they’re in it” actors. What I finally came to was it’s his performance is why I repeat watch Get Out and Nope. That and Jordan Peele’s direction.

Tang Wei from Decision to Leave was one of my favorite performances. She is a big reason why that movie is so mysterious and compelling
Kerry Condon was the standout performance for me last year. My two fav films from last year were the vastly overlooked The Quiet Girl, so happy u mentioned it, and Living. I agree about Daniel K. What a range and talent. Also the two actors, Wood and Sharp, in Living.
I really love videos like this. Not just the videos appreciating the winners but also the one that stands out. Paul Mescal’s performance was mesmerizing and shows how far an actor can act with such little emotions nor movements to show. Definitely one of if not the greatest performances I’ve seen in the last half a decade.
Thank you for shouting out Diego Calva’s performance in Babylon! I was very impressed, especially considering this was his first big film. I can’t wait to see what he does next!
Cool to see Babylon getting some recognition. I felt it was full of fantastic performances. Had a blast with the characters and then felt genuine sorrow at the climax.

i hadn’t seen a lot of daniel kaluuya movies before nope and i was blown away with his performance. he perfectly portrayed and brought depth to such a character that could easily be written off as “underwhelming” if you’re used to more emotional performances. seeing him in judas and the black messiah afterwards was really jarring at first bc i was so sold on his nope performance
Cate Blanchett is one of the best actresses ever. I saw her in Manifesto, a video installation by German artist Julian Rosefeldt, 2015 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal. She personifies many different characters. I highly recommend it!
It's crazy good, she has 13 different characters with each unique quality. I don't think anyone could have pulled it out so convincingly

Thomas, I love how you approach a lot of your videos. Let’s talk about great things because they are great.
I don’t get anything from destroying a flawed piece of art for its flawed nature, besides maybe a shallow sense of satisfaction in having my biases and perception confirmed. But dissecting and highlighting greatness, to me, is not only valuable, but also inspiring. And it hopefully influences others to strive after similar quality.

Honestly surprised you talked about the acting in Aftersun without mentioning Frankie Corio's performance. She had such great chemistry with Paul Mescal. Another underrated performance by a younger actor was Eden Dambrine's gut-wrenching performance in Close. IMO, he should've gotten at least a Best Actor nom despite his age.

Great video Thomas, I'm really happy to see An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) getting a mention here, it was easily my favourite film of last year and one of the most touching I'd seen in quite a while. It's also incredible to see any Irish-made film achieve such prominence, let alone an Irish-language film.
Andrea Riseborough in "To Leslie" was one of my favourite performances of the year.
It just felt so raw and true, like I was spying on her private life instead of watching a performance within a movie.
I watched Emily The Criminal, and Audrey Plaza was fantastic in that film. I enjoyed the movie, but what stood out to me was Plaza’s performance

I watch a lot of your videos and I love learning about filmmaking in general, I saw you made a couple videos on the Wire and I thought “hey if he says it’s good I’m gonna check it out” and I began to fall in love with the show. I'm genuinely happy to hear such wide praise in general for Taylor Russell in Bones & All (have yet to watch it myself). My discovery of her was through Trey Edward Shults' "Waves" from 2019, where she gave one of the most nuanced and emotional performances in recent memory for me, in a film already imbued with an amazing acting ensemble. It sounds like both her performances share the same fantastic qualities, so if you found her the highlight of B&A, then I highly recommend Waves.
Waves is solid! Bones and All is great but fair warning it's very violent.
Same, I didn't know how to feel about B&A even though I liked the concept, but the performance of the two leads really made it work for me.
She’s a unique presence among current young actors. Bones and All is a great platform for her. All of its casting choices are inspired, and it’s a very precise, particular movie in general.

Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway is definitely the Best Support Actor of 2022 to me. the subtle nuance performances are so much underappreciated.
Ram Charan and JR NTR in RRR, Song Kang Ho in Broker, Park Ji-min in Return to Seoul, Tang Wei in Decision to Leave, Anamaria Vartolomei in Happening, Natalia Solián in Huesera, Mary Rylance in Bones and All, Eden Dambrine in Close, and the entire casts of Women Talking and Official Competition all deserve shoutouts for their wonderful work.
You know it’s a great film and even better acting when you forget it’s a film and you feel like you’re just sat with them talking and listening.
Interesting note on Tar's hypocrisy/false virtue: During the audition scene, she recognizes the woman she ran into in the bathroom while she's auditioning because of the way her shoes sound. Initially, I thought this was an error in how true the film felt, because orchestras will put down carpeting during blind auditions so that you can't hear what type of shoes the musician is wearing (this is because someone noticed that if judges heard the clack of high heeled shoes worn by women, they'd judge the audition more harshly, resulting in less women getting into orchestras). I called it out initially, thinking a woman like Lydia Tar would want to tear down a barrier that could harm women in music, but by the end of the movie I realized this was an incredible subtle hint at her internal hypocrisy. Just a genius little detail that shows how well researched that movie was.
I knew Tar would be on the list, and the comparison to a giant like Orson Welles is well merited. Have you thought about doing a piece on his role as Harry Limes in The Third Man? It's so iconic, and is the heart of the whole movie, despite it only being a 3min scene.
I talk a little bit about that exact scene in my Nebula video on Screen Presence. But I absolutely adore that scene, I've only seen the movie twice but I've watched that scene countless time haha.

If you love that scene, you might be interested in learning that the whole movie is considered such a cult classic in Vienna, that it's still regularly shown in cinemas to this day :)
@@ThomasFlight Totally agree. Just the way he delivers "the cuckoo clock" is pure cinema gold. Somehow those three words encapsulates everything about that character.
I would mention Rebecca Hall in "Resurrection". That one shot... omg
But I also love Blanchett, Farrell, Craig, Kaluuya, Goth, Condon, Taylor Russell, and Rory Kinnear in the movie "Men". And, of course, "The Quiet Girl" is a masterpiece.

Her performance goes beyond these nowadays favouritism industry awards. If it was about merit, no one came close to what Blanchett had done in TAR. It’s performance that’s for the books

@@rics1883 well, your actor friends are wrong. She gave a master class in overacting--and, to add to her repertoire, overconducting.
My main one is Danielle Deadwyler from the film, Till, which I honestly thought was one of the best movies of last year and it’s almost criminal that it received no nominations from the Academy.
Two performances to me stand above so many others: Hong Chau in The Menu, JFC what an imposing presence at all times, haunting even. The other belongs to David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown because there IS no words for him to speak, it is all emoted vivaciously eschewing every facet of emotion, truly brilliant!
Cate Blanchett is untouchable.

I just saw The Quiet Girl a couple of weeks ago, it was the first film I'd seen in Irish and I loved the sweetness and thoughtfulness of it
Stephanie Hsu has to be up there for me. I just remember her stealing the scene every single time she was on screen in EEAAO, she definitely deserved that nomination.
You mentioned my favorites of the year for film (Blanchett and Condon), but one series that is really under discussed is the new interview with a vampire adaptation. Jacob Anderson plays a very anguished, layered and conflicted protagonist, and in the context of the story makes you really appreciate what he's doing to make you not really know how reliable he is as a narrator or aware he is of certain flaws or hypocrisies. It's such a great, well written show with surprisingly amazing production and a stellar cast but he in particular really shines. I don't wanna say too much about why I love him as Louie to not spoil anything , but I encourage you to give it a watch and am eagerly anticipating the next season. My other pick is Stellan Skarsgard as Luthen in Andor, probably the most interesting and compelling character in the entire Star Wars universe for me.
There isn't even clear consensus on whether this is a 2021 film or a 2022 film, but Jack Lowden's eloquent performance as the poet Siegfried Sassoon in Terence Davies's Benediction is one of my unheralded great performances of recent times. I caught up with that film after the Oscars, and I can't believe it has been so little-awarded. But then, Davies's stately approach has never been for everyone. I thought Gillian Anderson (in his The House of Mirth) and Rachel Weisz (in his The Deep Blue Sea) also deserved more than they got for those films.
By the way, I'm with you on Mescal and Farrell as favorites among the Oscar Best Actor nominees. When everyone was dueling to the death on Fraser vs. Butler a month ago, I was thinking, no, no, keep looking further down the list.
That's crazy. I know Catherine (the titular Quiet Girl), and I thought it was such a good film that nobody was talking about. Great to hear you mentioning it, and if anyone sees this, go see it!!

Have you watched Stephen Sondheim win his first two Tonys? He won them within minutes, for writing the music and lyrics for _Company_ (the only year in its history that the two were separate awards). He devoted most of his first speech to unrecognized colleagues, like his orchestrator (the Tonys now have an award for Orchestrations and its first recipient was the very man Sondheim was extolling), but he ends with words to the effect of "I don't think much of awards, but it's very nice to win one. Thank you." -- Then, after an overlong introduction to the Lyrics award, he stepped right back onto the stage and said, "It's even nicer to win two."
[He won two more over the next two years, and three more later, plus a lifetime achievement Tony -- but I digress.]
Meryl Streep leapt to her feet to applaud Cher's Oscar win for Moonstruck, despite also being nominated. And Cate Blanchett seems to have spent most of this awards season subtly campaigning for Michelle Yeoh, rather than herself (though I, personally, would still have voted for Blanchett).
My point is: even highly decorated professionals are often ambivalent about their decorations. And you're absolutely right: Excellence doesn't need to be a competition.
Absolutely agree on most of your callouts, especially Daniel Kaluuya. Not only is it great in and of itself, but it makes space for Keke Pallmer's electric performance to really shine through, as I think she's also fantastic.
I'd also add:
- Tang Wei in Decision to Leave. It's an incredibly layered depiction that never feels manufactured by the actress, rather a facade manufactured by the character.
- Rooney Mara in Women Talking. That movie has a bunch of great performances, but for my money, her's is the best. The way she knows the right time to give a small, sly smile instead of saying anything, the attention she demands without ever getting as worked up as some others. Just marvelous.
- Ralph Finnes in The Menu. You might be able to accuse him of doing "a lot" of acting, which would be fair. But I think he does a great job of carrying through a sense of sadness at what he feels he has to do.
- Barry Keoghan in Banshees. The way it's always clear that he's just a LITTLE preoccupied with something else, somewhere between paranoid and depressed. And it pays off so well.
- Viola Davis in The Woman King. Honestly, I liked but didn't love the movie. But she is a complete force of nature. Conveying power and determination and resolve in public, while also showing the signs thar she's wrestling with her own demons in private, as we later learn she is. I think her omission was the biggest snub at the Oscars, although I admittedly haven't seen Till.
- Lashana Lynch, also in The Woman King. She's so much FUN. And she's able to simultaneously embody a fun loving person, a stern mentor, a badass, and someone who really cares.
I feel like we forgot about how intense Alexander Skarsgaard was in The Northman. Wanna talk about dedication to a role? One of the best performances I saw last year imo.
Also Michael Mando in Better Call Saul
Yes, thank you for speaking about The Quiet Girl!! What a stunning and mesmerisingly heartbreaking film; one of my favourites of the year, alongside Aftersun, The Banshees of Inisherin, Decision to Leave, and Emily
Fantastic list, but I regret that non-English performances are often overlooked. Anamaria Vartolomei as the lead in Happening and Noémie Merlant (supporting) in Paris, 13th District were both fantastic in French speaking roles.
It’s harder to judge how well someone is acting when you don’t understand the language, unfortunately

I was wondering about some cinematic aspects and ended up thinking I really need this one, even though I don't actually shave myself except rare moments of despair and dissociation. This kind of 'porism' is hard to get and I believe this tells also much about your performance: a little chuckle to relax me and then back to your normal narrative-reflective voice that makes me absorb and digest everything you say. I'm really impressed
P/S: To be serious, I was watching your essays all day long and I wanted to say something but simple 'Ah, you're the best!' just didn't feel right. And I'm very glad to see you get paid for your incredible work
I also loved Paul Mescal's performance in Aftersun, but I feel that people don't talk about Frankie Corio enough. I thought she was amazing in this film, which is even more impressive when you consider that she was 12 years old. I feel like the movie almost wouldn't have worked if the two main players hadn't been as good. She also plays with such gentleness, and never kind of lashes out, which would have been worse in my opinion.
Pearl's smile in the end credits is straight nightmare fuel. I had legit shivers go up my spine looking at her.

Barry Keoghan's amazing. For me it's the effortless sophistication that sort of drives the film wherever he's in despite playing side-characters. Diego Calva's performance is also impressive, so glad for him getting recognition. Currently two of my favorite young actors

Rebellion and fighter in black messiah , toxic thug in widows and an urbane at-the-bay-guy in nope .We can easily say his dynamics is truly amazing.

My favorite unsung performance in 2022 actually comes from an Oscar winner: Mark Rylance in "The Outfit." So, so much of this is only in his eyes - you can WATCH him THINKING. I think he's as good as he's ever been in this movie - which also happened to be one of my favorites from last year, and WAY too underseen.

Aftersun is such a brilliant film across the board --Mescal was flawless in his performance. Still can't wrap my head around it being a directorial debut.

Just finished watching your Banshees essay too, and it is, by far, one of the greatest video essays i have watched; maybe I’m biased here as Banshees is becoming one of my favourite films of all time, but this watch was thoroughly enjoyable, your in-depth analysis is incredible and constantly allowed further thought, specifically upon aspects I hadn’t even considered; love your work Thomas, keep it coming!

I really liked this video and your analysis! My biggest frustration with Nope was exactly what you mentioned-Daniel’s acting being deemed “underwhelming”. He portrayed OJ so flawlessly I couldn’t believe this was the same man from Get Out and Widows, not to mention how perfectly he encapsulated the sibling dynamic along Keke Palmer

kerry condon was easily my favorite performance last year, and i’m so glad she was mentioned. I also loved Keke Palmer in Nope. Both of those sibling dynamics felt so real and I think the movies hinged on both of these women’s ability to play off the brother character in a convincing way. Loved the video!

Close without a shadow of a doubt stands out for me. Performances where great and I have not had a film trigger such a visceral reaction in some time. Definitely overlooked in my opinion!

Quiet girl was such a fantastic and moving film. I went to see that movie in Hungary with my girlfriend and even though we didn't understand a single word ( found out that irish is not english haha ), we enjoyed it so much, because the acting and the story was so superb.

Honestly two of my favourite performances from last year were from the two girls in Aftersun and The Quiet Girl. Both showed so much emotion and were incredibly impressive given how young they both are.

Speaking of incredible performances that flew under the radar, shoutout to Sean Harris in The Stranger. A subtle performance of a character who is emotionally repressed and disturbed, full of little physical and vocal nuances that hint to the audience a wealth of psychological subtext.
It’s wild how loaded best supporting actress was this year - and Jamie Lee still managed to win thanks to her campaigning
