  • In this video, Dr. Doug Lucas discusses a specific exercise that is not suitable for individuals with osteoporosis as it does not significantly benefit bone health. Multiple studies have shown that individuals who regularly partake in this exercise have lower bone mineral density compared to high impact athletes and non-athletic controls. However, this exercise is not considered a negative for bone health either. Tune in, as Dr. Doug reviews multiple studies on this topic!

    Great overview- I am not surprised at all with the conclusions of the these studies. The main points that you make at the end are what is important. We just need to get this info out to the younger population as I wish I had focused more on weights and resistance training earlier on.

    TY for your indepth information supported by your expert review of so many studies! I really like how you know how to dive into the studies and dissect whether they are truly accurate or not, and give thoughtful intelligent reasons why/why not. I'm going to keep watching your channel and check out your Masterclass. I've reversed ostopenia on my own, but I want to learn more and continue to do so.

    Great info regarding the danger to long term bone health from swimming. Another sport that is even more detrimental to bone health is cycling. Elite cycling caused my osteoporosis at a relatively young age and led to multiple fractures.
    There are many studies highlighting this risk. One excellent study is titled: "Longitudinal Changes in Bone Mineral Density in Male Master Cyclists and Nonathletes". It showed that 89.5% of male elite masters cyclists developed osteopenia or osteoporosis. 😮

      Well, I like biking for my mental health. I'm not biking at the crazy level anymore. A 15-mile ride 3-4 days a week, occasionally 20 & when I have time, maybe a 25-30 mile ride on a beautiful Sunday! I also do weight bearing exercises, Pilates & I jump rope. I work in my garden doing heavy duty work & work for a lady doing work in her gardens weeding & planting. Keeps me moving & getting some sun. Motion is lotion!

    I have osteoporosis and I swim just about everyday even in winter,living in Florida. I use LARGE fins for resistance and do the breaststroke for one hour straight. No too fast, not too slow, just steady. Sometimes I flip over and swimming backwards, point is to consistently move against the resistance of the water. Switching up my arm movements also. It has helped me immensely. I also take all the vitamin supplements except calcium and eat a low carb diet. I am 66 and NOT on any medication because I took Bonita for about 6 months and my upper back teeth broke off, and when I went to the dentist he asked me if I was taking any osteoporosis medication. I stopped immediately after that and still had cracking teeth for a while after that. My doctor wanted me to try Prolia and of course I said NO. I had to have those 6 teeth removed and have a retainer now. I also exercise with resistance bands.

    Love and appreciate your analysis of these studies. I don’t like the conclusions because I love to swim. My solution to this dilemma is jumping in the pool for a swim as my reward for doing the strength training exercises. 😊

    • @barbs1298
      @barbs1298 29 днів тому

      Yep! Rotation bad for spines with low bone density & bending forward & down not good either. Puts tremendous pressure on the spine.
