  • Here's a short and pretty unscripted take on how I manage and succeed with my ADHD at Harvard in general, while in lecture, studying or doing work, and while taking tests!

    Summary to this video:
    1. Make to do lists and constantly check them throughout the day
    2. Hooks for keys and wallets etc so you don't forget where you put them
    3. To keep focus in class, picture the words that the professor say to keep a track of the lecture and if a random thought appears, just jot it down somewhere so you don't have to deal with it at the moment
    4. Use physical notepad and pen so apps on digitals don't distract you or to stop any kind of temptation
    5. Listen to music while studying as a white noise so that you can stop hyperfixation on people around you
    6. Use pomodoro technique and use apps like tide or forest for it
    7. create fake deadlines so you don't miss the real deadline and procrastinate while not really procrastinate for the real one
    8. For test taking, bring foam ear plugs to tests as plugging them will reduce almost 30 decibels , and sit in the front row
    9. Chew on something in tests so you don't fall asleep

    A little tip for all my ADHD friends: I recommend ambient music, it stimulates my brain in a very different way, for example, I play the slytherin common room ambient music and BAM I feel like I'm in a total different environment which means I'm not bored and can focus on whatever I have to do. Sometimes I play Bloodborne ambient music (or any other horror ambient music) and the chills/adrenaline helps me do so much for longer periods. 😁

      I listen to instrumentals for anything with reading and sometimes writing cuz the words mingle in my head if its worded, but with everything else I do worded at super high volumes and that helps me so much with physics and math. loud worded music that I can tune out is the best controlled kind of focus I have. but I can only use that if I even have enough executive function to begin...and thats pretty rare for homework.

      YES!!!!! I am always told to do stuff like don't procrastinate and study and other "common smart knowledge" but I NEED HELP WITH ACTUALLY DOING THAT. I'm currently trying to figure out how to organize my room without feeling cluttered and know where my stuff is. My parents don't understand that I want to clean my room and stay organized but I don't know how to.

      ellie rue go through your day and keep only the things you actually use! Make sure EVERYTHING has a home and make sure the home makes sense in your mind!

      Keep a really big box of ‘mock trash’ to throw things out that you’re not sure if you might need. Throw it out when it’s full

      I recommend reading How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport. It's unconventional and saves so much time.

      Don't do any other responsibilities like having a full time job while attending school or if you DO need money, do part time during the fall and spring and full time during the summers.
      Also dancing, music, crying, Degrassi, lusting over a character, and Jesus Christ will get you through it 👍🏼
      I haven't been tested for ADHD so I'm not saying this works for ADHD people but I do have a PD, depression, and social anxiety, living in a toxic environment so it's been hard for me to focus and came out with straight A's using those tips...idk how literally...I blacked out through most of it and I also get bored when I have to sit down and do something so I have to listen to music while having a show play in the background as I do my work or I'll get sleepy and bored

    This is inspiring to see a person with ADHD going to a Ivy League. My whole life I felt underestimated since I have ADHD along with a rare math disability (Dyscalculia) and was constantly looked down upon by peers and some teachers. This is so badass and amazing😊😊

      Lol kids at Ivy League schools pop adder-all and Ritalin like their skittles. At least half of Everyone their has an adhd diagnosis and perscription. Dumb kids smoke weed, smart kids pop addys. That’s just how it goes

      Many people who also have ADHD but didn't know it or haven't been diagnosed of it also find their own solutions to deal with it, without even knowing that it was actually because of ADHD haha

    I read recently that academic reading can be particularly difficult for ADHDers. The big books and small type means the many many words can be distracting. In addition to using a ruler or bookmark to narrow the focus, a good strategy is to pace while reading and/ or read aloud.

      I wouldn’t say I find the word distracting? More that it’s too long and loaded that my mind can either wander or I just can’t sustain my attention for a long time

      I find that academic reading can also be super difficult just because it's so boring. Like ADHD means that we can get so bored we just fall asleep. Reading aloud can help a bit, I also wish that academic texts had audiobooks because then I could do stuff with my hands to try and pay attention!

      Amazon ebooks have an option to single out the words so itll only put one word on the screen at a time you can speed it up or slow it down and i find it helpful and a quick way to get tbroufht reading when you just cant gst the groove

    pro tip: try sleep alot earlier the day before an exam/test as it will help you recall better especially if you have adhd

    #1 ADHD tip: Watch everything, including this, at x1.75 speed. The earrings were distracting me so much and I couldn’t focus on the words but at an accelerated speed the background stimuli fades and I can focus.

    I love when she said she works differently and that works for her. Our children need to hear things like that. I remember achieving high in school and still not feeling good enough and or insecure because of how my brain was wired compared to the next. Thank You for helping.

    Honestly, as a first gen student with ADHD it is so hard for me to just learn. I really care about doing well, but never really knew how to go about it especially when you were never taught how to practice good executive function skills. I have even gotten to the point of getting depressed and wondering if college was even for me. This really helps so much you have no idea and I hope others with ADHD find this video helpful as much as I did!

    I just finished middle school and I was never challenged so my adhd went undiagnosed. In eighth grade, I started taking accelerated math and english classes at the community college (kind of like AP). I had to get extensions on my work every week, but everyone just thought I was lazy. Since quarantine started, I have not been able to get the work done. Being out of the school environment was too much for my brain too handle. I finally decided to talk to my doctor and now I am in the process of being diagnosed. These tips were the most helpful ones I’ve found! Thank you!!

      I went through the same thing, except I wasn’t diagnosed until my senior yr of high school. I’m so thankful to see someone go through the same thing as me; I thought my struggle was out of the ordinary but I feel less alone to know someone else had the same experience. Best of luck to you!

      I'm so happy for you that you're getting a diagnosis before college! I didn't get mine until last year. I'm in my final semester of college now and feel like a giant weight is lifted off of me knowing how my brain works now and all the helpful coping strategies that there are online.     So I just recently discovered that the way my brain works isn't "normal" and it's a condition called ADHD. I'm not diagnosed yet but I'm certain I have it. These methods that you mentioned is how I managed to graduate college. Everything makes sense to me now. The music tip has literally saved me back then, I work now and this is how I get stuff done. Btw, your earrings are lovely.

    Thank you so much. Recently I've been feeling rather frustrated at myself and "like a failure" because I was struggling with execution and making small mistakes. It's affirming and reassuring knowing that someone else with a disability is still thriving and in higher edu. I felt very ashamed for a while...Love to you!

    Another tip I would add is: combine the sources of information when learning something. I normally need to look at the same topic explained in my lecture slides, a random book and various youtube videos.
    Then write down what I have learned on multiple places. I write on books (obvs!), multicoloured post it notes ( colours matched to specific topics) and I have two white boards adjacent to each other. Again I try to match different sections with similar colours.
    Furthermore , I have two calendars directly opposite each other. Here I write down important dates such as CW deadlines etc. At the same time I try to write the same dates digitally with periodic reminders (google/microsoft calendars etc). As you know we are not always the best at remembering dates!
    People with technical courses that involve formulas etc. Print out the formulas and have them placed around your study area. As a civil engineering student, I have differentiation/integration laws and Laplace transforms etc.
    Finally, remember it is normal to have off days where you are struggling to cope with all the work. Just chill, let it go for now then come at it with renewed energy!!! You got this!

    This video is a pure example of a really elaborative illustration on how-to.
    I find majority or good advice are the unpopular videos, the videos that are not at the top of the search results, 'how to focus with ADHD' or 'how to study with ADHD'.
    The commercially looking videos with pretty thumbnails always has the same bs advice with NO ELABORATION or personal experience.

    I listen to a lot of instrumental music, and I record lectures and knit in class! It keeps my hands busy, and I can easily put it down to write!

    Big ADHD mood last Friday I was doing a lab and I missed some steps on the written instructions so my code wasn't working and when I asked my TA he said "Why don't you follow instructions? What are you doing???" and I cried for the rest of my lab but I finished it so it's ok

      @@jazmynmain that's me, and my therapist taught me about "unhelpful thinking" which is apparently what that is, also most teachers are aware of different learning needs and good teachers are more than willing to take your questions and feedback!

      I have been struggling since grade 10, I thought it was depression and anxiety. Turns out I was not reaching my potential because of ADHD.

I often seem to think that i am depressed, but i think it might be because i fail to reach my potential which leads to depressive mood etc.

      @@joonatss I'm still working on it, but counseling helps tremendously. Accommodations are also a great tool to use. I was given medication and that has helped with my procrastination the most. Use all the tools at your disposal and someday you will reach your potential.

      Btw, my fav doctor has ADHD. He is the best. I hope you will be the best for other people's too.
      (We talk about ADHD a lot, since one Psychiatry told me to be tested)
      He is my model because I feel connected to him and because I see myself, like representation? Idk. I justo love him so much. He also send me to see a specialist bc my wrist pain, while my pediatrician just told me to rest. And his attitude led me to a better prognostic and etc.
      I'm sorry I overshared, but the point is: I had this deep feeling that you're going to be as amazing doctor as he is 💚🐢✨

    I don't find ADHD medicine that helpful either, it honestly makes me very tired and forgetful. I'm in anatomy and physiology and I failed my first practical, I'm normally an A student. I knew the answer in my head but all of the other definitions I had to learn came racing through all at once and my hand froze, I had no idea what to write. I'm fine in lecture but lab moves so fast and there is no powerpoint so we have to write everything while the teacher is talking and trying to demonstrate a model at the same time, I can't keep up. I think I will take your advice and start recording lectures, thanks for the tips :)

      Oh that's totally happened to me before! In French classes I often freeze and panic and forget everything, that's totally normal! I hope that recording will help you! In classes that move fast like that recording tends to help me because otherwise I'm too focused on trying to make good notes and not writing. I'd still recommend having a paper in front of you just so you can jot down any thoughts that come to mind if you get stuck on an internal loop or if your teacher says something that you think is super important!       it could be that the dosage was too high, I take a very small amount and that helps, but everybody is different

      Oddly enough I had that problem too. Turns out my serotonin levels were also low so pairing it with a low dose antidepressant solved the blah brain fog it gave. Sounds weird, don't know how it works but it does. Its weird feeling as though I can control my own thoughts for the first time in my life... at 30.

    The biggest challenge for me at uni has been academic writing and essays. Im ok with writing itself and usually doing well at exams, but I have a terrible struggle with trying to focus on writing coherently and remembering all the details needed. Especially on how to quote sources and all the technical details. Or trying to make my own conclusions of the texts I barely understand. The whole process of essay writing feels so overwhelming that ive quit most of the courses with an essay and almost dropped out. Any tips?

      If you have a writing center at your university, I highly recommend you take advantage of those resources. Often they have student staff that have been in the same boat and are super helpful. If not, there is probably some sort of department in English that has services like that. Worth sending an English professor or director an e-mail or reach out to your Student Advocates office for guidance.

      I’m so sorry my comment is coming late (typical adhd wow) but my advice is: reach out to any academic counselling your school has firstly. But also write in point form and take hand written notes as ideas come up along the way. I like to come up with my argument/ideas first and make the most bare bones outline of what I want to say on a piece of paper and then flesh it out from there (taking notes bc I switch topics quicky). For citations I recommend getting Zotero! It’s a free software that keeps track of all your citations it’s very helpful!

      use speech to text!!! i always forget what i want to write in a sentence because i’m so focused on picking out “academic” words. i find it a lot easier to keep with the flow of writing if i’m just speaking it. afterwards i go in and edit everything i need to out

    Another tip, if you get distracted by music, some apps like Spotify have white noise or static that can help cancel out other sounds. I use them a lot in class when it’s independent time.

    Thanks! I'm a nearly 40 year old adult who has just completed a 1st year BSc. I think it helps that I am older, if I was in my 20's and worried about a social life or love life, there's no way that I would be able to study, even with meds. (Thank god for meds!) I'm actually loving online classes because my lectures are mostly recorded, so I can pause every 2 seconds to write down notes. I also use an app that transcribes my lectures for me, which I then print out and put with my slide print outs/ notes so that I know I can fill in the blanks when I need to. I definitely struggle more with topics that don't interest me or I find difficult because I vague out and start daydreaming so much. I just have to know myself and when is the best time for me to study and try my best to catch up.

    I just recently became aware that I have ADHD. I struggled w/ severe anxiety so long, and then I found ways and methods to help manage it better. Then one day I don’t remember how I became aware, or what I was doing. It just hit me that I had ADHD!! I knew my son had it, but I never paid attention to his behavior were also my own behavior as well. My son is 13, but extremely smart. I was talking to him after realizing I have the same behavior as he does. The impulsive responses to things, constantly unable to focus on one thing, unable to concentrate, or process things. He immediately said, Dad I know. His response was like, Yeah. I know. I’m like how did you know? He responded you act like me. I’ve never been tested for severe anxiety as a kid, never heard anyone speak of that before until I became an adult and got hospitalized for hypertension and severe anxiety. Yes, it had gotten that bad. The ADHD, I heard about as I got older, but it never crossed my mind that I had it. I knew I had problems learning, but didn’t understand why. I knew I also processed things differently than others people, which I thought was a good thing, because it made me very conscious and observant. When I realized I had ADHD it really helped put a lot of things in perspective for me. It allowed me to understand myself better, and know that I’m not alone, and I’m different, but also very intelligent. Thank you for all the tips and methods.

    This is awesome! I'm a nursing major with adhd. I never usually had to study and I got away with barley paying attention most of the time, but ones I hit anatomy and physiology, that wasn't a option anymore. This helped a lot, best of luck to you.

    Highlight the syllabus and condense the info to 1 page. Have templates for each assignment set up in advance. Have 1 page study guides back to front or create a ring of flash cards. I have to find ways to apply the info to my life in a practical way.

    even though we’re here 3 years later i just need to echo the other comments here in saying thank you for making this video. i really struggle to stay focused during long videos (especially educational ones!) but found myself nodding along to your personal anecdotes all throughout. can’t begin to explain how immensely comforting it is to hear that the techniques you use (making your own CC captions in your head, studying less, jigsaw-piecing essays etc) are ones i use too! i have Real Bad imposter syndrome and always feel the ways i study are wrong. any good result i got i’d be telling myself that i just articulated my words well and somehow bamboozled my professors into giving me a good grade - all because I felt I wasn’t spending enough time studying or going about it in a linear way. so so so comforting to hear that im not alone and that this is just a way we process information and what works for us and that it’s absolutely valid!
    i’ve been to therapists for my ADD but your video is the first one to truly resonate with me - i even whipped out my own fidget cube I had stored away as soon as you mentioned it so I wouldn’t feel tempted to reach for my phone hahahahah
    definitely going to take your tips on board! esp with my online lectures and classes :^) thank you again and i hope your life is doing wonderful! stay safe

    thank you for making this video! i'm a student at dartmouth that got recently diagnosed with adhd, and i've felt a range of confusion/loneliness with how to deal with this and still perform at a high academic level, and this was really helpful to hear! also, you mentioned the medication you took and how that relates to your anxiety and adhd, but I'm the opposite way! I take stimulants which in turn helps my adhd then anxiety, rather than SSRIs helping anxiety first

    This is great. I am 41 and was Dx 3 years ago and finally I am really accepting that I have ADHD. I am on OT prac in a busy hospital and I am struggling with organising my thinking. I have come up with lists and prompts. Just having difficulties with my working memory so I have asked my Equity Dept to advocate for me to have more time to consolidate the information I've been learning and apply it to real people in my caseload. Otherwise I'm struggling to remember everything in the OT process for these beautiful real life people that I don't want to negatively impact

    I've heard this advice in bits and pieces here and there as I'm trying to learn how to utilize my ADHD. Thank you for putting it all together.     one of the biggest things that helped me in school, particularly in math but it applies to every class and especially for online classes, try to remind yourself that there is no one watching you over your shoulder, no one is judging you for the order you work or for how long.

    Wow, literally everything you said is me. I haven't made the time to get diagnosed with ADHD yet, but wow. Especially the writing things out of order. That's been one of my biggest challenges at University and I did not realise that was an ADHD thing - although it makes so much sense! All the other things you mentioned I struggle with too, and I have used similiar solutions. I'm just about to graduate and I really wish I had found this video earlier. I have literally spent my entire degree thinking there was something wrong with me that I was putting in so much effort but getting barely anything done compared to everyone else

    Thank you so much!!! This video have been the single most helpful instructions and tips I've received (in my whole life I'd say), because they are tailored to exactly what I need. I should have seen this 8 years ago when I started to study, maybe I'd be finished with my masters by now, which I'm struggling with atm. My biggest challenge / what I've until now been incapable of are assignments: at Vienna University where I study we have this format of assignments which are like 25-35 pages dealing with one specific topic/question. It has so many steps of planning and building the chapters logically and creating a stringent thread, which in my head and explaining to my friends I'm very capable of, but putting it on paper is really hard.

    Weirdly enough I will get distracted by random noises during class but not during tests because during tests my brain becomes superbrain and I’m like sucked into a deep hyper focus and I love that, I hope I’m not jinxing myself rn
    Also I just found out that I have adhd last October, sadly I dropped out of Highschool right before that because I was so overwhelmed and stressed with everything and I tried to do it like everyone and it never worked for me and I didn’t know why, I’m going back to school next semester and I’m hoping that by working with my adhd I will be able to succeed in graduating. It’s a different Highschool and everything so I’m scared but I can do it. Anywho I hope everyone is doing well mentally and has a great day :)

    If any of you guys are Disney parks people, I recommend looking up like "Magic Kingdom loop" or something similar and you can get the instrumental music loops that they play at the parks. Hits me right in the feels, especially during the pandemic.

    Not too long ago, my psychiatrist confronted me with the idea that I might have ADHD. I'm seeing a psychologist to confirm the diagnosis in December this year. Until then, I'm gathering all the information on how to deal with this without medication or therapy. I've spend so much time researching productivity methods, motivation hacks, etc. resulting in little success. This video actually provided some new insights & ideas on how I can help myself - I just ordered a huge deskpad for jotting down my racing thoughts (some of which are important to do's that otherwise get lost) & am already looking for fidget toys! Thank you so much for sharing.

    it’s not that i can focus it’s more like i can’t find motivation to do something it’s like impossible for me to see the end game so i end up procrastinating and never doing it. it sucks having adhd like why was i born this way i’d rather have diabetes than having adhd

    Thank you so much for your video. It’s been such a good guide and very helpful. It’s very hopeful to see another person with adhd succeed and do well in school. Its to often that people with adhd are labeled “lazy” despite their best efforts. I come back to this video time and time again when I need a little bit of school hope : )

    Two things I find very helpful are repeating very slowly what I've memorized, I find that by doing this my brain stays more on the meaning of each word and doesn't view them as just sounds; the other thing is to reformulate long sentences or difficult ones into ones that I can easily come up with, it helps me not get frustrated when my brain views long sentences like a mess of ink!

    Thank you for this! I just recently found out I likely have ADHD (I'm getting an official test next week) and have been really struggling to find good resources. Unlike some people with ADHD who struggled academically as a kid, I never had issues until this year when I started college and was unable to continue to compensate by relying on my intelligence and random things I figured out that worked for me.
    Most videos talk mainly about organization which for me isn't my main issue since as a kid I ended up figuring it out on my own. This info will be especially helpful when it comes to trying to keep up with all the readings for my science classes this fall since I always end up spending hours making little progress!
    I'm planning to switch my major back to what I started out in since now that I know what's wrong I can get proper help. Originally, I switched to an easier major because I thought I was too dumb for science. Turns out, I wasn't! I just needed a little extra help to work with my situation.
    Again, thanks for making this! It's great to see other women with ADHD going to challenging schools and succeeding. It gives me hope!

      Omg I can relate somewhat 🥺 I recently got diagnosed with adhd and I’ve always done really well in school by relying on my really good memory and I’ve never had to actually study for a class until my senior year of high school, which is when I started noticing symptoms. I was definitely capable of the work but trying to focus and manage my time really stressed out and honestly, I was relieved when corona virus canceled my senior year! I actually never suspected I have ADHD and the reason I went to a psychiatrist was because I became depressed, and it surprised me when I got diagnosed with both depression and ADHD! Anyway I’m currently trying out new medications and hopefully I can find the right ones before I start college next fall!

I had a similar experience where I was struggling for the first time as a freshman in college and like you was kinda grateful for corona because it made things easier. I'm not sure where you're headed but, my college has a learning center where you can meet with tutors and learning specialists who help you devise plans for how to study effectively. I've been talking to someone who specializes in ADHD and I recommend doing the same if your college offers that. It's really helpful! Also, just be patient with yourself. I've reduced my course load (dropped a class) in the past and although at first it made me feel like a failure, I later realized it actually was the right choice because it allowed me to work a lot better in my remaining classes.
      I also got diagnosed a similar way. I've dealt with depression and other mental health stuff on and off for the last few years and decided to go to therapy. Thankfully I was able to see a psychiatrist who picked up on my ADHD too. I finally got diagnosed a week ago. Mental health stuff can be hard but you've got this! Don't be afraid to ask for help and take breaks when needed. Best of luck with finding a medication that works! I'm currently doing the same thing.

    grrr...my ADHD is so bad that I only lasted about 5 minutes watching this before I forgot what I was doing and moved on to cleaning the cat fountain and giving my kittens treats 😕even watching a movie that I am totally interested in must be done in short increments. Luckily, my job involves working with a lot of different things in a rapid pace.

    Wow I am only seeing this for the first time in 2021 lol. I just wanted to comment because you totally remind me of Janet Montgomery !! She is a stunning actress who plays Dr Lauren Bloom in New Amsterdam and in the show she has ADHD. I remember this scene where she arrives home and hangs up her keys on a magnetic hook on the fridge the second she walks in the door. I since implemented the hook idea then hear you talking about this too. Thank you SOOO much for these incredibly helpful tips!! I feel so much less anxious after watching this.     I struggle so much with my ADHD but I recently started taking a look at what routines I have and working with them. Taking dopamine breaks has helped. I do all the things you mentioned so watching your video helps me feel I am on a path that's working for me. I also have a small trashcan in places where u often leave trash pieces. I also empty out my bag when I get to home or school to ensure I have what I need and I'm working to have a set spot and label for where everything goes. I also use soft deadlines to allow me to procrastinate because its stressful but I work best and am most creative and I like those creative bursts very much. Thank you for this video.

    always make list where you can find them easily later.
    constantly check notes.
    keep everything in place so that you won't lose it.
    Habit minder Iphone app.
    self care.
    use close captioning / subtitle-ing in your head to keep focus/attention.
    don't use laptop in class.
    record audio in class in case you miss something.
    understand first rather than just taking note in class.
    ambient/nature music is helpful for us adhders.

    Finally a video I can relate!.. I also have ADHD 🧡 It had been a struggle for me to learn on a fast phase. Unlike other people I tend to get distracted a lot. Also I am not good in academics and almost flunked my hs senior year but I am exceptional in any art, I love being creative in writing, I even dance, sing, great in cooking & baking. ADHD has been a part of my anxiety for years having it is also frustrating at times because I have no control over it. I took several intensive workshops in photography, filmmaking and acting before because I was working on finding myself and even thought college isn't for someone like me. It had been years of debating between myself. I am now 25 years old and going back to college to finally pursue a degree in BA of Arts majoring in communication arts. One thing I learned from having ADHD is do not rush yourself. Doesn't mean everyone else is faster, it doesn't make them better than you or make you less passionate than them. I am glad there are many people like us finally opening up in the world. 🧡

    I used the same things while I did my masters but it was organic as I wasn’t diagnosed till 10 years later.
    Others things I did:
    1. I would make sure I put myself into a dopamine/hyper focus high for test or papers. I would get a pedicure, massage or workout before so when it was go time, I was ready!!!
    2. I’d also make into a game, can I finish before everyone else in the room?!? How fast can I get through all the task on a syllabus?? GO!

    dammn this video is not made for ADHD way to long... just failed 4 classes in my first freshman semester. love it
