YES!!!! The thumb test or the finger test!!!!!!!!!!! Gdam I have gone thru tons of videos telling you to burn it...jeezus...this is much easier!!!! Thank you!!!!
This test is inaccurate, what you are seeing are wrinkles on high impact areas (areas that are used a lot). Like the arm rest, back rest and seats. The parts that are not being rested on such as the back and sides of the chairs and sofas don't get these wrinkles. Much like human skin lines form over time due to ageing and use.

We just purchased a sofa made with gel leather, we asked the sales associate if it was real leather and they said it was, now that we have the furniture home, after one day of having it I have noticed a very small spot where the fabric flaked off (we re gusseing from our 4 years old toenail), I'm starting to get worried that this is not real leather
You are right, his "spiderweb test" is not an accurate way to test for leather because Bonded Leather (the Pringles of leather) will give near the same spiderweb look. Bonded Leather eventually breaks down when exposed to sweat, oils, UV and cracks along those "webs" and sometimes pieces break off exposing the fabric webbing support. You have to have a trained eye to spot the webbing of real Leather, and the crinkle of Bonded Leather.
Krzysztof Stankiewicz real leather you see a star pattern or what is better known as spidering. On the fakes it doesn't do this. It just indents or depresses on the point of contact. Their are no lines that emanate from the point of depression that resembles a spider's many legs spreading out from all sides.
You can try to do water test on a real leather and faux leather. You will notice that the real leather absorb water much faster than the faux leather:) thats because the faux leather has a plastic on top of it which means the water sits on the surface of the "leather"
What you showed us and said this is leather if you don't take care of it. That was not leather. That was bonded leather and fake. It peels and flakes like that. Leather don't flake like THAT.
My faux leather sofa does that spider web thing, but my real leather jacket from army doesn't do that web thing. Maybe it's due to treatment and quality of leather.
great video - pity I didn't think to look at this before buying my supposed leather recliner! already pealing after 3 1/2 months! I thought the price I paid ensured it would be leather! - not so.
+Gunay Kayahan If it's peeling then it's "bonded" leather. It's made from all the shavings and scraps from real leather being processed ground up with different glues and binders to make a synthetic looking leather. Looks nice on day one, and looks like shit a few months down the line.
+KoolBreeze420 you can try fingernail test you press your fingernail into a leather product's surface. Fake leather will either leave a permanent mark, or no mark at all. Genuine leather will make a mark temporarily, and then smooth out to its previous look.
Very informative. However, full grain leather is actually the best. Rarely furniture is made out of it since it could have surface imperfections. Top grain leather has the imperfections and grain sanded out, and then they stamp a new faux grain on it. Still good leather, just not quite as strong and durable.
Leather is a real minefield with so many misleading terms. The worst being genuine leather. This is the lower half when the leather is split, so its surface is sanded and polished, rather than the outer surface of the hide, Put simply, it is what is trimmed off the back of the expensive 'top grain' hide and has only a fraction of the strength and wear resistance. All leather is completely smooth after the hair is removed and the surface is polished. The grain effect is then produced by rolling the material with high pressure hot rollers. In reality this surface is applied to the skins that are full of blemishes and scars. For a guarantee of a quality product, you need either full or top grain leather with a smooth surface. Avoid bonded leather at all costs, it is simply the dust from the manufacturing process mixed with PVC and rolled into sheets, (the leather equivalent of chipboard timber). About its only sensible use is for car dashboards where proper leather tends to crack due to the heat of sunlight through the windscreen and wear resistance is not required..
Dashboards in cars trimmed in leather have chrome fre ore shrunk leather, tanned differently to cope with high UV and temperatures found under the windscreen area. Standard seat leather, as you say, will crack and pull away from the substrate
totogirl0 have you thought that maybe they use it for when the animal dies or when they have been killed you think what you would rather waste their body and throw in the bin like games have at least when it is used after they are dead the leather would be treasured for a long time
ben moore sometimes the do use it as a by product like you described but a lot of the time it is a co product and in India where they produce leather they put chilli in the cows eyes and skin them alive. Evan if it is a by products like you described it is still animal exploitation, animals are not here for us to use. Also put this in a human context would it be ok to to use a dead persons skin as a chair? Animal exploitation is wrong.
Also it is supply and demand what would I rather? I would rather no animal dies for meat, or animal product and if we don't pay for leather the less animals die.
I did this to my bed sheets and comforter. Turns out they are leather and not Egyptian cotton

I tried doing the leather test on my leather wallet ..... It's not easy to press it.....
Thank you for this great tip. Excited to discover that my new, FREE, leather lounges are real leather on the fronths, tops and arms. Blessings.
Very cool test. So helpful 👍

It’s not
I have a fake leather sofa that does that spider web thing. So I don't think that's a valid 'leather test"

you are right, some fake leather are made by very good method, have very leather-like touch. cannot tell it with easy way.
Do different color leathers have various durabilities?
Colors are just dye on the leather
0:44, 0:55: leather. 3:11, 3:44: not leather
Please clarify what we're supposed to be looking for, because I can't see a significant difference?

I heard some leather has a finish though and it will prevent water from being absorbed too.
Does this work with real leathers that have a really fine grain too? The grain in the real leather bits here looks very rough.
It should work.
What you showed us and said this is leather if you don't take care of it. That was not leather. That was bonded leather and fake. It peels and flakes like that. Leather don't flake like THAT.
SO HELPFUL!
Thanks for the reply :)
Also if you pinch it with your nail the real leather will leave a slight scar , as the vinyl will not scar at all ..

4:02 top grain leather will not crack like that.
It’s genuine leather
Thanks
This test is not good, i have test it on real and fake leader and the same result the spider web thing.
Also try the smell and bend test on the product. I found this method that I posted works for me but it may not be that simple for others.

But how can you tell if your wallet is leather or not? This seems to be only good for furniture.

Spider web finger thing was a great tip.
dude its the same shit the spider web wtff

Naugahyde is better then leather.
