Genuine leather can be a confusing and frustrating term in leather working and leather products. In my leather 101 video i briefly covered the topic but didn't cover it in depth enough so this video is 100% devoted to answering the question, "What is Genuine Leather". I also threw in 5 tips on how to avoid buying bad genuine leather.

You gotta ask if it's 100% leather, not if it's a 100% genuine leather . Fully leather question might receive a weasle answer . Honey can also be blended and still sold say as genuine Manuka honey when the Manuka honey portion is say 20% . Actually there's a honey coincidentally called leatherwood honey which these days is always blended and sold as genuine leatherwood. Very expensive.

@@RoseAnvil I applaud your sentiments about supporting local artisans and makers simply on the basis of honesty and transparency. Big companies with accountants and shareholders to return value for easily cut corners, reducing an item down to a profitable level and not up to a standard. I wear both DMs and Solovairs, as does my wife. DM now being a corporate entity, passed around and sold like a money generating machine, cannot be expected to produce products at the standard they were in the 80s/70s. It just cannot work in their corporate state. Their quality is everything I expected it to be.

Is it better for dead horses to just rot away? No horses are slaughtered just for the purpose of making shell cordovan. It is a byproduct, so that when you have to put a horse down, it's not a total waste. Same thing with eating the horse meat. Every year, horses have to be killed. It's just a fact of life, and it's never going to change. Making cordovan from the horse's shell, and horsehide leather from the rest of the hide, goes a little way towards making the horse's death not be in vain.

im a leather connoisseur and a vegan. the main thing that has the biggest impact on the environment and animals is eating animals daily or at all. i believe that having small but meaningful leather items (shoes, belts, wallets, etc..) isn’t exactly ethical but serves a purpose because of its superior durability and patina over time. Leather is also biodegradable unlike synthetic leather. faux leather is horrible for the environment and in turn, the animals suffer from the pollution. you dont have to be extreme as a vegan, just be ethical and mindful of the amount of animals you kill to sustain yourself.

Generally a high quality leather product will specify what the leather is, be it full grain, top grain, reverse/rough out suede, or split suede. Often they will also specify the type of hide, e.g. cowhide, calf, bullhide, steerhide, horse hide, etc. If the product description doesn't say anything but "leather," that's a bad sign.

*Grabs mic*: Sir, I have several questions:
1: Why was Toaster not in this Vid? Want face no feet!
2: What are things not to ask your local leather person?
3: Can you please do more cat-themed vid? Dunno, make something for Toaster like a DIY vid so others can follow. #CatObessessors
4: Are you aware you obtained another sub, as this subbie initially clicked on a vid of yours, seeing Toaster in a preview play of your vids, then got confused because she was introduced to 2 tomcats; a ginger and a bearded one?
The invisible question: Are you single?

It’s hard starting out in the leather business, with people saying, “well, on Etsy they are selling a leather “x” for this much”, can you compete with that? If you want top/full grain, hand dyed, hand stitched, then no I can’t. I live in Utah, where “value” and cheap prices rule.

That would make the argument that the material biodegrades a 100% for leather like that completely useless... might as well buy 100% hemp shoes... but are they made out of 100% hemp? Nobody knows. Might be plastic made out of hemp parts or sth? Then again, could that be recycled? And even if it was a 100% hemp, where could I bring it to let it degrade? Would they even believe me even if I still had the invoice or would they ask for a certificate? I need answers, damn it

Thanks. Your leather quality lessons gave me a lot more confidence when I went to buy a couch. I could easily tell the quality of the "leather" couches they were selling. Then I found a full grain Italian leather couch that I really liked and felt good about buying it. I looked up the maker (Soft Line) and found that they specialize in Italian leather goods, too. It has a soft, but not quite suede surface, which I'm not sure how they did, but it's clearly quality material.

"Are there products that are stamped with "Genuine" that are high quality"
Bro Horweeen doesn't stamp genuine on there to tell you the grain type. They mean "this is a legitimate Horween leather" Strawman argument. Just say it. All leather products that are stamped "genuine" and have no other indicators as to leather type or grain structure are TRASH.

Take a look at the US regulations on naming requirements. "It is unfair or deceptive to use the unqualified term “leather” or other unqualified terms suggestive of leather to describe industry products unless the industry product so described is composed in all substantial parts of leather". So, no, I don't think it's allowed to stamp that book or that belt as "genuine leather". And, in fact, the book is stamped "genuine bonded leather", which is accurate. So, no, bonded leather can't be called "genuine leather". In fact, the rules specifically call out bonded leather, saying "A material in an industry product that contains ground, pulverized, shredded, reconstituted, or bonded leather and thus is not wholly the hide of an animal should not be represented, directly or by implication, as being leather",.

But the dreamer shoulder bag made with glovetanned leather with leather interior. So I’m not sure. But I recently ordered a full grain leather bag from Portland Leather Goods.

Aussie saddlemaker here, always ask the seller if it is solid leather cut from a hide or side of leather, anything less that yes it is solid 100% leather, steer clear of it. Also, ask the warrantee period, anything less than 12 months preferably two years, steer clear of it. if your leather product is noticably deteriorating within a few months, take it back and ask for your money back.
Best way to be sure, is to go to a craft market and ask the belt maker if they made the belt themselves. Or a saddlemakers shop (not a saddle selling shop, these guys import, they usually do not make). Look for the workshop inside the shop, this will confirm they make their own products. No self respecting saddlemaker will have crap leather or non leather in his or her shop, makes our skin crawl.
One customer brought a narrow black belt to me to check, it was made of cardboard on the inside and vinyl on the outside, lasted a few weeks. The customer liked the buckle, so I make a solid leather strap and added the buckle to it. With all the left behind crap belts, I sometimes think of creating a wall of shame! I am glad this video presenter made this video, there should be more of these types of videos.

Motorcycle pavement racers use kangaroo leather, because it is light and strong. I like using a layer of Fluid Film spray from a Lowes store, then Mothers VLR spray made for car interiors for vinyl, leather and rubber. Mazda mid-level models have a nice fake leather, and the newer ones are heated for the winter. I also sometimes use Hemp hand cream from Walmart for leather- mostly coconut oil, and your skin is a type of leather, still alive. I recommend getting water buffalo leather from India, they are recycling their living tractor and need the cash more than most.

It doesn't look bonded, I took the cut (when it was custom cut at the mall) and I'm using a for diamonds magnifying glass, it seems to have a bit of full grain or top grain.

Thank you. But I have a question that's a lot tougher to answer. I reside in India, where rules are much laxer, and price indicators very unreliable. Could you tell me how, at a shoe store, I could tell the quality of leather I am looking at? Especially if I can't see the cross section that's shown in most explanatory videos on UA-cam.

I live in Poland and Norway. I am looking for a wallet since 2 years now! I tried all over and can't find a decent one. And just don't start me on a belt subject. All are some sort of compressed fibers. I want to spend money for a good product, but I just can't find it anywhere. I will be trying a Samsonite wallet soon, but I am still looking for a belt made of one piece of hard leather.

You are right, but here you are talking about bovine leather, which always has to be split, because it’s very thick. Nobody splits lambskin or sheepskin as they are already thin enough, hence they are automatically full-grain.
