    Really fun to listen to both your perspectives and the joking around with each other.
    Tough call on Rafa or Kyrgios: both of them missed practically a full season, but based on the fact that Rafa says he's ready to compete in matches whereas Nick isn't, means you have to give the edge to Rafa.

    In the Rafa/Nick question I am firmly on Rafa's side. I think he will only come back if he is competitive, so I feel like Rafa will have a few good tournaments this year at the very least. Kyrgios is more of a wildcard. One of the best players on the planet when all stars align... but will they align? I am not so sure.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu 10 місяців тому +1

      I also trust Rafa to stay healthy more than Nick, as weird as it is to say. Nick’s ceiling will always be limited by how he can rarely get past the QFs of a tournament without getting a nagging injury. Nadal may be more likely to have a season-ending injury though

  • @richietaylor9870

    On the Nadal/Kyrgios question, it looks like Nadal will be getting the early start, perhaps a year of two halves? Kyrgios has pulled out of Australia, but will he really be aiming for the clay season? Or will he start his comeback somewhere like Acapulco or Indian Wells? I can see a scenario where he aims to comeback after the French. If Rafa’s ‘24 is anything like his ‘22, he’ll go off the boil after Roland Garros and then Nick will have the second half of the season to chase him down. Could be a fun side attraction, the ‘Will He/Won’t He Catch Rafa?Show.’ Fairy tale ending: Nadal vs Kyrgios in the ATP Finals final! And then of course, they become best mates and decide to play a year together as doubles partners, winning every big doubles title available…

      Can we add Thiem winning another slam to this fairytale ending? Or maybe we can have Nadal vs Kyrgios grand slam final and Thiem wins ATP Finals because he really deserves it after those 2019/2020 performances

    How did I know Gruskin would be a complete Grigor simp? Then again, who isn’t?
    Also around 8:00 y’all said Grigor’s grass results are gone; I don’t really believe that. I thought the match he played against Rune was very high quality at Wimbledon and that was for a spot in the QF. Probably the best match Rune played at the slams, if not all year in general, and Dimitrov hung in there. I see some potential for a good Wimbledon run next year but he has to maintain his seeding so he can get a decent draw.
    Edit: I refreshed my memory and looked back: Dimitrov had a pretty good grass season. Made Queens QF, lost to Alcaraz 4-6 4-6. Definitely no shame in that. And then at Wimbledon I totally forgot he laid a beatdown on Tiafoe 6-2 6-3 6-2 before the Rune match!

    Rafa vs Kyrgios comes down to health. Honestly, even in 2022 Kyrgios didn’t play that much, and that was while taking full care of his body. So now with a full year off, perhaps a bit of a negative mindset from the unfortunate incident in May, maybe didn’t take great care of his body during that time, I’m honestly a bit more confident in Rafa. I also think Rafa’s floor is higher than Nick’s. If Nadal stays healthy and plays a lot, I would be surprised to see him finishing below top 25. Even Federer after his knee injuries reached R16 and QF at RG and Wimbledon. Why can’t Rafa squeeze out some QFs?
    Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I’d lean Rafa. Higher ceiling, higher floor imo.

    I just keep coming back to Kyrgios after the Wimbledon final being asked if now that he's reached the big stage, does it make him want to get there again. He said something like "no, I don't like it" or "It's too much for me." I don't think he was being glib or BS'ing -- it looked like he was being totally honest. I like the guy, and I'd like to see him have a good season. Still, I don't think he'll put a solid tournament run together -- I do expect a great match or two from him along the way.

    FAA reminds me a LOT of Anett Kontveit's 2021. Not only do they have a very similar gamestyle (aggressive but unspectacular baseliners) but they both went on a purple patch that reminded me of Monica Puig's 2016 Olympic run where they just did everything better for about 3 months - esp maintain depth. Felix's shots are too loopy - he doesn't hit his FH or BH with enough variety or flatten it out enough when he needs to end a point. I would be surprised if he ever got to top 10 again. And I'm Canadian

    The Norrie decline has a bit to unpack but the missing piece now is the serve. What he suffered post-IW was largely down to a much more aggressive and physically taxing approach to ball-striking with his FH (it altered the way he played on bad days too, and for the worse, see: Barrère defeat in Miami). It took him up a level when at his best in Jan and led to the improvements on clay during Feb, but the mental wear and tear (had to comeback from behind in a lot of matches) came back to bite at the beginning of the Euro clay swing, and then the physical wear and tear did the same shortly after. He was putting a lot more stress on the left knee in particular to generate the easier, but heavier, FH power he had been, and wasn't able to sustain that without eventually having pain flare up to the point of it limiting that wing. As for post-Wimby, the service toss, which had been a hiccup he hadn't managed to shake off again in Jan, like he had done during Cincy '22 when the lighter balls there also impacted it, was the hurdle he could not overcome. The Gasquet final in Auckland, where he got tight and his serve went again with it, really set the tone for the entire year, and that made him so predictable down the final straight and allowed opps to keep +1s all on his BH. It prevented him from keeping matches ticking to bring his physicality more into play, and also cratered his confidence in attack as he maybe started to feel these 2+ years of tour-level competition creeping up on him in the way of even more fatigue.
    At the start of the year, the focus was all FH, FH, FH. It's levelled off a bit now but to a point where it's prominent enough and should be easy to pick back up on fine-tuning it later on, but that won't happen unless he works on the serve. That is the foundation that he cannot do without. His spot serving into all 4 corners had become really strong by the end of '22, but now it's a far cry from that. If he doesn't rework it (there's plenty of room in his current setup to suggest he should) or get back to hitting those spots as well as he had done, it's hard to see him getting back into the t20 by the end of '24.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu 10 місяців тому +1

      True, but there’s still a lot to plug in the gaps. Being athletic is great, but you need the technique and coordination to stay in rallies too. Having a great serve is good, but you need a reliable +1 or volley option behind it.
      Not saying Shelton doesn’t have/can’t develop those things, just saying it’s totally possible for someone to be hyper athletic and have a great serve but still not win a slam.

      He’s been known to do that to be fair. Nadal prefers the public to have lower expectations, which is why heading into RG every year he says something to lower expectations, whether it be “I’m old now,” or “these conditions suck for me,” “let’s take it one match at a time,” something like that. Stan has some great performances where he turns back the clock, and can still hit the ball with the best of them, but doesn’t have the endurance to win long matches or make deep runs at tournaments. The same will probably be true next year and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t retire within the next 2 years. Hot take: our future goal should be doubles being more popular than singles
    I know seeing the storyline’s of great individual tennis rivals is definitely a unique feature of tennis on an emotional scale, but I believe that tennis has the mo Hot take: our future goal should be doubles being more popular than singles due to the potential with doubles being greater whereas singles feels like it’s exhausted itself with the big 3.
    To the casual person, doubles is far more accessible to play and understand, and in a way indirectly makes them more knowledgeable and appreciate about the difficulty of singles as well.
    I’m looking forward to the next of singles tennis no doubt, but I think but defaulting to singles being more popular, we are limiting its growth for the average human (It also seems like doubles to singles viewership ratio is higher in picketball….)
