The first tennis match I watched was the 2009 Australian Open final between Nadal and Federer. As a 9 year old, I thought this was the coolest thing ever I ever saw and the post match ceremony stayed with me. Over the years, I came to expect them to keep playing at the highest level and for the next 10 years, this was largely the case until they couldn’t anymore. Watching both Federer and Nadal retiring is like saying goodbye to my childhood. I thank them for the memories and to Rafa, all the best with the next chapter of his life.
With regards to Davis Cup, looks like Sinner and Alcaraz will be there to compete and Djokovic said he’ll be there in some capacity too. What a way to send off a true legend.

Rafa is one of a kind.
He’s relentless, he’s resilient, he’s stubborn, he always has fire, but at the same time he’s such a smart player. I don’t know why but I think of the championship point of 2017 US Open- served out wide, approached, volleyed, got it done. A point that summarized his change with Moya after two disappointing years.
We felt that Rafa was not going to play long after 15 and 16, but there we go- he went on and won eight more grand slam titles.
He always gives it all on and off the court. It’s been so well documented. Which makes it exceptionally hard for the fans- there’s really no more for him to play. Like all the great champs retired in the last few years. When they say there’s nothing left, there’s nothing left. Massive respect for Rafa for everything he did.
    Gracias Rafa, happy retirement.

What a loser and asshole you are Nadal. Nishikori has the same injury and is playing. I really don't understand you. I expected you to do much more (you didn't win Miami, Shanghai, Paris, Final Masters, very few big titles on grass and concrete 2 Wimbledon and Australia, 4 US Open and other 1000 series tournaments). When I told you to change these parameters, you didn't want to listen, but you continued to do your own thing and then you pretend to be crazy as if you don't know where the injuries come from and you constantly complain that you would be a goat if there were no injuries. They did not come by themselves or from Mars. Instead of changing something (the style of play on grass and concrete, the schedule of tournaments: we are playing big tournaments and improving volleys and serves) to continue playing like your rival for a long time, you decide to retire. Tony (by choosing a defensive style of play and not an offensive one, not improving and not using more volleys, not improving the serve and therefore not becoming a top serve, wrong way of training) and you (by accepting that style of tennis and way of training even though you saw that it does not suit your body and the wrong schedule of tournaments: playing a lot of small tournaments during the season, smart and careful selection of tournaments, inability, stubbornness to change the style of play and improve the volley and serve or you are stupid) you destroyed your body and injuries occurred. If you had done what I said, you would be the best now

In the midst of all the hardships in Iran, RAFA brought me back to tennis.
This is the impact of this extraordinary athlete.
I started tennis after watching 1971 Wimbledon final between John Newcombe & Stan Smith.
I was put off watching because of some tennis players' jerky theatrics (notably John McEnroe). I would watch here & there but not much.
It was his match in Miami v. Roger in 2004 that got me back to watching tennis & follow intensely.
RAFA is the only player I woke up anytime @ night to watch.
The only player I would watch every single point.
The only player whose win brought me immense joy for days, even months & the pain of his losses stayed with me.
    INCREDIBLE!
TENNIS will not be the same for me again.
I love him with deep respect & appreciation. ❤💛❤ VAMOS!

He had everything Alcaraz has now in terms of talent and weapons: amazing return game, crazy defense, a reliable serve (and super effective in some years); superior volleying, killer forehand, solid backhand, sneaky slice, and extremely high IQ. I don't think any analysis on Nadal will do justice on how lethal and beast mode Rafael Nadal was.
It was also not just about his kinetic ability, but just scarying everyone, even Novak was intimidated by him, the only time you could really win was when he was wounded or came from injury, he was like a world boss, otherwise you may as well duck.
And duck they did. That's why Nadal's top 10 win stats are not super great, like no shit, no player wants to go against Rafa Nadal. Look what he did to players that tried to take him out, Zverev in 2022, or even Thiem, he just collapsed after he tried to dethrone Rafa, probably gave all his energy for a RG.

Federer was the artist, taking the game as we knew it to its elegant conclusion with variety and improvisation; Novak's tennis is recognisable as a perfected, laser accurate, hyper-athletic version of what other players are trying to achieve, but Rafa reinvented tennis for me. Saying goodbye to Rafa's forehand is like saying goodbye to Justine Henin's backhand: you know you won't see one like it ever again. Everyone will remember the power but it is only noteworthy because of how he controlled it, giving high-margin to his shots. The way he neutralised his opponents with the weight and spin of his shot and the way he could pass people on either wing by bending the ball out and in again was a brand new strategy and a physical marvel. It was amazing how it carried over to grass so well and challenged Roger, who was so invincible at the time. Even today, not many players have such a good forehand that they will run around it, leaving their side of the court exposed.
I agree that he was well-rounded elsewhere in his game and arrived on the tour basically fully-formed. Alcaraz is very exciting, fast and strong but I don't think he has the mental fortitude that Nadal had, even as a teenager. Of course Novak can be the GOAT but when Rafa played, it was a different game.

Regarding Goffin winover Zverev. Gill often pointed out that while Zverevs serve is an asset, he is not a spot server. I think Goffin absorbs pace pretty well and is a good enough returner where he can use Zverevs heavy but predictible serve to his advantage. Same with not so precise but heavy groundstrokes

Hey Gill I wanted to ask this for some time and now with this it’s the best occasion. When people talk about Nadal’s game they all mention the incredibly heavy and high RPM lefty forehand, his exceptional ability to cover the court and win points that seemed lost, and his incredible never-give-up mentality. And although these are probably his strongest features, I wanted to ask you give us your opinion of the other aspects of his game. Like, how great was Nadal’s backhand? His serve? Volleys? Dropshot? Slice? Basically could you evaluate all the other parts of the game that don’t get enough recognition from such a great champion? Thank you as always, love your content from Italy!

I remember so well when I first heard a 15 year old was in the draw at Monte Carlo. Tennis at that time had lost a lot of its excitement, the golden era seemed to be gone, yes there was a Fed taking over with sublime tennis way above all his peers but then a teenage Rafa burst onto the scene, in my humble opinion transforming the game,.First came his run on clay, then his repeated beatings of the greatest player the world had seen and finally dethroning him at Wimbledon in possibly the most memorable match ever. He kind of robbed me of twenty years of my life following his ups and downs but always mesmerizing career. He transformed tennis pushing both Fed and Nole to dizzying heights. His intensity his passion his fairness on the court will be sorely missed. He truly is a great, one can only wonder what could have been had he not been injured so often, but that doesn’t really matter he left his mark like dare I say no other.
I wish him all the best
He made so many believe in his credo always push to the end never give up and fight like a lion what ever the odds. Vamos Rafa so many salute you. ❤

Roddick's shoulder ended his career, and Agassi's back was agonising. He was surviving on cortisone injections and couldnt move at all first thing in the morning. Hardly on their terms.
Sampras yes, for sure. Won a Slam. Amazing. And Connors Semi-Final run. Might not have been his last match, but it's the one we all remember as his swansong great performance.

When people make the GOAT argument for Nadal, one of the big factors was his head to head record against Roger and Novak in Grand Slam finals. He really knew how to rise to the occasion. Rafa's wins over Novak at the US Open finals in 2010 and 2013 was some of the best tennis I saw him play; his use of slice to move Novak around the court and change the pace of points was fantastic. He was no one-trick pony, he really worked hard to adjust his game on each surface. His wins over Medvedev in the finals at the US Open and Australian were also amazing hard-court performances. To consider Novak the GOAT I would have liked to have seen him win more on clay against Rafa, especially at the French Open. Novak does have the statistics, longevity and numbers, and he did have some victories on clay against Rafa at Rome and Monte Carlo and such, but in the big moments, when players are at their best, you can make a decent case that Rafa is the GOAT, and I say that as more of a Novak fan.

Novak on the other hand, has a chance to do just that. Being a Nole Super fan, I’m actually ironically hoping he retires next year but as opposed to Rafa, I’m hoping he makes his intentions super clear at the start of the season and thus will be able to enjoy his Farewell tour (enjoying the whole year with potential tributes from every tournament that he participates and being a rockstar wherever he goes). Now that is what I call “leaving on my own terms”. 😎

We've been speculating about what can motivate Djokovic outside the majors now, and here is the answer. He sees his peers all retiring, and he realizes now more than ever that this is his last fling. His times to be out on the court at the top of the game are very few now, so he's got to take advantage of every reasonable opprtunity.

Something about lefties has always irked me a bit, i hardly ever find them aesthetically pleasing to watch (probably because i hated playing them myself or because i could just better identify and put myself in the shoes of right handers). Also, i often had a thing for underdogs, and pretty much from when Rafa entered the public eye, he wasn't what you'd call an underdog anymore. So i often cheered for his opponents, hoping for a competitive game at least - mostly a futile attempt of course. However, i was always impressed by his game, his claycourt dominance, his sportsmanship, and humbleness off the court. Nobody will ever win two-digit claycourt titles at Roland Garros again, that's for sure!

First, Rafa is the greatest sportsperson in the history of modern sports (2nd half of 20th century to the present). The combination of achievement and sportsmanship, as well as humility, grace, and determination, make him, in my mind, the greatest sports-person ever.
Second, your comment about Rafa missing "a lot" (your words) of grand slams is not true and a great over-statement.
You said you do not have the numbers; that is because they do not support your specious claim.
From 2005 to 2019, there were 60 slams, and Rafa played in 54 of them (90%).
    He missed 6: one in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016
    He did miss any in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019
He did miss one in 2020 and then 2 in 2021 as he got to the end, but claiming, as you did, that he missed "a lot" of slams
is not supported by the evidence.
