Omigod, I remember being friends with an ace aro boy and he looked like one of those jock boys you'd see in movies (blonde, blue eyes, tan, muscles to boot) and I was told "he's gonna try to get you in bed and then leave you hanging" and I couldnt stop laughing everytime someone classified him as a play boy based on looks alone because I swear that kid cringed at the idea of dating people. Same, for the longest time I knew there was a difference between sexual and romantic attraction, but I didn't know the definition of sexual attraction, no one had told me, so I thought it was really similar to romantic attraction, and thought I felt sexual attraction, but then I found out the definition, soon as I found out the definition I knew I was ace.
I guess that's why I always felt uncomfortable when someone would ask who my celebrity crush was. I never understood the concept at all.
Today I read some tik tok comments that made me upset. Said that asexuals aren’t oppressed and aren’t a part of the lgbtqiA+ community. Yeah because the possibility of being assaulted because someone believes they can change your mind about sex, being treated like your sexuality is a mental illness, and being excluded out of the LGBT community which is where you’re supposed to feel safe isn’t oppression :). Anyway thanks for this, I needed the validation.

People also out heteromantics and anyone on the Asexual Spectrum. Even if it's demi or grey they're still Asexual. Heterosexual as it is includes sexual attraction and all that. If they're demi they don't have sexual attraction until a strong bond with someone if formed therefore it's not 100% heterosexual and is in fact LGBTQIA+ like the rest of Asexuality. Grey Asexuals are basically the same thing except it's only a little sexual attraction. I don't understand why this is so confusing for some people.

The lgbtq+ community is for sexual and gender minorities, fighting oppression alongside other oppressed groups. Each of these groups experiences oppression in different ways. For example, asexuals have been more dehumanized and ignored than, say, demonized, like gay people.
@@river446 don't forgot the gatekeeping from other LGBTQIA+ people. I think the Asexual Spectrum gets less violence then the others and more verbal oppression but all in all its still oppression (yes I know there's more oppression directed at Asexuals I just see more verbal then anything else)

For me, when I first heard about asexuality, I didn't really go through the questioning phase. I just thought, "Oh yeah, that makes sense, that's me" and that's kind of what it was. I have wondered where exactly I am on the spectrum since, but I'm glad I found out about it before I get to the age of being really pressured to be eager for it.

That's exactly what happened to me! I learned about asexuality in middle school and was like "oh, that's me" and moved on. Same thing when I learned about aromantic in high school :)

@@sloanea.5768 The only reason I can think of it being a sin is the quote from the Bible " go forth and multiply" which most Christians see as their duty. They're doing god's work. So if you're an asexual Christian, then the others may view you as not being able to do your purpose. Anyone else who is also ace would probably be viewed the same too by them. That then might've been demonised to the point where it's viewed as a sin, but I'm not sure on that last part.
For aromantic, it might be because of the expectation to marry in Christianity. To become "one flesh". Anyone who goes against the norm in a very traditional Christian family would probably have a disproving family. Those who don't get into relationships won't be able to carry out their sacred duty to God I guess, so it'd be like denying that.
Again, I'm not a Christian myself, but based around their beliefs this may be a reason.

My mom told me once that people in a healthy relationship have sex once a month or more, and that just made me sick to my stomach. I am definitely not asexual but I hate that even my mother told me that the key to a happy relationship is sex. Asexuals in relationships prove that you can be in a happy healthy relationship and still not have sex. Thank you for this compilation. I am 63 and just discovered the term asexuality and realized that I fit into this category. It was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders knowing my disinterest in sex was not because there is something wrong with me (which I have been thinking for the past 40+ years). It also helps knowing there is a whole asexual community out there (though I didn't know until now we had a flag).

@Emma Todd I am blessed to have the reverse. My parents would also question me wearing jewelry when I don't regularly wear it, especially rings. But my parents actually tend to ask me to leave places by myself more often....but I don't feel too comfortable being alone in crowds unless I absolutely have to. Don't know if it helps. But my parents always gave me the chance to wander around the same shop they were at as they needed to buy something else etc. Perhaps there is an opportunity for something like that? If it's a mall they would allow me to go out and check certain shops while they shop at others albeit me telling them which shop I needed to check out.

Recently went through a breakup that came about due to my partner being a very sexual person and being unable to accept my asexuality.
